Doktorandin des ITFT erhält den Manfred Hirschvogel Preis

Dr.-Ing. Larissa Born, wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Institut für Textil- und Fasertechnologien (ITFT), wurde am 02. Juli 2021 im Rahmen der Abschlussfeier der Masterabsolvent:innen der Maschinenbau-Fakultäten an der Universität Stuttgart mit dem Manfred Hirschvogel Preis 2021 ausgezeichnet. Der mit 5.000 Euro dotierte Preis wird jährlich an allen TU9-Universitäten für die beste Dissertation aus dem Bereich Maschinenbau verliehen. Die prämierte Doktorarbeit trägt den Titel „Grundlagen für die Auslegung und Gestaltung eines Hybridmaterials für außen liegende, adaptive Fassadenbauteile aus Faserverbundkunststoff“. Dr.-Ing. Marc Hirschvogel, Kuratoriumsvorsitzender der Frank Hirschvogel Stiftung, lobte bei der Preisverleihung insbesondere den innovativen Ansatz und die wissenschaftliche Tiefe der Arbeit.

Marc Hirschvogel, Kuratoriumsvorsitzender der Frank Hirschvogel Stiftung, lobte bei der Preisverleihung insbesondere den innovativen Ansatz und die wissenschaftliche Tiefe der Arbeit.

Mit ihrer Doktorarbeit stellt Larissa Born eine grundlegende Methodik zur Entwicklung adaptiver Faserverbundkunststoffe zur Verfügung und wandte diese beispielhaft auf ein Hybridmaterial aus glasfaserverstärktem Kunststoff, Elastomer und thermoplastischem Polyurethan an. Zwischen steifen Bauteilbereichen werden lokal nachgiebige Bereiche (Gelenke) durch Anpassung des Materialaufbaus integriert. Um die adaptiven Material-eigenschaften analysieren zu können, entwickelte sie darüber hinaus ein neues Prüf-verfahren, das die Biegung eines Prüfkörpers um bis zu 180° ermöglicht. Das neuartige Hybridmaterial lässt eine Dauerbelastung von 5.000 Biegezyklen um 180° mit lediglich marginalem Festigkeitsverlust zu. Ergebnis der durchgeführten Analysen ist eine Datenbasis inklusive Regressionsmodell auf deren Grundlage sich die mechanischen Eigenschaften eines Gelenk-Bauteils einstellen lassen.

Das Hybridmaterial hat bereits in verschiedenen Demonstratoren Anwendung gefunden, die mit dem AVK Innovation Award (Flectofold) und dem Materialica Gold Award (Flexafold) ausgezeichnet wurden. „Mit ihrer Arbeit ist es Larissa Born gelungen, eine völlig neue, materialtechnische Grundlage für die Entwicklung adaptiver Faserverbundkunststoffe zu schaffen.“, lobte Prof. Dr.-Ing. Götz T. Gresser, Doktorvater und Institutsleiter des ITFT, die Arbeit anlässlich der Preisverleihung. „Die Anwendung ist nicht beschränkt auf den architek-tonischen Kontext, sondern kann ebenso auf andere Bereiche wie beispielsweise Automobil und Luftfahrt übertragen werden. So können mechanische, wartungsintensive Gelenke durch verschleißarme, nachgiebige Mechanismen ersetzt werden.“

Nach der abgeschlossenen Promotion wird Larissa Born als stellvertretende Institutsleiterin des ITFT ihre Forschungsarbeiten am Institut fortsetzen. Gemeinsam mit Prof. Gresser gilt es, das bisherige Forschungsfeld zu vertiefen und neue Forschungsthemen im Bereich Faserverbund zu eröffnen.

Pulcra Chemicals achieves first Acquisition with Devan

Pulcra Chemicals, with headquarters in Geretsried (Germany) has announced its first acquisition in its history by acquiring fellow-industry player Devan.

Devan, with origins since 1977 and Belgian headquarters, is since 2013 owned by Pentahold (a Belgian private equity fund). Devan is known from its antimicrobial range BI-OME, its large sustainable track record with a.o. probiotics solutions, a wide range of recently introduced bio-based textile finishes and a long standing in Thermoregulation and Flame Retardants. Devan has offices in the UK, Portugal, the US and a team in Shanghai.

The acquisition price will not be disclosed.

Marabu to be climate neutral from July 2021

Marabu is one of the first ink manufacturers to achieve climate neutrality. All Marabu Business Units will, where possible, make a specific contribution to achieve the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with PROJECT GREEN and therefore participate in the Green Deal.

"We are safeguarding the future of the next generations and are proud that we have managed to be a climate neutral company from July 2021 with the Tamm and Bietigheim sites. All our products, whether printing inks or creative colours, are climate neutral, too," explains York Boeder, CEO Executive Committee. "Our so-called PROJECT GREEN combines all measures that are taking us on our journey to climate neutrality. Climate protection is a particular concern for us, to which we have made a binding commitment within the scope of an extensive sustainability strategy. In accordance with our Marabu Green Deal, we avoid and reduce emissions wherever possible, e. g. by using green electricity, energy-saving schemes, mobility concepts or environmentally friendly materials. We offset all unavoidable CO2 emissions by supporting internationally certified climate protection projects. We are continually implementing measures to improve our carbon footprint and update them annually to make their success measurable. We have therefore set ourselves the active goal of reducing our CO2 emissions by another 25 % by 2030."

For decades, Marabu has invested in the research and development of safe production processes, environmentally friendly products, and clean technologies with the aim of preserving the natural environment. Marabu has worked with Climate Partner to analyse all the CO2 emissions from the sites in Tamm and Bietigheim and determine its carbon footprint. Including all product-related factors such as raw materials and logistics, Marabu currently generates approx. 18,500 tons of unavoidable CO2 emissions. This value is the positive result of a number of climate-friendly measures pursued by Marabu, such as the early switch to green electricity in 2007.

Marabu's main activities to avoid and reduce CO2 emissions:

  • Energy - Switching to green electricity from hydropower
  • Mobility - Migration of the company's vehicles to electric and hybrid cars as well as in e-charging stations
  • Production - Use of renewable energies and resource-efficient production processes
  • Raw materials - Replacing critical substances with environmentally friendly alternatives for new and existing products
  • Transporting - Climate-neutral freight carriers and lower-emission transport methods like shipping or road transport replace air freight wherever possible

SCP concept leaves no waste behind
The SCP concept developed by Renasci is a proprietary method of maximising material recovery in order to achieve zero waste. It is unique because it enables the processing of multiple waste streams using different recycling technologies – all under one roof. At the newly-built Renasci SCP facility in Oostende, Belgium, mixed waste – plastics, metals, and biomass – is automatically selected and sorted multiple times.

After sorting, plastic waste is first mechanically recycled, and then in a second step any remaining material is chemically recycled into circular pyrolysis oil and lighter product fractions, which are used to fuel the process.

Other types of sorted waste such as metals and organic refuse are further processed using other technologies. In the end, only 5% of the original waste remains, and even this residual material is not landfilled, but used as filler in construction materials. Because of this extremely efficient way of processing, the overall CO2 footprint of these waste streams is greatly reduced – yet another advantage of the circular SCP concept.

The cascade model is Borealis’ integrated circular approach
Borealis circular cascade model sits at the heart of its ambition to achieve a truly circular economy, by combining carefully chosen technologies in a complementary and cascading way to achieve full circularity. In this way, Borealis aims to give plastic products multiple lifetimes in the most sustainable way possible. Starting with optimising product design, first for eco-efficiency, then for re-use and finally for recycling. Once a product has reached its end of life, we must close the plastics loop: first with mechanical recycling to make products with the highest possible value, quality and lowest carbon footprint; then utilising chemical recycling, as a complement to mechanical recycling, to further valorise residual streams which would otherwise go to incineration, or even worse to landfills. The valorised material from mechanical and chemical recycling is then processed with Borealis Borcycle™ recycling technology consisting of Borcycle M for mechanical recycling and Borcycle C for chemical recycling, providing high quality solutions for more sophisticated applications, such as food packaging and healthcare.

The SCP concept is aligned to Borealis’ ambition to close the loop on plastic waste as encapsulated in its circular cascade model.

Overall prize of the “IQ Innovationspreis Mitteldeutschland“ for FibreCoat GmbH and DBF Deutsche Basalt Faser GmbH

FibreCoat GmbH from Aachen, Germany, together with DBF Deutsche Basalt GmbH, developed a completely new type of fibre material to shield electromagnetic radiation from digital end devices, medical technology or e-car batteries cheaply and effectively. The joint project was awarded the overall prize of the“ IQ Innovationspreises Mitteldeutschland“ on 24 June in an online event broadcast live from Leipzig.

The prize is endowed with €15,000 and was sponsored by the Halle-Dessau, Leipzig and East Thuringia Chambers of Industry and Commerce.

FibreCoat GmbH from Aachen, Germany, together with DBF Deutsche Basalt GmbH, developed a completely new type of fibre material to shield electromagnetic radiation from digital end devices, medical technology or e-car batteries cheaply and effectively. Electromagnetic radiation from smartphones, hospital diagnostics and electric car batteries must be shielded so that they do not inter-fere with each other. To prevent mutual interference, they have so far been covered with metal fibre fabrics, a very time- and energy-consuming and thus expensive procedure. The new material from Basalt Faser GmbH and FibreCoat GmbH prevents this with a fibre core made of melted, thinly drawn basalt, which is coated with aluminium and bundled into the so-called AluCoat yarn. This yarn remains just as conductive and shielding, but is lighter, stronger, cheaper and more sustainable than previous alternatives. In addition, there are further advantages:

  • The number of process steps required is reduced from ten to one.
  • 1,500 metres of yarn are produced per minute instead of the previous five metres.
  • The energy required is only 10 per cent of the previous amount.

The result is a price that is twenty times lower.

The textile made of AluCoat fibres is versatile and flexible: as wallpaper it can shield 5G radiation in offices or medical rooms or encase batteries and thus ensure the smooth functioning of electric cars. AluCoat is already being used in some companies. A European fibre centre in Sangerhausen is being planned for mass production.

The two innovative companies DBF Deutsche Basalt GmbH and FibreCoat GmbH from East and West combine the two materials basalt and aluminium to protect against electromagnetic radiation. In doing so, they coat basalt with aluminium and, through this novel combination, create an inexpensive, sustainable and quickly produced alter-native for a market worth billions.

FibreCoat GmbH from Aachen is a spin-off of the Institut für Textiltechnik (ITA) of RWTH Aachen University; the managing directors Dr Robert Brüll and Alexander Lüking and Richard Haas have completed their doctorates at the ITA or are in the process of preparing their doctorates. Georgi Gogoladze, Managing Director of Deutsche Basaltfaser GmbH, also studied at RWTH Aachen University. The two managing directors Brüll and Gogoladze know each other from their student days.

Joint Business Statement on EU-MERCOSUR Association Agreement

The EU-MERCOSUR agreement is the largest and most ambitious trade agreement ever negotiated by both sides, provides regulatory certainty for both trade in goods and services, and establishes better trade links between countries of respectively 440 and 260 million citizens. It also includes the most advanced sustainable development provisions that will foster partnership, help mitigate climate change and bind both sides to effectively implement the Paris Agreement. Moreover, it includes enforceable commitments on workers' rights and environmental protection through a dedicated dispute settlement mechanism.

In particular, more and more retailers reported using RFID to streamline the audit process (as an alternative to infrequent organisational stock takes), which not only delivers considerable cost savings, but also provides more regular insights into the status of inventories. It also found that using RFID was having a significant impact on store processes. While RFID has always been key to inventory accuracy, some companies are now using this data to further improve business activities such as reducing phantom out of stocks, improving rapid stock search and find tasks and developing an efficient ship from store (SFS) capability.

Beyond the more traditional retail model, RFID was seen as a key facilitator in delivering omnichannel retailing by all those questioned. Without the inventory accuracy offered by RFID, few retailers believed they could reliably use their stores as fulfilment centres to output online orders. Indeed, one retailer admitted to only making RFID-enabled store stock available for this purpose. The use of RFID to improve online order accuracy is also becoming more commonplace, to reduce errors in the picking and packing process, therefore improving customer satisfaction. One retailer reported a 90% reduction in incorrect orders and customer complaints since introducing RFID into the process.

Looking to the future, one area where the benefits of RFID are starting to be tested is self-checkouts (SCO). While currently limited due to the need to have a 100% SKU tagging strategy in place, retailers are starting to recognize the benefits the technology could offer including increased speed of checkout, reduced likelihood of double scanning and thereby improved customer service. Another area where retailers also reported reaping the benefits of RFID was loss prevention. While none of those interviewed argued that reducing loss was the primary reason for investing in RFID, many acknowledged they were benefiting from it by using the technology to tackle refund frauds, enable dynamic loss product profiling, manage e-frauds and identify stolen products.

Lectra announces the signature of an agreement to acquire the entire capital and voting rights of the French company Neteven.

Demnach geht es für Sportschuhe bis zum Jahr 2028 konsequent aufwärts. Schon im Corona-Jahr 2020 profitierten „Outdoor“ und „Running“ davon, dass Bewegung an der frischen Luft in Lockdown- und Home-Office-Zeiten zu den wenigen erlaubten Ausgleichsaktivitäten zählten. So legte das Running-Segment 2020 gegenüber 2019 um 2,3 Prozent zu, während der Sportartikelmarkt insgesamt um rund 4,5 Prozent nachgab. Und das Running-Wachstum wird sich fortsetzen, das zeigt der neue „Branchen-REPORT Sport 2021“. Demnach wird Running bis zum Jahr 2028 einen Umsatz von 718 Millionen Euro erreichen können. Mimaki held their global event Innovation Days (2-4 June 2021) to great success. The event brought together printers, journalists and experts from Mimaki Japan, USA and Europe, to nurture innovation in the sign graphics, industrial, textile and 3D markets and drive success within the industry. The global event also introduced the market to Mimaki’s recent product releases, the JFX550, JFX600 and SUJV-160.

In a week of webinars, workshops, demonstrations, and networking events, over 1,300 attendees from all across the world logged in to participate, with the demonstration of UJV100 and JV100 printers, 3D printing workshop and car wrap workshop being the most popular events. As a first of its kind for Mimaki, visitors were able to speak with regional Mimaki representatives, gaining greater insight into the global printing industry as it recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Successful internationalization

The Global Player Award recognizes businesses that have established an efficient network outside of Austria and are actually considered to be pioneers in exporting goods or services within a particular country or sector.

Gelflex-EB® CI flexo inks and Energy Sciences Inc.’s (ESI) EZCure® Electron Beam (EB) are now able to meet customers’ demands on PCMC’s Fusion C, which is part of a series of flexographic printers that significantly reduce energy requirements by utilizing low-power consumption components, designs and operations.

Gelflex-EB® ink technology offers printers a cost-effective path to gain high-resolution print quality that removes more than 90 percent of solvents. It is safe for food packaging and can be used in both traditional reverse-print laminations or as a surface-print ink on multi-layer monomaterial recyclable structures.
