TEXAID with its Spanish subsidiary PERCENTIL enable Springfield to put its commitment to sustainability into action through implementing a circularity pilot project with the aim of giving a second life to second-hand garments. As part of the Tendam Group, who operates more than 2000 stores in 79 countries, Springfield partners with the TEXAID group, leading in the industry of collecting, sorting, reselling and recycling used garments, to launch the R[ECO]LLECT initiative.

Take-Back Program R[ECO]LLECT
With "the future is circular" as their call to action, the project is called R[ECO]LLECT and refers directly to the collection of all second-hand garments in good condition, to meet three clear sustainability objectives of Springfield: reduce the pressure on natural resources, reduce CO2 emissions and reduce the amount of textile waste.

R[ECO]LLECT was launched in May 2022 as a pilot project in 16 Springfield stores in Spain across different cities and provinces.

TEXAID’s Spanish subsidiary PERCENTIL is a strategic partner of Springfield in this step towards sustainability. The motto of PERCENTIL is that "there is nothing more sustainable than what you already have in your closet", and it is an intermediary between people who want to get rid of clothes and those who are looking to buy almost new clothes from brands recognized for their design and quality, but at a much lower price. In this way, textile overproduction is reduced, and the environmental impact is reduced. In addition, PERCENTIL receives the clothes, sorts them and takes care of giving them a second life.

Based on the good business development in all four Business Units as well as the mostly successful passing on of increased costs for raw materials, energy and transport to customers, the Board of Management of SGL Carbon SE expects to exceed the given guidance for the fiscal year 2022. Accordingly, SGL Carbon SE is increasing its sales and earnings guidance for fiscal year 2022.

The Company expects to exceed the upper end of the stated range of its Group EBITDApre (earnings before interest, taxes and depreciation adjusted by non-recurring items and one-time effects) guidance for the fiscal year 2022 of EUR 110 - 130 million and is raising its EBITDApre guidance for 2022 to EUR 130 - 150 million. Correspondingly, EBITpre1 (earnings before interest and tax adjusted by non-recurring items and one-time effects) is now forecasted to be between EUR 70 - 90 million (previously: EUR 50 - 70 million). The sales guidance is also raised to around EUR 1.1 billion for the current fiscal year, originally expected to be at the level of the previous year (EUR 1,007.0 million).

In line with the development of earnings, the forecast for return on capital employed (ROCE) of originally 5% - 7% is raised to 7% - 9%. The expectations for free cash flow remain unaffected by the forecast increase. Free cash flow is still expected to be significantly lower in 2022 than in the previous year (previous year: EUR 111.5 million).

The new forecast for fiscal 2022 has been drawn up on the basis of the prevailing market environment and assumes no deterioration in conditions, in particular due to the war in Ukraine and its consequences for the global economy. In particular, it is assumed that sufficient electricity and gas will be available and production lines will remain in operation. The communicated medium-term targets up to 2025 remain unaffected by the forecast adjustment.

SGL Carbon will publish its 2022 half-year figures as planned on August 4, 2022.

Standards Australia released on May 23 a new national standard that builds on the test methods and criteria of the INDA/EDANA Flushability Guidance Document, Fourth Edition (GD4). It also includes a new user-friendly labeling approach to indicate what products can be flushed down the toilet.

INDA and EDANA issued a copyright license for the testing method under a collaborative agreement with Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA). Australia and New Zealand manufacturers will now follow the same rigorous seven-test process established by INDA and EDANA, with minor modifications, to determine which wipes can be safely flushed in Australia and New Zealand.  

WSAA worked with Standards Australia – the country’s leading independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit standards organization – to develop the new standard in response to increasing blockages experienced by water utilities and customers across Australia.

The standard specifies test methods and criteria for determining if products are suitable for disposal by flushing them down a toilet and also provides guidance on labeling and marking of these products. Toilet paper, liquids and soluble products are excluded.

Zhoukou Xuwang Co., Ltd. has successfully started up two new ANDRITZ neXline spunlace lines at its facilities based in Henan province, China. Combining equipment from the aXcess and eXcelle ranges, both lines are dedicated to the production of spunlace fabrics of 30 to 120 gsm made out of viscose and polyester fibers. The ANDRITZ design will allow Zhoukou Xuwang to serve the premium product market, especially for premium hygiene and technical wipes, in China.

The ANDRITZ scope of supply for the two lines included:

• aXcess opening and blending systems
• high-performance eXcelle card and crosslapper
• robust aXcess CA25 carding machine
• efficient Jetlace Avantage hydroentanglement unit

This configuration will enable Zhoukou Xuwang to manufacture high-quality products while reducing raw materials consumption. These goals are further enabled by the installation of an ANDRITZ Asselin-Thibeau crosslapper PRO35-140, generating a uniform profile over the entire web width.

In spite of the difficult circumstances and supply chain disruptions related to the Covid crisis, both spunlace lines were installed smoothly and on time. They quickly went into commercial production, with a line speed of up to 100 m/min and high-performance MD/CD ratio.

111 companies from nine different countries took part in the 4th edition of one of the leading trade fairs in Turkey for occupational safety and health, TOS+H EXPO, from May 14-17, in Istanbul. Due to the ever-increasing importance of personal protection, occupational safety and a healthy workplace, TOS+H EXPO came just in time. Exhibitors were able to target a Turkish audience with the latest trends and products in industrial safety, health promotion at work and occupational safety management. The Occupational Health and Safety Symposium, which was organised by the Istanbul Chamber of Industry (ICI) was also very well attended on all four days. Current occupational safety and health issues were addressed and provided important impulses for establishing a prevention culture in companies in Turkey and its neighboring countries. A total of 4.309 visitors from 58 countries attended the 4th TOS+H EXPO.

TOS+H Expo 2022 and the Occupational Health and Safety Symposium organized by the Istanbul Chamber of Industry were officially opened on May 14, 2022 by Ms. Petra Cullman, Executive Director Messe Düsseldorf and Sadık Ayhan SARUHAN, ICI Vice President. The new partnership with the Chamber of Industry will ensure the quality of the event and also strengthen the leading position of TOS+H Expo in Turkey.

“The Occupational Health and Safety Symposium, which we organized simultaneously with the 4th TOS+H Expo - Turkish Occupational Safety + Health Exhibition, was concluded with the presentations of 84 speakers in 22 sessions. Our symposium included highly interesting presentations on the environment, sustainability and labor law and was met with great interest by all parties and especially by representatives from all industrial sectors which deal with the topic of occupational safety and health at work. • Exceptionally high order backlog and sustained strong demand
• Supply chain bottlenecks, COVID lockdown in China and significant cost increases
• Takeover of winding machine business leads to additional costs
• Sales and earnings adversely impacted in first half-year
• Considerably improved market position

Despite an exceptionally high order backlog and sustained strong demand, Rieter’s business situation in the first half of 2022 is characterized by the well-known supply chain bottlenecks, the repercussions of the COVID lockdown in China and the significant increases in material and transportation costs.

Further costs are added in connection with the takeover of the automatic winding business as of April 1, 2022.

These factors are adversely impacting both sales and earnings.

Rieter expects significantly higher sales in the first half of 2022 compared to the prior-year period (first half of 2021: CHF 400.5 million). Rieter anticipates a loss at the EBIT and net result level in the first half of 2022 (first half of 2021: EBIT CHF 9.0 million, net result: CHF 5.3 million).
The company is working intensively on the implementation of measures to minimize the impact of the supply chain bottlenecks, the COVID lockdown in China and the cost increases. The implemented price increases have a delayed effect, particularly in the machinery business. The integration of the automatic winding business is proceeding according to plan.

As soon as the situation in the sourcing markets has normalized, Rieter expects to benefit from the exceptionally high order backlog and the considerably improved market position as a result of the takeover of the automatic winding business as well as Accotex and Temco.
Rieter will provide a detailed report on the business results of the first half of 2022 in July 2022.

Der Bundesverband Medizintechnologie (BVMed) spricht sich in seiner Stellungnahme zum Vorschlag der EU-Kommission einer Lieferkettensorgfaltspflichten-Richtlinie „Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive“ (CSDDD) für einen Abgleich mit dem bereits bestehenden nationalen Gesetz und für eine Begrenzung der Regelungen auf die direkten Zulieferer aus.

„Wir begrüßen eine Stärkung von Menschenrechten weltweit. Der EU-Kommissionsvorschlag ist jedoch aus Sicht des BVMed in seiner momentanen Fassung unzureichend, um rechtssichere und praktikable Regeln für Unternehmen zu schaffen. Es besteht vielmehr die Gefahr, dass der Entwurf die Unternehmen der Branche, die sich im Moment ohnehin schon mit angespannten Lieferketten konfrontiert sehen, überfordern und in der Umsetzung überlasten könnte“, kommentiert BVMed-Geschäftsführer und Vorstandsmitglied Dr. Marc-Pierre Möll.

Deutschland habe mit dem Lieferkettensorgfaltspflichten-Gesetz (LkSG) bereits eine umfassende nationale gesetzliche Regelung über die unternehmerischen Sorgfaltspflichten zur Vermeidung von Menschenrechtsverletzungen in der Lieferkette geschaffen. „Viele Medizintechnik-Unternehmen in Deutschland und andere wirtschaftliche Akteure im Gesundheitswesen wie beispielsweise die Krankenhäuser bereiten sich intensiv auf die Umsetzung des LkSG vor. Eine Abänderung des LkSG als Folge einer stark abweichenden EU-Richtlinie würde erheblichen Mehraufwand und Kosten für die betroffenen Unternehmen in Deutschland bedeuten“, so BVMed-Nachhaltigkeitsexpertin Clara Allonge.

Der BVMed spricht sich daher für eine mit dem deutschen Lieferkettengesetz kompatible und praxistaugliche europäische Regelung aus. Dies sei im aktuellen Vorschlag der EU-Kommission durch die deutliche Erweiterung des Anwendungsbereiches, beispielswiese durch die Einbeziehung von negativen Umweltfolgen, sowie die Einführung einer zivilrechtlichen Haftung nicht gegeben. „Als Lösung könnte hier eine Begrenzung auf die direkten Zulieferer greifen“, heißt es in der BVMed-Stellungnahme.

Der BVMed konzentriert sich in seiner Stellungnahme zum CSDDD auf vier Punkte:

1. Als Anforderungen an eine praxistaugliche Lieferkettenregulierung müsse der Anwendungsbereich eindeutig auf die direkten Zulieferer begrenzt werden. Während Unternehmen in direkten Geschäftsbeziehungen in der Lage sind, Sorgfaltspflichten effektiv zu adressieren und Verantwortung zu übernehmen, so ist dies in der weiteren und immer komplexer werdenden Lieferkette nicht der Fall.
    
2. Es sei nicht sinnvoll, grundlegende Bewertungen über die menschenrechtliche Situation in die Hände einzelner Unternehmen zu legen, während sich der Staat an dieser Stelle aus der Verantwortung zieht. Daher sollten die Mitgliedsstaaten der EU eine Liste von Ländern erstellen, bei denen Unternehmen annehmen können, dass die Zulieferer aus diesen Ländern alle Kriterien erfüllen. Eine solche Safe Harbour-Regelung würde einen klaren und erfüllbaren Rahmen bieten in dem die Unternehmen unter stabilen Bedingungen operieren können. Dies verringerte den Verwaltungsaufwand und die Rechtsrisiken für die Unternehmen erheblich.
    
3. Es ergeben sich bei den Umweltfolgen erhebliche Unklarheiten, was die konkrete Auslegung angehe. Einerseits wäre es wünschenswert, wenn die jeweiligen Rechtsnormen des Heimatlandes des Zulieferers für die Bewertung herangezogen würden, andererseits bringe die Bewertung einer Vielzahl von lokalen Umweltgesetzen viele Unternehmen an den Rand der Leistbarkeit. Der Anwendungsbereich des Gesetzes sollte sich auf die Achtung der Menschenrechte konzentrieren. Eine Erweiterung um den Bereich „Umwelt“ würde aufgrund uneinheitlicher Standards zusätzliche Rechtsunsicherheit schaffen. Das gelte auch für das Vorhaben, in dieser Richtlinie Klimaschutzziele festzuschreiben.
    
4. Nach Einschätzung des BVMed umfasst der Begriff der „Wertschöpfungskette“, wie im Richtlinienvorschlag angeführt, auch die Kund:innen der Branche (beispielsweise Krankenhäuser). Wenn dem so sei, könnte der Fall eintreten, dass Medizintechnik-Unternehmen einzelne Kunden, falls diese gegen die Kriterien der Richtlinie verstoßen, nicht mehr beliefern dürften und die Versorgung von Patientinnen und Patienten eventuell nicht sichergestellt werden könne. Dies wäre aus humanitären Gesichtspunkten eine nicht akzeptable Einschränkung der Versorgung und träfe insbesondere Patientinnen und Patienten in Drittländern und Ländern mit bereits heute eingeschränkter Gesundheitsversorgung. Der Verband schlägt daher vor, dass für den sogenannten Downstream-Teil der Wertschöpfungskette eine humanitäre Ausnahme etabliert wird. Dies könne analog zur Regelung bei Sanktionen (beispielweise bei den Russland-Sanktionen) vollzogen werden.

Report Offers INDA Members Key Metrics to Assist in Strategic Planning and Investments

INDA, the Association of the Nonwovens Fabrics Industry, announces publication of the ninth edition of the annual North American Nonwovens Supply Report for its members.

Based on extensive research, producer surveys and interviews with industry leaders, the report provides an overall view of North American supply, including the key metrics of capacity, production and operating rates, in addition to regional trade, through the year 2021. The 75-page report contains 36 figures and 11 tables.

Findings from this year’s Supply Report include:

• North American capacity continues to increase with investments being made across all the processes and for a variety of end-uses. Production output exceeded that of new capacity, resulting in the industry’s nameplate capacity utilization increasing year-over-year, for the fourth consecutive year.
   
• In 2021, capacity of nonwovens in North America reached 5.540 million tonnes, an increase from the previous year of 1.8% (net growth of 98,300 tonnes) and an improvement over the previous year’s pandemic-impacted growth rate of 0.5%.
   
• The industry was able to quickly react to the demand for electrostatically charged fine-fiber meltblown used in the manufacture of respirators and pleated face masks. Twenty-two meltblown lines were added in 2020, resulting in 7.2% year-over-year growth rate for meltblown. In 2021, another 12 lines were added, resulting in 8.5% annual growth over 2020.
   
• North American imports, in tonnage, increased 1.6% in 2021 as exports decreased 6.0%. Imports were led by China accounting for 39% of the imports into North America followed by India (14%) and Germany (9%). Even with the significant shifts in North American trade dynamics, nonwovens tend to stay where they are produced, with the net trade balance (imports less exports, 422,100 tonnes) accounting for less than ten percent of the region’s capacity

The report—and the quarterly INDA Market Pulse and monthly Price Trends Summary—are provided to the nearly 400 INDA member companies and associates as part of their membership. The data gathered for this annual report serves as the foundation for the both the biannual Global Nonwoven Market Report published in September of 2021 and the biannual North American Nonwovens Industry Outlook, which will be updated and published this fall.

Three main research areas - innovative fibers and yarns, sustainable dyes and green chemistry - united by the task of transferring cutting-edge technologies through open innovation. Among the new projects presented is "Off the Grain," born from the collaboration with Riso Gallo, a leading rice producer in Italy. It is a new type of dye derived from the processing of a particular variety of black rice: the boiling water of the rice, which can no longer be used for the food industry, is transformed into a natural dye, resulting in significant water savings during the dyeing process.

"Grounded Indigo" is a natural textile dyestuff, born from the search for dyeing practices that are more responsible to people and the environment. For this project, ALBINI_next chose to collaborate with Stony Creek Colors, an American producer of the world's only 100% plant-based indigo that is USDA BioPreferred certified.

The third project, called "HempFeel," is an innovative hemp oil-based finishing, tipically used for cosmetic products. ALBINI_next was the first company to apply it to fabrics of different weights, compositions and structures. HempFeel replaces silicones usually used in finishing, thus reducing the release of microplastics and giving fabrics a soft and durable hand.

• Svegea, a member of TMAS, the Swedish textile machine association, is marking a company milestone this year at Texprocess in Frankfurt from June 21-24  – the 70th anniversary of its automatic collarette cutter.

 On its introduction back in 1952, this machine – used by garment manufacturers around the world for the production of tubular apparel components such as cuff and neck tapes and other seam reinforcements – caused a sensation with its then-unprecedented output of 300 metres per hour.

Time doesn’t stand still, however, and the latest EC 300 machine Svegea will demonstrate at Texprocess 2022 has a slightly improved output – of around 20,000 metres per hour.

“Advances in automation are only making the specialised, bespoke machines we engineer even more efficient and we are expecting a very busy show in Frankfurt and a busy year,” says Svegea Managing Director Håkan Steene. “The garment components our collarette cutters produce make it logical for them to be integrated into the operations of making-up operations wherever they are, and at the moment we’re seeing a lot of interest in the reshoring of operations by our customers, to bring final-stage manufacturing closer to the key European and US markets.”

E-Drive 2
The EC 300 collarette cutter on show in Frankfurt is equipped with the latest E-Drive 2 system providing the operator with a very user-friendly touchscreen, providing full control of the cutting process.

The integrated, fully automatic FA500 roll slitter accommodates diameters up to 400mm and is equipped with three separately adjustable settings enabling three different band widths to be cut within the same cutting cycle. Automatic tube sewing units are provided for sewn tubes in optional rolled or flat folded forms, depending on customer preference.

Niche applications
Svegea supplies many other bespoke machines for applications in the production of both garment components and technical textiles, including rewinding, measuring, inspection and band knife machines.

The ability to produce tubular fabric which is cut on the bias allows customers to provide textiles which not only have improved drape and elasticity properties for complex and intricate shapes, but also offer ways to reduce production costs by eliminating unnecessary wastage from the manufacturing process. Pre-cutting the fabric to a specific bias reduces extra handling of the fabric in further processes, saving customers both valuable production time and costs.
