Hohenstein expands testing portfolio beyond textiles

  • Acquisition of QAT Services Limited laboratory in Hong Kong

On 01.03.2023 Hohenstein takes over the DAkkS accredited QAT Services Limited laboratory.  With this acquisition, the internationally recognized testing service provider is integrating the hardgoods knowledge of QATS employees into the Hohenstein portfolio.  As a result, Hohenstein will provide full-service capabilities for Greater China and beyond.

Riri joins Oerlikon Group - Acquisition Completed

Oerlikon has successfully closed the acquisition of Riri, following the signing of the agreement announced on December 16, 2022.

Riri is a provider of coated metal accessories for the luxury fashion industry. This deal is the strategic next step to complement Oerlikon’s acquisition of Coeurdor in 2021. It expands Oerlikon’s foothold in the luxury market and together creates a leading platform in luxury metalware. As the demand for PVD coatings grows, Oerlikon’s PVD technologies that provide environmentally friendly solutions will accelerate the shift of the luxury goods industry to greener PVD technology.

Renato Usoni, CEO of Riri, will lead the newly formed luxury business unit of Oerlikon as President Oerlikon Luxury. Riri will operate as a separate business within the Surface Solutions division. Its zippers and buttons will continue to use the Riri and Cobrax brands on individual products. Oerlikon will consolidate Riri as of March 1, 2023.

Unter der Federführung des Gesamtverbandes textil+mode werden gemeinsam mit den Partnern Deutsche Institute für Textil- und Faserforschung Denkendorf (DITF), Institut für Textiltechnik der RWTH Aachen University (ITA), Sächsisches Textilforschungsinstitut (STFI) und DER MITTELSTANDSVERBUND – ZGV kleine und mittlere Unternehmen bei der Einführung zukunftsrelevanter digitaler Technologien begleitet. Themen sind u.a. hohe Energie- und Rohstoffkosten, neue gesetzliche Regelungen in den Bereichen Lieferketten und Kreislaufwirtschaft, Arbeiten auf digitalen Plattformen und eine bedarfsgerechte Qualifikation der Belegschaft

Geschäftsführerin Anja Merker sieht das Thema Digitalisierung in den Unternehmen angekommen. „Künstliche Intelligenz, Robotik oder Blockchain sind keine Fremdwörter mehr. Geplant ist darüber hinaus ein standortübergreifender Demonstrator, der beispielhaft einen transparenten Nachweis entlang der Lieferkette von der Faser bis zum Endkunden ermöglicht sowie ein Quick-Check-Tool, mit dem Mittelständler dabei unterstützt werden sollen, ihre Risiken in der Lieferkette schnell einzuschätzen und einen ersten Überblick über ihren ökologischen Fußabdruck zu gewinnen.

Archroma completes acquisition of Huntsman Textile Effects

Archroma announced the closing of the acquisition of the Textile Effects business from Huntsman Corporation (“Huntsman Textile Effects”).

When the Huntsman Textile Effects acquisition was first announced in August 2022, Archroma Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Heike van de Kerkhof called the transaction a “merger of equals”. Indeed, the global business of Huntsman Textile Effects comprises approximately 2,300 employees in 33 countries and 10 production sites globally which, when combined with Archroma, means the company will have more than 5,000 employees in total, in 42 countries and 35 production sites.

In addition to the closing of the Textile Effects acquisition, Archroma announced that it has updated its overall business into two operating divisions for growth, each focused on a separate end market.

The new division will be led by Rohit Aggarwal, former President of Huntsman Textile Effects, who is appointed as Divisional President & CEO of the Archroma Textile Effects division, as well as President Asia.

The Packaging & Paper Specialties and Coatings, Adhesives & Sealants businesses of Archroma have been recently combined into one new division named Archroma Paper, Packaging & Coatings, under the leadership of Sameer Singla, Divisional President & CEO of the Archroma Paper, Packaging & Coatings division, as well as President Americas and Europe, Middle East & Africa.

This new structure will ensure that both divisions obtain the resources and focus needed to continue providing Archroma’s customers and business partners with the superior experience and solutions they have come to expect.

In particular, Archroma is committed to supporting global megatrends and societal shifts such as circular fashion, plastic-to-paper replacement, and water-based paints and coatings, with the innovations and solutions needed to do so.

Kelheim Fibres and SUMO are presenting their high-performance absorbent pads for the reusable Sumo diaper at this year's Cellulose Fibres Conference. The Sumo diaper is a sustainable and washable cloth diaper made entirely from biobased materials, offering high performance and innovative design.

The Sumo diaper offers a reusable alternative, consisting of a waterproof shell and absorbent pads. To enhance the performance of the pads, Sumo collaborated with Kelheim Fibres, a leading viscose specialty fibre manufacturer with decades of experience in the hygiene sector.

Together with the Saxon Textile Research Institute STFI, Sumo and Kelheim Fibres have developed a high-performance absorbent pad that is free of fossil-based materials and has already been awarded the Techtextil Innovation Award. The basis for the innovative construction are Kelheim's functionalized specialty viscose fibres with modified cross-sections, which ensure particularly high absorbency and extremely low rewet values.

To ensure the washability of the product, needle-punched/thermally bonded nonwovens were chosen, consisting of a mixture of specialty viscose and PLA bicomponent fibres. By combining nonwovens, typically used in single-use applications, with reusable products, the partners have chosen a new approach.

Natalie Wunder, project manager at Kelheim Fibres, and Luisa Kahlfeldt, founder and designer of SUMO, explain in their joint presentation at the Cellulose Fibre Conference how open innovation has led to successful development collaboration, how this response to current consumer needs has emerged, and what steps are planned for the future.

Dibella: Systematisierung von Alttextil-Sortierung

Dibella engagiert sich seit Jahren in verschiedenen Projekten für das Recycling von Objekttextilien. Beim jüngsten Projekt, das die Möglichkeiten einer Faser-Kreislaufführung auslotete, erwies sich die Identifizierung der Alttextilien als größte Barriere. Das Unternehmen will diese Hürde nun nehmen: Im Rahmen des von der Deutschen Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU) geförderten Projekts „KICKup“ (KI-gestützte, chemische Cellulose-Kreisläufe) soll die Sortierung von Geweben aus Baumwolle und Polyester automatisiert und damit die Grundlage für ein reibungsloses Faserrecycling geschaffen werden.

In Textilservice-Unternehmen werden große Mengen gleichartiger Bett-, Tisch- und Frottierwäsche eingesetzt, die nach Ablauf der Nutzungsphase als Alttextilien anfallen. Diese bieten aufgrund der hohen Volumina, der einheitlichen Zusammensetzung und einer begrenzten Zahl von Sammelstellen optimale Voraussetzungen für ein zukunftsfähiges Faser-zu-Faser-Recyclingsystem. In der Praxis scheitert ein solches Konzept jedoch an einer mangelnden Unterscheidbarkeit der Materialien. Zu diesem Ergebnis kam ein Pilotprojekt1, an dem Dibella beteiligt war.

Effektive Sortierung von Alttextilien verbessert die Zirkularität
„Im textilen Mietservice werden Gewebe in unterschiedlichen Baumwoll-Polyester-Mischungen, aus reiner Baumwolle und sogar aus 100% Polyester verwendet. Für jedes dieser Materialien gibt es spezielle Recycling-Technologien. Die Zuordnung zum geeigneten Prozess hängt allerdings wesentlich von der Sortierung der Ware ab: Je besser die Qualitäten unterschieden werden, desto größer sind die Effekte für die Kreislaufführung. Bisher fehlt jedoch ein geeignetes, automatisiertes Sortiersystem für eine qualitative Erfassung gängiger Objekttextilien. Dazu haben wir gemeinsam mit ausgesuchten Partnern das Projekt Aufbau KI-gestützter geschlossener Kreisläufe für B2B-Textilien aus Baumwoll-Polyester-Mischungen auf der Basis chemischen Upcyclings ins Leben gerufen. Dank einer Förderung der DBU können wir dieses in den kommenden zwei Jahren entwickeln“, fasst Ralf Hellmann, Geschäftsführer von Dibella zusammen.

Hohe Transparenz mit moderner Technik
Das Projekt ist Teil einer aktuellen DBU-Förderinitiative für textile Kreisläufe, die zu ressourcenschonenden Produkt-, Material- und Stoffkreisläufen beiträgt. Das Hauptziel des von der Deutschen Bundesstiftung Umwelt fachlich und finanziell mit 397.266 Euro geförderten Vorhabens ist die Entwicklung eine Anlage, die mittels Infrarot-Technologie und künstlicher Intelligenz eine möglichst sortenreine Sortierung der aus dem Mietservice stammenden Warenströme vornehmen kann. Die Projektpartner fokussieren sich dabei im Wesentlichen auf reine Baumwolltextilien sowie auf Mischgewebe aus Polyester und Baumwolle bzw. Regeneratfasern. Sie sollen zukünftig mit hoher Genauigkeit identifiziert und dem ihnen zugeordneten chemischen oder mechanischen Recycling-Prozess zugeführt werden können.

Zukunftsweisendes Projekt
„Je sortenreiner Materialien zurückgewonnen werden, desto besser lassen sie sich wiederverwerten. Dieser für eine Circular Economy zentrale Faktor spielt auch bei Textilien eine Rolle“, sagt Dr. Volker Berding, Leiter des DBU-Referats Ressourcenmanagement. Das Vorhaben von Dibella hat nach seinen Worten daher Potenzial, den Rohstoffeinsatz zu verringern und eine höherwertige Nutzung der Alttextilien zu verbessern.

Milliken and Company commits to eliminating PFAS

Milliken’s Textile Business plans to eliminate all PFAS-containing materials from its portfolio by December 31, 2022.
The company announced a commitment to eliminate all per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, commonly referred to as PFAS, from the company’s textile finishes and fibers portfolio.

While we do not always begin our journey with perfect information, we strive to make adjustments as new information comes to light.”

Sales
The realization of sales from the exceptionally high order backlog developed better than expected. With sales of CHF 1 510.9 million, Rieter achieved an increase of 56% compared with the previous year (2021: CHF 969.2 million). In the second half of 2022, especially in the fourth quarter, the measures introduced to address material bottlenecks had a positive impact. Consequently, sales increased to CHF 890.3 million compared with the first six months (first half-year 2022: CHF 620.6 million).

EBIT margin
The trend in the EBIT margin was strongly influenced by substantial cost increases, which could only be offset in part through price increases and other remedial measures. In addition, to compensate for material shortages, expenses were incurred in connection with the development of alternative solutions and the acquired businesses.

Rieter succeeded in improving profitability compared with the first half of 2022 due to the higher sales volume and offsetting measures to compensate for increased costs, and expects a positive EBIT margin of around 2% for the full year 2022 (2021: 4.9%).

Order intake
In line with expectations, the order intake of CHF 1 157.3 million in 2022 was below the record year of 2021 (CHF 2 225.7 million). The market situation is characterized by investment restraint due to geopolitical uncertainties, higher financing costs and consumer reticence in important markets.

Order backlog
The company had an order backlog of around CHF 1 540 million at the end of 2022, which thus extends well into 2023 and 2024. In 2022, Rieter recorded order cancellations of less than 10% of the order backlog of CHF 1 840 million at the beginning of the year.

Preparations for ITMA 2023 on schedule
Rieter has continued to boost its innovative capability and, in order to further extend its technology leadership, will present new innovative solutions at ITMA 2023 in Milan.

Action plan to increase sales and profitability
Implementation of the action plan to increase sales and profitability is ongoing. With regard to the profitability of the order backlog, which remains high, the implemented price increases in combination with a favorable trend in costs, particularly in logistics, are having an impact. In addition, progress was made in eliminating material bottlenecks and reducing expenses for the three acquired businesses.

Rieter site sales process
The sales process for the remaining land at the Rieter site in Winterthur (Switzerland) is proceeding according to plan. In total, around 75 000 m2 of land will be sold. The Rieter CAMPUS is not part of this transaction.

INDEX, a leading nonwovens exhibition, will take place in Geneva. About 90 Italian exhibitors will be present at this edition, including over 40 machinery manufacturers. As in past editions, ITA – Italian Trade Agengy, in cooperation with ACIMIT, the Association of Italian Textile Machinery Manufacturers, has organized an exhibition space reserved for companies manufacturing machinery for the sector. There will be 12 exhibiting companies in the Italian pavilion. Of these, the ACIMIT members are: Bematic, Bombi, Bonino, Dell’Orco & Villani, Ferraro, Loptex, Ommi, Rf Systems, Texera, Zappa Macchine. Other ACIMIT member companies will exhibit fair with their own booths.

“The growth in nonwovens production has also driven the demand of machinery for nonwovens, comments Alessandro Zucchi, president of ACIMIT. The Italian technological supply has consequently expanded. At the 2023 INDEX edition, the presence of a significant number of Italian machinery manufacturers testifies their desire to play a leading role also in the production of machinery for nonwovens”.

The trend of Italian exports testifies the strong increase in production of nonwovens machinery. Indeed in 2021 Italian sales abroad reached a value of 102 million euro (+77% over the previous year) and in the first nine months of 2022, the value of Italian exports stood at 92 million euro.

Der DTF-Druck ist ein einfaches und kostengünstiges Verfahren zur Veredelung von Kleidungsstücken, vor allem T-Shirts. Das integrierte Tintenzirkulationssystem und das Design des Behälters für entgaste Tinte verhindern Probleme, die häufig beim DTF-Druck auftreten können, z. B. schlechter Tintenausstoß und die Ablagerunge der Pigmente von Weißtinte. Diese Kerntechnologien, zu denen auch die Nozzle Check Unit (NCU, Düsenprüfeinheit) und das Nozzle Recovery System (NRS, Düsenwiederherstellungssystem) von Mimaki gehören, sorgen dafür, dass alle Prozesse effizient und mit minimalem Aufwand durchgeführt werden können.

Als ersten Vorstoß in ein neues Segment entwickelte Mimaki seine eigene Reihe wasserbasierter Pigmenttinten (PHT50) speziell für diese Lösung. Im März 2023 werden diese Tinten die OEKO-TEX® ECO PASSPORT-Zertifizierung  erhalten und garantieren damit die Einhaltung geltender Sicherheits- und Umweltstandards im Einklang mit Mimakis Nachhaltigkeitsversprechen. Was die Druckmaterialien anbelangt, ist der DTF-Druck deutlich vielseitiger als der Transfer-/Sublimationsdruck, da mit dieser Technologie neben Polyester und TC-Mischgeweben auch andere Textilien sowie helle und dunkle Stoffe verwendet werden können.

Der Drucker wird außerdem mit RasterLink7 RIP-Software geliefert, mit der Anwender einen umfassenden Überblick über den gesamten Prozess vom Entwurf bis zum Endprodukt erhalten und Abläufe rationalisieren können.

The brand used the AATCC (American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists) TM212-2021 test method for fiber fragment release during home laundering. This test was conducted with large sample sizes to account for variability. The testing concluded that Shed Less Fleece reduced fiber fragment shedding by an average of 85% compared to the baseline fabric.

“In 2016 we began looking into how we might test for fiber loss because there wasn’t a lot of research on the issue.” said Aimee LaValley, Polartec Textile Development, Dye and Chemistry Manager. “This led to new products like Polartec Power Air™, new manufacturing processes, as well as our participation in the TextileMission workgroup to study the issue on an interdisciplinary basis.”

TextileMission was a three year collaborative initiative of academia and industry to reduce the impact of textile microplastics funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Founding partners include The Association of the German Sporting Goods Industry, Hochschule Niederrhein - University of Applied Science; TU Dresden - Institute of Water Chemistry; Vaude Sport; WWF Germany; Adidas AG; Henkel AG; Miele & CIE; and Polartec, LLC.

Polartec® Shed Less Fleece will be initially launched in the United States and will be available to customers beginning March 1, 2023. The brand plans to apply the Shed Less process to many other industry-leading fabric platforms and manufacturing facilities around the world.

DIN SPEC 4872 combines analysis of fibre release, biodegradability and ecotoxicity. The test method according to DIN SPEC 4872 shows how many fibres are released during textile laundering, how well these fibres degrade in wastewater and how harmful the fibre residues are to the environment.

Studies have shown that washing textiles releases microfibres into the wash water, which cannot be sufficiently retained by wastewater treatment plants. Synthetic fibres pose the greatest risk to the environment because of their longevity and inability to biodegrade. However, Hohenstein project manager Juliane Alberts does not give the all-clear for biodegradable fibres and natural fibres: "Biodegradability alone does not mean that pure natural fibres, for example, are completely harmless to the environment. They, too, remain in ecosystems until they completely degrade and can also have a negative impact. In addition, additives, auxiliaries or finishes used in textile production can further slow the degradation process and leach into the environment."

The new standard enables textile producers and suppliers to test, evaluate and compare products for fibre release during washing and environmental impact. Juliane Alberts sees this systematic evaluation as an opportunity for the textile industry to take the initiative on environmental impact: "Our reliable data can be used as a basis for more targeted product development. This is a way to actively and consciously control further environmental pollution."

Freudenberg Performance Materials (Freudenberg) is widening its product range of technical packaging textiles. Evolon® ESD protects automotive and industrial parts with electronic components from electrostatic discharge. This includes trim lines, dashboards, mirrors, steering wheels, etc.

The ESD (ElectroStatic Discharge) feature of the new Evolon® technical packing textile provides permanent electrostatic discharging protection and the fabric’s surface resistivity can be customized. This eliminates ESD damage to electronic components during transport because electrostatic charging due to movement and friction is safely prevented. As this kind of damage cannot be detected with the naked eye, Evolon® ESD helps to avoid failures which can occur after the final product is assembled and released. Manufacturers benefit from fewer complaints and warranty costs, as well as better end customer satisfaction.

Further protection feature
Unlike conventional ESD packaging solutions, Evolon® ESD also protects parts surfaces by avoiding micro-scratches or lint contamination. By using Evolon® reusable packaging to transport parts with highly-sensitive surfaces, customers reduce the number of damaged parts and the reject rate.

Additional benefits
Evolon® microfilament textiles are also extremely strong and are available in different weights to meet a wide range of requirements – from lightweight to heavy-duty. Haelixa: Traceability of wool fibers up to the final fabric

The Woolmark Company, the Italian wool fabric mill Vitale Barberis Canonico (VBC) and Haelixa took part in a trial to trace Australian wool fibers up to the final fabric.

Funded by Australian woolgrowers, The Woolmark Company (TWC) is an enterprise that focuses on investments that enhance the profitability, international competitiveness, and sustainability of Australian wool. In their operations, TWC seeks to be transparent and accountable. In line with this strategy, traceability is necessary to ensure transparency and maintain the credibility of TWC.

In December 2021, Haelixa marked wool fibers with their DNA tracing solution. There are infinite DNA markers that could be produced and used to indicate a specific origin, supply chain, material, or particular collection. In this case, a single DNA has been applied to greasy wool and a second DNA marker to scoured wool. The first DNA identifies the origin of the Australian wool, while the second determines the manufacturer where the wool has been further processed; at Vitale Barberis Canonico mill.

Samples were collected from various production stages, where a qPCR test was used to detect each specific DNA marker. Haelixa uses a “Key-Lock” system to detect a marker; one needs to know the particular DNA to screen for, ensuring that the system is tamper-proof. The DNA markers stay safely embedded in the product, enabling traceability of greasy and scoured wool up to greige fabric and finished fabric, respectively.

With increasing cost pressure and competition in the wool fabric market, traceability is becoming a prerequisite to proving authenticity and origin. TWC and Vitale Barberis Canonico support the culture of sustainability and collaboration.
