PCMC, BW Converting Solutions augment leadership team

  • Senior leaders appointed to grow Green Bay operations, expand in global markets

Paper Converting Machine Company (PCMC), as part of Barry-Wehmiller’s Converting Solutions platform, has filled several key roles on the leadership team in Green Bay in alignment with the platform’s strategic plan to grow local operations and expand its global footprint.

Scott Bean has joined as Executive Vice President of Operations. He will drive manufacturing capacity and excellence across the platform’s five facilities in Green Bay, as well as its European locations in Lucca, Italy; Neuwied, Germany; and Čačak, Serbia. Bean brings 20-plus years of experience leading operations at several large global manufacturers, including Milwaukee-based Rexnord and most recently, Filtration Group, where he served as a President.

Jason Hilsberg, who joined PCMC in 2003 as a Field Service Leader and has held numerous other roles, including Sales Director, has been named Vice President of Lifecycle Support. In his new role, he leads the global field service, customer technical support and equipment modification sales teams.

PCMC and its divisions, Hudson-Sharp and Northern Engraving, have expanded their footprint in the tissue and nonwovensconverting, bag-converting and flexographic-printing equipment markets in recent years, reporting significant revenue growth in 2021. The company has been a fixture in Green Bay since 1919.

The Supervisory Board of Lenzing AG has appointed Stephan Sielaff, the former CTO/COO of Lenzing AG, as the new CEO effective April 01, 2022. Stephan Sielaff holds a degree in chemical engineering and held various management positions at Unilever and Symrise from 1993 to 2014. Between 2014 and 2020, he was responsible for the strategic development of the company as a Member of the Board of Directors (COO) at the Swiss specialty chemicals company Archroma – an important supplier of the textile and paper industry. He was appointed Chief Technology Officer and COO of Lenzing AG as of March 01, 2020.

CFO Thomas Obendrauf has informed the Supervisory Board that he will not be available for a further extension of his contract, which expires in June 2022. The Supervisory Board of Lenzing AG is already working on a timely replacement. Mr. Obendrauf will be available to the company in an advisory capacity until a successor is appointed.

Peter Edelmann will leave the Supervisory Board upon his own request, effective April 26, 2022. Cord Prinzhorn will return to the Supervisory Board and will take over as Chairman.

Murat Dogru joins EDANA as Deputy General Manager

  • In a meeting dedicated to reviewing the association’s 2021 figures, validating ambitious projects, and preparing for the future, beyond this year’s final celebrations of its 50th Anniversary, the Board of EDANA appointed Mr Murat Dogru as Deputy General Manager.

The governors also confirmed that Murat will take over from Pierre Wiertz as General Manager, from 1st July 2022 onwards. Pierre will then officially retire after 18 years in this position and a 39 year long career at EDANA.

Mr. Dogru, 42 years old, holds an MSc in Advertising and Communications and has over 10 years of association management experience through various management consultancy positions within MCI, following 5 years as advertising sales executive for The Economist. He is fluent in English and French, with an excellent command of Arabic and Turkish.

Mit knapp 20 Jahren bei Gregory Mountain Products ist John Sears so etwas wie ein Urgestein. In unterschiedlichsten Funktionen und Positionen hat er die Entwicklung der Marke in den letzten beiden Jahrzehnten maßgeblich geprägt. Seit Januar 2022 ist er nun Global General Manager von Gregory. Zuletzt verantwortete John Sears als Vice President Design & Product die globale Produktentwicklung und Produktion, Marketing und Vertrieb in Nordamerika, sowie die Geschäftsführung. In dieser Zeit verzeichnete Gregory ein ebenso konstantes wie nachhaltiges globales Wachstum. John wird weiterhin vom Headquarter im nordamerikanischen Salt Lake City (Utah) aus tätig sein und berichtet direkt an den Samsonite Vorstand USA.

Auch in Europa tut sich etwas: Marc Morell – bisher Sales Manager Gregory für Deutschland und Österreich – hat seit dem 1.1.2022 eine neue Rolle: Als Sales Manager Central Europe wird er neben dem deutschen Markt insbesondere die Vertriebspartner in Österreich, der Schweiz, Italien, Tschechien und auf dem Balkan beim Vertriebsaufbau und der Stärkung der Markenpräsenz unterstützen.

Vom Samsonite Europa-Headquarter im belgischen Oudenaarde aus, hat Kristof Verleyen – Mitarbeiter der ersten Stunde – maßgeblich zum Verkaufserfolg der letzten Jahre beigetragen. Er wurde ebenfalls zum 1.1.2022 zum Supervisor Sales Operations befördert. In dieser Funktion wird er seine derzeitigen Aufgaben weiterführen, sich aber verstärkt auf die Bereiche Berichtswesen, Verkaufsaktivierung, Lagerverwaltung und Supply Chain Management konzentrieren.

Ebenfalls in Oudenaarde begrüßt Gregory ein neues Teammitglied im Bereich E-Commerce: Mar Segura Ferrer. Als E-Commerce Specialist verantwortet sie seit dem 1.11.2021 die digitale Präsenz von Gregory Mountain Products auf dem europäischen Markt. Zuvor war die gebürtige Spanierin im Marketing von Buff (Barcelona) und zuletzt beim katalanischen Fremdenverkehrsamt Brüssel im Bereich Abenteuertourismus tätig.

INDA Announces Six New Board Members and Officers

  • INDA, the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry, today announced six new board members and its 2022 slate of officers to guide the success of the nonwovens industry and its members.

Elected by the INDA membership to three-year terms that began on March 1, the new board members bring a high level of diverse expertise and insight to the management of the association as it moves forward with its vibrant growth.

“I am delighted to welcome such a strong group of new board members who bring deep industry knowledge and insights to provide strategic stewardship for our association,” said Dave Rousse, INDA President. “We look forward to working with them to advance INDA’s new value proposition to enhance our industry’s leadership position and deliver greater value to our members.”

The new board members are from global leaders Lenzing Group, Bast Fibre Technologies, Reifenhauser Reicofil, Rockline Industries, Hollingsworth & Vose Company and Principle Business Enterprises.

The new board members are:

  • Jürgen Eizinger, Senior Commercial Director, Nonwovens Business EU/AM/MEA, Lenzing Group

Eizinger has nearly 20 years of fiber industry experience. He has been with the Lenzing Group since 2001 and most recently was Vice President of the Global Nonwoven Business. He has worked at multiple locations around the world and held various commercial, engineering and technical customer services roles.

  • Jim Posa, President and General Manager, Bast Fibre Technologies, Inc.

Posa has 30-plus years of nonwovens experience and has successfully led businesses from startups to some of the largest companies in the nonwovens market. He has developed and implemented strategic business, development, operational and acquisition growth plans. His teams have worked with businesses focused on most of the major end use markets such as hygiene, wipes, filtration, medical and industrial. As a senior executive, Posa has led global businesses at Fiberweb, BP/Amoco, CEO of a Nisseki/Amoco joint venture (ANCI), Lydall, and Nitto America. A long-time INDA supporter, he has previously served on committees and as a Board member.

  • Markus Mueller – Sales Director and Board Member, Reifenhauser Reicofil

Mueller brings to the INDA Board 35 years of experience with Reifenhauser in the nonwovens and film industries. His experience has included roles as PLC Engineer, Commissioning Engineer, Project Manager and Sales Manager. Mueller has extensive knowledge of the global hygiene and medical nonwovens markets. He holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University of Cologne.

  • Matt Koele, Director of Global Materials Development, Rockline Industries

Koele is based at Rockline’s headquarters in Sheboygan, WI.  Before joining Rockline in 2012, he has held several business and Research and Development (R&D) leadership positions at SC Johnson and Kimberly-Clark Corporation. Stocking joined PBE in 2017 after a career in engineering, technology, nonprofits and government. He was named President and COO in 2018, then President and CEO in 2020, becoming the third-generation leader of the family-owned organization. He previously held roles in the private sector and within federal government offices, including the Department of Energy and Congressional Budget Office. He earned a BS in Chemical Engineering and an MS in Civil Engineering from Stanford University, and a Ph.D. in Resource Economics from the University of Maryland.

The 21-member board is comprised of elected Board Officers. One-third of the entire Board is elected each year for a three-year term by a majority vote of INDA’s general membership. Sachsens Umweltminister besuchte STFI

  • Austausch über das Netzwerkprojekt Hanfbast Sachsen (HaSaX) ´

Ende Februar besuchte Wolfram Günther, Staatsminister für Energie, Klimaschutz, Umwelt und Landwirtschaft des Freistaats Sachsen, das Sächsische Textilforschungsinstitut e.V. (STFI) in Chemnitz. Gesprächsgegenstand des Besuchs war das Forschungsvorhaben „Hanfbast aus Sachsen“ für eine nachhaltige Produktion von textilen Halbzeugen und Produkten (HaSaX)“. Das STFI erarbeitet zum gegenwärtigen Zeitpunkt ein Forschungsnetzwerk in Kooperation mit der Firma texulting GmbH, Hohenstein-Ernstthal, in dem das Potenzial von Hanfbast als biobasiertes Leichtbaumaterial betrachtet wird.

Das STFI erarbeitet zum gegenwärtigen Zeitpunkt ein Forschungsnetzwerk in Kooperation mit der Firma texulting GmbH, Hohenstein-Ernstthal, in dem das Potenzial von Hanfbast als biobasiertes Leichtbaumaterial betrachtet wird.

Das Neue ist; dieser Hanfbast wird aus ungerösteten also naturbelassenen Hanfpflanzen gewonnen und behält damit sein naturgegebenes, sehr hohes Leistungspotenzial. Das Verfahren der Gewinnung ist neu und deshalb gibt es bis zur industrieprozesstauglichen Verarbeitung der Bastfasern viele Entwicklung-schritte, welche bis zur Nutzung des Materials noch zu bewältigen sind. Zusammen mit einer Gruppe sächsischer Mittelständler sucht das STFI deshalb Unterstützung bei der sächsischen Politik zur Umsetzung der noch offenen Entwicklungsaufgaben für die Nutzbarmachung von Hanfbast.

Verfolgt wird die Vision einer vollumfänglichen Nutzung des Hanfes z. B. im Baubereich. Ziel ist es, mit hanfbasierten Sandwichelementen künftig Baustoffe anzubieten, die eine sehr gute Kreislauffähigkeit aufweisen. Hinsichtlich des CO2-Fußabdruckes können hanfbasierte Sandwichelemente mit klassischen Systemen konkurrieren. Neben den Gebäudeinnenschichten, die wegen der guten Dämmeigenschaften auch aus Hanf bestehen, kann dann auch die Gebäudehülle ein Tragelement aus Hanflaminat sein. Der Markt für leichte Gebäudehüllen wächst ständig und legt europa- und deutschlandweit momentan um jährlich 5 % zu – eine gute Perspektive für Bauwerke aus Hanf.

Der Einsatz nachhaltiger und biobasierter Materialien gewinnt in den letzten Jahren immer mehr an Bedeutung. Gründe dafür sind zum einen das steigende Bewusstsein bezüglich Umwelt- und Ressourcenschonung, Verknappung von Rohstoffen jedoch auch die zunehmende Verschärfung der gesetzlichen Vorgaben.

Composites, die aus mineralischen und/oder erdölbasierten Rohstoffen bestehen, weisen von der Erzeugung bis zum Recycling einen erheblichen CO2-Footprint auf. Um die CO2-Emission zu reduzieren, ist der Einsatz biobasierter Hochleistungsfasern anstelle der Glas- oder Kunststofffasern ein Lösungsansatz. Das mechanische Leistungspotenzial von Hanfbast ist vergleichbar mit dem von Glasfasern und wurde unter Nutzung einer neuen Bastfaser-Gewinnungsmethode erstmals 2015 nachgewiesen. So besitzen die aus derart isoliertem Hanfbast hergestellten Composites um bis zu 40 % höhere mechanische Kennwerte als jene Bauteile, bei denen ausschließlich konventionell aufgeschlossene Naturfasern eingesetzt werden.

BTE: Überbrückungshilfe deckt nur 16 Prozent der Umsatzausfälle im Outfithandel

Nach Aussagen des Bundeswirtschaftsministeriums gegenüber der Fachzeitschrift „TextilWirtschaft“ hat der stationäre Textil-, Schuh- und Lederwarenhandel bislang rund 2,42 Mrd. Euro an Corona-Hilfen (ohne Kurzarbeitergeld) erhalten, der weitaus überwiegende Teil davon im Rahmen der sog. Überbrückungshilfe III. „Auf den ersten Blick ist das viel, deckt aber tatsächlich nur einen Bruchteil der entstandenen Verluste“, berichtet BTE-Hauptgeschäftsführer Rolf Pangels.
 
So hat der gesamte stationäre Outfithandel nach Berechnungen des BTE als Folge der verordneten Geschäftsschließungen und weiterer Beschränkungen (z.B. 2G) seit März 2020 insgesamt rund 15 Mrd. Euro an Umsatz verloren. Die staatlichen Unterstützungszahlen kompensieren also nur 16 Prozent der Umsatzausfälle, 84 Prozent der Verluste tragen die Unternehmen. Pangels: „Eine von einzelnen Politikern und Wirtschaftswissenschaftlern vermutete Überkompensation der entstandenen Schäden ist daher absolut haltlos!“

Ganz im Gegenteil würden die staatlichen Hilfen für den stationären Modehandel bei weitem nicht ausreichend sein. Die konkrete Ausgestaltung der Überbrückungshilfen habe dazu geführt, dass viele Kosten nicht angesetzt werden konnten. „Es ist daher kein Wunder, dass nach einer BTE-Erhebung im letzten Jahr rund die Hälfte aller Mode-, Schuh- und Lederwarenhändler in den roten Zahlen gelandet sind“, weiß Pangels. „Tausende stationäre Unternehmen haben nur überlebt, weil die Inhaber ihre Rücklagen und Altersversorgungen aufgelöst haben.“
 
Die verordneten Verkaufsbeschränkungen mit den nachfolgenden Umsatzverlusten könnten von der Politik auch keinesfalls als normales unternehmerisches Risiko bewertet werden. Schließlich gebe es auch zwei Jahre nach Beginn der Pandemie keinerlei Belege, dass es im Nonfood-Handel ein erhöhtes Infektionsrisiko gegeben hat. Die Schließung von Textil-, Schuh- und Lederwarengeschäften sei also epidemiologisch sinnlos und im Vergleich z.B. zu den - trotz immer wieder bekannt gewordenen Corona-Ausbrüchen - weiterhin geöffneten Industriebetrieben absolut willkürlich gewesen. „Es ist daher nur fair und gerecht, den betroffenen Händlern ihre Verluste in angemessenem Maße zu ersetzen und sie nicht mit Almosen abzuspeisen“, fordert Pangels. So müsse z.B. unbedingt die 30-Prozent-Grenze für die Beantragung von Überbrückungshilfen gesenkt werden. „Wie würden wohl die verantwortlichen Politiker reagieren, wenn sie mit einer haltlosen Begründung zwei Jahre unbezahlt blieben und von ihrem Ersparten leben müssten?“, fragt Pangels.

Masterabsolventin der Hochschule Niederrhein erhält Bundespreis für ecodesign

Es begann damit, dass Magdalena Keller den alten Pelzmantel ihrer Großmutter geerbt hat, aber nichts damit anzufangen wusste. Aus diesem Problem entstand dann ihre Masterarbeit „Ein Pelzmantel und seine Folgen“, für die die Masterabsolventin am Fachbereich Textil- und Bekleidungstechnik der Hochschule Niederrhein mit dem Bundespreis für Ecodesign „eco“ in der Kategorie Nachwuchs ausgezeichnet wurde.

„Da war also dieser Pelzmantel von meiner Oma, den ich aus ethischen Gründen nicht tragen wollte, aber ihn auch aus ökologischen und emotionalen Gründen nicht wegwerfen wollte“, sagt Magdalena Keller. Daraus entstand die Idee für ihre Masterarbeit, für die sie die Verwertung von Pelzmänteln und Fellabfällen aus invasiver Jagd untersuchte.

Im ersten Arbeitsschritt rasierte sie Haare von der Lederbasis des Pelzmantels und entwickelte daraus ein Garn. Mit diesem Garn hat sie textile Flächen gestrickt und gewebt, die die Basis für den Großteil der Kleidungsstücke ihrer Kollektion bildeten. Auch aus der Lederbasis sind einige Stücke entstanden, um möglichst wenig Abfälle in der Produktion zu haben.

Es begann damit, dass Magdalena Keller den alten Pelzmantel ihrer Großmutter geerbt hat, aber nichts damit anzufangen wusste. Aus diesem Problem entstand dann ihre Masterarbeit „Ein Pelzmantel und seine Folgen“, für die die Masterabsolventin am Fachbereich Textil- und Bekleidungstechnik der Hochschule Niederrhein mit dem Bundespreis für Ecodesign „eco“ in der Kategorie Nachwuchs ausgezeichnet wurde.

„Da war also dieser Pelzmantel von meiner Oma, den ich aus ethischen Gründen nicht tragen wollte, aber ihn auch aus ökologischen und emotionalen Gründen nicht wegwerfen wollte“, sagt Magdalena Keller. Für ihre Kollektion erhielt sie die höchste staatliche Auszeichnung im Bereich ökologisches Design in Deutschland. „Es ist eine große Ehre für mich, diesen Preis gewonnen zu haben. Außerdem war es sehr spannend für mich, die vielen anderen Designer:innen und ihre Arbeiten kennenzulernen und mich mit ihnen über Zukunftsvisionen auszutauschen“, freut sich die Masterabsolventin, die von Prof. Dr. Thomas Weide bei ihrer Arbeit betreut wurde.

Auch die Jury des Preises war begeistert von ihrer Arbeit. Das Jurymitglied Prof. Friederike von Wedel-Parlow war voller Lob: „Eine herausragend gestaltete Kollektion, der man den Ursprung des Materials nicht mehr ansieht. Die alten Pelze und Jagdfelle werden zu neuen Garnen, aus denen dann ästhetisch gestaltete Mäntel, Sakkos und Anzüge werden.“

Der Bundespreis für ecodesign wird jährlich vergeben. Die Preisträger:innen erhalten jeweils eine personalisierte Urkunde, eine Trophäe sowie einen Geldpreis in Höhe von 1000 Euro. Interessierte können sich noch bis zum 18. April um den Preis bewerben.

INDA Appoints Jen Greenamoyer as New Director of Government Affairs

  • Experienced government affairs professional with EPA background to advocate for the nonwovens association in public policy forums

INDA, The Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry, has named experienced policy advocate Jennifer “Jen” Greenamoyer as its new Director of Government Affairs to raise the association’s profile in Washington, D.C. She brings 25 years of experience at associations, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and on Capitol Hill.  

Most recently, she was senior government relations liaison and the principal lobbyist at the American Institute of Physics (AIP) for 15 years, where she represented the association to Congress and lobbied for appropriations. Greenamoyer has strong expertise in science policy and education that will enhance her role as an information resource for INDA members, staff, and others on government affairs’ matters affecting the industry.

She began her career working at the EPA in the Office of Water and then the Office of Policy. Greenamoyer also trained EPA staff on regulation development and worked on small business regulatory relief. On Capitol Hill, Greenamoyer worked as professional staff for the House Committee on Small Business where she specialized in regulations about environmental and labor issues.

As Director of External Affairs for the Sea Grant Association, she secured annual appropriations, monitored legislative developments, and represented the association to federal agencies and the Administration on issues of interest, funding opportunities and joint programs.

At INDA, she will serve as the liaison between the industry and government legislative and regulatory bodies by preparing formal submissions to the federal government articulating industry positions, and representing INDA on the Industry Trade Advisory Committee for Textiles and Apparel (ITAC 13) among other responsibilities in this key position.

New Deputy Assistant Secretary for Textiles, Consumer Goods and Materials at the U.S. Department of Commerce
