ISKO and MoRe Research: New possibilities for cellulose-based materials

As one of the driving forces helping to create a fully circular fashion industry, ISKO has partnered with Swedish research and development company MoRe Research, a part of RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, to investigate and develop new, sustainable technologies made from cellulosic-based materials, derived from waste textiles, for the company’s 25,000+ range of products. It is hoped that this research will also help make the production of cellulose-based materials more sustainable.

The work with MoRe Research feeds into ISKO’s Responsible Innovation™ strategy and will link with various sustainability projects the company is working on. For example, ISKO recently signed an agreement with HKRITA to license its Green Machine – a unique technology that fully separates and recycles cotton and polyester blends at scale.

For example, ISKO recently signed an agreement with HKRITA to license its Green Machine – a unique technology that fully separates and recycles cotton and polyester blends at scale.

ISKO will leverage MoRe Research!s expertise and resources to find ways of repurposing the clean and toxic-free cellulose powders that are created from the decomposed cotton, as well as the recycled polyester and reintegrate this back into fabric production. By using all of the outputs from the recycling of textiles back into textiles, the prospect of a closed-loop system becomes more feasible.

The investment in this new technology is the latest in ISKO’s ongoing drive for advancements in sustainability. As part of the company’s R-TWO™ program ISKO is also working to develop fabrics with a guaranteed minimum +50% GRS (Global Recycle Standard) recycled content blend. This will significantly reduce the carbon and water footprint of a fabric, as well as make it easy to trace a garment’s sustainable journey step-by-step from the beginning of the supply chain through to the end product.

Lectra announces the acquisition of Gemini CAD Systems

Lectra announces the signature of an agreement to acquire the entire capital and voting rights of the Romanian company Gemini CAD Systems. A major global player in the fashion, automotive, and furniture markets, Lectra designs and produces industrial intelligence solutions – software, hardware, data and services – for brands, manufacturers and retailers.
The acquisition is in line with Lectra’s strategy of developing its presence in the fashion market, enriching its value proposition and fashion software portfolio.

Founded in 2004, Gemini CAD Systems (Gemini) has developed several innovative software solutions, essentially Computer Aided Design (CAD), for small and medium-sized fashion companies. Thanks to its network of partners, Gemini is present in over 60 countries.

The transaction concerns the acquisition of 60% of Gemini right now for 7.6 million euros. The acquisition of the remaining capital and voting rights will take place in two steps, in September 2024 and September 2026. The total consideration for the acquisition of 100% of Gemini’s capital will depend on Gemini’s revenue growth, and should be comprised of between 13 and 20 million euros.

This year, Riri Group published its first Sustainability Report, calculated in compliance with Global Reporting Initiative Standard (GRI), and adopted recycled polyester as production standard for zips’ tapes.

Biophilic
A way to honor love for life, this line emphasizes the importance of physical and mental wellbeing, answering the questions raised during the challenges faced in the last year. Balance with nature becomes a concrete product circularity operation resorting to manufacturing processes with a low environmental impact and to organic and biodegradable materials. Among them stands out recycled polyester for zips which is Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certified, Global Organic Textile Standard certified organic cotton and other alternative fibers, such as nettle, a natural resource that is a great alternative to synthetic fibers. Rivets, zips, buttons and metal components are made of stainless steel, which guarantees durability and resistance, 100% recycled copper and aluminum – light, ductile and resistant to oxidation. Among the most interesting solutions are rice peel powder – used on buttons’ overseals – and eco-sustainable thermoplastic polyurethane, obtained from renewable raw sources.

Stones & Gold
Sophistication and advanced craftsmanship mark the pieces of this creative path which, inspired by goldsmith and glyptic craft tradition, reveals a delicate sense of positivity and richness. Gems, lapis lazuli, marble, and mother-of-pearl are protagonists of a refined selection of accessories designed to amaze and catch the eye, resembling actual jewels. Stahl: Full integration of PielColor

Stahl announces plans to fully integrate its leather-finishing subsidiary, PielColor, into its core business by the end of 2021. The move will see PielColor’s products and expertise brought entirely in house, strengthening Stahl’s offering to its customers while improving the visibility and reach of the PielColor brand.

Stahl acquired PielColor, a company specializing in the manufacture and marketing of chemical products for leather finishing, in 2004. The subsidiary focuses on specific customer segments within the leather market, such as high-fashion brands, and is known by customers for its support-driven and solutions-oriented approach. PielColor also offers several innovative product lines, including a range of low-impact water-based topcoats, which it is able to tailor to its customers’ requirements.

Marketing PielColor as a Stahl group brand will also drive the visibility and market reach of PielColor products, including in regions where they are less well established.

The integration program will continue to take place over the remainder of 2021, with all parts of the PielColor business expected to be fully operational under the new structure by the end of the year.

Mit Abschlussarbeit „Sorry“ auf der Mercedes-Benz-Fashion-Week

Artenschutz ist das Thema der Abschlussarbeit „Sorry“ von Eva Viola Emmermann, Textil-Studentin an der Hochschule Niederrhein. Am 8. September wird sie ihre Kollektion vor professionellem Publikum und internationaler Presse auf der Mercedes-Benz-Fashion-Week in Berlin präsentieren. Eine Jury bestehend aus Mitgliedern der Industrie und der Hochschule wählten die Outfits der Doppelstudentin aus insgesamt sieben Kollektionen aus.
 
Eva Viola Emmermann setzt sich mit ihrer Kollektion „Sorry“ kritisch mit dem Thema Artenschutz auseinander. Musterungen und Strukturen der Kollektion sind inspiriert von in Deutschland gefährdeten Arten, sowohl Tieren als auch Pflanzen. Um die Kollektion möglichst nachhaltig zu gestalten, wurden biologisch abbaubare oder recycelte Materialien ohne Fasermischungen verwendet.

Um die Kollektion möglichst nachhaltig zu gestalten, wurden biologisch abbaubare oder recycelte Materialien ohne Fasermischungen verwendet.
 
Die Doppelstudentin in den Studiengängen Textile Technologien und Design-Ingenieur Textil hat sich mit der Flächengestaltung im Strick, Gewebe, in der Lasertechnologie und besonders dem Printdesign beschäftigt. „Der Fokus meiner Arbeiten lag während meiner gesamten Studienzeit auf dem Thema Nachhaltigkeit. Hier wurden vorwiegend Kritiken in Musterungen versteckt, mit dem Ziel einer positiven und nachhaltigen Wirkung beim Betrachter“, sagt Eva Viola Emmermann.
 
Ihre Abschlussarbeit wird zusätzlich zusammen mit sechs weiteren Kollektionen, die Studierende aus dem Fachbereich Textil- und Bekleidungstechnik entworfen haben, auf der Berliner NEOFASHION gezeigt. Die NEOFASHION ist Teil der Berliner Fashionweek und bietet eine Modenschau für Mode-Absolventen aller Hochschul-Ausbildungsstätten in Deutschland.
 
Aktuell beteiligen sich 13 Ausbildungsstätten an der Show. Alle Studierenden, die für die Hochschule Niederrhein ins Rennen gehen, haben sich mit dem Thema Nachhaltigkeit befasst. „Die Branche muss sich ändern, die Jungdesigner rufen zum Umdenken auf und stoßen auf taube Ohren“, so Professorin Jutta Wiedemann, die die Teilnahme der Hochschule Niederrhein organisiert hat.

CHIC Shanghai in October instead of August 2021

Instead of taking place from August 25-27 as originally planned, Asia's leading trade fair for fashion and lifestyle will now be held from October 9-11, 2021 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai. The fair has been taking place physically again since July 2020, always in compliance with strict safety and hygiene regulations. Various digital platforms are being set up in parallel.

The around 500 brands registered for CHIC (August) will now present themselves to the trade visitors in autumn on 62,000 sqm, including important industry players such as JINTIANSHI (menswear), VINI Bespoke (menswear), Zaijiu (womenswear), Jiebeidi (womenswear), COFNA (childrenswear), Laura Vita (shoes), Hattershub (headwear), MANNYLONQ (CHIC-Young Blood) and Dragon Heart (CHIC-Young Blood) and exciting up-and-coming designers such as KIMUSSO, Yujiantian and Wuma.

Autumn Editions of Intertextile Shanghai and Yarn Expo postponed

In light of recent Covid-19 cases in China, the Autumn Editions of Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics, Intertextile Shanghai Home Textiles and Yarn Expo will be rescheduled to 9 – 11 October 2021. The fairs were originally due to take place at the end of August at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai).

Ms Wendy Wen, Senior General Manager of Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd explained: “To comply with the government guidelines for pandemic containment and following discussions with our stakeholders, we have made the decision to postpone the fairs from their original August timing. To allow our exhibitors and buyers as much time as possible to plan ahead, we have already confirmed new dates with the fairground for the three concurrent fairs: 9 – 11 October.”

Die „Krefelder Laufmasche", ein seit 2018 bestehendes Modefestival für Nachwuchsdesigner, findet vom 3. bis 9. August 2021 in der Krefelder Innenstadt statt. Im Rahmen des einwöchigen Events wird die renommierte Auszeichnung, die „Goldene Seidenschleife", verliehen.

Mit Lena Claus, Sirilak Majaroen und Isabel Benrat nehmen drei Absolventinnen des Düsseldorfer Fashion Design Instituts (FDI) am diesjährigen Wettbewerb teil und stellen ihre Fähigkeiten unter Beweis. Die Bewerber*innen mussten mindestens zehn sogenannte Key-Pieces mit Skizzen und Erklärungen einreichen. Auch in diesem Jahr wird die Jury bei der Bewertung besonders auf Tragbarkeit und Innovation der ausgestellten Stücke achten.

Green fashion community to meet at INNATEX

The 48th INNATEX is opening its doors at the Messecenter Rhein-Main in Hofheim-Wallau from 31 July to 2 August 2021. More than 200 labels are poised to appear at the international trade fair for sustainable textiles. Following a long string of industry gatherings being cancelled due to COVID-19, the summer trade fair is a first opportunity for the sector to get together. All visitors are required to register digitally  in advance of the fair.

The pandemic has presented an opportunity to launch new projects. They include a special zone created in collaboration with GIZ GmbH, the German society for international development, which will shine a light on African designers. 13 labels from Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda will present their ideas for sustainable textiles and fashion products.

The starting point for the special area is a virtual trade fair, commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. GIZ GmbH has realised the joint project in cooperation with several partners; its physical extension can be visited at INNATEX.

Exhibitors include well-known pioneers and young newcomers
The IVN (International Association of Natural Textile Industry), which sponsors INNATEX, is staging its own pop-up showroom. In doing so, the association is creating its own curated space, showcasing the diversity and special features of its members. The future objective is to expand this space with the organiser to create a growing Concept Area that introduces visitors to different ways of presenting green fashion.

Besides the IVN, the Global Organic Textile Standard, the Green Button and Fairtrade are among the other standardisation bodies represented at the fair. In addition, a special exhibition entitled “Fashion in the Hood” (Fashion im Kiez) and delivered by the young interest group “Frankfurt Fashion Movement”, helps visitors join the dots in the fashion industry. Among the labels exhibiting at the fair for the first time are Active Wear by Klitmøller Collective from Denmark, Organic Fashion by Bibico from the UK and Italian sneaker brand ACBC.
