Black Friday is known as the world's largest shopping event, which is constantly growing in size. Rather than offering highly promoted sales, a Finnish clothing company Pure Waste joined forces with HelsinkiMissio, an NGO battling loneliness in Finland. On Black Friday, instead of buying clothes anyone can donate a friend to people suffering from loneliness.

A Global survey shows that over a third of adults experience feelings of loneliness worldwide. Many who feel lonely try to cope by shopping, which in fact has been proven to aggravate loneliness and can even cause feelings of depression.1

This is why HelsinkiMissio, a Finnish NGO battling loneliness, and Pure Waste, a Finnish clothing manufacturer, joined forces on Black Friday. All Pure Waste’s products on their webstore have been replaced with a chance to donate for HelsinkiMissio’s important work against loneliness.

“Black Friday is known as the biggest commercial event, but for lonely people it can actually be the darkest day of the year. This is why we wanted to shed light on this issue precisely today. We hope that together with Pure Waste we’re able to raise awareness on the issue and furthermore help lonely people”, says Tuula Colliander, Executive Director from HelsinkiMissio.

Black Friday stunt is executed together with Pure Waste, a Finland-based clothing manufacturer that has never taken part to Black Friday due to their values. The company, also known as a pioneer in textile recycling, makes its clothing from 100% recycled cotton, utilizing cutting waste from the textile industry.

Engpass Lieferkette und Warenversorgung - IMPACT 10
Nach Ifo-Umfragen leiden fast alle Modehändler unter Lieferproblemen und sie rechnen damit, dass diese Versorgungslücken noch weit in das Jahr 2022 andauern. Während es in Lockdown-Zeiten noch darum ging, die Warenversorgung mit Hinblick auf Unsicherheit bzgl. der Öffnungszeiten im Textileinzelhandel möglichst flexibel zu halten, kämpfen die Lieferanten nun überwiegend damit, die Ware zielgenau aus den Produktionsländern in die Absatzmärkte zu schaffen. Die Hersteller müssen mit Herausforderungen wie Rohstoffverknappung, Containerstaus und Hafenschließungen umgehen. Wer seine Supply-Chain also bestmöglich im Griff hat, verfügt über einen Wettbewerbsvorteil gegenüber Lieferanten, deren Ware nicht zum geplanten Abverkaufszeitpunkt am POS eingetroffen ist. Hierbei gilt es zum einen den Anteil aus Fernost und Nearshore Produktion auszubalancieren. Aber auch operative Spielregeln in der Warenlogistik müssen berücksichtigt werden. Die Digitalisierung spielt auch weiter eine tragende Rolle, wenn es darum geht Prozesse unternehmensweit schlank und fit zu machen, um so den steigenden Einkaufs- und Logistikkosten entgegenzuwirken.

Wirksame Pillen für die Performance – IMPACT 9
Gerade in wirtschaftlich herausfordernden Zeiten mit steigenden Beschaffungskosten kommt es drauf an, die „richtigen Pillen zu schlucken“, die zu einer Verbesserung der Performance beitragen. Pricing ist der eine Hebel. Im hochwertigen Segment wird bereits versucht, durch selektiven Vertrieb die Preise und Margen zu erhöhen. Doch nicht immer sind Preisanpassungen möglich, vor allem wenn Eckpreislagen gehalten werden müssen oder die Macht des Handels zu groß ist. Umso mehr rücken die eigenen Kosten in den Fokus. Viele Einsparpotenziale, die während der Corona-Hochphase eingeführt wurden, können in den „Regelbetrieb“ überführt werden. Dazu gehört z.B. die Senkung der Marketing-/Vertriebskosten durch digitales Ordern und andere Prozessoptimierungen. Doch das allein reicht nicht: Weitere Kostenstellhebel für die operative Exzellenz liegen erfahrungsgemäß im Einkauf, in der Logistik und Supply Chain, im Neuproduktentwicklungsprozess sowie last but noch least in den Gemeinkosten. In allen Segmenten spielt die Digitalisierung eine Schlüsselrolle: Digitale Prozesse und Vernetzung sowie digitale Tools sind erforderlich, um effizienter, robuster und damit renditestärker zu werden.

Konsequente Nachhaltigkeit im gesamten Geschäftsmodell - IMPACT 8
Das Thema „Nachhaltigkeit“ ist durch die Pandemie zunächst in der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung etwas in den Hintergrund gerückt. Gleichzeitig haben die meisten Unternehmen den gesellschaftlichen und politischen Druck sowie die zunehmende Wichtigkeit für den Endverbraucher erkannt und zahlreiche Initiativen und konkrete Maßnahmen in diese Richtung gestartet. Für echte Nachhaltigkeit in der Textilbranche reichen einzelne Projekte jedoch nicht. Die Dimensionen „Planet“, „People“ und „Performance“ müssen konsequent angegangen werden. Umweltfaktoren (Planet) sind z.B. nachhaltige Praktiken in der der Rohstoffgewinnung (inkl. Recyclinganteilen), Verringerung des Wasserverbrauchs in der Produktion oder die Reduktion von Verpackungsabfällen. In der Dimension „People“ sind insbesondere die sozialen Standards in der Produktion im Fokus. Wer nachhaltig am Markt vertreten zu sein will,  braucht zudem ein robustes Geschäftsmodell, das nachhaltig gute Ergebnisse liefert, um auch in die Zukunft investieren zu können (Performance). Nur so sind Unternehmen auch krisenresistent.

Nachhaltigkeit spielt zugleich bei den Kaufentscheidungen der Konsumenten eine immer größere Rolle: Das wirkt sich auch auf den E-Commerce-Markt aus: Für Onlineshops reicht es heutzutage nicht mehr, einfach nur schnell Pakete auszuliefern. Die Konsumenten wünschen sich, dass auch die Logistik den Klimaschutz berücksichtigt. Denn beim Paketversand – insbesondere über Grenzen hinweg – entsteht besonders viel klimaschädliches CO2. Vor allem die Lieferung auf der letzten Meile verursacht eine hohe C02-Belastung. Um hier die Nachhaltigkeit zu erhöhen, gibt es viele Möglichkeiten: beispielsweise eine optimierte Nachtzustellung, dynamische Tourenplanungen und den Ausbau von Paketstationen.

Was bedeutet klimaneutral?
Doch auch Onlinehändler selbst haben die Möglichkeit, etwas zum Umweltschutz beizutragen. „E-Tailer, die den Wunsch ihrer Kunden nach mehr Nachhaltigkeit berücksichtigen möchten, können auf einen klimaneutralen Versand umstellen“, so Dr. Plehn. Ein Versand ist grundsätzlich klimaneutral, wenn dabei kein CO2 entsteht, also zum Beispiel bei einer Zustellung per Fahrrad. Dass auf dem gesamten Lieferweg kein CO2 freigesetzt wird, ist für Onlinehändler in der Praxis jedoch kaum umsetzbar. Eine Alternative ist daher, die entstandenen Emissionen nachträglich auszugleichen. Dazu wird der CO2-Ausstoß der gesamten Lieferkette berechnet, der wiederum mit einer Investition in Umweltschutzprojekte oder klimafördernde Maßnahmen ausgeglichen werden kann. Durch diese Kompensation wird rechnerisch die Klimaneutralität wieder hergestellt. Onlinehändler haben die Möglichkeit, dies entweder direkt durch beispielsweise Baumpflanzungen zu tun oder indirekt, etwa durch die Förderung von Projekten zum Klimaschutz. Der direkte Weg ist für Onlinehändler sehr aufwendig und kostenintensiv. Darüber hinaus hat nicht jeder die Möglichkeit, selbst ein Umweltschutzprojekt zu starten. These promising findings point to reduced waste accumulation in both oceans and landfills.

NILIT, owner of the sustainable brand SENSIL®, has also teamed up with The Ocean Foundation’s Blue Resilience Initiative to reestablish and safeguard essential ocean meadows and other coastal habitats. These marine grasslands, which are being damaged at a rate of two football fields every hour, are vital ecosystems for sequestering CO2 from the atmosphere, thus reducing global warming and ocean acidification. In addition, ocean grasslands sustain sea life, defend coast lines against erosion and storm surge, and support economies around the world.

RGE: Second Annual Update on Textile Fibre Innovation and Technology

Royal Golden Eagle (RGE) has released its 2021 progress report on its commitment to invest USD200 million in next-generation textile fibre innovation and technology over a ten-year period which started in 2019.

The annual report provides an update on the activities undertaken by RGE and its business groups (Sateri, APR, APRIL, Bracell) involved in the fashion value chain to advance its ambition towards closed-loop, circular and climate-positive cellulosic fibre.

In 2021, Sateri achieved full compliance with the emission limits set out in the European Union Best Available Techniques Reference Document (EU-BAT BREF) for all of its five viscose mills in China, two years ahead of schedule. Bracell completed construction of the world’s largest and greenest new generation pulp mill in São Paulo which uses cutting-edge technology for fossil fuel-free generation.

Royal Golden Eagle (RGE) has released its 2021 progress report on its commitment to invest USD200 million in next-generation textile fibre innovation and technology over a ten-year period which started in 2019.

The annual report provides an update on the activities undertaken by RGE and its business groups (Sateri, APR, APRIL, Bracell) involved in the fashion value chain to advance its ambition towards closed-loop, circular and climate-positive cellulosic fibre.

In 2021, Sateri achieved full compliance with the emission limits set out in the European Union Best Available Techniques Reference Document (EU-BAT BREF) for all of its five viscose mills in China, two years ahead of schedule. Bracell completed construction of the world’s largest and greenest new generation pulp mill in São Paulo which uses cutting-edge technology for fossil fuel-free generation.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to restrict travel and collaboration, RGE persisted in building upon existing partnerships, while entering into new agreements. Sateri strengthened its strategic collaboration with Infinited Fiber Company, participating in the company’s EUR30 million funding round, which attracted new and existing investors such as H&M Group, Adidas, BESTSELLER and Zalando.

New partnerships formed by RGE included a five-year textile recycling research collaboration with Nanyang Technological University Singapore, and a three-year strategic partnership with the Textile and Fashion Federation Singapore which seeks, among others goals, to advance research and innovation in circular economy approaches to fashion waste in Asia.

RGE’s in-house R&D team has made good progress in advancing its textile-to-textile project, focusing on producing quality viscose using recycled cotton textiles as feedstock. To support plans to build a textile recycling facility in Indonesia, and as part of commercial feasibility analysis, studies examining the availability of textile waste and textile recycling landscapes in China, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh were completed.

Sateri remains on track in developing a product with 50 per cent recycled content by 2023, and to reach 100 per cent by 2030. It also aims for 20 per cent of its feedstock to contain alternative or recycled materials by 2025. In this similar vein, APR will source 20 per cent of its feedstock from alternative or recycled materials by 2030.

Gina Tricot releases its first collection that has been produced with We aRe SpinDye. The collection is part of Gina Tricot's innovation program Gina Lab. and consists of a coat, shirt, trousers and two bags colored with We aRe SpinDye's method.

With the collaboration, Gina Tricot continues to focus on sustainability, now with the coloring process at the center. Of all the resources that arise during the entire lifespan of a garment - from the production of raw materials, to recycling, 80% is used during the production phase itself. To maximize the effects of the sustainability changeover, an increased focus is required on the entire production process and in particular on the most resource-intensive of them all: the dyeing.

In 2021, Berto Industria Tessile embarked on a series of journeys through the denim supply chain, touching both B2B and B2C worlds.

Alchemie Technology asks fashion industry to reduce emissions

Alchemie Technology, an innovator of low energy, waterless, textile dyeing and finishing technology, is calling on COP26 leaders to support the global fashion industry in the adoption of new manufacturing technology, which will dramatically reduce carbon emissions and fashion’s impact on climate change.

While the fashion industry is one of the most polluting on the planet, second only to oil and gas, and greenhouse gas emissions from textile dyeing at around 3% of global emissions outweigh that of all international flights and maritime shipping combined, it is an industry that can also reduce CO2 emissions the fastest, just by changing the way it dyes fabrics.  

Alchemie Technology, an innovator of low energy, waterless, textile dyeing and finishing technology, is calling on COP26 leaders to support the global fashion industry in the adoption of new manufacturing technology, which will dramatically reduce carbon emissions and fashion’s impact on climate change.

While the fashion industry is one of the most polluting on the planet, second only to oil and gas, and greenhouse gas emissions from textile dyeing at around 3% of global emissions outweigh that of all international flights and maritime shipping combined, it is an industry that can also reduce CO2 emissions the fastest, just by changing the way it dyes fabrics.  

Fabric dyeing is the most polluting part of fashion and activewear manufacturing, involving industrial scale dye baths and huge amounts of dye chemicals, steam, electrical power, and consequent high CO2 emissions.  Repeated washing of the dyed fabric, required to remove dye residue, is responsible for 20% of the world’s wastewater pollution and excess dye is discharged into waterways, affecting the health of some of the world’s poorest communities. In more regulated areas, water pollution is reduced through reliance on energy intensive water treatment plants.

However, an environmental step change can be achieved by adopting new digital technology that can dye fabrics with an 85% reduction in energy consumption and a dramatic 95% reduction of the 1.3 trillion litres of water currently used by the industry each year.

For example, dyeing one polyester shirt using current methods generates 4.5 litres of wastewater and produces 0.17 Kg of CO2, compared to low energy digital technology, which uses less than 0.2 litres of water and reduces carbon emissions to 0.03 Kg.  Multiply these numbers by the billions of garments dyed each year and the scale of the environmental problem, if nothing changes, is clear to see. Equally, the amount by which the textile industry can improve its carbon footprint is dramatic and can be done quickly if action is taken now.

Following a thorough assessment by rating agency S&P adidas’ sustainability performance has received an outstanding evaluation. Assessed across Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) dimensions, adidas was awarded with an ESG Profile Score of 79 out of 100. Combined with a strong Preparedness Score (+6), the company’s overall ESG Evaluation Score amounts to 85, placing adidas sixth in the entire S&P Global Rating Universe.

In its assessment, S&P emphasizes adidas’ industry-leading approach to innovation, supply chain management and consumer engagement. In particular, credit is given to adidas’ ambitions to scale the use of sustainable materials, to expand circular services and to deliver against ambitious net-zero emission targets. In addition to adidas’ strong control mechanisms over its supply chain ensuring fair and safe labor practices, the analysis also calls out the integration of a sustainability target into the compensation system of the Executive Board. The close interaction between the Supervisory Board and the Executive Board is seen as exemplary and supportive of the overall strategy execution.

The expanded matchmaking events at CHIC were also enthusiastically received.
In total, over 37 matchmaking events took place in the specially set up matching area consisting of several presentation platforms and private negotiation rooms at the fair. From company presentations by industry giants such as Shein, through trade fair tours to selected one-on-one discussions, CHIC brought exhibitors and visitors together in a targeted manner. More than 600 participants have been matched by this CHIC event. Among them visitors such as Shein, Walmart, Wang Yi Yan Xuan, Tiktok, BAILIAN GROUP, LIQUN etc, parts of the organizer's broad network.

Continuing growth: sustainable productions
Sustainability is one of the most important consumer trends in China. CHIC played the theme in all exhibition areas; from womenswear, kidswear and menswear to accessories, sustainable collections were represented in all segments.

Design talent and traditional styles
In the IMPULSES area, innovative designer brands showed inspiring trends, high-quality collections and fashion variety like Kmusso, MIJA or Yu Jian Tian with its new design collection made by natural materials such as mulberry silk and wool, presenting the unique traditional Chinese style.

CHIC Shanghai presented the entire range of the fashion business in a total of 12 exhibition segments. This year's acclaimed visual concept, created by lava beijing, has been awarded the Bronze Award of the Hiiibrand Awards 2021 in the Identity category.

Digital tools and physical events
In addition to the on-site trade fair offer, CHIC is expanding its reach through the consistent use of digital tools. Research for cosmic missions: SmartTex provides data on vital functions

It looks like a normal shirt, but it has it all: The new SmartTex shirt uses integrated sensors to transfer physiological data from astronauts to Earth via a wireless communication network. In this way, the effects of the space environment on the human cardiovascular system will be evaluated and documented, especially with regard to long-term manned space missions. Developed by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in cooperation with DSI Aerospace Technology, the Medical Faculty of Bielefeld University and textile research partner Hohenstein, SmartTex will be tested for the first time as part of the Wireless Compose-2 (WICO2) project by German ESA astronaut Dr. Matthias Maurer, who will leave for his ‘Cosmic Kiss’ mission on the International Space Station (ISS) for six months on October 30, 2021.

In this way, the effects of the space environment on the human cardiovascular system will be evaluated and documented, especially with regard to long-term manned space missions. Developed by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in cooperation with DSI Aerospace Technology, the Medical Faculty of Bielefeld University and textile research partner Hohenstein, SmartTex will be tested for the first time as part of the Wireless Compose-2 (WICO2) project by German ESA astronaut Dr. Matthias Maurer, who will leave for his ‘Cosmic Kiss’ mission on the International Space Station (ISS) for six months on October 30, 2021.

"We were already able to gain valuable insights into the interaction of the body, clothing and climate under microgravity conditions during the previous projects Spacetex (2014) and Spacetex2 (2018)," explains Hohenstein Senior Scientific Expert Dr. Jan Beringer. The insights provided at the time by the mission of ESA astronaut Dr. Alexander Gerst have now been directly incorporated into the development of the new SmartTex shirt at Hohenstein. "Matthias Maurer can wear his tailor-made shirt comfortably on his body during his everyday work on the International Space Station. For this, we used his body measurements as the basis for our cut development and the production of the shirt. We integrated the necessary sensors as well as data processing and communication modules into the shirt's cut in such a way that they interfere as little as possible and are always positioned in the right place, regardless of the wearing situation. This is the prerequisite for reliably measuring the relevant physiological data." The SmartTex shirt is intended to provide a continuous picture of the vital functions of astronauts. This will be particularly relevant for future long-term manned space missions to the Moon and Mars.

For example, during the BEAT experiment (Ballistocardiography for Extraterrestrial Applications and long-Term missions), Matthias Maurer will be the first astronaut to wear a T-shirt equipped with sensors that measure his ballistocardiographic data such as pulse and relative blood pressure. For this purpose, the sensors were calibrated in the :envihab research facility at the DLR Institute of Aerospace Medicine in Cologne. Details on the contraction rate and opening and closing times of the heart valves, which are normally only accessible via sonography or computer tomography, can also be read from the data material. The goal is to study the effects of the space environment on the human cardiovascular system. To be able to analyse these effects realistically, Matthias Maurer's ballistocardiographic data will be recorded before, during and after his stay on the ISS. For the future, a technology transfer of the SmartTex shirt for application in the field of fitness or even in telemedicine is conceivable.

Wireless Compose-2 (WICO2)
The project was planned and prepared by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and its cooperation partners DSI Aerospace Technology, Hohenstein and the University of Bielefeld. The wireless communication network reads sensor data and can determine the position of people and objects in space by propagation times of radio pulses. It is also available as a platform for several experiments on the ISS. The determined data is temporarily stored within the network and read out at regular intervals by the astronauts. These data packets are then transferred to Earth via the ISS link and analysed by the research teams. It can generate its own energy from artificial light sources via solar cells.

The use of We aRe SpinDye's technology contributes to reducing both water consumption and CO2 emissions, which in turn leads to a lower impact on the world's ecosystem and creates conditions for our co-existence with nature.

Up to 24% of a garment's entire climate footprint occurs during dyeing. We aRe SpinDye's technology can reduce the consumption of the earth's resources in textile production. On average, the reduction of water is -75%, chemicals -90% and energy consumption and CO2 emissions -30%.

In just one year, the clothing industry uses 9 billion cubic meters of water (which is in line with the annual need for drinkingwater for the entire population of our planet) and 168 million tons of process chemicals to dye fabrics. We aRe SpinDye now hopes that more players in the industry will pay attention to the ways that are available when it comes to resource-efficient dyeing process and quickly implement this technology in their production.
