Driving innovation in sustainable textile finishing and beyond

Ahead of this year’s ITMA Asia + CITME exhibition in Singapore from October 28-31, industry leading companies Archroma, BW Converting and Monforts will take part in a webtalk with German association VDMA on September 18th.

The three companies will share insights from recent trials conducted at the Monforts Advanced Technology Center in Germany, where a Baldwin TexCoat™ G4 spray unit has been integrated into a Montex stenter to apply Archroma’s latest waterborne chemicals. The collaborative effort aims to maximise resource efficiency and throughput in textile finishing. In addition, the partners will unveil details of a new, cutting-edge line concept set to debut at ITMA Asia in Singapore.

Installed in 2024 at the Monforts Advanced Technology Center in Mönchengladbach, the full-width Baldwin TexCoat G4 unit has enabled extensive real-world testing of advanced finishing formulations. The system’s integration into the Montex stenter has provided a valuable platform for evaluating performance, precision, and sustainability across a wide range of application scenarios.

Installed in 2024 at the Monforts Advanced Technology Center in Mönchengladbach, the full-width Baldwin TexCoat G4 unit has enabled extensive real-world testing of advanced finishing formulations. The system’s integration into the Montex stenter has provided a valuable platform for evaluating performance, precision, and sustainability across a wide range of application scenarios.

“This work now enables us to guide manufacturers through the transition from standard impregnation processes to spray application systems, which have the potential to reduce water and energy consumption as less water is needed to transport the chemicals to the textile surface,” explains Michael Schuhmann, Global Marketing Segment Manager for Technical Textiles at Archroma Textile Effects. “Our latest addition to this range of options is a patent-pending, highly wash durable hydrophilic softener which enhances the longevity of the treated fabrics and will be commercially available soon.”

Commercial success
BW Converting is already seeing commercial success with the Baldwin TexCoat G4 system in the field. In Pakistan, for example, its integration into Montex stenters using Archroma chemistry has proven to be a highly effective line concept for bed sheet production.

“We have helped our customers double their stenter output, while also significantly enhancing the hand feel of the finished fabrics,” says Rick Stanford, Vice President of Business Development for Textiles at BW Converting.

Independent testing by Fashion for Good, a global platform for sustainable textile innovation, compared TexCoat G4 spray application with traditional pad-based finishing, using a Monforts stenter and Archroma formulations. The results confirmed that combining advanced equipment design, process expertise, and tailored chemistry can significantly reduce energy and water consumption while improving capacity utilisation for textile mills.

Monforts has long focused on developing optimised processes paired with energy-efficient machine layouts. Building on the success of their recent collaboration, the three partners are now working on a similar resource-saving concept, combining Monforts’ Thermex continuous dyeing range with the new Baldwin TexChroma spray dyeing system and Archroma dyestuffs.

“We are committed to continuing to work together with a focus on bringing transformative change to the dyeing and finishing space,” says Monforts Technologist Saskia Kuhlen.

Die Herausforderung für die Entwicklungsarbeit bestand darin, dass die temperaturregulierenden Eigenschaften den bei der Denimproduktion üblichen, intensiven Wasch- und Veredelungsprozessen trotzen. Gleichzeitig müssen die Denimstoffe natürlich hinsichtlich Aussehen, Haptik und Haltbarkeit den Anforderungen an hochwertige Jeans entsprechen.

Um diese Anforderungen zu erfüllen, kooperierte Outlast mit dem pakistanischen Unternehmen AGI, einem bekannten Denim-Produzenten. Mit seiner umfassenden Expertise in der Denimherstellung spielte AGI eine entscheidende Rolle, die Outlast® Temperatur Regulierung in Denimprodukte zu integrieren, welche für Marken und Endverbraucher gleichermaßen höchst attraktiv sind.

Besonders überzeugend ist die Langlebigkeit: Das Naturwachs ist direkt in die Faserstruktur integriert. Dadurch bleibt die temperaturregulierende Funktion über die gesamte Lebensdauer des Kleidungsstücks erhalten und wäscht sich nicht aus oder verliert seine Wirkung, so wie es oft bei oberflächlichen Beschichtungen der Fall ist.

+97% Biobased microcapsules
The technology is based on microencapsulation. First the active ingredients are incapsulated. Next, the biobased microcapsules are applied to the textile. The treated textiles touch our skin and the capsules break due to friction between the body and the textile. The content of the biobased capsules is then released and absorbed by the skin, while the volatile components of the active ingredients are simultaneously inhaled.

The microcapsules are readily biodegradable (tested according to the OECD 301B guideline). Possible applications are pillows, bed sheets, bed accessories, sleepwear, ...

Clinical study
33 healthy female and male subjects, aged between 18 and 60 years, with sleep problems, were using a treated pillow cover with R-Vital NTL 10015 Sleep Tight every night for 30 days. Each subject was required to fill out the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and a quality of life (QoL) questionnaire, focused on the sleep quality, quality of life and overall well-being, before and after 30 days of using the respective product. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) is a scientifically validated tool widely used to reliably assess and measure sleep quality.

The data shows that after 30 days of using a pillow case treated with R-Vital NTL 10015, subjects experienced notable improvements in several key areas of sleep and quality of life. The most significant changes were seen in sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep disturbances, reduction of daytime dysfunction and quality of life.

Showcased at Heimtextil 2025 in Frankfurt
Devan’s Sleep Tight technology was prominently featured at Heimtextil in Frankfurt, both by Devan and several of its partners. Notable among them were Crispim Abreu Lda and Lameirinho, two Portuguese companies specializing in bed linen and sleepwear, as well as Naturtex from Hungary, a leading producer of quilts and pillows.

The first productions are already underway, ensuring the technology will be available on the market by the second quarter of 2025. These alliances empower Devan Sleep Tight to deliver unparalleled value to manufacturers, retailers and consumers alike.

A collaboration that unites Monforts’ dyeing and finishing equipment, BW Converting’s Baldwin TexCoat G4™ digital spray technology and Archroma’s chemistries towards sustainable solutions is charting the course for the future of sustainable textile finishing.

Together, the three companies will support dyeing and finishing manufacturers, a critical part of the textile supply chain, in their development projects, boosting the quality and performance of their finished products, while at the same time maximizing the productivity and resource utilization of the finishing application process.  

Kicking off the partnership in the second half of this year, Monforts will install BW Converting’s full-width Baldwin TexCoat digital spray unit on a stenter frame at its Advanced Technology Center (ATC) at its headquarters in Mönchengladbach, Germany.

“Our ATC already houses two full Montex stenter finishing lines engineered to accommodate an extremely diverse range of processes, in addition to a Thermex range for the continuous dyeing of denim and other woven fabrics, a full color kitchen and a number of lab-scale systems for smaller batch trials,” explained Monforts Junior Technologist Saskia Kuhlen. “It enables our customers to test their own textiles and technical fabrics under fully confidential, real production conditions and using the results from these trials we are also able to make recommendations for improving many fabric finishes. The new TexCoat installation will make an important contribution to what we can achieve.”
 
TexCoat G4 revolutionizes the traditional water- and energy-intensive pad-dry-cure finishing process by precisely applying chemistry including softeners, antimicrobials, durable water repellents, flame retardants, resins and most other water-based chemicals across the textile surface only where it is required, on one or both sides of the fabric. The system can therefore reduce water, chemistry and energy consumption by up to 50% compared to traditional pad application processes.

The TexCoat G4 installation brings together the surface functions, fabric transport and thermal processing technology of Monforts stenter frames with Archroma’s specialty chemicals, applied with TexCoat’s contactless precision, to achieve optimum absorption and maximum efficacy, exceeding the performance of traditional pad applications.

Dow has announced the launch of DOWSIL™ IE-9100 Emulsion for durable water repellent (DWR) finishing, the latest addition to the Dow Ecolibrium™ Brand portfolio, as a product for high-performing water repellent fabrics.

The roll out of the evolved VelutineTM Evo technology will start its journey and activation with Infinity, a BembergTM partner and textile manufacturer located in Rovereto, in the Trentino Alto Adige area of Italy. Research and experimentation with new materials and finishings are part of Infinity’s daily work and results are guaranteed through attention to traceability, the use of certifications, and quality control throughout the process. Asahi Kasei is also releasing the LCA study report - Life Cycle Assessment. Forschungsprojekt BioFibreLoop gestartet

Die Deutschen Institute für Textil- und Faserforschung Denkendorf (DITF) koordinieren das Forschungsprojekt, das im Rahmen des Forschungs- und Innovationsprogramms Horizon Europe der Europäischen Union gefördert wird. Ziel von BioFibreLoop ist es, rezyklierbare Outdoor-, und Arbeitskleidung aus erneuerbaren biobasierten Materialien zu entwickeln. Am 26. und 27. Juni 2024 fand in Denkendorf die Auftaktveranstaltung statt.

Bei der Herstellung von Funktionstextilien werden zudem häufig Chemikalien verwendet, die die Umwelt und die Gesundheit belasten und das spätere Recycling erschweren.

Intelligente Innovationen sollen deshalb dafür sorgen, schädliche Chemikalien zu ersetzen, Wasser einzusparen, verstärkt langlebige, recycelbare biobasierte Materialien einzusetzen und so den meist erhebliche CO2-Fußabdruck von textilen Produkten zu reduzieren. Digitalisierte Prozesse sind im Einsatz, um für mehr Effizienz und einen geschlossenen Kreislauf zu sorgen.

Im Projekt BioFibreLoop werden mit Hilfe von Lasertechnologie natürliche Strukturen nachgeahmt, um Kleidungsstücke mit wasser- und ölabweisenden, selbstreinigenden und antibakteriellen Eigenschaften herzustellen. Am Ende der Forschungsarbeit stehen erschwingliche, ressourcen- und umweltfreundliche, aber dennoch leistungsstarke und haltbare Fasern und Textilien aus erneuerbaren Quellen wie Lignin, Zellulose und Polymilchsäure. Alle Prozesse zielen auf eine Kreislaufwirtschaft mit einem umfassenden Recycling und einer nahezu abfallfreien Funktionalisierung nach dem Vorbild der Natur ab. Die Treibhausgasemissionen könnten auf diese Weise bis 2035 um 20 Prozent verringert werden.

Die Technologie für die Funktionalisierung und das Recycling von biobasierten Materialien wird in drei industriellen Demonstrationsprojekten in Österreich, der Tschechischen Republik und Deutschland entwickelt. Am Ende des Projekts steht ein patentiertes zirkuläres, nachhaltiges und zuverlässiges Verfahren für die Herstellung von rezyklierbaren Funktionstextilien.

Das Projekt BioFibreLoop hat eine Laufzeit von 42 Monaten und ein Gesamtbudget von knapp 7 Millionen Euro, 1,5 Millionen gehen an den Koordinator DITF.

Das Konsortium besteht aus 13 Partnern aus neun Ländern, die Kompetenzen und Ressourcen aus Wissenschaft und Industrie mitbringen:

Auf Innovation setzte Tintoria Finissagio 2000 auch bei der Ausrüstung eines neuen Spannrahmens. Hier entschied man sich für die aktuelle Entwicklung des deutschen Maschinenbauers Mahlo GmbH + Co. KG: die Richtautomatik Orthopac RXVMC-20. Das neue Richtkonzept ist speziell für die Verarbeitung von Textilien mit hoher Verzugsdynamik, d.h. Textilien mit stark veränderlichen Verzügen, ausgelegt. Zwei einzeln gesteuerte und angetriebene Richtmodule mit insgesamt drei Bogen- und vier Schrägwalzen sorgen dafür, dass die Korrektur von Bogen- und Schrägverzügen in kleinen Schritten erfolgt. Neu ist auch das Ansteuerungskonzept. Eine Tastkopfgruppe am Einlauf der Richtmaschine erkennt Verzüge, noch bevor sie die Korrekturwalzen erreichen. So werden die Walzen direkt in Position gebracht und die Ware bereits ab dem ersten Zentimeter korrigiert. Eine Tastkopfgruppe am Auslauf erkennt zusätzlich möglichen Restverzug, der den am zweiten Richtmodul korrigiert wird.

“Instead of needing to take the fabric, dip it into a bath to saturate it, squeeze the excess, dry and cure it, you can now precisely add the exact amount of finish you need on the fabric,” explained Rick Stanford, Baldwin's VP Global Business Development of Textiles. “The TexCoat™ G4 system will reduce the amount of pick-up that’s required to carry the chemical onto the fabric. This will also take a lot less energy to dry the fabric, increasing production speeds.”
 
The adoption of the TexCoat™ G4 system signals a new era for the college, allowing students to actively participate in shaping a sustainable future for the textiles industry. PHOBOTEX® NTR-50 LIQ is designed to provide great water repellence on all kinds of fibers while achieving a soft handle and avoiding undesired effects like yellowing and chalk marking. It performs especially well on synthetic fibers and their blends, making it ideal for apparel, outdoor wear and home textiles.

The new DWR is based on 50% renewable carbon content based on ASTM D6866 and is free of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and formaldehyde. It is also crosslinker-free, which makes it more flexible in use. While offering good wash durability on its own, PHOBOTEX® NTR-50 LIQ can be combined with a crosslinker like ARKOPHOB® NTR-40, which has a biocarbon content of 40%, to further boost wash and/or dry-cleaning resistance.

Baldwin Technology Co. will join Elmatex GmbH at Techtexil (April 23-26 in Frankfurt, Germany) to demonstrate its TexCoat™ G4 precision spray finishing system.

With Baldwin’s system, the chemistry is precisely distributed across the textile surface and is applied only where it is required, on one or both sides of the fabric. The non-contact technology eliminates chemistry dilution in wet-on-wet processes, allowing full control of maintaining consistent chemistry coverage rates. Plus, pad bath contamination is eliminated, and changeovers are only required when there is a change of finish chemistry.
 
Furthermore, the system offers automated speed tracking, fabric-width compensation, and real-time monitoring to track system uptime, performance and chemistry usage, as well as active care alerts.
 
In addition, the TexCoat™ G4 system can process a wide range of low-viscosity water-based chemicals, such as durable water repellents, softeners, antimicrobials, flame retardants and more. Baldwin’s technology utilizes the same chemicals used in the traditional pad bath, and no special auxiliaries are required. The recipe is adjusted by increasing the concentration and reducing the pickup by a corresponding amount, so that the same level of solids is applied.
 
Some applications, such as durable water repellents, are only applied on the face of the fabric, instead of the traditional method of saturation through dipping and squeezing. Drier fabric entering the stenter means lower drying temperatures and faster process speeds. Single-side applications also open up the opportunity to process back-coated or laminated fabrics in a single pass of the stenter, instead of two passes.
