Giorgio Calculli has been appointed new managing director of ACIMIT, the Association of Italian Textile Machinery Manufacturers. A law graduate with a Master’s degree in training and employment policies, he has been on staff at ACIMIT since 2006 as head of the Association’s training, internal relations and technical department. Calculli takes over as ACIMIT managing director from Federico Pellegata, who after 25 years managing the Association has been appointed CEO of ACIMIT Servizi srl, the company set up by ACIMIT to provide services in support of associated member companies for the promotion of the Italian textile machinery industry in Italy and abroad.

“It has been a truly enriching experience,” asserts Federico Pellegata, “for which I am grateful to our associated members, ACIMIT’s Board, and the Association’s presidents who have served during my years in ACIMIT. However, my commitment to continue to promote the Italian textile machinery sector by no means ends here. As CEO of ACIMIT Servizi, I will continue to work relentlessly to ensure that ITMA, the world’s primary textile machinery trade fair, remains a representative showcase for the success of Italian manufacturers in the sector, as has been the case for the editions of the exhibition held in Italy in 2015 and 2023.”

ACIMIT managing director Giorgio Calculli comments: “I wish to thank the Board of ACIMIT for the appointment and for the opportunity to lend continuity to the work carried out by Federico Pellegata, for whom the success enjoyed at the latest edition of ITMA is only the most evident expression. Der Bundesverband Medizintechnologie (BVMed) hat für seine Branche einen Muster-Kodex Nachhaltigkeit veröffentlicht, der die wesentlichen Aspekte für nachhaltiges Handeln von Medizintechnik-Unternehmen zusammenfasst.

Mit diesem Muster-Kodex möchte der BVMed zu einem einheitlichen Branchenstandard beitragen. Er bietet MedTech-Unternehmen Orientierung in Nachhaltigkeitsfragen sowie die Möglichkeit, gegenüber Geschäftspartnern das eigene Nachhaltigkeitsverständnis zu verdeutlichen. Dabei geht der Muster-Kodex auf die drei Säulen der Nachhaltigkeit (sozial, ökologisch, ökonomisch) ein, bildet das dort geltende Recht ab und legt es einheitlich aus.

Übersicht der Inhalte des Muster-Kodex:

• Soziale Nachhaltigkeit: Einhaltung von Arbeitsschutzpflichten, Förderung von Diversität und Inklusion, Diskriminierungsfreiheit, Zahlung eines angemessenen und gleichen Arbeitslohns, Koalitionsfreiheit sowie Verbot der Sklaverei, Zwangs- und Kinderarbeit.
• Ökologische Nachhaltigkeit: Ressourcenschonung, Reduktion der CO2-Emissionen, Abfallreduktion und Recycling sowie Vermeidung von Umweltverschmutzung.
• Ökonomische Nachhaltigkeit und Governance: Verantwortungsvolle Unternehmensführung und Strategie sowie nachhaltige und transparente Lieferketten.

Der Muster-Kodex kann freiwillig von allen Unternehmen der Medizintechnologie für sich übernommen und um individuelle Selbsterklärungen erweitert werden.

Zur Umsetzung des Muster-Kodex Nachhaltigkeit gibt der BVMed drei Grundprinzipien vor:

• Egalitätsprinzip
  Gewährung eines unterschiedslosen Zugangs zu Medizinprodukten und damit verbundenen Gesundheitsleistungen. In Bezug auf Arbeitsbedingungen sollen vergleichbare Sachverhalte nicht ohne triftigen Grund ungleich behandelt werden.
• Vorrangprinzip
  Vorrang einer schonenden Verwendung von Ressourcen (Reduce – Reuse – Recycle) und der Einrichtung und Befolgung effizienter Prozesse.
• Vorsorgeprinzip
  Ergreifen von präventiven Maßnahmen, um negative ökologische und soziale Auswirkungen der wirtschaftlichen Tätigkeit zu vermeiden oder möglichst gering zu halten.

„Geschäftspartner:innen, Krankenhäuser und andere Stakeholder verlangen zunehmend von den Medizintechnik-Herstellern weitreichende Verpflichtungserklärungen zur Einhaltung des Lieferkettensorgfaltspflichtengesetzes. Mit unserem Muster-Kodex Nachhaltigkeit können die Unternehmen ihr soziales, ökologisches und ökonomisches Nachhaltigkeitsverständnis erklären“, so BVMed-Geschäftsführer und Vorstandsmitglied Dr. Marc-Pierre Möll. Der neue Muster-Kodex wurde vom BVMed gemeinsam mit der Anwaltskanzlei Clifford Chance entwickelt und durch das Bundeskartellamt geprüft. Bereits 2022 gab das BVMed-Institut eine Nachhaltigkeitsstudie zur Bestimmung des sozialen, ökologischen und ökonomischen Fußabdrucks der MedTech-Branche in Auftrag. Die „SEE-Impact-Study der deutschen MedTech-Branche“ des WiFOR-Instituts setzte die Grundlage für eine umfassende Nachhaltigkeitsmessung der Lieferkette und damit einen neuen wissenschaftlichen Standard. INDA, the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry, announced that it is partnering with the Waterloo Filtration Institute (WFI) to produce the 2-day FiltXPO™ conference program, October 10-11, Chicago, Illinois. WFI brings decades of filtration experience, resources, and a worldwide network to support the education and technical development of the global filtration industry.

Filtration and separation professionals from the global supply chain will connect at FiltXPO 2023 for advancements, innovations, and business development. The conference portion of the FiltXPO event will focus on advanced filtration technologies and science for products that create a cleaner, healthier, and safer world. More details about the conference will be released at a later date.

The Nonwovens Institute (NWI) is a valued partner to INDA in bringing educational offerings to the nonwoven and engineered material industry. Behnam Pourdeyhimi, Ph.D., Professor and Executive Director, The Nonwovens Institute, and his team will teach the 2-day Filter Media Course in conjunction with FiltXPO, October 9-10, at Navy Pier in Chicago.

Professor Pourdeyhimi and his team will share the latest insights in the development, testing, and application of nonwovens in air, aerosol, and liquid filtration. Participants will gain knowledge about the physics of filtration, how nonwoven filter media is designed and used in air, aerosol, and liquid applications, testing standards, unmet needs in filter media, and the latest market trends and intelligence.

Eine zunehmende Digitalisierung vieler Arbeitsprozesse hat die Anforderungen an Unternehmen stark verändert. Gerade für kleine und mittlere Unternehmen wirft die digitale Transformation viele Fragen auf. Nicht zuletzt die Frage nach neuen Modellen der Arbeit, Technologien und der Kooperation, mit denen die Herausforderungen der Zukunft bewältigt werden können.

Welchen Beitrag das Mittelstand-Digital Zentrum Smarte Kreisläufe leisten und Mittelständler auf dem Weg zum Unternehmen der Zukunft unterstützen kann, wird anlässlich der offiziellen Eröffnung des Mittelstand-Digital Zentrums Smarte Kreisläufe und des Showrooms des Transferpartners DER MITTELSTANDSVERBUND – ZGV im FRÜH am Dom in Köln vorgestellt.

Keynote-Vortragende ist Andrea Schmitz, die als Managing Partner der Berliner Transformationsberatung St. Oberholz, systemisch ausgebildete Organisations- und Teamentwicklerin, (Agile) Coach und SCRUM-Master eine Expertise für die Themen der ganzheitlichen Transformationsbegleitung und Teamentwicklungen besitzt. In ihrem Vortrag mit dem Titel „Neues Arbeiten für die digitale Welt: Die Bedeutung von New Work im Wandel“ spricht sie über Herausforderungen und Lösungsansätze, wie mittelständische Unternehmen in Zeiten ständiger Transformation wirksam agieren können. Sie erklärt, welche Fähigkeiten, Kompetenzen und Einstellungen sowohl Führungskräfte als auch Mitarbeitende benötigen, um in der digitalen Ära nachhaltig erfolgreich zu sein und zukunftsfähig zu bleiben.

Eine anschließende Podiumsdiskussion greift das Thema auf und beleuchtet mit Gästen aus Wirtschaft, Politik und Wissenschaft diskutieren, vor welchen Herausforderungen Unternehmen aktuell stehen, wie sie sich den neuen Aufgaben stellen und welchen Beitrag das Mittelstand-Digital Zentrum Smarte Kreisläufe leisten kann.

West Yorkshire is to have a first-of-its-kind apprenticeship training course for textile engineering technicians, reflecting a resurgence in the industry locally, and more generally in the UK.

Calderdale College has partnered with the Textile Centre of Excellence (TCoE) and the British Textile Machinery Association (BTMA) to develop the bespoke Level 3 apprenticeship course which will start in September 2023.

Engineering Technician apprentices at Calderdale College will receive training from the TCoE, helping them to develop the engineering maintenance skills required to close the skills gap in West Yorkshire’s textile industry.

While the region has been a flourishing hub for textile excellence since the 19th century and is being revitalised through digitalization and the localisation of supply chains, its success is currently being hindered by an ageing workforce and high staff turnover.

Through adapting the engineering training at Calderdale College to address the current requirements of the textile industry, the unique new course will ensure the passing on of vital know-how and good practice aligned with the new skills demanded by Industry 4.0 and automation.

Collaborative Apprenticeships
Calderdale College has developed the programme over a two-year period through close collaboration with the TCoE and the BTMA, as well as through consultation with British heritage weaver AW Hainsworth and a number of other local textile companies.

The course launch follows on closely from the success of the Collaborative Apprenticeships project launched in 2022 at Calderdale College. To date, this has seen the college engage with over 100 local employers on the benefits of increasing the quantity and improving the quality of the apprenticeships that they offer, as well as encouraging others to introduce apprenticeships for the first time.

“Over the years, we’ve seen how beneficial apprenticeships can be for several sectors, particularly in terms of helping businesses to retain staff and ensuring that they have a steady flow of skilled workers coming in,” said Claire Williams, head of employer engagement at Calderdale College. “Having identified that employers in the textile manufacturing industry were struggling to find apprenticeship training that was designed around their needs, we knew that alongside employers and our partners, we needed to satisfy this critical gap in the market. We hope that this programme will act as a leading example for the rest of the industry to follow.”

Die Spezialisten in der Hutbranche sind zufrieden bzw. sehr zufrieden mit dem ersten Halbjahr 2023. Nach der schwierigen, wetterbedingten Situation im Frühling, entwickelten sich der Juni und auch der Juli sensationell gut. Wichtigstes Verkaufsthema war der UV-Schutz für den Kopf. Laut Blitz-Umfrage des Hutverbandes GDH erzielte der Deutsche Hutfachhandel ein Umsatzplus in Höhe von 9,4 % im Vergleich zum Vorjahreshalbjahr. Vor allem der stationäre Umsatz war dafür verantwortlich, zu Lasten des Onlineverkaufs.

„Die meisten unserer Mitglieder haben die Umsätze von vor Corona getoppt. Das ist sehr erfreulich“, bestätigt Angela Breiter, Vorsitzende der Gemeinschaft deutsche Hutfachgeschäfte e.V. (GDH). Die Mitinhaberin des traditionsreichen Hut- und Modeunternehmens Breiter in München leitet seit zwei Jahren den Hutverband, der vor 70 Jahren gegründet wurde.
 
Hutbranche traf sich zum Messe-Get-together in Düsseldorf
„Der Termin in Düsseldorf ist genau richtig für unsere Branche, um sich zu informieren “, so Angela Breiter. „Wir können an einem Ort die wichtigsten Lieferanten besuchen, können Partnerschaften vertiefen und haben eine gute Trendanalyse über das Angebot und lernen noch neue Lieferanten kennen.“ Siegfried Seidl (Hut Mayer, Neuötting), Vize-Vorsitzender der GDH, fügt hinzu: „Erfreulicherweise sind die Preissteigerungen durch Energie-, Logistik- und gestiegenen Personalkosten der letzten Jahre vorerst gebremst. Einige Lieferanten sind kreativ, zum Beispiel durch Paper-Panamas, um die enorm gestiegenen, wenn auch faireren Preisen, im Bereich Panama auszugleichen, denn die werden in Ecuador in Wochen und Monaten in Handarbeit hergestellt. Nicht jede Kundin oder jeder Kunde kann sich einen Panamahut von 150 oder mehr Euro leisten.“
 
Trend-Thema: Funktion in allen Facetten
Leger und unkompliziert praktisch muss es für die Träger sein. Viele Qualitäten sind weich oder rollbar und bleiben auch aus dem Koffer oder aus der Tasche gezogen in Form. Wasserfeste Hüte kommen als Trilbys und Mützen daher oder als hippe Traveller für die Streetwork-Szene und nicht zuletzt als knallige Regenhütte in Lack. Mega-Thema ist UV-Schutz. Der Schutz vor zu viel Sonne wird aufgrund des Klimawandels mit steigenden Temperaturen immer wichtiger. Zahlreiche Lieferanten bieten zertifizierte UV-Schutz bis zu 80 an. Das erlaubt einen bis zu 80-mal längeren Aufenthalt in der Sonne. „Ein bedeutendes Umsatzthema für den Sommer“, betont Angela Breiter. „Wir als Verband unterstützen unsere Mitglieder mit einer erfolgreichen UV-Schutzkampagne für den POS.“

Trend-Thema: Materialien, Muster und Farbe
Sommerhüte in Stroh oder Strohborte werden durch weiches Raffia in allen Formen und Farben ergänzt, auch wenn Naturtöne das stärkste Verkaufsthema sind. Seidig, edel und komfortabel zu tragen sind Mützen aus Seide; verschiede Lieferanten haben das Thema neben Leinen und Baumwolle ausgebaut. Karos, Streifen, Mustermix, Patchwork: Alles ist möglich. Super leicht und dennoch robust und zudem nachhaltig, weil nachwachsend, ist Hanf. Ein Thema, das jetzt auch verstärkt in der Herrenhutmode umgesetzt wird. Generell ist Nachhaltigkeit von Bedeutung und findet sich in den Stoffen oder Futter aus recycelten oder ökologischen Materialien wider.

INDA, the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry, announced that registration and tabletop exhibit reservations are open for the ninth edition of Hygienix™, November 13-16, New Orleans, Louisiana. More than 450 absorbent hygiene and personal care professionals from around the world will gather for four days of networking, presentations, and business opportunities.
 
The theme for this year’s Hygienix is “Shaping the Future of Absorbent Hygiene.” The event will focus on the market’s continued growth with presentations on sustainability, technology advancements, disruptive small brands, and market data and trends. Hygienix will also offer a workshop on absorbent hygiene systems led by Jim Robinson, Absorbent Hygiene Insights, LLC, Monday, November 13^th. The full Hygienix program will be announced at a later date.
 
INDA is also introducing a new element for Hygienix – pre-conference webinars. Carlos Richer, Principal, Diaper Testing International, will present insights and trends in diaper design in the U.S. market and Heidi Beatty, CEO, Crown Abbey, LLC, will share her expertise in the absorbent hygiene sector.
 
More than 50 companies will showcase their innovations and technologies during the evening tabletop exhibits and receptions. Participants will be able to discuss their needs with technical leaders and source better solutions for their products, Nov. 14-15.
 
Nominations are being accepted through August 7th for the Hygienix Innovation Award™. Three finalists will be selected to present their absorbent hygiene products on Tuesday, November 14^th to hundreds of senior-level professionals. The winner of the Award will be announced at the end of the event, Thursday, November 1^6th.

The EU's planned ban on the entire group of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) would endanger many industrial processes, states VDMA Textile Machinery. Textile manufacturing would be affected twice – by missing important chemicals for technical textile production and by the lack of indispensable textile machine components. The latter would affect the whole supply chain from textile machinery manufacturers and its suppliers to the textile industry in the EU.

Solid PFAS parts are widely used in textile machinery production, especially where extreme conditions prevail. Verena Thies, Managing Shareholder Thies GmbH & Co. KG, explains: “Our textile dyeing machines are world leaders and set standards in efficiency and sustainability. They work under pressure at temperatures of up to 140° C using highly acidic, highly basic and/or oxidative or even reductive chemicals. This is precisely why PFAS is needed, for example, in seals and rings, flaps as well as valves for a long-lasting and high-quality machine concept – because there are no alternatives with qualitatively equivalent properties. In addition, PTFE semi-finished products enable a sliding and gentle contact with the textile fabric in ecologically important techniques in the transformation of textile wet finishing."

PTFE and also FKM are fluoropolymers (fluoroplastics and fluoroelastomers), a group within the broad PFAS range of about 10,000 substances which would be banned for production, use and sale in the EU. They are high-tech materials, and as so-called "polymers of low concern" are not a danger to the environment, according to the OECD. Furthermore, these components are installed inside a machine and exchanged or disposed of properly. PFAS such as PTFE and FKM must be exempted from the ban, demands the VDMA in its position paper.

"In this way, the association also supports the approach taken in Great Britain. With the 10,000 substances, everything is lumped together, although the various PFAS groups are very different," warns Dr Sarah Brückner, Head of VDMA Environmental Affairs and Sustainability. "We should take our cue from the UK and look at the substance groups in a differentiated way."
Apart from several types of dyeing machines, PFAS components are indispensable in textile drying machines (e.g., conveyor dryers, tumblers and stenters) and damping machines. They are also used in fully automatic chemical dispensing systems and pressure vessels for thermochemical treatment of textile recycling material, heat recovery systems and wastewater treatment technology. This means that a lot of machines needed for a sustainable textile production would be affected by the PFAS ban.

VDMA Textile Machinery will take part in the ongoing EU public consultation. The association will describe indispensable key functionalities and conditions of use in the textile machinery sector as well as the consequences for the companies and the customers in the EU if the ban is imposed. The consultation ends on September 25, 2023, and VDMA urged its members affected by the planned restriction to participate in the consultation at an early stage. This is the only way to ensure that the broad scope of the mechanical and plant engineering sector is represented.

Der Landes-Accelerator „Stoff im Kopf“ wird auch in Zukunft vom Land Baden-Württemberg gefördert. Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, Ministerin für Wirtschaft, Arbeit und Tourismus, überreichte Edina Brenner, Hauptgeschäftsführerin des Wirtschafts- und Arbeitgeberverbands Südwesttextil, auf der Startup-BW Night in Mannheim am Donnerstag, den 13. Juli 2023, den Förderbescheid. Das Land fördert das Programm bis Ende 2024 mit 190.000 Euro im Rahmen der Landeskampagne Startup BW.

Zweimal im Jahr werden rund 14 Gründungsteams aus Baden-Württemberg und darüber hinaus ausgewählt und für vier Monate zu allen gründungsrelevanten Themen unterstützt. Die Teilnehmenden erhalten Workshops, einen individuellen Coach, Unterstützung von Expertinnen und Experten aus der Textilbranche sowie Zugang zu Laboren und Werkstätten der TEXOVERSUM Fakultät Textil. Bislang haben über 100 Teams an dem Programm teilgenommen. Der Frauenanteil ist hier überdurchschnittlich hoch. Die Gründungsthemen reichen von nachhaltigen Modelabels, über KI-Lösungen, z.B. um die Nähte zu analysieren, bis zu wiederverwendbaren Windeln, kooperativen Projekten mit Handarbeiterinnen in Peru oder Greifrobotern für Textilproduzenten.

Hauptgeschäftsführerin Edina Brenner, Südwesttextil e.V., freut sich über die Förderzusage: „Junge Gründerinnen und Gründer bringen wichtige Impulse für die Textilindustrie. Für Südwesttextil ist es ein wichtiges Anliegen, hier Unterstützung zu bieten und zum Aufbau wichtiger Netzwerke beizutragen.“

Die Hochschule Reutlingen führt das Programm bereits seit 2019 durch. Nach der Eröffnung des von Südwesttextil gespendeten Neubaus „Texoversum“ auf dem Campus der Hochschule Reutlingen Anfang Juli wird die Partnerschaft mit dem nun gemeinsamen Programm „Stoff im Kopf“ weiter ausgebaut und intensiviert.

At the association’s General Assembly held on July 4th, Marco Salvadè has been appointed to replace Alessandro Zucchi as President of ACIMIT.

Marco Salvadè began his career at Salvadè Srl, the family company specializing in the finishing machinery sector, founded by his father and uncle in 1967. After being a member of the company’s board of directors, he has been President since 2021.

Following the election of Salvadè, the General Assembly expressed its gratitude to the outgoing president, Alessandro Zucchi, who has guided the association for the past six years.

Along with the new president, the General Assembly also elected its new Vice Presidents, Chiara Bonino (Bonino Carding Machines SRL), Federico Businaro (Sperotto Rimar SRL), Ugo Ghilardi (Itema SpA) and Cristian Locatelli (Marzoli Machines Textile SRL). Marco Salvadè’s first comments as newly appointed ACIMIT president: “I wish to thank the Assembly for the trust they have placed in me, and I want to express my gratitude to the former President Alessandro Zucchi for everything he has done during the last six years to strengthen the role of the association and of Italian industry on the international scene. With the new vice-presidents and the ACIMIT Board, I will continue the work that has been done in recent years by previous presidents. It will certainly not be a simple task, but one that will no doubt prove stimulating. My primary goal is to increase the sense of belonging to ACIMIT of its member companies, with which we share the same values, and to adjust the association’s strategies to changing conditions in the economic and geopolitical context.”
