European business associations celebrate the signature of EU-Mercosur FTA

January, 17 marks a historic milestone with the signing of the EU-Mercosur Trade Agreement, creating the biggest trading block in the world. European business – represented by more than 28 associations across a wide range of sectors – warmly welcomes this signature. It sends a strong and timely signal that the EU remains open and is committed to rules-based global trade. In a time of global uncertainty, this agreement is a key growth booster. 

By opening access to over 270 million consumers via the elimination of trade barriers and the removal of tariffs on over 90% of EU exports, the agreement provides the thrust European companies need to export, invest, and grow, as well as to diversify their supply chains, sourcing essential products and raw materials from Mercosur. By 2040, according to DG Trade’s calculations, the agreement is expected to add 77.6 billion euros to the EU GDP, resulting in a 39% increase in EU exports to Mercosur.

After over 25 years of negotiations, we are finally in sight of the finish line. We cannot afford to wait any longer.

The Netherlands will host one of Europe’s leading international fashion, textile, and ready-to-wear trade fairs. The 4th Amsterdam Textile Show (ATS) will bring together manufacturers, suppliers, designers, and buyers from more than 14 countries across Europe and other regions of the world, offering a unique platform for international business opportunities and innovation.

Organized by Exponew Fuarcilik, the fair will be held at the World Fashion Centre in Amsterdam. The International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) will hold its 83rd Plenary Meeting on 23–24 March 2026 at the Parliament building in Bremen. The meeting will take place immediately ahead of the 38th International Cotton Conference Bremen (25–27 March 2026) and marks a historic premiere: for the first time, the ICAC Plenary will be hosted in close cooperation with the Bremen Cotton Ex-change and the Faserinstitut Bremen e.V. (FIBRE). 

The ICAC is a government-level association headquartered in Washington, DC. Its member countries produce, process, or trade cotton. The ICAC Plenary Meeting will be held under the motto “Uniting the Cotton and Textiles Value Chain for a Sustainable Future” and highlights the organization’s commitment to supporting its member gov-ernments and advancing sustainability, innovation, and economic prosperity across the entire cotton and textile value chain—from seed to retail.

New Managing Director at Monforts

Effective from January 1, 2026, Volker Gingter, has been appointed the new Managing Director of A. Monforts Textilmaschinen GmbH & Co. KG, headquartered in Mönchengladbach, Germany, and will steer the fortunes of the leading dyeing and finishing technology company going forward.

Gunnar Meyer stepped down as Managing Director on December 31, 2025, and will remain with the company in an advisory capacity until his well-earned retirement in July 2026.

Mr Gingter started his career as an electrician in 1997 at Sucker-Müller-Hacoba, also headquartered in Mönchengladbach, and first joined Monforts in 2000 as an inhouse commissioning engineer. Between 2010 and 2013 he worked at Esprit on a new European warehouse before rejoining Monforts as Engineering Service Manager. He became Head of the Service Department in 2020 and in 2025 also took charge of the Spare Parts Department.

He is now looking forward to meeting the worldwide Monforts network of customers and suppliers personally at the forthcoming Techtextil 2026 exhibition in Frankfurt.

SGL Carbon signs long-term supply agreement with X-energy

X-energy Reactor Company, LLC (“X-energy”) and SGL Carbon LLC (“SGL”) have signed a 10-year framework agreement to provide graphite for the deployment of X-energy’s Xe-100 small modular reactor (“SMR”).

Capacity Reservation for Cascade Advanced Energy Facility (Energy Northwest, Washington State)
X-energy and SGL have also signed an agreement to reserve capacity and develop production readiness for the Cascade Advanced Energy Facility with Energy Northwest in Washington state. Cascade is a planned 12-unit Xe-100 plant, and the first of several proposed Amazon and X-energy projects targeting at least five gigawatts of new nuclear energy by 2039.Graphite production is expected to begin in the second half of 2026.

SGL has a long history in supplying graphite into nuclear applications. The product and service portfolio covers graphite components for the reactor core but also material for nuclear fuel production. X-energy and SGL Carbon are long-standing partners, with collaboration dating back to 2015 to advance the development and qualification of graphite for commercial use in the Xe-100. To explore further opportunities for collaboration on future X-energy projects, Andreas Klein, CEO of SGL Carbon, met with J. Clay Sell the CEO of X-energy this week at their Maryland headquarters.

Sustainable Athletic Wear Made from Bio-Based Polyethylene

Conventional sports textiles made from petroleum-based synthetic fibres are to be replaced in the future by sustainable, bio-based, cooling textiles. Polyethylene, previously used mainly in the packaging industry, is thus qualified for use in textiles and, as a bio-based drop-in solution, offers a cost-effective, sustainable alternative for the future.

TECNARO (Ilsfeld/Germany), BB Engineering (Remscheid/Germany), FALKE (Schmallenberg/Germany) and the Institut für Textiltechnik (ITA) of RWTH Aachen University have developed textiles from bio-based polyethylene (bioPE) in the bioPEtex project of the BIOTEXFUTURE Innovation Space.

TECNARO develops the bio-based PE compounds and handles their dyeing. ITA is concentrating on the process development for melt spinning (partially-oriented yarn, POY) and false-twist texturing (draw-textured yarn, DTY) of the bioPE yarns. BB Engineering implements the false-twist texturing on an industrial scale, and FALKE is developing the final T-shirt, which will be treated with a bio-based finish for improved elasticity.

However, additional development, characterisation, and optimisation steps are necessary to make a market introduction possible.

Naia™ Renew-based fill solutions expand for comforters 
Naia™ fill solutions are now offered in two forms: insulation and loose fill. In insulation, the offering includes options blended with recycled polyester and, as new additions, wool and recycled polyester, alongside a new 100% Naia™ Renew silky touch solution. In loose fill, the new options include fiber ball formats blended with recycled polyester or with wool and recycled polyester, as well as a down blend option. The expanded fill offering is designed to deliver breathable comfort, softness, effective moisture and odor management, and ease of care. Thanks to versatile blending possibilities, these solutions support all-season and cross-seasonal comfort, helping maintain a balanced sleep microclimate across different conditions and preferences.

Sleepwear debuts at Heimtextil
For the first time at Heimtextil, Eastman showcases sleepwear and loungewear made with Naia™ Renew staple fiber, confirming sleepwear as a strong application within the All-Night Comfort platform. Known for its next-to-skin softness, breathability and moisture comfort, Naia™ staple fiber is particularly well suited to garments designed for rest and relaxation.
This debut extends the concept of sleep comfort beyond bedding, reinforcing the connection between what surrounds the body and what touches the skin throughout the night.
