Bedding articles filled with down and feathers may be cleaned in the washing machine. However, the washing machine should be big enough: For large duvets a minimum capacity of 6 to 7.5 kg is necessary.
For the following drying process it is also important that the dryer is big enough. During the drying process down and feathers get fluffy - pillows or blankets increase considerably in volume. If the drum is too small and the bedding cannot move freely in the dryer because of its volume, the ticking lies flat against the wall of the drum. By the incoming hot air the bedding articles could get singed. This causes the discoloration.
Commercial laundries and dry cleaners have equipment with sufficient volume. The bedding can move freely, thereby adequate ventilation and drying of the filler material are guaranteed.
