Even if down and feather pillows and duvets are durable, they undergo a natural ageing process. While the down and feathers were stored they might have been exposed to damp or damaged.

 

You should have cleaned your pillows and duvets at the bedfeather cleaners´. They sift and clean the material there, pick out the filling components and replace them.

 

Following the care instructions, down-and-feather-filled duvets can be washed at the temperatures indicated on the label using a mild detergent. Please, dry completely, best tumble-dry. In any case, follow the instructions on the label.

Pillows can even be washed in a standard washing machine (standard washing machine: load between 6-8 kg) at up to 60 ^oC using a mild detergent (following the care instructions.) Please, dry completely, best tumble-dry. Due to their volume, down and feather duvets should better be cleaned in a commercial laundry or at bedfeather cleaners´.

 

Usually, duvets consisting of two or three single duvets which can be attached together are separated before they are washed. Thus, you can wash them in a standard washing machine.

 

Use a mild detergent (e. g. gentle detergent suitable for wool) or a special detergent for down. Do not use any optical brighteners because they might harm the filling material. Mild detergents which are suitable for wool can perfectly be used to wash down and feathers too, because they consist of the same base material: keratin.

Please, follow the temperatures and care instructions reported on the label.

It is most important to dry the bedding articles completely and thoroughly.

The reason why for instance pillows develop an unpleasant smell after they have been washed and dried, might be that the down and feathers have not been dried completely. In this case it is advisable to wash them again and dry them thoroughly until they are completely dry.
 

 

Bedding products for house-dust-mite-allergy sufferers should be washable at not less than 60°C (follow care instructions on the label). Allergens are removed during each washing cycle. To remove the mites, however, temperatures of at least 60°C are necessary.

The Association of German Allergists (ÄDA) recommends to these patients to regularly wash their duvets, bed linen etc. at at least 60°C.
 

 

To this, the following is stated in the guideline of the coalition allergy prevention (Aktionsbündnis Allergieprävention):

"Bedding should be washed at temperatures of at least 55°C (...), preferably at temperatures exceeding 60°C (...). A study performed by Stazi et al. could establish a protective effect in wheezing patients [whistling noise during the expiration phase] when the linens were washed at temperatures exceeding 60°C (...). At this temperature, maximum decrease in mite concentration could be observed in comparison with lower temperatures“.
