Todd Zimmerman Joins EFI as VP and GM for Display Graphics

Todd Zimmerman, a long-time graphic arts executive with a strong track record of growing advanced technology initiatives in print, has joined Electronics For Imaging, Inc. as its new vice president and general manager, Display Graphics.

He comes to EFI™ from Fujifilm® USA, where he spent a decade and a half in a variety of executive roles, most recently as division president and corporate VP of Fujifilm Global Graphic Systems. Prior to joining Fujifilm, Zimmerman worked in sales with Kodak Polychrome Graphics.

Zimmerman assumes his new role at a time when many EFI customers are growing their businesses to meet recovery-fuelled, post-pandemic business needs, especially in key application areas, such as point-of-purchase graphics, tradeshow and event signage, and environmental graphics and décor. As print businesses regain their momentum, Zimmerman will lead EFI’s largest inkjet business segment, a Display Graphics business that is among the world’s largest developers of superwide-format UV LED and dye-sublimation inkjet printers and inks.

ISKO donates denim fabrics to Savannah College of Art and Design

As part of ISKO’s Responsible Innovation™ strategy, the company has a commitment to supporting the next generation of design students and up-and-coming designers and brands. This commitment was shown most recently when the leading denim innovator donated a selection of its denim fabrics to three students at the Savannah College of Art and Design, to support the design and development of their final year collections and help them shape their creative vision.

On 7 May, the students’ collections were presented to a panel of fashion industry experts, including ISKO’s Marketing and Business Development Manager, Sonny Puryear, who offered invaluable feedback and support for their future endeavours.

The university has taken part in several past editions of ISKO’s I-SKOOL™ denim design contest, so it was logical that three of this year’s graduates, Ifeade Adedokun, E'Naiyah Frazier, and Maryam Muhammad would turn to ISKO in light of its longstanding knowledge and expertise when it comes to denim. The company was proud to provide them with ISKO fabrics, developed according to advanced and responsible processes and in compliance with strict international standards.

NCTO: Industry and Union Coalition releases Statement about PPE

A broad coalition of industry organizations and labor unions, representing a broad spectrum of manufacturers and workers who stepped up to make essential personal protective equipment (PPE) throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) expressing strong support for the inclusion of robust domestic procurement policies for PPE in the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act (USICA) currently being considered by the Senate.

Alchemie Technology and HeiQ create sustainable textile finishing partnership

Alchemie Technology, a leader in waterless, digital on-demand, smart dyeing technology, has today announced its partnership with HeiQ, a leader in textile innovation, as it prepares the production rollout of its NOVARATM digital multifunction finishing solution to the global textile market in Q3 this year.

NOVARA can apply single-sided, or simultaneous two-sided, coating of multiple finishes to specific areas of textile. For example, combining anti-odour and water repellence in one material.

The management of vombaur was restructured as of 1 May 2021: Dipl.-Ing. Dirk Wachsmuth will be responsible for sales, marketing and development as the new Managing Director. The previous Managing Director Peter vom Baur will retain responsibility for vombaur after almost 30 years as a shareholder of the parent company Textation Group.

After studying machinery construction, Dirk Wachsmuth worked for many years first for a filter manufacturer, then in the plastics industry. Together with Andreas Kielholz and Christoph Schliefer, he will be heading vombaur GmbH & Co. KG from now on.

The company has come through the crisis year 2020 on a solid footing and is positioned for the future. vombaur is currently investing an amount in the double-digit millions in a state-of-the-art headquarters that will be inaugurated in 2023.

Archroma announces a successful first year on the U.S. home care market with its whiteness solutions for laundry and detergents.

Archroma acquired in December 2019 the BASF's stilbene-based optical brightening agents (OBA) business for liquid and powder laundry detergent applications. The acquisition included the OBA technology, portfolio and manufacturing unit at Ankleshwar, India.

Since then, Archroma has mobilized its global experts, technologies and know-how, to design a holistic solutions portfolio for household, industrial & institutional cleaning (HI&I) aimed to support detergent manufacturers.

The portfolio now includes solutions for whiteness, coloration, stain removal, fabric softening, as well as sequestering agents and surfactants, which can be used in applications such as multipurpose cleaning powders, detergent powders, dish wash tablets and liquids, laundry liquids and fabric softeners, and hard surface cleaners.

The product is also highly soluble in water and stable in oxidative environment.

Bereits seit über 15 Jahren legen Firmengründer und -inhaber Martin und Robert Klüsener und ihr Team größten Wert auf die Wiederverwendung gebrauchter Rohmaterialien. So ist die Basis eines jeden Feuerwear-Produktes – ob Hip Bag, Portemonnaie, Rucksack oder Tasche – seit jeher gebrauchter Feuerwehrschlauch. Doch auch bei den Fertigungsprozessen und den weiteren eingesetzten Materialien stehen Nachhaltigkeit und das Upcycling an erster Stelle. So wird seit 2021 neben gebrauchtem Feuerwehrschlauch auch Gewebe aus gebrauchten PET-Flaschen für die Feuerwear-Unikate eingesetzt.

„Unser Ziel ist es, möglichst viele Bestandteile unserer Produkte aus nachhaltig gefertigten – im Bestfall recycelten – Rohmaterialien herzustellen“, berichtet Robert Klüsener, Martins Bruder und ebenfalls Geschäftsführer bei Feuerwear.
Um auch die Transportwege klein zu halten, legt Feuerwear wert auf möglichst regionale, bzw. nationale Partner und Lieferanten. „Unsere Schläuche stammen beispielsweise alle aus deutschen Feuerwehrwachen “, informiert Robert Klüsener. The textile industry is constantly searching for new, sustainable, and circular materials. Following thorough research and testing, Spinnova and KT Trading have developed a natural leather fabric made from leather waste without harmful chemicals.

"Leather is an amazing high-quality material with unique properties. With this new textile, we have taken yet another step towards completing the circular economy for leather," says Kristian Geert Jensen, CEO of KT Trading, who now has a joint venture with Spinnova.

Spinnova CEO: Sustainable innovation
Together with KT Trading, ECCO’s key leather provider, Spinnova has established the Respin company - a new joint venture. The partners are already constructing a leather fibre production pilot plant in Finland.

ECCO’s Applied Research division and Spinnova have been in a R&D collaboration since 2018 and have made successful trials with spinning the protein biomass into fibre. Processing leather raw material does not require further technology development from Spinnova. The company already has proof of concept from using the method on wood-based raw material.

Trotzdem zögern viele Einzelhändler bei der Umstellung auf diese Technologie. „Das liegt daran, dass bis vor einigen Jahren die Einführung von RFID-Technologie noch mit einem mehrjährigen Projekt und entsprechend langer Pilotphase verbunden war. Außerdem konnten Einzelhändler den Gewinn daraus schwer abschätzen“, erklärt Miguel Garcia Manso, Business Unit Director Deutschland von Checkpoint Systems, einem weltweit führenden Anbieter von RF- und RFID-Technologie für den Einzelhandel. „Heute aber kann im Rahmen eines effizient umgesetzten Pilotprojekts für jeden Einzelhändler schnell berechnet werden, wie hoch seine Investitionsrendite ist und wie viel rentabler er durch die Einführung von RFID arbeiten kann.“

Im Rahmen eines kostenlosen Store Scans wird ermittelt, welche Artikel in der Filiale bereits gekennzeichnet sind. Im Durchschnitt sind rund 40 Prozent der Artikel bei Mode- und Schuheinzelhändlern mit großen Marken im Sortiment bereits mit RFID-Etiketten versehen. Alternativ kennzeichnen die Fachleute einen Teil der Eigenmarke des Einzelhändlers. Es folgen ein Pilotversuch sowie Schulungen und Vor-Ort-Support. Die gestaffelte Vorgehensweise ermöglicht es Einzelhändlern, mit einem begrenzten Einsatz von Ressourcen und ohne Risiko die Möglichkeiten von RFID für den eigenen Store kennenzulernen, im realen Einsatz zu testen und nach erfolgreichem Test schnell einzuführen.

NCTO testifies on the Medical Supply Chain and Pandemic Response Gaps

  • Continue to deploy the Defense Production Act to shore up the textile industrial base from raw materials to end products for all essential products

Teijin Carbon produces new thermoplastic PPS-Tape

Teijin Carbon Europe introduces a new thermoplastic carbon fiber tape (TPUD) based on PPS. The new Tenax™ TPUD with PPS matrix allows entry in new cost-sensitive markets while offering the typical TPUD advantages like high resistance to chemicals and solvents, low flammability, storage or shipping at room temperature and recyclability.  

Due to its flame retardant properties and low smoke emission, it can be used in interior applications of aircraft or rail vehicles, among others. The maximum continuous operating temperature is up to 220 °C. Very low water absorption, excellent creep resistance even at elevated temperatures and high dimensional stability round off the property portfolio of this new TPUD. It is therefore also suitable for demanding applications in the aerospace, oil & gas, sporting goods or industrial sectors, while remaining cost-effective. These properties make the product perfect for highly automated processing routes such as ATL or AFP in combination with overmolding for complex geometries. Production start for the Tenax™ TPUD with PPS matrix is the first quarter in 2021.

For almost 10 years, unidirectional tapes (TPUD) have been manufactured from carbon fibers and thermoplastics in Heinsberg, Germany. The semi-finished products have so far been offered with PEEK or PAEK – and PPS is now added to the list of available matrixes. PPS allows a lower process temperature compared to PEEK or PAEK. For the industrial market in particular, increasing the production rate to make processes more cost-efficient is an opportunity.
