The executive decision to leave ETAD and join TEGEWA was made after careful considerations on current global business needs, market demands and customers’ requirements. In conclusion, DyStar decided to work with an organization that can better represent and effectively support the Chemical Industry in a fast and challenging environment, and at the same time, provide essential support to the Textile Chemical Producers, the Brands and Retailers, among other stakeholders in the worldwide supply chain.

SGi 128 Gelcoat is produced with 38% of its carbon content derived from non-oil sources and is a halogen free gelcoat that provides outstanding fire protection for epoxy laminates and extremely low smoke toxicity. Available with both fast and slow hardeners, this easy to apply epoxy system forms a much tougher and waterproof part surface than traditional intumescent coatings. Emsdetten - Der German Design Award ging in diesem Jahr im Doppelpack an swela, eine Marke der Schmitz Textiles. Die Emsdettener nahmen den begehrten Preis am vergangenen Freitag (7. Februar 2020) für den swela Outdoor-Vorhang Botanic und für den Outdoor-Bezugsstoff GRID entgegen.

„Wir sind absolut happy“, sagte swela-Vertriebsleiter Wouter Hof bei der Übergabe der Auszeichnungen in Frankfurt am Main. „Diese beiden Auszeichnungen sind das Ergebnis einer tollen Teamleistung: Design Studio, technische Entwicklung und Produktion – da hat offensichtlich alles gestimmt.“ Am selben Abend wurden auch die Ausstellungen Excellent Communication Design und Excellent Architecture im Museum Angewandte Kunst eröffnet. Bis zum 23. Februar werden dort alle Gewinner des German Design Awards gezeigt.

Sichtschutz nach innen bei nahezu ungehinderter Sicht nach draußen – das bietet der swela Outdoor-Vorhang Botanic. Verbunden mit einer schmutzabweisenden Ausrüstung und hoher Lichtechtheit ist der Artikel für den Einsatz in Wintergärten sowie auf Balkonen und Terrassen geeignet. Neben der Funktion überzeugt auch das Design: Fotorealistische florale Elemente werden mit geometrischen Kachelmustern kombiniert. Abgerundet durch den soften textilen Touch entsteht so ein einzigartiges Produkt für die Außendekoration. Genau das ist auch der Grund, warum die Jury den Artikel zum „Winner“ erklärt hatte: „Dieser Vorhang ist Teil des Trends hin zur Verwendung von Inneneinrichtung im Außenbereich. Er ist energisch, praktisch und modern, mit einem auffälligen Wechselspiel zwischen symmetrischen Formen und botanischen Elementen.“

Der Outdoor-Bezugsstoff GRID besticht durch seine Vielfarbigkeit. Die stilsichere Kombination der farbigen Garne in Kette und Schuss ergibt ein einzigartiges Minikaromuster. Dies sei „ein optisches Highlight in einem Stoff, der sich durch Robustheit und Zweckmäßigkeit auszeichnet“, resümiert die Jury. Gewebt wird der Artikel aus hochwertig verzwirnten Garnen, die speziell für den Outdoor-Bereich entwickelt wurden. Durch sie ist der Stoff widerstandsfähig, licht-, wetter- und farbbeständig, zudem besonders reiß- und reibfest, formstabil und elastisch. But before subject-specific questions are discussed in depth in the individual sessions, the concise and inspiring keynotes by leading business experts from science and industry will draw attention to the current trends and challenges in the industry at the start of the conference. A large part of the presentations is shaped by the current discussion on environmental and sustainability issues and the resulting consequences for the global economy.

The aim of his presentation is to work out the challenges of climate change especially for agriculture and cotton production. With his lecture “The HUGO BOSS sustainability programme ... and what our customer has to do with it” Andreas Streubig, Director of Global Sustainability at Hugo Boss AG, Metzingen, Germany, rolls up the textile value chain from a different angle, starting at the consumer level. As a representative of a premium brand for women's and men's clothing, Streubig discusses sustainability as a strategic element of the corporate strategy and provides information on how elements of the strategy are being implemented at Hugo Boss.

Rüdiger Senft, Head of Sustainability at Commerzbank, Frankfurt am Main, Germany, looks at the changing role of banks in financing the cotton market. In addition to a general introduction to the topic of sustainability and banking regulation, Senft's presentation deals with the financing of the cotton trade from a social and ecological point of view.
The opening session on 25 March is hosted by Bill Ballenden, founder and owner of Dragontree, Swindon, UK, an online auction platform for the cotton trade. As a former cotton manager for Louis Dreyfus in Europe and Asia, Bill Ballenden has many years of experience in the industry.

Cross-Cutting Issues: Digitalisation, Gender, Value Chains

The subsequent session in the conference programme with the headline “A Wider View” is devoted to currently defining trends and important cross-cutting issues in the industry. This goes far beyond classic cotton themes.

A lecture by Mark Messura, Senior Vice President, Global Supply Chain Marketing for Cotton Incorporated, Cary, North Carolina, deals with the role of cotton in an increasingly digitally controlled supply chain. Significant keywords here are faster delivery times, vertical integration, transparency and traceability.

The presentation by Roger Gilmartin, Managing Director of Tri-Blend Consulting, Charlotte, USA, entitled “The secret recipe for timely, cost-optimised and high-quality cotton clothing” promises exciting and enlightening insights. Tri-Blend Consulting conducts studies on the performance of different cotton varieties during the entire consumption process to the finished yarn and evaluates them from an economic point of view.

Amy Jackson, from the Better Cotton Initiative, London, UK, presents ICA Liverpool's “Women in Cotton” initiative. With this commitment, the initiative aims to increase the influence of women in the cotton industry and give them a stronger voice, for example by building networks in cooperation.

Navdeep Singh Sodhi, International Strategic Management Consultant at the Gherzi Textile Organisation, Switzerland, gives an insight into the current development of the value chain for cotton, textiles and clothing in Africa. Looking ahead to the coming decades, also in view of population growth, Africa is seen as having a high potential for building economic structures to improve income and prosperity.

Thomas Schneider, Professor at the University of Applied Sciences in Berlin and active in the field of production planning and control, textile materials and materials testing will host the session. A leading light in his field, Thomas Schneider has more than 30 years of experience in scientific and application-oriented research in the textile and fibre sector, including at the Fibre Institute Bremen e.V.

Hexcel and NaCa Systems develop hybrid carbon and wood fiber

Hexcel is collaborating with NaCa Systems, a Tier 1 supplier of natural fiber composite automotive interior parts, on the development of a lightweight carbon fiber prepreg and wood fiber composite sportscar seat back using a rapid press molding process. This innovation validates a short cycle time production process for CFRP and wood fiber composite parts and offers a host of benefits to automotive manufacturers.

Hexcel supplies NaCa Systems with an optimized version of its HexPly® M77CS epoxy prepreg material. HexPly® M77CS is a fast curing hotmelt, thermosetting epoxy matrix, specifically designed for prepreg applications for which short cure cycles and clear surfaces with perfect aesthetics are required.

The lightweight seat back demonstrates a 40% weight saving compared to a typical injection molded plastic component whilst also featuring a significantly improved CO2 footprint vs a full carbon part. The prepreg and wood fiber structure doesn’t produce sharp edged pieces when damaged. This innovation validates a short cycle time production process for CFRP and wood fiber composite parts and offers a host of benefits to automotive manufacturers.

Hexcel supplies NaCa Systems with an optimized version of its HexPly® M77CS epoxy prepreg material. HexPly® M77CS is a fast curing hotmelt, thermosetting epoxy matrix, specifically designed for prepreg applications for which short cure cycles and clear surfaces with perfect aesthetics are required.

The lightweight seat back demonstrates a 40% weight saving compared to a typical injection molded plastic component whilst also featuring a significantly improved CO2 footprint vs a full carbon part. The prepreg and wood fiber structure doesn’t produce sharp edged pieces when damaged. In addition, wood fiber composites also increase sound absorption, contributing to improved NVH damping within the vehicle interior.

Talking sustainability with Monforts denim customers

In the latest short film released on the Monforts YouTube Channel – captured at the recent Denim Première Vision show in London – some of the leading global manufacturers discuss their initiatives for more sustainable denim production.

Cone Denim, based in Greensboro, North Carolina, for example, can lay claim to having put in place its first environmental control measures back in the 1940s when the company first started recycling its water.

“It was a method of efficiency even back then, eighty years ago,” says Gabriel Magopat, of the company’s UK customer service centre, “but  producing high quality products is another method of being sustainable and of being efficient, and I think that’s what Cone stands for. We have an amazing history.”

Cone Denim is known for its signature S Gene® stretch denims which have traditionally incorporated polyester components to provide the stretch. It has now partnered with Intrinsic Advanced Materials of Gastonia, also in North Carolina, to introduce patent-pending CiCLO stretch polyester fibres into its denim collections.

While still being synthetic based, CiCLO polyester is able to biodegrade in marine environments, wastewater treatment plants and landfill conditions, at rates similar to natural fibres like wool. 

This more sustainable solution for stretch is also being introduced to China for the first time by another leading denim supplier, Advance Denim.

“Advance Denim is spending its resources on being the most technologically advanced company in China, and also the most sustainable,” says Mark Ix, the company’s Director of Marketing. “We are investing heavily in our manufacturing to save both water and chemicals to create cleaner products.”

Monforts denim customer Berto is a family-owned company with its main denim mill in Bovolenta, a small rural town near to Padua in the north east of Italy, where respect for the environment has always been a must.

“The family has always been focused on respect for the environment,” says Berto’s Marketing Manager Francesca Palento. “In particular, we have a river next to the company from which we take our water for production and we then return it cleaner than it was before. We are also now producing GOTS and Global Recycling Standard jean produced with yarns made from our own internal waste production.”

Pakistan’s Soorty has recently received Cradle to Cradle Gold certification – the most stringent and exacting sustainable standard currently in existence – for its Pure D range of denims. These are produced using the company’s proprietary Zero Waste Water dyeing technology, in combination with the most advanced Monforts finishing machines. 

“Our very latest collection is called Climate Jeans, because every single product we now produce draws attention to the climate emergency we are living through right now,” says Eda Dikman, Soorty’s Marketing Communications Manager. “Sustainability is very important to us because we produce at scale and all of the actions we take reflect on the planet.”

Mit dem eigenen Modelabel MAI Fashion werden handwerkliche Tradition aus Thüringen mit modern avantgardistischem Design verbunden. Das Damenlabel MIA MAI richtet sich an die stilsichere Frau ab 40 und hat vor allem bei Berliner Lehrerinnen, Journalistinnen und Ärztinnen einen festen Platz im Kleiderschrank erhalten. Das traditionelle Label LEONARD MAI besteht schon seit 1920 und richtet sich an den stilsicheren Herren. Neben vier eigenen Geschäften werden die sorgfältig konfektionierten Strickwaren in über 250 weiteren Läden in der DACH-Region verkauft.

Mit dem Siegel „Made in Thüringen“ wird bei Strick Zella ganz bewusst auf ökologisch nachhaltige Prozesse gesetzt, indem die Wege zwischen Produzenten und Konsumenten kurzgehalten werden und auf eine Herstellung im weit entfernten Ausland sowie auf die damit einhergehenden Reise- und Transportkosten bewusst verzichtet wird. Geliefert werden die hochwertigen Stoffmischungen aus Viskose, Merinowolle und Cashmere unter anderem auch an große Modedesigner wie Joop oder Guido Maria Kretschmer.

Neben seinem eigenen Modelabel hat sich der Physiker Betz aber seit Jahren auch Smart-Textiles mit beeindruckenden Zusatzfunktionen verschrieben, zum Beispiel unter den Namen KNITTY-Fi und SMOOLS. Hierbei stehen vor allem die Aspekte Robustheit, Waschbarkeit und intuitive Bedienung im Vordergrund:
Die smarte Wolle SMOOLS besteht aus einer Mischung aus Baumwolle oder Tencel mit Zellulose, in deren Zwischenräumen Kerzenwachs eingesponnen ist. Die Hauttemperatur des Trägers wird durch die entweder kühlende oder wärmende Funktion des Wachses auf 28 bis 30 °C reguliert und entlastet dadurch den Organismus und ermöglicht ein geringeres Schwitzen – eine textile Klimaanalage.

Mit KNITTY-Fi werden drahtlos arbeitende, gestrickte Taster in den Ärmel einer Jacke integriert, indem die Signale der Taster elektronisch verarbeitet und einem Empfänger gesendet werden. Die smarte Technologie unterstützt die Menschen mit motorischen Handicaps, wie beispielweise Senioren oder Behinderte, in ihrem Alltag. Nach der Konfiguration der einzelnen E-Pads lassen sich elektrische Türen oder Maschinen mittels Drucks auf die eingestrickten Aktoren der Jacke bedienen oder sogar ein Notruf von der Kleidung aus absenden.

Devan Chemicals stellt auf der bevorstehenden Heimtextil 2020 in Frankfurt am Main zwei neue biobasierte Lösungen vor.

Natürlich antimikrobiell
Der verstärkte Einsatz nachhaltigerer Produkte hat auch alternative Lösungen zur Beseitigung störender Gerüche und zur Reduzierung der Allergene von Staubmilben mit sich gebracht. Viele Pflanzen und Blumen produzieren antimikrobielle Chemikalien bei Gefahren, wie Bakterien, Pilzen und Schimmel. In Lebensmitteln und Kosmetika werden immer mehr natürliche antimikrobielle Stoffe als Konservierungsmittel eingesetzt. Landwirtschaft und Großküchen nutzen schon seit vielen Jahren pflanzliche, leicht abbaubare und geringtoxische Schädlingsbekämpfungsmittel. Diese natürlichen, bioziden Inhaltsstoffe inspirierten Devan zur Entwicklung einer neuen Produkttechnologie gegen Geruchsbildung und Staubmilben. BI-OME Natural ist eine natürliche, biobasierte antimikrobielle Lösung, um die optimale Frische und Hygiene von Textilien sicherzustellen. Ihre aktiven Inhaltsstoffe sind das bekannte Leinöl aus den getrockneten, gereiften Samen der Flachspflanze und Chrysanthemum aus den Samen von Margeritenblumen. Die aktiven Inhaltsstoffe in BI-OME Natural sind organisch, GMO-frei, biologisch abbaubar und recycelbar. BI-OME Natural wird auf der Heimtextil in den Kollektionen von Standard Fiber präsentiert.

Biobasierte PCM
Tones of Cool Bio ist eine patentierte Kühltechnologie zur Ableitung überschüssiger Körperwärme aus Textilien, um auf diese Weise auch unmittelbar die Körpertemperatur zu reduzieren. Die in Tones of Cool Bio verwendeten PCM werden aus nachhaltigen, natürlichen Quellen gewonnen.
Die PCM haben –abhängig von der Temperatur – die Form eines kristallinen Wachses oder einer öligen Flüssigkeit und sind rein pflanzlicher Natur. Darüber hinaus sind sie weniger leicht entflammbar als PCM auf Paraffinbasis. Die biologische Basis der Technologie ist nach geltenden DIN-Kriterien zertifiziert.
Kollektionen mit Tones of Cool Bio werden auf der Heimtextil von Standard Fiber, Tisseray und Comfy Quilts gezeigt. Die Technologie ist zunächst nur für Bettwaren lieferbar.
