Performance textile awards focus on membranes and bio-based systems

The October 2026 PERFORMANCE DAYS material awards highlight a shift in functional fabric development from isolated performance figures towards the interaction of fibre chemistry, fabric construction, durability and end-of-life design. The Munich fair’s jury selected products spanning microporous membranes, bio-based polyester, hybrid laminates, engineered wool and regenerated fibres. Several entries provide unusually specific material compositions and test figures, although these are supplier-submitted data rather than independently replicated comparisons.

The Performance Award went to FLYTEC for FLYTEC DEFEND, a lightweight shell fabric specified at 89 g/m² with a 20,000 mm hydrostatic head and a stated moisture-vapour transmission figure of 20,000 g/m² per 24 hours. Its construction uses a stretchable microporous polypropylene membrane and a durable water-repellent finish. The award material describes a recycled-polyester textile face and positions the system for protective, breathable outerwear. The jury highlighted the combination of weather resistance and movement freedom rather than waterproofing alone.

The jury highlighted the combination of weather resistance and movement freedom rather than waterproofing alone.

Pontetorto received the Eco Award for a 200 g/m² fabric based on wood-derived bio-PET. The manufacturer uses a mass-balance approach to attribute renewable feedstock to the polyester supply chain. This is a different claim from physical segregation of biobased molecules in each finished fibre; sourcing and certification documentation therefore remain important when brands communicate the material’s renewable content. The official release refers to the award fabric as 61040/BIOBASED, while the fair’s live award page displays 6140/Biobased. The identifier should be confirmed before product-level publication.

PALTEX won the Innovation Award for PureCycle 2L, a laminate combining 86% bio-based polyester and 14% bio-based elastane in the textile layer with a TPEE membrane that contains 50% bio-based material derived from corn-stalk residues. Although the individual components have high bio-based shares, the organiser puts the renewable proportion of the complete laminate at approximately 30% by weight. Its declared specifications are 175 g/m², a 5,000 mm water column and 500 g/m²/24h breathability. The distinction between component and finished-laminate percentages is crucial for accurate claims.

The Wool Award went to TAKISADA Corporation for New Wool Net, a 105 g/m² open-mesh fabric containing 67% wool and 33% polyamide. A twist-free yarn construction is intended to trap insulating air while maintaining ventilation. The organiser reports drying performance up to five times faster than conventional merino, a claim that requires scrutiny of the test method and comparator before wider generalisation. In the cellulose category, Pharma Foods International was recognised for a 70% regenerated-cellulose / 30% wool jersey incorporating Ovoveil, a fibre developed using upcycled eggshell membranes. High Fashion Garments received the Bodywear Award for a silk, graphene-nylon and elastane knit designed for next-to-skin thermal comfort.

The breadth of the selections is commercially significant for sportswear and outdoor developers. Material differentiation is increasingly achieved by combining fibre origin, membrane design, yarn geometry and garment-level comfort rather than maximising a single laboratory metric. Buyers will still need application-specific validation, particularly for repeated laundering, abrasion, chemical restrictions and substantiated environmental claims. The official source does not establish commercial volumes or the availability of every award-winning material at industrial scale.

Brazil: The Italian Textile and Textile-Machinery Sector Takes Centre Stage at Two Workshops

From 19 to 24 October 2026, Brazil will host a mission showcasing Italian excellence in the textile and textile machinery sectors, with two workshops scheduled for 20 October in the state of Santa Catarina and 22 October in São Paulo. The initiative will bring together Italian companies specialising in textile machinery, yarns, fabrics and clothing accessories, with the aim of strengthening commercial and industrial ties between the two countries and opening up new opportunities for collaboration.

Organised by the Italian Trade Agency in collaboration with ACIMIT and Confindustria Moda, the mission will comprise two stages in key areas of Brazil’s textile industry. The programme includes seminars featuring presentations by Italian companies, B2B meetings with local industry representatives and visits to local production facilities. The first stage will take place in the state of Santa Catarina, in the areas of Blumenau, Joinville and Brusque, while the second will take place in the state of São Paulo, with activities also planned in Americana and at Denim City São Paulo, a major centre of innovation and a key hub for the textile and denim industries.

The initiative aims to showcase the expertise and innovative capabilities of the entire Italian supply chain, which is internationally recognised for the high quality of its products and technologies. In particular, the Italian textile machinery industry stands out for its ability to develop advanced, customised solutions that meet the needs of a sector increasingly focused on production efficiency, sustainability and technological innovation.

Brazil is one of the most strategic markets in Latin America for Italian textile machinery manufacturers. In 2025, Italian exports of textile machinery to Brazil reached €48 million, while in the first half of 2026 they amounted to €20 million, placing Brazil tenth among the leading destination markets for Italian textile machinery. The most sought-after technologies are those related to finishing, which accounts for 57% of Italian textile machinery exports to Brazil, followed by accessories and other machinery, each representing 11%, and knitting machinery, at 10%.

“Brazil is a market of great interest to our industry, with which we have well-established commercial relations and significant prospects for collaboration,” said Marco Salvadè, President of ACIMIT. “This mission represents a concrete opportunity to strengthen dialogue between Italian companies and Brazilian operators, fostering new synergies across the entire textile supply chain. Our companies’ ability to offer innovative, flexible and sustainable technologies can make a significant contribution to modernising the local textile industry and enhancing its competitiveness. The decision to organise two workshops in different manufacturing regions of the country also demonstrates our commitment to fostering direct dialogue with Brazil’s various industrial clusters, thereby making the most of the opportunities offered by this important market.” The initiative, organised by the Italian Trade Agency and ACIMIT with the valuable support of Confindustria Moda, will bring together 22 Italian companies in total, 18 of which operate in the textile machinery sector and are listed below: Biancalani, BTSR, Color Service, Corino Macchine, DURST, Reggiani Macchine, Erhardt + Leimer, Ferraro, I.M.A., Itema, Lawer, M.C.S. Officina Meccanica, Mesdan, Monti – Mac, MSJK (MS Printing & JK Group), Pinter Caipo Italia, Salvade’, Savio Macchine Tessili.

Pallas brings high-performance, lower-impact textiles into healthcare interiors

Pallas Textiles will present its Giverny collection and broader healthcare portfolio at the Healthcare Design Conference + Expo in New Orleans. The collection translates nature-inspired colour and pattern into upholstery, panel and privacy-curtain applications intended for patient, waiting and care environments.

The company highlights performance and material choices alongside design. The Toile pattern is specified for very high abrasion exposure, while Nymphea incorporates SEAQUAL YARN and post-consumer recycled polyester and is designed for bleach cleanability. Pallas also points to material platforms including biodegradable vinyl and bio-attributed or biobased options across its portfolio.

The relevance for contract interiors lies in the combined specification challenge: healthcare fabrics have to support visual and tactile comfort while meeting demanding durability, cleaning and disclosure requirements. Pallas will show the collection from 17 to 20 October.
