INDA moves IDEA® to a two-year cycle and FiltXPO™ to every 18 months

INDA, the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry, announces that IDEA® – an event for the Nonwovens & Engineered Fabrics Industry – will be held every two years instead of three starting in 2024.

The upcoming dates for IDEA® under the new schedule will be March 28-31, 2022, as currently scheduled, and then April 23-25, 2024. Both will be held as live, in-person events at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Florida.

“INDA has three key reasons for making this change in event frequency,” said Dave Rousse, INDA President.  “First, the nonwovens industry has been a vibrant, innovative sector with new products, processes and materials every year, so providing an opportunity to showcase more frequently these new developments better serves the industry. Second, one of the major nonwoven events in Asia has declared they will run each and every year, impacting the past three-year cycle of major shows in the nonwovens industry. Third, coming out of the Covid pandemic, market research predicts for the near future that regional events are expected to be better supported than global events.”

Carbon is the main element in numerous materials used in industrial processes and in our daily lives. It is currently mostly provided from fossil sources. But what if carbon could be used directly from CO2 emissions? Biotechnology shows particularly great potential for the eco-effective conversion of climate-damaging CO2 emissions into valuable basic chemicals. A consortium of 12 partners investigated this pathway in the EU-funded BioRECO2VER project, examining the conversion of CO2 emissions from refineries and the cement industry into the chemical building blocks isobutene (C4H8) and lactate (C2H6O3).

Innovative chemo-enzymatic concept for CO2 Capture
Project partner Luleå University of Technology (LTU) focused on the first process step of capturing and concentrating CO2 from industrial point sources. Their team developed a hybrid chemo-enzymatic process consisting of a novel solvent blend and an ultrastable carbonic anhydrase (CA) enzyme. The solvent blend included an amino acid ionic liquid and a tertiary amine and displayed a good compromise between enzyme compatibility, absorption rate, capacity and desorption potential. In addition, LTU generated ultrastable enzyme mutants that showed 50% increased resistance to selected flue gas inhibitors compared to the original CA. This 3-component CO2 capture process was scaled up in a pilot rig, and the set-up further used for real off gas pre-treatment in the project.

Two unique pilots for biotechnological CO2 Conversion/Utilization
The biotechnological conversion of (captured) CO2 and the co-substrate hydrogen by microorganisms poses technical and economic challenges because it takes place in the liquid phase and the substrates are gases which are poorly soluble. The BioRECO2VER project investigated two approaches to address this: fermentation under elevated pressure and bio-electrochemistry with in situ production of hydrogen.

Pressurized fermenter
Project coordinator VITO designed a flexible and multifunctional high-pressure fermenter, customized for research activities with advanced online sensors, monitoring and control, and also including a membrane filtration unit to achieve high concentrations of the microbial biocatalysts. The set-up was broadly tested in the BioRECO2VER project both with pure CO2 and CO2-rich off-gases but can also be used for investigations involving other poorly soluble gases, such as methane, oxygen, or synthesis gas. Pressures up to 10 bar can be applied.

First solely CO2-based bio-electrochemical platform
University of Girona designed and tested a bio-electrochemical platform. The key differentiators of the pilot plant are:

  • Two parallel lines to test engineered strains and bio-electrochemical systems
  • Fully automated pilot plant capable to control key operational parameters (pCO2, pO2, pH2, pH, Temperature) to intensify the process performance
  • Solid-liquid separation unit (membrane) to recover the planktonic cells and return them into the bio-electrochemical systems.

This unique infrastructure will be used beyond the project to support further research and development activities in the broad area of CO2 capture and conversion.

Since few days, most countries have been facing a new wave of Covid, reinforced by the rapid expansion of the Omicron variant. Impacted by this surge, many companies among the 1,700 companies that have confirmed they will attend M&O in January at the Parc des Expositions of Paris-Nord Villepinte, indicate that they don’t want their employees to take risks and are now alerting to the disruptions they are experiencing in their operations. The obligations of compliance with isolation rules, even when people are vaccinated, and the numerous work absences are in fact starting to seriously disrupt the functioning of their services, supply or production circuits.

Moreover, facing the peak of contamination, several countries are currently taking restrictive measures regarding international travel. Measures which are now delaying or discouraging visitors from confirming their attendance. In addition, the French government has announced, December 27th 2021 a 2.000 people gauge for major events, so probably fairs such as Maison&Objet Paris.

Under these circumstances, seeking to avoid a risky situation and committed to making all efforts to ensure an optimal return on investment for exhibitors, buyers and specifiers, the SAFI decides to postpone the next session of the Maison&Objet trade event from 24th to 28th March 2022. Period for which we hope to see an improvement in the situation.

Exhibitors who have already confirmed their registration and location may have the same location conditions, which will allow them to keep the same stand showcase. Likewise, visitors who have already ordered their badges for the January edition will of course have access to the show from March 24th to 28th, 2022.

With an opening scheduled for the day before, Maison&Objet In The City, an event organised on the sidelines of the Maison&Objet fair and offering a journey of discoveries in the heart of Parisian showrooms, will be held from 23 to 28 March 2022.

By postponing the fair until the end of Q1, SAFI wishes to bring together the best operational and healthy conditions to allow actors in the art of living, decoration, and design to be inspired, to accelerate their development and to forge new business relationships

In summary: the next editions of the Maison&Objet fairs will therefore be: March 24th - 28th, 2022 + September 8th - 12th, 2022

The political situation for renewable carbon from biomass, CO2 and recycling for the defossilisation of the chemical and materials industry has begun to shift fundamentally in Europe. For the first time, important policy papers from Brussels and Germany take into consideration that the term decarbonisation alone is not sufficient, and that there are important industrial sectors with a permanent and even growing carbon demand. Finally, the need for a sustainable coverage of this carbon demand and the realisation of sustainable carbon cycles have been identified on the political stage. They are elemental to the realisation of a sustainable chemical and derived materials industry.

They are elemental to the realisation of a sustainable chemical and derived materials industry.

The goal is to create sustainable carbon cycles. This requires comprehensive carbon management of renewable sources, which includes carbon from biomass, carbon from Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) – the industrial use of CO2 as an integral part – as well as mechanical and chemical recycling. And only the use of all alternative carbon streams enables a true decoupling of the chemical and materials sector from additional fossil carbon from the ground. Only in this way can the chemical industry stay the backbone of modern society and transform into a sustainable sector that enables the achievement of global climate goals. The Renewable Carbon Initiative’s (RCI) major aim is to support the smart transition from fossil to renewable carbon: utilising carbon from biomass, CO2 and recycling instead of additional fossil carbon from the ground. This is crucial because 72% of the human-made greenhouse gas emissions are directly linked to additional fossil carbon. The RCI supports all renewable carbon sources available, but the political support is fragmented and differs between carbon from biomass, recycling or carbon capture and utilisation (CCU). Especially CCU has so far not been a strategic objective in the Green Deal and Fit-for-55.

This will change fundamentally with the European Commission's communication paper on “Sustainable Carbon Cycles” published on 15 December. The position in the paper represents an essential step forward that shows embedded carbon has reached the political mainstream – supported by recent opinions from members of the European parliament and also, apparently, by the upcoming IPCC assessment report 6. Now, CCU becomes a recognised and credible solution for sustainable carbon cycles and a potentially sustainable option for the chemical and  material industries. Also, in the political discussions in Brussels, the term “defossilation” is appearing more and more often, complementing or replacing the term decarbonisation in those areas where carbon is indispensable. MEP Maria da Graça Carvahlo is among a number of politicians in Brussels who perceive CCU as an important future industry, putting it on the political map and creating momentum for CCU. This includes the integration of CCU into the new Carbon Removal Regime and the Emission Trading System (ETS).

As the new policy documents are fully in line with the strategy of the RCI, the more than 30 member companies of the initiative are highly supportive of this new development and are ready to support policy-maker with data and detailed suggestions for active support and the realisation of sustainable carbon cycles and a sound carbon management. The recent political papers of relevance are highlighted in the following.

Brussels: Communication paper on “Sustainable Carbon Cycles”
On 15 December, the European Commission has published the communication paper “Sustainable Carbon Cycles” . For the first time, the importance of carbon in different industrial sectors is clearly stated. One of the key statements in the paper is the full recognition of CCU for the first time as a solution for the circular economy, which includes CCU-based fuels as well. The communication paper distinguishes between bio-based CO2, fossil CO2 and CO2 from direct air capture when addressing carbon removal and it also announces detailed monitoring of the different CO2 streams. Not only CCU, but also carbon from the bioeconomy is registered as an important pillar for the future. Here, the term carbon farming has been newly introduced, which refers to improved land management practices that result in an increase of carbon sequestration in living biomass, dead organic matter or soils by enhancing carbon capture or reducing the release of carbon. Even though the list of nature-based carbon storage technologies is non-exhaustive in our view, we strongly support the paper’s idea to deem sustainable land and forest management as a basis for the bioeconomy more important than solely considering land use as a carbon sink. Surprisingly, chemical recycling, which is also an alternative carbon source that substitutes additional fossil carbon from the ground (i.e. carbon from crude oil, natural gas or from coal), is completely absent from the communication paper.

Berlin: Coalition paper of the new German Government: “Dare more progress – alliance for freedom, justice and sustainability”
The whole of Europe is waiting to see how the new German government of Social Democrats, Greens and Liberals will shape the German climate policy. The new reform agenda focuses in particular on solar and wind energy as well as especially hydrogen. Solar energy is to be expanded to 200 GW by 2030 and two percent of the country's land is to be designated for onshore wind energy. A hydrogen grid infrastructure is to be created for green hydrogen, which will form the backbone of the energy system of the future – and is also needed for e-fuels and sustainable chemical industry, a clear commitment to CCU. There is a further focus on the topic of circular economy and recycling. A higher recycling quota and a product-specific minimum quota for the use of recyclates and secondary raw materials should be established at European level. In the coalition paper, there is also a clear commitment to chemical recycling to be found. A significant change for the industry is planned to occur in regards to the so-called “plastic tax” of 80 cents per kilogram of non-recycled plastic packaging. This tax has been implemented by the EU, but most countries are not passing on this tax to the manufacturers and distributors, or only to a limited extent. The new German government now plans to fully transfer this tax over to the industry.

Düsseldorf: Carbon can protect the climate – Carbon Management Strategy North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW)
Lastly, the RCI highly welcomes North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW, Germany) as the first region worldwide to adopt a comprehensive carbon management strategy, a foundation for the transformation from using additional fossil carbon from the ground to the utilisation of renewable carbon from biomass, CO2 and recycling. For all three alternative carbon streams, separate detailed strategies are being developed to achieve the defossilisation of the industry. This is all the more remarkable as North Rhine-Westphalia is the federal state with the strongest industry in Germany, in particular the chemical industry. And it is here, of all places, that a first master plan for the conversion of industry from fossil carbon to biomass, CO2 and recycling is implemented. If successful, NRW could become a global leader in sustainable carbon
management and the region could become a blueprint for many industrial regions.

Freudenberg Performance Materials will therefore adjust our prices for all their Colback® and Lutradur branded nonwoven products for flooring and filtration application by double-digit increases depending on product types.

In order to achieve high acoustic performance at minimum weight and maximum sustainability, Autoneum is continuously advancing its textile product portfolio. When it comes to components for the vehicle interior, for example, standard thermoplastic felts excel through their acoustic absorption, robustness and environmental friendliness. However, since felt-based materials are generally less voluminous and moldable as foam components, they require more weight to thoroughly fill the areas of varying thickness between the surface of the component and the vehicle’s body-in-white. In contrast, Autoneum’s Flexi-Loft technology is significantly lighter, more flexible and more adaptable than standard felts. INDA: Innovations in Hygiene & Personal Care at Hygienix™ 2021

With enthusiastic participant registration and continued strong growth projected in absorbent hygiene & personal care markets, excitement is building for the seventh edition of Hygienix as it returns as an in-person event just weeks away, Nov. 15-18, in Scottsdale, Arizona.

With enthusiastic participant registration and continued strong growth projected in absorbent hygiene & personal care markets, excitement is building for the seventh edition of Hygienix as it returns as an in-person event just weeks away, Nov. 15-18, in Scottsdale, Arizona.

INDA reports that more than 300 participants have signed up to attend the conference with participation expected to approach pre-pandemic levels in the 500 range.

The Hygienix conference program will focus on compelling topics including New Options for a Responsible End-of-Life; Product and Process Innovation in Absorbent Hygiene Products (AHPs); Haptics: Four Approaches to Assessing Feel, and E-Hygiene Advancements; Absorbent Hygiene Products Market Stats, Trends and Policy Insights; Feminine Care: Challenges to the Status Quo; and New Approaches and Unmet Needs in Baby and Incontinence AHPs.

The conference will also feature two nonwovens workshops, a welcome reception and opportunities for 60 tabletop displays with receptions.

Archroma announces a general price increase across its portfolio

Effective 01 October 2021, Archroma will increase the prices of its products by up to 0.25 USD per kg. These adjustments will apply to all Archroma products globally. The increase is necessary to offset the ongoing exceptionally high freight and logistics costs.

“Archroma made every effort to absorb these increases,” says Marcos Furrer, Chief Operating Officer at Archroma. “We have however reached a point where these adjustments are needed for us to be able to maintain our service levels.”

Denim manufacturers employing Monforts technologies showcased their latest activities, including sustainable fabric manufacturing, new advances in fibres, dyes and chemicals, as well as process and supply improvements and recycling options, at Première Vision’s Digital Denim Week, held from July 5-9.

The users of Monforts equipment included AGI Denim (Pakistan), Azgard 9 (Pakistan), Berto (Italy), Bossa (Turkey), DNM (Turkey), Kilim (Turkey) and Orta (Turkey).

The new Naveena Denim Mills (Pakistan) Holistic collection, for example, employs a suite of sustainable materials such as organic cotton and post-consumer and post-industrial waste cotton that has been shredded and recycled at its in-house unit in Pakistan.

Supply chain transparency is also becoming increasingly important, and Turkey’s Bossa is now sharing information on its dyes, energy sources and recycled content use with its customers. At that top level, small differences in body core temperature can make the difference between being on the podium or sometimes not even finishing the race.

Am 3. Juli 2021 erhielten 203 Absolventinnen und Absolventen ihre Bachelor- oder Masterdiplome in den Bereichen Design, Film und Kunst. Elf Abschlussarbeiten wurden prämiert: von experimentellen Bauanleitungen für Kassettengeräte über künstlerisch verarbeitete Geschichten von Frauen, denen das Schwimmenlernen verwehrt wurde, bis zu surrealistischen Comics über desillusionierte Gurus.

In diesem Jahr haben 170 Absolventinnen und Absolventen ein Bachelordiplom erhalten in den Bereichen Animation, Video, Camera Arts, Graphic Design, Illustration (Fiction und Nonfiction), Objektdesign, Textildesign, Kunst & Vermittlung, XS Schmuck, Design Management, Inter-national sowie Digital Ideation (gemeinsames Angebot mit dem Departement Informatik). 33 Studierende schlossen ein Masterstudium in Design, Film oder Kunst ab. Die Diplomfeier fand im Rahmen der Werkschau Design & Kunst 2021 statt. Dabei wurden Förderpreise für elf herausragende Abschlussarbeiten vergeben:

Der Förderpreis Master of Arts in Design ging an Alexandra Gurtner aus Rotkreuz ZG für ihre Arbeit «(in)visible mind – Psychische Gesundheit an der Hochschule». Gurtner kreierte ein Arbeitstool, das Hochschulen helfen soll, die psychische Gesundheit von Studierenden ganzheitlich und effektiv zu adressieren. Basis dafür war eine Untersuchung der Angebote und Maßnahmen an der Hochschule Luzern und Feedbacks von betroffenen Studierenden. Der Förderpreis ist mit 5’000 Franken dotiert. Er wird gemeinsam von den beiden Vereinen «Luzern Design» und «Swiss Design Transfer» sowie der Hochschule Luzern vergeben.

Der ebenfalls mit 5’000 Franken dotierte Preis der Max von Moos-Stiftung geht an Sebastian Haas, Absolvent des Master Kunst aus Köniz BE, für seine Werkserie «Das sich bildende Dritte».
Die von Haas mit der Technik der Hinterglasmalerei bemalten und durch Hitze verformten Glasscheiben spiegeln so stark, dass sich die Betrachterinnen und Betrachter selbst als amorphe Figur darin erkennen können. Ändert man den Blickwinkel, entstehen stets neue situative und virtuelle Bilder, die das rätselhafte Dritte darstellen.

Die zeugindesign-Stiftung zur Förderung der visuellen Gestaltung verlieh fünf mit je 4’000 Franken dotierte Förderpreise an:

  • Petra Baumann, Absolventin Bachelor Illustration Nonfiction aus St. Gallen. Sie kreierte für ihre Diplomarbeit «Von Bryum bis Sphagnum» eine Website über die wundersame und vielfältige Welt der Moose im Botanischen Garten St. Gallen.
  • -Sandro Ramseier, Absolvent Bachelor Illustration Fiction aus Interlaken BE. Sein surrealistisches Comicprojekt «Shantiland» handelt von den Sehnsüchten eines desillusionierten Nachwuchsgurus in einer Welt zwischen Yogamatten, Räucherstäbchen, Nihilismus, Transzendenz und Ausverkauf.
  • Jonathan Müller, Absolvent Master Film aus Rehetobel AR. In seinem Abschlussfilm «Eduardo Spelterini» erforscht er das Leben des Schweizer Luftfahrtpioniers, Opernsängersund Lebemanns, der mit einem Ballon die Alpen überquerte. Müller kombinierte für seinen Film Bewegtbild-Sequenzen mit Archivfotos.
  • Dan Wenger, Absolvent Bachelor Animation aus Basel. Der Film «Screen Time» beginnt harmlos: Ein Daumen berührt den Bildschirm eines Smartphones. Was als unschuldiger Zeitvertreib beginnt, entwickelt sich zu einem Dauerkonsum, angetrieben von unaufhörlichen Wisch-und-weg-Bewegungen…-Yvee Nogara, Absolventin Bachelor Textildesign aus Zürich. Sie wirft in ihrer Abschlussarbeit «TYvee Shopping» einen satirischen Blick auf den Konsumwahn. Ihre aus gebrauchten Stoffen und Restmaterialien hergestellten textilen Objekte bietet Nogara in einer medialen Inszenierung an, die mit ihrer übertriebenen Ästhetik an die Teleshopping-Sendungen der 90er-Jahre erinnert.

Der mit 3’000 Franken dotierte Preis der Stiftung Alan C. Harris und Else Harris geb. Treumann wird an eine Absolventin oder einen Absolventen des Master Kunst verliehen. Er geht heuer an Anđela Rončević. Die gebürtige Kroatin hat im leeren Schwimmbecken des Kulturlokals Neubad Luzern die audiovisuelle Installation «I Will Swim» eingerichtet. Besucherinnen und Besucher hören darin die mit Wassergeräuschen unterlegten Geschichten von 20 Frauen aus verschiedenen Ländern, die nicht schwimmen können. Rončević untersucht mit ihrem Werk, wieso das Recht, schwimmen zu lernen, weltweit immer noch zahlreichen Frauen vorenthalten wird.

Der Förderpreis Design & Kunst/Alumni Hochschule Luzern in Höhe von 2’021 Franken – die Preissumme ergibt sich aus der aktuellen Jahreszahl – geht an Jost Zeindler aus Bern für seine Abschlussarbeit «Tape Tech» im Bachelor Illustration Nonfiction. Zeindler untersuchte darin, was es braucht, um eine gute Bedienungs- oder Bauanleitung zu gestalten. Er goss die so gewonnenen Erkenntnisse in ein Magazin für experimentelle Audio-Elektronik, in dem er diverse Anleitungen für Kassettengeräte visualisierte.

Der Preis der Swiss Design Association (SDA) honoriert hervorragende Diplomandinnen und Diplomanden der SDA-Partnerhochschulen. Die Preissumme beträgt 500 Franken sowie eine dreijährige Jungmitgliedschaft bei der SDA. Der Award geht an Martina Häusermann aus St. Gallen. Die Absolventin des Bachelor Objektdesign entwickelte für ihre Abschlussarbeit «Pressed Motion» bewegliche Aufsätze in der maschinellen Keramikextrusion, also der Produktion kontinuierlicher Keramikstränge. Diese eröffnen dank dynamischen Strukturen, Formübergängen und Durchdringungen neue Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten im Kunsthandwerk oder in der Architektur.

Die Auszeichnung Chapeau! Preis für Theorie BA-/MA-Arbeit ist mit je 500 Franken für herausragende theoretische Bachelor-, respektive Masterarbeiten dotiert:
-Den Preis für die beste Masterarbeit erhielt Sebastian Haas für seine Untersuchung zu spiegelnden Erscheinungen im Bildraum. Haas ist auch Träger des Max von Moos-Preises (siehe oben).
-Sophie Germanier aus Zürich erhielt den Preis für die beste Bachelorarbeit für «Welcome tomy MUD-dy World». Der Audioguide der Absolventin des Bachelor Kunst & Vermittlung führt in eine schlammige, von fressenden und defäkierenden Würmern bewohnte Welt. Der Guide und weitere Abschlussarbeiten des Bachelor Kunst & Vermittlung Luzern werden in der Ausstellung «Connection Requested» (18.–29. Juli 2021) im Kunstpavillon Luzern gezeigt.

FibreCoat GmbH from Aachen, Germany, together with DBF Deutsche Basalt GmbH, developed a completely new type of fibre material to shield electromagnetic radiation from digital end devices, medical technology or e-car batteries cheaply and effectively. The joint project was awarded the overall prize of the“ IQ Innovationspreises Mitteldeutschland“ on 24 June in an online event broadcast live from Leipzig.

The prize is endowed with €15,000 and was sponsored by the Halle-Dessau, Leipzig and East Thuringia Chambers of Industry and Commerce.

FibreCoat GmbH from Aachen, Germany, together with DBF Deutsche Basalt GmbH, developed a completely new type of fibre material to shield electromagnetic radiation from digital end devices, medical technology or e-car batteries cheaply and effectively. Electromagnetic radiation from smartphones, hospital diagnostics and electric car batteries must be shielded so that they do not inter-fere with each other. To prevent mutual interference, they have so far been covered with metal fibre fabrics, a very time- and energy-consuming and thus expensive procedure. The new material from Basalt Faser GmbH and FibreCoat GmbH prevents this with a fibre core made of melted, thinly drawn basalt, which is coated with aluminium and bundled into the so-called AluCoat yarn. This yarn remains just as conductive and shielding, but is lighter, stronger, cheaper and more sustainable than previous alternatives. In addition, there are further advantages:

  • The number of process steps required is reduced from ten to one.
  • 1,500 metres of yarn are produced per minute instead of the previous five metres.
  • The energy required is only 10 per cent of the previous amount.

The result is a price that is twenty times lower.

The textile made of AluCoat fibres is versatile and flexible: as wallpaper it can shield 5G radiation in offices or medical rooms or encase batteries and thus ensure the smooth functioning of electric cars. AluCoat is already being used in some companies. A European fibre centre in Sangerhausen is being planned for mass production.

The two innovative companies DBF Deutsche Basalt GmbH and FibreCoat GmbH from East and West combine the two materials basalt and aluminium to protect against electromagnetic radiation. In doing so, they coat basalt with aluminium and, through this novel combination, create an inexpensive, sustainable and quickly produced alter-native for a market worth billions.

FibreCoat GmbH from Aachen is a spin-off of the Institut für Textiltechnik (ITA) of RWTH Aachen University; the managing directors Dr Robert Brüll and Alexander Lüking and Richard Haas have completed their doctorates at the ITA or are in the process of preparing their doctorates. Georgi Gogoladze, Managing Director of Deutsche Basaltfaser GmbH, also studied at RWTH Aachen University. The two managing directors Brüll and Gogoladze know each other from their student days.
