India: Current Trends and Opportunities in Technical Textiles

Abstract
During a conference in April 2005 in Mumbai Mr. Subodh Kumar, Textile
Commissioner of the Ministry of Textile Industry in India gave a speech
about the market, demand and main fields of application of Technical Textiles
in India.
The portion of use of textiles for industrial purposes in India at this
time is at about 17%. The world market share is at a level of about 3%
in comparison to China with a share of about already 13%. The production
of Technical Textiles in India at this moment is just right at the beginning,
otherwise the demand in the country is very large. The Indian Textile
Industry will be hardly in the position to meet the needs of the country
in the next years. The demand of Industrial Textiles for civil, industrial,
defence and police use will at first be satisfied by imports. It will
be almost impossible to manufacture special fibres, yarns and specific
fabrics in sufficient quantities in India. The requirement of nonwoven
fabrics will be exceedingly high.
According to the speech of Mr. Kumar the main emphasis will be focussed
on this demand:
- Textiles for the automotive and vehicle industry
- Geotextiles, especially for road and railway construction
- Agrotextiles, for nets, shade fabrics, mulch a.o.
- Textiles for the environment, for liquid and dust filtration
- Textiles for medical, operation purposes and hospital equipment
- Textiles for personal, ballistic and material protection
- Textiles for various industrial purposes
The Indian Government is expecting a market growth of
annually 3.5%, a size of the market of 9.15 Billion Dollar in the year
2007/08. That means about double the size of today.
In consideration of the executed decrease of duties the sales potential
of Technical Textiles and the chances of foreign industrial cooperation
with Indian companies is to name as high.
