Kraig Labs Spider Silk Production Operations Unaffected by Southeast Asia Typhoons

Kraig Biocraft Laboratories, Inc., a world leader in spider silk technology*, announced that its production operations in Vietnam remain fully secure and uninterrupted following the recent series of typhoons that have impacted parts of Southeast Asia.

Kraig Labs confirmed that its spider silk production facilities and infrastructure sustained no damage or disruption, including its mulberry feedstock supplies, from the severe weather events that caused widespread flooding in lowland regions. The Company’s strategic decision made in 2024 to relocate its operations into the protected highlands has proven to be a highly valuable investment in operational resilience and long-term stability.

Kraig Labs confirmed that its spider silk production facilities and infrastructure sustained no damage or disruption, including its mulberry feedstock supplies, from the severe weather events that caused widespread flooding in lowland regions. The Company’s strategic decision made in 2024 to relocate its operations into the protected highlands has proven to be a highly valuable investment in operational resilience and long-term stability.

Kraig Labs also confirmed that its former facility in Quang Nam province, which has since been closed, was among the areas affected by flooding. However, all Company equipment, staff, and production assets had been permanently and successfully relocated from that site in September, well ahead of the storms.
 
In addition to moving its infrastructure and production to the highlands, Kraig Labs has implemented a strategy of maintaining multiple, parallel production facilities. This approach not only supports scalability but also serves as an additional safeguard against potential disruptions from natural disasters or other unforeseen events. By building redundancy and flexibility into its production network, the Company continues to strengthen the foundation for long-term growth and reliability.

U.S. Textile Industry Urges Stronger USMCA Rules


The National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO), representing the full spectrum of U.S. textiles from fiber, yarn, and fabrics to finished sewn products, welcomes the review of the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA) and calls on the administration to strengthen and to extend the trade deal to preserve a crucial Western Hemisphere co-production chain, enhance customs enforcement, and confront predatory trade practices that threaten domestic jobs and supply chains.

NCTO expressed strong support for preservation of the current exemption of USMCA-qualifying trade from International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) tariffs imposed to curb the flow of illicit fentanyl and illegal migration, while also calling for a similar exemption for qualifying trade under the Dominican Republic-Central America-United States Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR) currently subject to IEEPA reciprocal tariffs, in public comments submitted to the U.S. Trade Representative’s office today.

The U.S. textile industry ships $12.3 billion, or 53 percent, of its total global textile exports to Mexico and Canada--by far the largest export markets for American textile producers. Those component materials often come back as finished products to the United States under the USMCA. The $20 billion in two-way trade between the United States and these countries spurs enormous textile investment and employment at home.

NCTO’s public comments were submitted as part of a USTR public consultation on the operation of the USCMA in advance of a joint review of the USMCA with Mexico and Canada to take place next year.

“We welcome the Trump administration’s efforts to combat the highly aggressive predatory trade practices facing our industry to offset decades-long inequities and to establish a more balanced trade environment for U.S. textile and apparel manufacturers,” NCTO stated. “We ask the administration not to lose sight of the valuable trade partnerships we have with countries in the Western Hemisphere, on which the U.S. textile industry depends. We also hope the administration will…address issues of consequence to our industry, including harmful exceptions to yarn forward and increased customs cooperation among the USMCA parties to confront unfair trade practices.”

Key areas outlined for improvement of the USMCA include the following:

  • Preserving and strengthening the agreement’s yarn-forward rule of origin, by limiting harmful exceptions to the rule, such as tariff preference levels and single transformation rules that weaken regional supply chains and disadvantage U.S. manufacturers.
  • Strengthening USMCA Customs Enforcement Cooperation including trade data reviews and public reporting of data, creation of a public blacklist of repeat offenders of trade laws, and intensifying punishment of customs offenders in all three countries.

AZL’s new project therefore takes a holistic approach — thermoplastic -driven vessel designs, manufacturing processes, and material configurations to maximise both economic and technical performance.

Dr. Martin Kerschbaum, Manager ME22 at Toyota Motor Europe, highlights the motivation behind Toyota’s participation :
“The usage of thermoplastic resins for manufacturing of high -pressure hydrogen storage vessels is of high interest for Toyota. This is due to potential advantages in terms of design, processing, performance, and circularity. It is essential to compare and evaluate the diverse options of design and manufacturing strategies for high -pressure vessels based on thermoplastic composite materials. Gaining additional insights into the key influencing factors on material efficiency, production scalability and realistic cost - structure scenarios is a crucial part of this process. AZL’s structured approach – a combination of know-how in applications, composite materials and production systems with expertise across the entire value chain – provides Toyota with valuable input for the further development of innovative storage systems.”

A Structured, Comparative Development Framework
The nine-month project brings together international industry partners to explore new thermoplastic vessel concepts. It is structured into three work packages:
WP1: Market & Technology Landscape – mapping state -of -the -art technologies, certification protocols, and relevant IP.
WP2: Conceptual Design & Manufacturing Strategies – developing vessel architectures optimised for thermoplastics, evaluating design variants, and defining production system concepts.
WP3: Performance, Cost & Production Benchmarking – quantifying material usage, recyclability, cycle times, cost per unit, and carbon impact to guide industrial decision -making.

From Knowledge to Competitive Advantage
By actively involving engineers and decision-makers from participating companies, AZL’s Joint Partner Projects combine technical depth with strategic relevance. Participants not only gain access to engineering results and benchmarking data, but also develo p in -house expertise — enabling them to communicate more effectively with customers, suppliers, and investors in the hydrogen and CNG markets.

Glenn Barrett will continue to lead the OrthoLite business. External reporting will transition to this structure for the financial year ending December 2026.

Over 100 Italian companies are exhibiting at ITMA ASIA + CITME Singapore 2025, taking place from October 28 to 31. With an area of around 4,000 square meters, Italy ranks among the top exhibiting Countries, as in previous editions. 53 Italian exhibitors will show their innovations within the National Sector Groups, organized by ACIMIT (Association of Italian Textile Machinery Manufacturers) and Italian Trade Agency.

ITMA ASIA + CITME show has always been the main showcase for textile machinery manufacturers in Asia, which absorbs 50% of global exports for a value of 8.8 billion euro in 2024. The main world market for textile machinery are China and India, importing textile machines for a total value of 4.3 billion euro.

For Italian manufacturers as well, the Asian market is the top foreign destination. In 2024, Italian exports to Asia amounted to 664 million euro, while in the first six months of 2025 Italian sales to this geographical area grew at 1% rate on the same 2024 period, reaching a value of 317 million euro. China, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh are the main Asian destinations for Made in Italy machinery.

Girbau, a global leader in industrial laundry solutions, marked a key milestone this week: the official inauguration of its new production plant in Oshkosh (Wisconsin, USA), coinciding with the celebration of its 105th anniversary. Both events reinforce Girbau’s commitment to strengthening its presence in the North American market and to continuing its sustainable and customer-focused growth.

The inaugural event, held on October 29, was attended by representatives from local Wisconsin and Oshkosh authorities, ACCIÓ (the Agency for Business Competitiveness of the Government of Catalonia), and members of the Girbau and Continental Laundry Solutions teams. The new plant, with a current production capacity of 3,000 machines per year, has been designed to meet the specific needs of the U.S. market. Its production is exclusively destined for the local market, reinforcing the company’s strategy of proximity and service, and contributing to greater operational efficiency, faster delivery times, and a reduction in the logistical footprint.

Francois Guetat brings over two decades of global experience in operations, supply chain, and manufacturing excellence. The EU project TEX 4.0 is an innovative initiative that aims to revolutionize vocational education and training in the textile industry. The focus was on developing a tailor-made curriculum that takes into account the specific needs of trainers and learners in the field of new technologies. This curriculum provides important tools to help learners acquire digital skills. In addition, the project offers a comprehensive and innovative training package focusing on Industry 4.0 skills to optimally prepare learners for the technological requirements of the modern working world. 

TEX4.0 provides engaging and attractive training materials to make the textile industry more appealing to younger generations. A key objective of the project is to promote active engagement and the use of participatory approaches in vocational education and training to ensure a more interactive and effective learning experience. Through these efforts, TEX4.0 aims to set a new standard in vocational education and training, making it more relevant, attractive, and effective in order to prepare learners for the challenges and opportunities of the digital age in the textile industry.

The project, which began on November 1, 2023, will end on October 31, 2025. The six partners from Greece (KAINOTOMIA), France (IDL – Institut de la Mode), Romania (UPB-CAMIS), Belgium (CAMARABELUX – Chamber of Commerce Belgium-Luxembourg), Italy (Lottozero Textillabore), and Germany (TU Dresden) worked together for two years as part of the EU-co-funded Erasmus+ project TEX 4.0.

The TEX4.0 training suite comprises three different areas:

  • E-learning platform with 12 modules on new technologies in the textile industry for vocational training students;
  • Trainer's Corner with modules in PPT format and quiz questions for self-assessment in raw format, aimed at vocational training instructors and stakeholders in the textile industry;
  • Textile4all area with 18 case studies on the various areas of application of Industry 4.0 technologies in the textile industry, aimed at all target groups. Six case studies were developed using augmented reality (AR) technology to make them more attractive to learners. 

The TUD carried out the national pilot activities in Germany at the Institute for Textile Machinery and High Performance Materials Technology. The aim of these activities was to present the TEX 4.0 project and the developed learning platform to textile trainers and learners. Over 40 participants took part in the pilot trials, including highly qualified lecturers from the textile sector, experts from the textile industry, and future learners. The pilot tests in Germany successfully confirmed the relevance and quality of the TEX 4.0 project and developed the training suite. Participants rated the project positively for improving the digital skills of both learners and trainers and promoting innovation and new technologies in the textile industry.
 
All learning materials developed are freely accessible on an online platform, so that everyone—from vocational students and teachers to small business owners—can explore the materials, earn certificates of completion, and apply new skills directly in their professional practice.

Uster AFIS 6 has been launched earlier this year but will be presented at ITMA Asia + CITME in Singapore first time to an audience in Asia. The next-generation AFIS stands out by uniquely testing man-made fiber properties in addition to cotton in the same unit. It provides critical data to optimize fiber process control in spinning, paving the way for superior yarn quality and reduced waste.

AFIS 6 can be seamlessly integrated in the mills quality management regime by connecting to Uster Quality Expert and the integration of the Uster Statistics. The enhanced user experience result from the new user interface and its various languages available is a key highlight. Another plus is simplified data analysis through the integral reporting functionality.

Uster Fiber2Yarn for the great picture

In DENIM HALO, it is combined with a tailored Archroma dye solution according to mill-specific production needs:

  • DENISOL® pre-reduced indigo dyes, including an innovative aniline-free formulation;

Impact assessments using Archroma's ONE WAY Impact Calculator demonstrate substantial environmental benefits for DENIM HALO versus standard processes with ZDHC Level 3 MRSL compliance. Results include water savings of 40-56%, energy reductions of 30-36%, and CO2 emission cuts of 33-34% depending on the dye formulation used. The benefits extend beyond sustainability to safety, and economics. Mills can produce distressed effects without modifying standard dye recipes or equipment setup. The process enhances worker safety by enabling high-contrast laser etching, eliminating potassium permanganate and manual scraping. DENIM HALO also reduces caustic soda consumption in sulfur mercerizing and enables easier washdown. Technical advantages include reduced yarn shrinkage and improved garment tensile strength, especially on black denim, with lower chemical use in dyeing and finishing.

International technology group ANDRITZ has entered into a collaboration with Tandem Repeat Technologies, a pioneering biotechnology company, to bring to the market industrial-scale solutions for producing ProcellTM, a new sustainable fiber for textiles and nonwovens.

The collaboration brings together Tandem Repeat’s expertise in advanced biotechnology and ANDRITZ’s extensive experience as a supplier of solutions and plants for the production of nonwovens and manmade cellulosic fibers. The two companies aim to support the textile industry’s transition toward more sustainable production and alternatives to conventional synthetic fibers.

Procell, developed and patented by Tandem Repeat, is a biomanufactured fiber made from proteins. Its wool-like softness, exceptional strength, durability, and versatility make it well-suited for a broad range of applications.

Aachen Summer School: Strengthening German-Korean cooperation in 4D and robotics

The Aachen Summer School has established itself as an important platform for promoting cooperation between RWTH Aachen University and Seoul National University. The focus is on practice-oriented research projects in the field of 4D and robotics technologies, which have been successfully implemented for years at the Institut für Textiltechnik of RWTH Aachen University.

This year, the theme of the Summer School was soft robotics and 4D materials. Participating students had the opportunity to develop innovative concepts for gripping systems by working with various actuators and stepper motors.

The programme structure comprised two intensive weeks. In the first week, various sample projects, including a three-finger gripper, were presented and replicated. In the second week, students were able to develop a modular system under supervision and implement their own project ideas.

The International Office at RWTH Aachen University encouraged German students to take part in this unique opportunity during their stay in Korea. Associate Professor Howon Lee specifically promoted the summer school to German mechanical engineering students.

The Hot Button Report 2025 is further proof that Lenzing AG is well above the industry average. EDANA calls for clarity and consistency on the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)

EDANA, the international association representing the nonwovens and related industries, considers the European Commission’s recent U-turn on the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) a missed opportunity to deliver a clear and effective framework to help effectively fight global deforestation. 

The recent announcement adds unnecessary complexity where simplification was needed. Instead of offering certainty, it introduces confusion amongst operators, disrupts already intricate supply chains, and risks undermining Europe’s competitiveness. 

„Our members are committed to supporting global efforts to prevent deforestation, however, the Regulation in its current format - supported by an IT system still unfit for purpose - presents fundamental challenges, including issues around polygon geolocation and excessive due diligence requirements that remain unresolved“, stated the association.

The recent announcement adds unnecessary complexity where simplification was needed. Instead of offering certainty, it introduces confusion amongst operators, disrupts already intricate supply chains, and risks undermining Europe’s competitiveness. 

„Our members are committed to supporting global efforts to prevent deforestation, however, the Regulation in its current format - supported by an IT system still unfit for purpose - presents fundamental challenges, including issues around polygon geolocation and excessive due diligence requirements that remain unresolved“, stated the association. 

EDANA emphasizes that the Regulation must not be pushed through prematurely: The European Commission should maintain its original proposal to the European Parliament and delay implementation by 12 months. Such a step would allow sufficient time to ensure the system is workable and fair for all operators. 

Frequent changes in direction erode business confidence and create uncertainty across global markets. The latest developments have already led to confusion on both sides of the Atlantic, with some countries calling for an accelerated timeline while others urge delay.

A year before the start of the season, CHT is publishing the latest trend colors for autumn and winter 2026/27 in its Fashion News brochure. Based on the international PANTONE® color system, CHT presents three inspiring color worlds that give designers, producers, and creative minds new ideas for the coming season. 

The color compositions set stylistic accents and offer seasonal inspiration, key colors, harmonious color combinations, and application ideas for different materials and product groups in women's or men's fashion, sportswear, and streetwear. 

In addition to the 18 selected trend colors, Fashion News also contains the matching recipes for exact implementation with high-quality CHT dyes. The recipes are available for a wide range of applications, from garment and polyamide dyeing to polyester, cellulose, and printing. The sustainable BEZAKTIV ONE product line is also part of the selection again.

As in the previous year, the brochure is published in a slim format. The recipes are available exclusively in digital form via the interactive ePaper on the CHT ePaper Portal, the CHT homepage, or the CHT Textile Dyes app. This is a conscious effort to save paper and resources.

The cover photo of the current issue shows Anna Krepelka, Laboratory Technician and Assistant Textile Care at CHT Switzerland AG. Having been with the company for ten years, she inspires with a style that shows that fashion can be much more than convention. Through the creative combination of different elements, she repeatedly sets exciting accents. Her look makes it clear: individuality is the most beautiful statement. 

The photos were taken by Gerhard Bildstein, Technical Manager Pretreatment and Recycling, who has been with CHT Switzerland AG for over seventeen years. With his trained eye and keen sense for the right moment, he succeeds in capturing special images that are authentic and expressive.
