APR: Blockchain-Based ‘Follow Our Fibre’ Refreshed

  • Conservation and Biodiversity Information Now Available

Asia Pacific Rayon’s (APR) Follow Our Fibre is a blockchain-based tool that allows users access to information in real-time on the source of the raw materials in their garments and the origination of the fibre.

Launched in May 2019, the platform is now refreshed to include information of its suppliers’ conservation and biodiversity efforts, taking information transparency and richness to a new level. The refresh comes at a time when the fashion industry, through the Fashion Pact, is beginning to embrace biodiversity as a core focus on its agenda.

Follow Our Fibre now maps APR’s supply chain right down to locations of forest plantation concessions and conservation areas. The textile fibre producer’s suppliers are collectively responsible for the conservation of more than 3.12 million hectares of forests around the world, including boreal and peat swamp forests. These protected forests have rich biodiversity like the elusive Sumatran Tiger and Canadian Boreal Caribou, and provide ecosystem services, including 22 rivers and tributaries totalling over 900km.

Follow Our Fibre reflects the company’s long-term objectives for sustainable pulp sourcing and responsible manufacturing, and is a tool for its customers and stakeholders to trace finished products back to forest plantation origins, as well as monitor the environmental performance of APR’s supply chain.

The collaboration between Tonello and denim designer Piero Turk gave birth to a sustainable denim collection, result of a combination of the latest responsible technologies, and created with the most eco-friendly fabrics selected by The Kingpins Show.

“When it comes to working on new developments, we always start from new ideas and the constant research that starts from a concept that becomes reality, by increasingly raising the bar of sustainability,” said Alice Tonello, R&D and Marketing Director of Tonello.

This is a radically new conception thought to simplify and optimize the entire garment finishing process.

Finally we use Metro, our software that processes real data, in real time to check all laundry consumption, optimizing processing times and improving performance.

The All-in-One System performs all washing operations by integrating 4 sustainable technologies into a single machine: ECOfree 2, which uses ozone in both the water and air; NoStone® for authentic and pumice-free stone-wash effects; UP, for washing processes with at least 50% less water; Core, a nebulizing system improving performance and reducing water consumption.

As a result of The Laundry (R )Evolution, Tonello developed two innovative and patent-pending processes: OBleach and Wake.

OBleach is the new Tonello process, which, by using only ozone, “returns to the future” with an authentic, sustainable and cool Bleach. Without chemicals.
This is possible thanks to a combination of the technologies part of our All-In-One System.
In short, the real Bleach without Bleach has finally arrived. And this in the year of the total ban of permanganate too.

Wake is the first totally natural dyeing system that uses only plants and biodegradable vegetable waste like flowers, berries and roots, without harmful chemicals additives.

HITEXBAU geht mit Carbonbeton in die Offensive bei der industriellen Fußbodensanierung

Carbonbeton bringt zahlreiche Vorteile in der bautechnischen Verstärkung und Instandsetzung mit sich, speziell auch bei der Sanierung von Industriefußböden. Die HITEXBAU GmbH produziert auf Wirkmaschinen neuester Bauart und mit eigenen Beschichtungsanlagen Armierungsgitter für Beton aus Carbon, Basalt und AR-Glas. In einem innovativen, vollautomatischen Prozess können besonders großflächige und vielfältige Hochleistungs-Carbongelege kostengünstig für die Baubranche hergestellt werden. Wie zum Beispiel für die tschechische Firma Immogard s.r.o., die an verschiedenen Standorten Industrieflächen vermietet, u.a. im Industriepark Libravské Údolí. Hier waren rund 3.000 m² Industrieböden in drei Hallen zu sanieren. In Kooperation zwischen HITEXBAU und der Koch GmbH, Kreuztal, einem Spezialisten für Carbonbetonanwendungen im Sanierungsbereich, wurde ein Instandsetzungskonzept erarbeitet.

Spezielle Projektanforderungen: Hohe Traglast auf schwierigen Untergründen

Aufgrund der stark sanierungsbedürftigen Böden und sehr schwieriger Untergründe – minderfester Altbeton mit partiellen Ausbrüchen und Rissen, teilweise mit nicht tragfähigen Beschichtungen – war es wichtig, eine robuste und dauerhafte Lösung zur Erneuerung des Fabrikbodens umzusetzen. Zudem mussten hohe Nutzungsanforderungen als Produktionshalle mit dynamischen Sonderlasten durch bis zu 15 Tonnen schwere Maschinen sowie Staplerverkehr berücksichtigt werden. Die Randbedingungen und Gegebenheiten ergaben zwei Alternativen für die Erneuerung der Hallenböden: Den kompletten Rück- und Neubau der Böden aus Stahlbeton oder die Sanierung mit Carbonbeton.

Bodensanierung mit Carbonbeton: schneller und preiswerter

Nach Kostenermittlung beider Varianten empfahl sich eindeutig die Sanierung mit Carbonbeton. Diese brachte auch weitere, wesentliche Vorteile mit sich: Eine sehr schnelle Instandsetzung mit geringen Ausfallzeiten von lediglich 2 bis 3 Wochen vom Start des Projektes bis zur vollen Belastbarkeit und Nutzung des Bodens mit schweren Maschinen und Staplern. Zum Vergleich: Der vollständige Rück- und Neubau einer Stahlbeton-Bodendecke von 12 cm Stärke, ohne Beschichtung, würde 8 bis 10 Wochen benötigen. Im Kostenvergleich lag die Carbonbeton-Variante ca. 20 % unter der Stahlbeton-Variante. Die Instandsetzung mit Carbonbeton eines weniger geschädigten Bodens ohne Sonderbelastungen ergäbe einen Preisvorteil von über 30 %.

Unterschiedliche Carbon-Gelege: von flexibel bis starr und mit diversen Geometrien

Ziel der Instandsetzung war ein mechanisch stark beanspruchbarer, abriebarmer Boden. Für die neuen Industrieböden der drei Fabrikhallen – eine große Halle mit ca. 2.300 m², eine Halle mit ca. 380 m² und eine Halle mit ca. 600 m² altem Fliesenbelag – kamen je nach Erfordernis unterschiedliche Arten der Untergrundvorbereitung (Stemmen, Fräsen, Schleifen, Kugelstrahlen) zur Ausführung. Nach der Grundierung der Flächen wurden rund 5.000 m² der Carbonbewehrung verlegt. Optimal abgestimmt auf die unterschiedlichen Oberflächen wurden nach vorherigen Tragfähigkeitsberechnungen flexible und starre Gitter-Gelege diverser Geometrien kostenoptimiert verwendet.
     
3.300 m² Bodensanierung mit Carbonbeton in nur 2 bis 3 Wochen

Die Instandsetzung von industriellen Böden mit Carbonbeton erfolgt in sechs zeitnahen, zum Teil abschnittsbezogen, parallellaufenden Schritten: Abfräsen, Kugelstrahlen, Grundieren, Carbon-Gelege aufbringen, Egalisierungsschicht, abriebfeste Deckschicht.

Sappi presented its latest developments, future prospects and current range of packaging and speciality papers at the event. In addition to further networking opportunities, the visitors took full advantage of the chance to get in contact with the Sales team.

Featuring integrated barriers, they ensure that the product quality of foods and other goods is preserved. The second generation of barrier papers, now even more environmentally friendly, was also introduced at the virtual event. Another area of focus of the virtual interpack event was sealable papers, suitable for a wide range of packaging applications in the food and non-food sectors.

Of course, the concept of sustainability was also a key issue at the conference. As a home-compostable paper, Algro Nature meets the current demand for fully recyclable packaging. Autoneum already offers various multifunctional technologies that meet the high standards for Autoneum Pure products: Ultra-Silent for underbody systems or battery undercovers, Di-Light for carpet systems, Prime-Light and IFP-R2 for inner dashes and floor insulators as well as Hybrid-Acoustics PET for e-motor encapsulations and engine-mounted parts, which was launched in fall 2019.

With Mono-Liner, the latest innovation for wheelhouse outer liners is also included in the Autoneum Pure portfolio. Among other things, the Mono-Liner-based components convince thanks to their lightweight construction, thereby contributing to lower vehicle weight with correspondingly less fuel consumption and emissions. The excellent life cycle assessment is also based on their particularly resource-saving manufacturing: Production cut offs of the components, which consist to a large extent of recycled PET fibers, can be processed into pellets and completely returned to the manufacturing process as fibers. An SUV and a crossover model from a US vehicle manufacturer already benefit from Mono-Liner wheelhouse outer liners.

The collection was designed starting from the needs of the athletes with the aim to offer them the best solution in terms of style and ergonomics, high performance, easy maintenance and perfect fit being also sustainable.

Ispo 2020 saw the celebration of the partnership started last year between Scott Racing Team, Rosti, Sitip and ROICA™ by Asahi Kasei for the supply of the team riders’ uniforms. Rosti worked on style and packaging, Sitip on technical fabrics ‘BE-HOT - Heat Generating fabrics’, while ROICA™ provided its premium stretch ingredient. The collaboration carries an interesting news: uniforms are not just highly performing but also, and above all, sustainable.

Sitip created the Native fabric entirely made with recycled yarns and featuring the premium high performing  ROICA™ EF elastomer. The yarn is certified GRS - Global Recycled Standard certification (and also provides special dyeability) with Rosti’s design and high care garment manufacturing.

The main rider of Scott Racing Team Italy, the young and award-winning champion Juri Ragnoli, the “end user” of the uniforms, explaines the requirements that garments should possess in order to meet the sporting challenges that await athletes: breathability, comfort on the skin, performance, durability of the shape and maintenance of the characteristics throughout the course of use of the garment. When asked about the arrival of a new sustainable uniform, the champion said that “it’s right and important to take this direction, which perfectly meets the team’s values, as love for nature and respect for the environment. It will be nice to wear something that follows exactly what you believe in”.

A task force of Italian textile companies active in our area supported the first call to action launched at the fashion world by four women who have always been involved in the field of sustainability. The appeal launched on March 19th by the green journalist Diana de Marsanich, Giusy Bettoni, founder and CEO of C.L.A.S.S. (Creativity Lifestyle and Sustainable Synergy)the eco multi-platform hub specialized in integrating a new generation of eco values into fashion, products and companies, Simona Roveda, Editorial Director and Director of Institutional Communication of LifeGate and Marina Spadafora, Italian Country Coordinator of Fashion Revolution and currently collaborating with Luxury Fashion Brands to implement responsible strategies in their companies have luaunched a call-to-action project which has brought together textile companies to manufacture PPE garments for the medical staff working in San Gerardo Hospital in Monza, near Milan.

The companies that answered the call-to-action are: Filo d’Oro, Mantero, ROICA™ by Asahi Kasei, C.L.A.S.S. (Creativity Lifestyle and Sustainable Synergy) e Zerobarracento, Iluna Group, Lg Electronics, Jimmy Lion, Personal Genomics, Isamar Holyday Village, Marcolin Eyewear, Maglificio Ripa.

During the last weeks the 4 women collected about 1,800 non-drip cotton and non-woven TNT gowns for sanitary use, about 400 protective masks for multipurpose washable, bacteriostatic, breathable and water-repellent prevention, 1,000 washable cotton surgical caps, 150 complete protective googles eye masks, two microwave ovens for hospital departments to offer support to medical and healthcare personnel by helping them in the few breaks during the grueling shifts of this period, a supply of samples of cotton socks, 300 cotton masks + polyester outer layer, water-repellent and antibacterial, and free weekly stays made available to doctors, nurses, civil protection personnel and families with related children involved in the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Lenzing Group received confirmation of the full biodegradability of its fibers in fresh water by the independent research laboratory Organic Waste Systems (OWS). The new and existing international certifications conducted by OWS and issued by TÜV Austria verify that LENZING™ Viscose fibers, LENZING™ Modal fibers and LENZING™ Lyocell fibers are biodegradable in all natural and industrial environments: in the soil, compost as well as in fresh and in marine water.

The biodegradability of cellulosic products and the synthetic fiber polyester was tested in fresh water at OWS according to valid international standards, e.g. ISO 14851. At the end of the trial period, LENZING™ wood-based cellulosic fibers, cotton and paper pulp were shown to be fully biodegradable in fresh water in contrast to synthetic polyester fibers. The fact that synthetic materials are not biodegradable leads to major problems in wastewater treatment plants and potentially marine litter. In turn, this not only harms fish and birds living in and close to the oceans but also all marine organisms and us humans.

Both the textile and nonwovens industries face huge challenges with respect to littering. If current trends continue, the oceans could contain more plastic than fish by 2050. Therefore, legislative bodies worldwide can no longer ignore the issue and have moved towards plastics legislation aimed at limiting the vast amount of waste. In response, European lawmakers issued the Single-Use Plastics Directive currently being transposed into national legislation in the EU member states.

Conventional wet wipes and hygiene products mostly contain plastic and were thus identified as one of the product categories to be singled out. Less polluting alternatives are generally encouraged by NGOs and legislators, e.g. products made of biodegradable wood-based cellulosic fibers. Plastic waste including microplastic can persist in the environment for centuries. In contrast, biodegradable materials are the best alternative to single-use plastics because they fully convert back to nature by definition and thus do not require recycling.

Unabhängige Tests haben gezeigt, dass sich aus PrimaLoft® Bio™-Fasern nach vollständigem chemischem Recyceln 95 % hochqualitatives Material gewinnen lassen. Damit können wieder Isolationen oder Funktionsstoffe hergestellt werden, die nichts an Leistung eingebüßt haben.

In einer echten Kreislaufwirtschaft liegt der Fokus auf Abfallminimierung sowie Wiedergewinnung und Wiederverwertung von Ressourcen. Damit sinkt der Bedarf, neue Rohstoffe in das System einzuführen. „Der Natur etwas zurückgeben“ lautet das Motto der Initiative, die PrimaLoft zum Start der diesjährigen Ausgabe der Banff Center Mountain Film Festival World Tour gemeinsam mit dem Veranstalter Moving Adventures ins Leben gerufen hat. Für jeden 25. Zuschauer der Tour, auf der auch in diesem Jahr wieder rund 35.000 Outdoor-Fans erwartet werden, spendet der Innovationsführer im Bereich Performance-Textilien einen Baum für ein Waldprojekt in der Region Schliersee (Bayern), das unter anderem Aufforstungen in Bergregionen betreibt. Ziel ist es, bis zum Ende der Tour auf 1.200 Bäume zu kommen, die dann im Herbst gepflanzt werden sollen.

Im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Filmfestivals, die auf pure Action nach der Devise „schneller, höher, weiter“ setzen, rückt das BANFF Kurzfilmfestival das Naturerlebnis in den Mittelpunkt und legt den Fokus auf nachhaltige Themen. „Und genau das macht dieses Sponsoring so attraktiv für uns.   • MARCHI&FILDI, spinning group located in North-Italy focused on innovation and sustainability, producer of the ECOTEC® yarns, with huge reductions on environmental impact; up to 78% in water, 56% in CO2 emissions and energy consumption. The same technology is used to produce yarns for Berto.

These companies collaborated on this exclusive project where the yarn is made through ECOTEC® System by MARCHI&FILDI, the fabric is made by BERTO, the garments are designed and made by BLACKHORSE LANE and finally washed by EVEREST.
