Who defined what is “in accordance with the rules”? Was it done by you, the industry, or rather by your suppliers, for instance the geese farmers?

How the live-plucking according to the rules or the gathering of feathers in live birds during their moulting have to be carried out, is laid down e. g. in the European Convention for the Protection of Animals kept for Farming Purposes (see also: first publishing of the German translation of recommendations by the Standing Committee of the European Convention for the Protection of Animals kept for Farming Purposes on February 7th, 2000 in the Bundesanzeiger [German Federal Gazette], volume 52 No. 89a, issued on May 11th, 2000).

The improper collecting of feathers in live geese constitutes an act of cruelty to animals which is prohibited.

Are there other ways of collecting feathers and down, for instance from live ducks and geese?

Duck feathers and down stem from dead animals: As far as we know, duck down and feathers are exclusively collected after the slaughtering.

In geese, the gathering of feathers from the live animal, the so-called harvesting of feathers during the moulting season, is permitted by law.

There are clearly defined rules available in gathering feathers from live animals which are defined for instance in the European Convention for the Protection of Animals kept for Farming Purposes, the standard on the keeping of geese for the purpose of plucking and the national laws concerning animal welfare. According to that, feathers and down must not be plucked, only mature feathers and down which have already been shed from the animal body may be removed.

Is there an alternative to down and feathers being used as filling material?

Down and feathers are a unique natural resource. Since feathers and down offer a combination of naturalness, heat retention with minimal weight, active breathing and moisture transfer they are especially suited as filling material of bedding articles and clothing. As far as we are aware, there is no alternative material available which offers the same properties.

From an environmental point of view it is to the credit of down and feathers that no raw materials have to be used since both of them accrue as by-products of meat production.

On the television there were horrific scenes of geese being maltreated. Do you cover up such practices?

No, of course not. We condemn in the strongest possible terms such harvesting of feathers because it causes pain to the birds; they are being maltreated.

Is the feather bedding industry against animal welfare?

No, on the contrary: The feather bedding industry is rather benefiting from correct animal husbandry, even if the manufacturers neither keep animals nor produce meat and are not involved in the slaughtering process.

Birds that are kept in good condition and are well treated not only yield good meat, but good by-products as well in the form of high-quality filling material, which is very easy and cost-effective to process yet also saves resources as the processing of high-quality primary components may be organised, for instance, in a more energy-sav

In this case, it is a matter of the forbidden practice of live-plucking which our association strictly condemns.

Is the term “the gathering of feathers and down from the live animal during the moulting period” synonymous with the term “live-plucking“?

There is no difference on the level of technical terminology. The harvesting of feathers and down from the live animal, which should more accurately be called “harvesting” or “collecting” feathers and down, is usually carried out at the moment of the change of feathers, the moulting season, when a new generation of feathers has matured.

The moulting in birds is the system provided by nature to shed the feather coat.

The moulting in birds is the system provided by nature to shed the feather coat. The quill point is sticking very loosely in the feather follicle, because the nutrient supply of the feather has been interrupted due to hormonal reasons. This makes it possible to harvest the feathers from the live animal without inflicting any harm or hurting the goose or its skin. The technical literature on this topic has emphasized time and again that in general the sensitivity of poultry skin is considerably lower than the sensitivity of the skin of mammals.

On the level of technical terminology, the term “live-plucking” stands for the improper gathering of feathers in live geese.

If I avoid buying down-filled duvets, will I save geese from live-gathering of feathers?

Around 98% of down and feathers are obtained as a by-product after the birds have been slaughtered and thus will accrue regardless of whether there is a demand for bedding articles or not. Geese and ducks are being kept for the purpose of meat production. Down and feathers are just by-products.

Have the persons inflicting harm and injury on the animals been reported to the authorities in charge or punished?

When the VDFI (The Registered Association of the German Down and Feather Industry) obtained knowledge of the incident, which was allegedly filmed already in summer 2010, the association immediately filed a complaint. According to our information, those who had filmed the incident, that is to say the animal welfare organization Four Paws, did not file a complaint against the animal abuser.

According to our information, those who had filmed the incident, that is to say the animal welfare organization Four Paws, did not file a complaint against the animal abuser. This attitude is all the more regrettable since Four Paws is able to prove evidence of the procedure and documented the operations in a film.

Are you aware of the reasons for this?

It would appear that the animal welfare organisation did not want to file a complaint against him so that “the individual Hungarian farmer was not made the fall guy” (source: Kölner Stadt Anzeiger newspaper dated 20 December 2010). This response, which seemed to have satisfied the print and electronic media, has given our industry plenty of food for thought. If it was only one individual farmer who committed this crime, why didn’t they bring charges against him as the causer of the crime instead of allowing all Hungarian farmers and potential processors of down and feathers to be blamed en masse? Why is an animal welfare organisation protecting someone who is being cruel to animals? Are exclusively non-material objectives behind such behaviour? Until now, nobody has given us an answer to this question.
