What should house-dust-mite allergy patients bear in mind?

For allergy sufferers the best strategy to prevent the unpleasant allergy symptoms is to avoid the substances which trigger the allergy.

The good news first: House-dust-mite allergy patients must not do without down- and feather-filled bedding anymore. The Medical Association of German Allergologists (Ärzteverband Deutscher Allergologen e. V.) recommends to use natural filling materials, such as down and feathers.

Further measures you can take:
  • Protect your mattresses with mite-proof covers (encasings). All mattresses should be provided with encasings, whether there are several people sleeping in one room or whether you are sleeping in a double bed.
  • Wash the bed linen regularly at a temperature of at least 60 oC / 140 oF.
  • Be careful what you choose, when you buy bedding articles. They should be suitable for house-dust-mite allergy sufferers. It is recommendable to pick i.e. products with the NOMITE® label. They are suitable for house-dust-mite allergy patients, because they create a bed climate, which is favourable for humans (they quickly build up warmth and quickly reduce humidity, when the beddings are aired). These are conditions detrimental to mites, which need humidity to survive. In addition the feather- and down-proof ticking fabric acts as a barrier to mite infestation.
  • Ventilate your sleeping room and keep it cool. Do not use humidifiers.
  • Low-pile carpets or floor-coverings well suitable for wet mopping are recommendable.
  • Do without anything that collects dust, i.e. open book shelves.
  • Opt for curtains made of easily washable materials.
  • Regularly wash all toys which are made of fabric at a temperature of 60 oC/140 oF or place them for two days in the freezer in order to kill the house-dust-mites.
  • Always unclothe yourself in the bathroom, not in the room in which you sleep, as undressing causes an increased number of skin scales to come off. These are a welcome food source for the house-dust-mites.
  • For your vacation travel to higher areas, which are located more than ca. 5000 ft or 1200 m above sea level.
