TMAS: TEXO AB sees Demand for Compfelt Weaving Looms

TEXO AB, a member of TMAS, the Swedish textile machinery association, is currently seeing a surge in demand for its Compfelt weaving looms for press felt base fabrics.

“These are far from standard machines,” explains TEXO President Anders Svensson. “Off-the-shelf industrial weaving machines generally range in their working widths from 1.9 to 3.2 metres, with those purpose-built for technical applications such as geotextiles extending to wider widths of six metres and beyond. Meanwhile, one of the machines we have recently successfully delivered and commissioned has a working width of 23 metres and is not even the widest of the many such machines the company has engineered and delivered worldwide since its formation.”

A second recently-delivered line has a more modest working width – in relative terms – of 13 metres.

Paper machines
The demand for such machines comes from the suppliers of paper machine clothing (PMC) to paper mills, who in turn operate colossal machines for paper manufacturing.
On of the largest paper making machines is currently believed to be located on Hainan Island off the southern coast of China and is 428 metres long – roughly the length of four football pitches. Naturally, such machines require equally large-scale components, which is where TEXO comes in. All paper machines require a regular supply of PMC fabrics which are employed in three separate areas of the paper machine – the forming section, the press section and the drying section.

Press felts
TEXO Compfelt weaving machines are specifically employed for the production of endless (tubular) woven base fabrics for the press section of paper machines, where water is mechanically removed from the newly formed sheet of fibres. In the simplest press, the sheet is carried by the PMC fabric between two rolls, where water is squeezed out by the application of load and pressure. This can also be assisted by the use of vacuum and heat. The PMC fabrics here need to be replaced regularly, with a maximum lifespan of six months.

Press felts have become increasingly sophisticated over the years, consisting of complex woven base structures which are subsequently combined with nonwovens via needlepunching on equally huge machines. The woven base fabrics are primarily made from polyamide for its strength and hygroscopic and elastic properties.

Dobby harness
“A major refinement of the machine has been the ability to equip it with up to 24 dobby harness frames to meet the demand for sophisticated structures from the PMC manufacturers. Although the PMC business represents a small proportion of the total cost of manufacturing paper, it can have a significant impact on the quality of the paper, the efficiency of a machine and machine production rates.”

Another significant development has been that of a self supporting base pre-filled with concrete, which has eliminated the need to dig out foundations in a plant to support the machine.

Retrofits
TEXO’s looms are built to last, but technology moves forward, and the company is also currently active in the retrofitting of existing machines built as far back as the 1970s.

Integration
TEXO has also just integrated its offices and production centre at its base in Älmhult, Sweden, to create a unified 5,000 square metre site.

Expansion begins at Hexcel Engineered Core Operations Plant in Morocco

Hexcel Corporation hosted customers and public officials at its manufacturing site in the Midparc Free Trade Zone in Casablanca as the company broke ground on an expansion that will double the size of its existing engineered core manufacturing operation in Morocco to meet increased demand from aerospace customers for lightweight advanced composites.

The expansion, announced in September 2021, is expected to be completed in early 2023. The plant size will double to 24,000 square meters and employment is expected to increase from 120 to 400 people when the expansion is completed.

The Casablanca facility was built as part of Hexcel’s ongoing worldwide investment to create a diversified and robust global supply chain to support aerospace customers’ growing demand for engineered core. At the plant, Hexcel transforms lightweight honeycomb materials into engineered core parts to reinforce structures in the aerospace industry, particularly for aircraft, engine nacelles, and helicopter blades.

Epsons Engagement in nachhaltige Technologie

Epson setzt bei seinen Unternehmensprozessen schon lange auf Umwelt schonende Methoden. So hat das Unternehmen seit 2018 über eine halbe Milliarde Euro in die Entwicklung seiner PrecisionCore-Tintenstrahltechnologie investiert, die ohne Wärmeerzeugung funktioniert und somit eine nachhaltige Alternative zu konkurrierenden Drucktechnologien ist. Jüngste Investitionen von zusätzlichen 100 Mrd. Yen (790 Mio. Euro) sollen die Herstellung neuer Materialien und Technologien ermöglichen, die zu einer weiteren Verbesserung des Nachhaltigkeitsprofils der Epson IT-Technologien führen.

Trends und Erwartungen der Industrie
Ein neuer IDC Info Snapshot-Report, der in Zusammenarbeit mit Epson erstellt wurde, untersucht die Trends und Erwartungen der Unternehmenskunden im Druckmarkt und prognostiziert, dass die Nachfrage nach Laserdrucksystemen um 2,6% schrumpft, während für Tinte eine jährliche Wachstumsrate von rund 7%1 vorhergesagt wird.

Epson setzt bei seinen Unternehmensprozessen schon lange auf Umwelt schonende Methoden. Ein neuer IDC Info Snapshot-Report, der in Zusammenarbeit mit Epson erstellt wurde, untersucht die Trends und Erwartungen der Unternehmenskunden im Druckmarkt und prognostiziert, dass die Nachfrage nach Laserdrucksystemen um 2,6% schrumpft, während für Tinte eine jährliche Wachstumsrate von rund 7%1 vorhergesagt wird.

Der Report identifiziert darüber hinaus die Hauptgründe für diese Entwicklung: Untersuchungen der IDC ergaben, dass 88 % der in der Studie befragten IT-Manager bei der Auswahl neuer Drucksysteme die Punkte Energieverbrauch und Abfallproduktion (87 %) als "extrem" oder "sehr" wichtig erachten1. Die IDC-Studie zeigt auch, dass 78 % der Befragten Tintenstrahldrucker und Multifunktionsgeräte für umweltfreundlicher halten als Laserdrucker und Multifunktionsgeräte1.

"Heutzutage entfallen rund 10 % des Stromverbrauchs in einem Büro auf die Druckinfrastruktur. Durch die Umstellung auf Epson Business-Inkjet-Drucker sparen Unternehmen bis zu 83 % dieser Ausgaben ein", erklärt Leonie Sterk, Nachhaltigkeitsmanagerin der Epson Deutschland GmbH. "Der Klimawandel geht uns alle an, also müssen wir alle auch etwas dagegen unternehmen. Epson stellt sich dieser Verantwortung und hat deshalb hohe Summen investiert, um die Nachhaltigkeit sowohl unserer Geschäftsabläufe als auch unserer Produkte zu verbessern. Damit helfen wir auch unseren Kunden und Partnern, ihre Umweltbilanz zu verbessern."

Die grundsätzlich gute Einstellung zum Tintendruck wird auch in einem neuen IDC Vendor Spotlight-Bericht hervorgehoben. Aus ihm wird deutlich, dass etwa 65 % der europäischen IT-Führungskräfte planen, bis zur Hälfte ihrer Budgets ausschließlich für nachhaltige Produkte und Dienstleistungen zu verwenden. Aus dem Bericht geht ebenfalls hervor, dass das Vertrauen und die positive Einstellung zu Business-Tintenstrahldruckern hauptsächlich auf ihrem guten Nachhaltigkeitsprofil, der Sicherheit bei ihrem Einsatz und ihrer Compliance-Fähigkeiten beruhen1.

Tinte mit Vorteilen auch in hybriden Arbeitsmodellen
Auch die in hybriden Modellen arbeitende Belegschaft bevorzugt den Tintenstrahldruck und sucht für das Homeoffice und kleinere Arbeitsgruppen im Büro nachhaltige, kostengünstige Lösungen. Im Jahr 2021 feierte Epson den Verkauf seines 60-millionsten EcoTank Drucker2.  Auch die Epson EcoTanks reduzieren den Stromverbrauch sowie den durch Verbrauchsmaterial anfallenden Müll. Der IDC Spotlight-Bericht ergab, dass diese mit nachfüllbaren Tintentanks arbeitenden Drucker, erheblich weniger Abfall beispielsweise durch Verpackungsmaterial produzieren. Auch aus diesem Grund gibt es für diese Drucksysteme in Büros Europas eine starke Nachfrage. Aus dem Report ging zudem hervor, dass etwa 13 % der in Homeoffices arbeitende Mitarbeiter:innen bereits ihre Verbrauchsmaterialien über Abonnementmodelle beziehen. IDC sieht voraus, dass bis zum Jahr 2024 etwa 60 % der Unternehmen zu einem solchen Bezugsmodell für druckbezogene Dienstleistungen1 übergehen werden.

Kornit Atlas MAX is the first digital direct-to-garment production system to feature XDi technology, which empowers users to simulate embroidery, dye sublimation, vinyl heat transfer, and 3D graphic effects with one single-step platform, using Kornit’s eco-friendly NeoPigment™ inks. Delivering superior graphic detail, consistent retail quality, and low and consistent cost per print to ensure profitability in any quantity, the system is engineered for adaptability to long-term automation needs, which helps businesses like Snuggle address the ongoing labour shortage.

With seven Kornit Digital systems in total, Snuggle is now able to produce up to 12,000 units daily, and has expanded its production space more than threefold since first investing in the technology. While the business does include an embroidery unit, Snuggle rejected screen printing due to its slow setup process, inefficient sampling for bulk orders, and the inability to generate profit from smaller custom orders. Furthermore, digitally-enabled production on demand was critical to their adapting when the pandemic economy caused many customers to cancel bulk orders suddenly.

Die Deutschen Institute für Textil- und Faserforschung Denkendorf (DITF) führen für den internationalen Skiverband „Fédération Internationale de Ski“ (FIS) und Textilhersteller Tests an Materialien durch. Schnittschutzunterwäsche wird mit einem FIS-Label ausgezeichnet, wenn das empfohlene Mindestschutzniveau erreicht wird.

FIS, Textilhersteller und das Textilforschungszentrum haben gemeinsam den von FIS-DITF empfohlenen Mindeststandard für die Schnittfestigkeit von Skischutzunterwäsche entwickelt. Die richtige Skiunterwäsche verbessert den Schutz der Sportler vor schweren Schnittverletzungen. Um festzustellen, ob Unterbekleidung die Prüfnorm erfüllt, wird die Schnittfestigkeit des Materials anhand einer 5-Sterne-Skala bewertet.

Der Stoff muss mindestens 20 Zentimeter Schnittlänge in einem Winkel von 0, 45 und 90 Grad gegen die Skikante aushalten. Der Test simuliert einen Schnitt an einem Arm oder Bein mit einer Druckkraft von bis zu 500 N (50 Kilogramm).

Die Schnittgeschwindigkeit ist genau definiert. Um vergleichbare Daten zu erhalten, wird für jeden Test der gleiche Skityp verwendet, dessen Kanten immer exakt gleich geschliffen werden. Das Sternchen-System ist leicht zu erklären: Hält die Unterwäsche einem Druck von 100 N (10 Kilogramm) stand, erreicht sie die Mindeststufe von einem Stern. Für jede weiteren 100 N wird eine weitere Stufe und ein weiterer Stern erreicht. Es sind bis zu 5 Sterne / Stufen möglich.

Live Fast, DY führt zurück in die frühen 00er-Jahre und erinnert an eine prägende Epoche der Hip-Hop- und Streetwear-Kultur. Rund acht Monate arbeitete die LFDY-Crew an der neuen Kollektion. Als Keypiece der Kollektion präsentiert LFDY eine hochwertige, oversized Lederjacke im Bomber-Stil in den Farben Schwarz und Oliv. In dieser Saison werden die Signature Flanells zusätzlich um neue Vintage-Modelle mit aufwendigen Waschungen erweitert. Hinzu kommen sommerlich-leichte Strick-Polos in auffälligen Colorways sowie Pullover und Caps. Die Jacken-Designs werden mit besonderen Patches neu aufgelegt. Erstmalig launcht LFDY mit dem neuen Drop auch ausgewählte „Store Exclusive Pieces“, die es ausschließlich stationär in den insgesamt fünf LFDY-Stores geben wird. The Covid-19 pandemic and current supply shortages have exposed the dependence of companies on global supply chains. This situation is both a warning signal and an opportunity to boost and reorganize the local production of semi-finished products from the ground up. Reifenhäuser Cast Sheet Coating has now developed a trend-setting production process termed Ultrathin Coating, in particular for the sector of medical protective clothing. The process will permit customers to produce particularly lightweight film/nonwoven composites with greater cost efficiency and, as a result, more competitively. The patent-pending process has several advantages: It cuts film grammage by 66%; material consumption in the overall composite is reduced by 28%; and it slashes costs by up to 34% compared to conventional semi-finished products. Significant cost savings are achieved in various ways, for example, by replacing hotmelt adhesives, which reduces line maintenance to a great extent at the same time.

Even if manufacturers already produce medical protective clothing and prefer to handle the coating process internally in the future instead of importing the necessary composites, it is worthwhile to set up an in-house production facility. In either case, the investment in Ultrathin Coating usually pays for itself in less than 12 months. The lower material input also reduces the consumption of fossil raw materials and this in turn responds to the increased demand for more sustainable products.

BMBF verlängert Förderung für WIR!-Bündnis SmartERZ

SmartERZ wird bis Ende 2025 weiter durch das Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) gefördert. Mit einer Fördersumme von 6 Mio. EUR startet das Bündnis mit seinen Partnern, den laufenden Vorhaben und den neu eingereichten Projekten in die zweite Phase der Umsetzung.

Die Vorbereitungen für die zweite Förderphase des WIR!-Bündnisses „SmartERZ: Smart Composites Erzgebirge“ starteten im Juli 2021 mit dem Aufruf an alle 197 Bündnispartner (Stand: 01/2022) zur Einreichung von Onepagern. 22 dieser einseitigen Projektskizzen gingen insgesamt bis Ende August 2021 beim Verbundkoordinator Wirtschaftsförderung Erzgebirge GmbH (WFE) ein. Abgebildet wurden darin innovative Ideen und Projekte in den Bereichen Technologieentwicklung (z. B. Oberflächenfunktionalisierung), der Entwicklung von Applikationen (z. B. in den Bereichen Automotive und Bauwesen) sowie Innovationen bei der Organisations-, Fachkräfte- und Regionalentwicklung. Nach der Begutachtung durch den SmartERZ-Beirat wurden 13 innovative Projektideen für die Abgabe von vollständigen Projektskizzen ausgewählt. Diese ergänzen die Strategie des Bündnisses SmartERZ. Mit zahlreichen Partnern aus Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft soll das Erzgebirge durch Innovationen im Maschinenbau, der Elektrotechnik, Kunststoffverarbeitung, Oberflächentechnik und Textiltechnik zu einem zukunftsfähigen Wirtschaftsstandort entwickelt werden. Ziel ist die Transformation der Region Erzgebirge zu einem führenden Hightech-Standort für neuartige, funktionalisierte Verbundwerkstoffe, sogenannte Smart Composites. Diese Materialien haben ein großes Innovations- und Wachstumspotential. Sie gelten als Schlüsseltechnologie und ermöglichen langfristig eine hohe regionale Wertschöpfung.

Im Ergebnis der Forschungs- und Entwicklungsprojekte entstehen funktionalisierte Textilien, die mit Sensoren, Aktoren oder Leiterbahnen ausgestattet werden, um beispielsweise Körperfunktionen oder Transportschäden messen und melden zu können, oder funktionalisierte Matrizen, z. B. Formgedächtnispolymere, deren Form nach vorheriger „Programmierung“ thermoreversibel geändert werden kann, oder funktionalisierte Oberflächen mit Selbstheilungseigenschaften bzw. optischen und haptischen Effekten. Darauf aufbauend können funktionsintegrierte Leichtbauelemente (auch: Adaptronikleichtbau), wie Kunststoffräder mit erweiterten Funktionen, z. B. elektrische Radnabenmotoren, entwickelt werden.

Auf Basis des im Oktober 2021 beim Projektträger Jülich (PtJ) eingereichten Konzepts, der Präsentation am 25. Januar 2022 beim BMBF und der anschließenden Diskussion wurden der bisherige Fortschritt, die weitere Planung für die Umsetzungsphase und die Aussichten für eine Verstetigung des Bündnisses von der Expertenjury positiv mit folgendem Statement bewertet. „Das Bündnis ist wirtschaftsgetrieben und stark regional verwurzelt, was eine hohe Anwendungsorientierung und spätere Verwertbarkeit der Ergebnisse sowie konkrete Effekte in der Region erwarten lässt.“ In den kommenden Wochen wird sich der SmartERZ-Beirat erneut beraten, um die endgültige Entscheidung zu den eingereichten Projektskizzen zu treffen. Der Start in die zweite Förderphase, die konkrete Planung mit Timeline und das gemeinsame Ziel bis 2025hat die WFE bereits fest im Blick. Um auch die Bündnispartner und interessierte Unternehmen aus Wirtschaft und Wissenschaft mit einzubeziehen, gibt das SmartERZ-Managementteam am 7. April 2022 in der Online-Veranstaltung SmartCONNECT ein Update zu Neuerungen, Zeitplan und geplanten Projekten.

Als einwohnerstärkster Landkreis Ostdeutschlands hat das Erzgebirge eine solide Entwicklungsbasis. Mit der zweithöchsten Industrie- und Handwerkerdichte in Sachsen ist die Region in zahlreichen B2B-Zulieferketten etabliert und kann eine ausgeprägte Branchenvielfalt vorweisen. Auch die Arbeitslosenquote ist im Erzgebirge eine der niedrigsten in ganz Deutschland mit einem Höchststand an sozialversicherungspflichtigen Arbeitnehmern. Dem gegenüber stehen kleinteilige Firmenstrukturen mit geringer Produktivität, die Abhängigkeit vom Metall-Automotive-Sektor mit geringen Margen in Transformation und das niedrigste Lohnniveau auf Basis des Medianentgeltes. Hier setzt SmartERZ an: Das Netzwerk verbindet kleine und mittelständische Unternehmen und bezieht auch aktuelle Forschungsprojekte ein, so dass sich Kooperationen finden und die Innovationskraft der Region durch Wissenstransfer und Zusammenarbeit voll ausgeschöpft werden kann. Unter den 197 Bündnispartnern befinden sich 152 Wirtschaftsunternehmen, 30 wissenschaftliche und 15 gesellschaftliche Einrichtungen, die gemeinsam aktiv werden können. Der Fokus auf Smarte Composite verhilft dem Erzgebirge und der geballten Technologiekompetenz der ansässigen Unternehmen zu einer überregionalen Sichtbarkeit, was wiederum zu Aufträgen mit größerem Volumen beitragen soll. Basierend auf dieser erwünschten Entwicklung können Fachkräfte gehalten und neue Stellen zu besseren Konditionen geschaffen werden.

Die digitale Innovationsplattform innovERZ.hub wurde im Hinblick auf die projektübergreifende Innovationsentwicklung im Erzgebirge, den vorbereitenden Austausch und weitere Kooperationsvorhaben im November 2020 von der WFE ins Leben gerufen. Wirtschaftsunternehmen, öffentliche Institutionen und wissenschaftliche Einrichtungen können hier online Kooperations-, Umsetzungs- und Fertigungspartner suchen und finden.
