INDA is warmly remembering CK Wong, a veteran of the nonwovens industry for more than five decades and long-time member of INDA’s Board of Directors and Executive Committee. Wong passed away on March 22, 2024 at the age of 86.

Wong recognized the importance of the emerging nonwovens industry in the early 1970s. He began his career in the 1980s as a marketing consultant and, one year later, Wong set up his corporate headquarters in Hong Kong to convert nonwoven roll goods into disposable medical and industrial protection products. Over the past 35 years, Wong’s business grew to include household, beauty salon, sports applications, and other value-added products.

In 1994 Wong’s company officially became U.S. Pacific Nonwovens Industry Limited. His business expanded with a new converting plant in Dongguan, China, and in 2007 he invested in an adjacent building to handle his growing business. In 2018 Wong’s business broadened to include manufacturing PLA nonwovens. In addition to converted products, Wong’s business provided sales, service, and training for nonwovens equipment.

Wong was an active member at INDA since the late 90s. He served as Vice Chair of Finance on the Board of Directors for many years before becoming an Appointee on INDA’s Executive Committee. Wong was instrumental in helping INDA set up partnerships with key contacts and associations in China. He was also the Honorable Chairman for the Guangdong Nonwovens Association (GDNA) and the China Nonwovens & Industrial Textiles Association (Spunbond Division).

INDA, the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry, has named experienced sales and business development professional Dan Noonan as its new Director of Memberships and Business Development. Noonan brings 20 years of experience leading sales teams across the U.S. at Localedge/Hearst Media Services.

Noonan will be responsible for enhancing the value of INDA membership and its industry supporting programs. He will work with staff, leadership, and members to identify and expand opportunities to enhance our programs, services and our relevance to the industry.

INDA, the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry, will join the ISSA – The Worldwide Cleaning Industry Association to host the 2024 Clean Advocacy Summit, April 10-11, in Washington, D.C. This advocacy and fly-in summit will offer participants the “inside scoop” on the key public policy issues facing their industry, including labor and supply chain challenges, cleaning product regulations, promoting healthy workplaces, ending period poverty, and more.

The summit will include networking opportunities and scheduled meetings with members of Congress and their staff to discuss key policies and legislation pertaining to the nonwovens industry. Attendees will have the chance to advocate for their businesses to support innovation, growth, and sustainability within the industry, while also highlighting their contributions to economic development and job creation.

INDA, the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry, announced that registration and tabletop exhibit reservations are open for the World of Wipes® (WOW) International Conference. WOW 2024 will take place June 17-20 at the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis, Minneapolis, MN. The theme for this year’s event is “Wipes Innovation & Sustainability – From Inception to Perfection.”

WOW will feature content in responsible sourcing, end-of-life solutions, and innovations in sustainability. Industry leaders, such as The Clorox Company, Kimberly-Clark Professional, and Nice-Pak, amongst others, will present their sustainability insights in formulations, industrial and institutional wipes, alternatives to plastics, production technologies, recycling options, and regulatory issues.

INDA, the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry, has released a new report, North American Nonwovens Industry Outlook, 2022-2027. This report is the twelfth edition detailing demand data for 2017 through 2022, with forecasts to 2027 and provides analysis across end-use markets through 2027.

It includes:

INDA, the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry, announced the conference program for Hygienix™ 2023, November 13-16 to be held at The Roosevelt New Orleans Hotel, New Orleans, LA.

The keynote speaker is Courtney Scharf, Chief Client Officer, Trend Hunter. Trend Hunter leverages big data, human researchers, and AI to identify consumer insights, and deep dive opportunities for the world’s most innovative companies, such as Unilever, Colgate-Palmolive, Georgia-Pacific, Kroger, Johnson & Johnson, Reckitt Benckiser, Samsung, and Bacardi. The Hygienix program will offer a hands-on workshop as well as two pre-conference webinars. Jim Robinson, Principal, Absorbent Hygiene Insights, LLC, will lead the in-person workshop on AHP Absorbent Hygiene Systems, Monday afternoon, November 13th. This workshop evaluates SAP absorption for different SAPs and participants have the opportunity to deconstruct and examine several hygiene products including infant, adult, and period care products to increase the understanding of these systems.

INDA, the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry, announced that registration is open for FiltXPO™ 2023, Oct. 10-12, 2023, Navy Pier, Chicago, Illinois USA. More than 130 exhibitors from the filtration supply chain will showcase their solutions, technologies, and innovations to over 1,200 global professionals. FiltXPO will also feature a three-day technical program covering new technology, products, and research.

Exhibit stand reservations have been brisk, exceeding the prior two editions of FiltXPO. “We are pleased to see the strong interest in exhibiting at FiltXPO. It speaks to the strength of the industry and that filtration products continue to evolve for clean air and water, as well as safer food, beverages, and biopharmaceuticals,” said Joe Tessari, Associate Director of Exhibit Sales.

An important part of the FiltXPO event is the 1.5-day Filter Media Training Course. Participants will learn about the physics of filtration, how nonwoven media is designed and used in air and liquid filtration, the latest market trends, which applications have unmet needs, as well as testing standards.

INDA, the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry, welcomes six new members to its 2023 Board of Directors. The Board of Directors are responsible for contributing to INDA’s strategic focus in support of the industry. They inform INDA’s policies and programs to ensure the association meets the needs of their more than 360 corporate members.

The Board is comprised of elected Board Officers. One-third of the entire Board is elected each year for a three-year term by a majority vote of INDA’s general membership. INDA’s Executive Committee, empowered to act on behalf of the Board between meetings, consists of the Board Officers plus four appointees.

The new board members are:

Ricardo Fasolo, Managing Vice President, Fitesa Inc.
Ricardo Fasolo is Managing Vice President for Fitesa in North America. He is responsible for all operations, sales, business development and P&L activities for the region. Mr. Fasolo has been with Fitesa since 2005. During this period, he has worked in various roles from leading the supply chain management in Latin America to Sales in the USA. Prior to joining Fitesa, Mr. Fasolo worked for a Tier 1 OEM supplier responsible for producing assisted steering gear systems.

Neil Johnson, President, AstenJohnson
Neil Johnson is President of AJ Nonwovens, a division of AstenJohnson Holdings, a multinational private technical textiles company. AJ Nonwovens is a newly branded entity that includes Foss Performance Materials, Eagle Nonwovens, and a new greenfield site in Waco, Texas. As President, Mr. Johnson has responsibility for all aspects of AstenJohnson’s Nonwovens business. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Johnson regularly updates the Board of Directors on matters of strategic significance and has a proven track record of leadership and broad business experience.
Mr. Johnson has spent 33 years with AstenJohnson in a variety of roles. These include VP of business development, VPHR, and General Management. A dual US / Canadian citizen, he has lived and worked in both countries and had global leadership responsibility. Outside of work, Mr. Johnson has had experience on several boards.  He has served as treasurer of a $10 million charitable foundation, served as President of the Board for a large non-profit in Charleston, SC and served on the Board of the Charleston youth hockey league. Mr. Johnson graduated from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada with a Bachelor of Commerce and an International MBA from the University of South Carolina.

Chris Roeder, Director – Strategy, Marketing & Innovation, Global Cellulose Fibers, International Paper
Chris Roeder joined International Paper (IP) in 1996 in Kansas City, MO, as an engineer for IP’s Consumer Packaging business. Over the next 20 years, Mr. Roeder held a variety of leadership roles with increasing responsibility in Beverage Packaging, Foodservice and Coated Paperboard, where he focused on business and product development as well as sales management. In 2016, Mr. Roeder was named Marketing Director for IP’s Containerboard business and was responsible for a number of key strategic initiatives.
In 2020, he was named Regional General Manager for IP’s North American Container business, and later that same year, he was named Director – Strategy, Marketing & Innovation for IP’s Global Cellulose Fibers business. In his current role, Mr. Roeder is responsible for collaborating across the business and enterprise to develop IP’s go-to-market strategy. He and his team work closely with the Sales team to drive successful innovations for IP’s customers.

Paul E. Rollin, Jr., Ph.D., Senior Principal – Global Hygiene, ExxonMobil Product Solutions Company
Paul Rollin earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia and his Ph.D. in Polymer Science from The University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. Dr. Rollin began his career with E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Co. developing “Flashspun” nonwoven products in the Tyvek® Business. He later transferred from Richmond, VA to Old Hickory, TN where he provided technical support to manufacturing, as well as led product development efforts for bi-component spunmelt fibers and fabrics.
For the past 11 years, Dr. Rollin has worked for ExxonMobil in Baytown, TX. During this time, his roles and responsibilities have included developing new products based on polyolefin resins, customer and application development. In 2018, he became the Global Nonwovens Team Lead at ExxonMobil. Dr. Rollin has several patents and has contributed to the nonwovens industry for more than 24 years.

Jodi Russell, Vice President R&D, Cleaning Innovation, Packaging & Sustainability, The Clorox Company
Jodi Russell has spent 25 years leading global innovation across multiple categories in the consumer-packaged goods industry. She began her career at P&G after graduating from the University of California, Berkeley with a B.S. Chemical Engineering, and has continued for 20 years at Clorox creating consumer-winning products in Cleaning, Foods, Litter, Trash, Natural Personal Care and Water Filtration. Ms. Russell is an innovation leader, with a proven track record of driving profitable growth, with current R&D responsibility for >$2B product portfolio including the company’s flagship Clorox Bleach™ and Clorox Disinfecting Wipes™ businesses. Ms. Russell excels in setting vision for R&D that leads to breakthroughs and in collaborating with industry partners to create leading edge technology for the Clorox global portfolio.

Julie Schertell, President and Chief Executive Officer, Mativ
Julie Schertell is Mativ’s President and Chief Executive Officer and serves on its Board of Directors. As the former Neenah Inc. Chief Executive Officer, she held numerous leadership positions within the company over the last 14 years, including Chief Operations Officer, Segment President of Technical Products and Fine Paper & Packaging and Vice President and General Manager of Fine Paper & Packaging.
Ms. Schertell began her career at Georgia-Pacific in 1992 as a Cost Analyst in a plant supporting Consumer Products. She served in several roles over her 16-year career there, all within the Consumer Products Division, including Vice President of Sales and Marketing Strategy, Vice President of Supply Chain, Director of Sales Operations and Director of Financial Planning & Analysis. Ms. Schertell graduated from Florida State University’s College of Business in 1991 with a BA in Accounting and received her MAcc degree from the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business in 1992.

• RISE® – Research, Innovation & Science for Engineered Fabrics Conference – Returns In-Person

Nonwovens innovators will convene in-person for RISE® – Research, Innovation & Science for Engineered Fabrics Conference – the industry’s premier conference on nonwovens science and technology, Sept. 27-28 at North Carolina State University in Raleigh.

The 12th edition of RISE returns live to Talley Student Union after being held virtually over the last two years. The event is co-organized by INDA and The Nonwovens Institute at North Carolina State University. Registration is now open at the RISE® website. https://www.riseconf.net/

Experts in product development, material science, and new technologies will come together for this insightful two-day conference focused on promising technology developments, future needs and market opportunities. Participants will have opportunities to exchange views on innovative nonwoven technologies and applications, furthering INDA’s strategic initiative to connect and convene the industry.

The 2022 RISE® program will focus on breaking developments in responsible sourcing of nonwoven inputs, realistic end-of-life options, and circularity opportunities in the world of nonwovens and engineered materials with thought leaders presenting on these cutting-edge topics.

Innovations that solve problems and advance the nonwovens industry will be recognized with the 2022 RISE® Innovation Award. The award will be presented Sept. 28 in the culmination of the event. INDA, the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry, announced the three finalists for the prestigious RISE® Innovation Award during the 11th edition of the Research, Innovation & Science for Engineered Fabrics Conference, (RISE®) to be held virtually September 28-30, 2021.  The award recognizes novel innovations in the nonwovens industry that creatively use next-level science and engineering principles to solve material challenges and expand the usage of nonwovens and engineered fabrics. These three finalists will present their innovative material science solutions as they compete for the RISE® Innovation Award.

Canopy Respirator
Canopy is an innovative respirator that is fully mechanical, non-electrostatic, with a filter designed for superior breathability while offering the wearer facial transparency. The breakthrough respirator features 5.5mm water column resistance at 85 liters (3 cubic feet) per minute, 2-way filtration, and a pleated filter that contains over 500 square centimeters of surface area. The patented Canopy respirator resists fluids, and eliminates fogging of eyeglasses.  

Evalith® 1000 Series
Johns Manville’s innovative Alpha Binder is a formaldehyde-free, high bio-carbon content, toxic-free binder formulation ideal for carpet mat applications. Alpha Binder eliminates monomer and polymer synthesis, uses a bio-degradable catalyst, and requires 70% less water in manufacturing. The resulting glass mats made of Alpha Binder are named “Evalith 1000” and reduces energy consumption during manufacturing by over 70% compared to alternative petroleum-based binders. Evalith 1000 was commercialized in North America in 2020.

Fiber Coated, Heat Sealable, Breathable, Hybrid Membrane, Fabric Protection
TiGUARD protective fabric is a construction of monolithic or hybrid imperious/moisture eliminating membranes with a surface covered with micro-fiber. This nonwoven product is a multi-layer all polyester fabric specifically for chemical and microbial protective fabrics, products, and garments. It is constructed of compatible heat seal-able materials which lend themselves to high-speed heat seal-able production and ultimately automated manufacture of garments without sewing. It is a combination of a densely flocked polyester fiber surface on polyester membrane supported by polyester scrim.
