BIG at EuroGeo7 with geotextile fibres & woven fabrics

Beaulieu International Group invites EuroGeo7 attendees to discover geotextile solutions promoting greater sustainability for future civil engineering projects. Sustainability improvement is key to the long-term strategy of Beaulieu International Group, and it is committed to supporting the geotextile industry by targeting and accelerating change and communicating the sustainable performance of its products. The UN Sustainable Development Goals are integrated into its business and are the foundations of the new Route 2030 Sustainability Roadmap.


For manufacturers of nonwoven geotextiles, BFI’s high-tenacity HT8 staple fibres enable customers to achieve nonwovens with high mechanical performance at reduced fibre weight. The HT8 high tenacity fibres are designed in a way that customers can meet the industry durability standards for a longer service lifetime, supporting more sustainable design and resource reduction over time. BTT’s woven geotextiles are amongst the most sustainable in the industry and provide a wide range of functions, including separation, filtration, reinforcement and erosion control.

BFI and BTT have conducted lifecycle assessments to calculate their activities' carbon footprint and solutions and have received external recognition for their ongoing sustainability efforts. For example, in 2022, BFI was awarded a Silver EcoVadis sustainability rating, and BFI and BTT are proud recipients of the Voka Charter for Sustainable Entrepreneurship 2022.

AkzoNobel launches tool to drive bodyshop sustainability

Bodyshops can now take advantage of the vehicle refinish industry’s first repair calculator to measure, manage and reduce carbon emissions, which has been developed by AkzoNobel.

Designed to help customers improve their carbon footprint when using the company’s premium refinish products, the CO2eRepairCalculator* is part of a new initiative which aims to encourage bodyshops to become more sustainable.

The tool is the latest digital innovation from AkzoNobel focused on making a long-lasting difference to customers. It identifies the carbon levels associated with the painting and drying process – including the energy consumed – and is linked directly to the vehicle refinishing products being used. It also provides data relating to the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), therefore helping customers to understand where improvements can be made.

When using the tool, the emissions and energy consumed are calculated based on a controlled two-panel repair in a spray booth to Greenhouse Gas Protocol accounting standards. The results are presented in an online dashboard, which allows local energy prices to be factored in.

The launch means it will now be easier for bodyshops to take positive action in an effort to meet their sustainability and carbon reduction targets. This is becoming increasingly important, as insurance companies are putting greater pressure on preferred bodyshop partners to cut their emissions in line with supply chain ambitions that meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The CO2eRepairCalculator is currently being introduced in the UK market to Sikkens customers (with Lesonal to follow shortly). It will be rolled out across markets in Europe during the next few months.

*CO2e stands for carbon dioxide and equivalent gases. The tool measures carbon dioxide (CO2) and equivalent gases such as methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), which all fall under the term greenhouse gases (GHGs).

Mit ihren Textilveranstaltungen engagiert sich die Messe Frankfurt weltweit für die Sichtbarkeit der Nachhaltigen Entwicklungsziele. Dabei arbeitet sie zusammen mit dem Conscious Fashion and Lifestyle Network und dem UN Office for Partnerships. Am 2. Juni kam das internationale Netzwerk am Sitz der Vereinten Nationen zur ersten Jahrestagung zusammen.

Mit ihren Textilveranstaltungen engagiert sich die Messe Frankfurt weltweit für die Sichtbarkeit der Nachhaltigen Entwicklungsziele. Dabei arbeitet sie zusammen mit dem Conscious Fashion and Lifestyle Network und dem UN Office for Partnerships. Am 2. Bereits seit mehr als 15 Jahren macht die Messe Frankfurt auf ihren weltweiten Textilveranstaltungen unter dem Dach des Texpertise Network auf das Thema Nachhaltigkeit aufmerksam, gibt spezielle Messe-Guides heraus, initiiert Talkrunden, bietet geführte Touren zu Aussteller*innen mit entsprechendem Portfolio, erstellt Materialgallerien mit nachhaltigen Textilinnovationen und veranstaltet eigene Events, wie etwa die Neonyt, ausschließlich zu nachhaltiger Mode. Seit 2019 arbeitet die Messe Frankfurt mit dem Conscious Fashion and Lifestyle Network und dem UN Office for Partnerships zusammen, um zusätzlich die Nachhaltigen Entwicklungsziele (SDGs) auf ihren weltweiten Textilveranstaltungen bekannt zu machen und so einen Beitrag zu deren Erreichung in der Mode- und Textilindustrie zu leisten. Am 2. Juni kam das internationale Netzwerk aus Vertreter*innen der Mode- und Lifestyle-Branche, Medien, Regierungen und UN-Institutionen zu seiner ersten Jahrestagung am Hauptsitz der Vereinten Nationen in New York zusammen – mit dabei das Texpertise Network der Messe Frankfurt.
 
In Anbetracht der enormen Auswirkungen des Mode- und Lifestyle-Sektors auf Mensch und Umwelt gab das Jahrestreffen des Conscious Fashion and Lifestyle Network einen Überblick darüber, wie die Plattform ein transparentes, umfassendes und transformatives Engagement globaler Stakeholder fördert, um dringende Maßnahmen für Nachhaltigkeit voranzutreiben. Hauptziel des Netzwerks ist es, vorhandenes Fachwissen, Innovation, Technologie und Ressourcen für eine nachhaltige und ganzheitliche Erholung nach COVID-19 zu mobilisieren, wobei die Ziele für nachhaltige Entwicklung als Leitrahmen dienen.
 
In einer gemeinsamen Paneldiskussion sprachen Olaf Schmidt, Vice President Textiles & Textile Technologies bei der Messe Frankfurt, Sara Kozlowski, Vice President Education and Sustainability Initiatives beim Council of Fashion Designers of America, Sergio Fernández de Córdova, Vorsitzender der PVBLIC Foundation und Roberta Marcenaro, CEO der Strategieberatung IMARK und Strategin bei der POLIMODA über die Bedeutung von Partnerschaften und Zusammenarbeit bei der Erreichung der Nachhaltigen Entwicklungsziele. Moderiert wurde die Diskussion von Lucie Brigham, Chief of Office des United Nations Office for Partnerships und Mitgründerin des Conscious Fashion and Lifestyle Networks.

„Die Textilindustrie ist eine Branche mit starken Gegensätzen. Man findet hier sowohl traditionelle Handwerkskunst als auch Hightech mit vollständig digitalisierten und automatisierten Fertigungsprozessen. Gleichzeitig sind die Lieferketten so komplex und global vernetzt wie in kaum einer anderen Branche. Nachhaltigkeit kann nur im engen Zusammenspiel der richtigen Partner*innen erreicht werden“, so Olaf Schmidt während der Diskussion. „Als Messeveranstalter machen wir selbst die Textilindustrie zwar nicht unmittelbar nachhaltiger. Unsere zentralen Aufgaben im Texpertise Network der Messe Frankfurt sind jedoch andere: Wir bieten Plattformen zum Netzwerken und bringen auf weltweit rund 60 Textilveranstaltungen die richtigen Partner*innen zusammen. Wir schaffen Sichtbarkeit, indem wir der Branche eine Bühne bieten, um ihr Nachhaltigkeitsengagement ins Blickfeld zu rücken. Wir bieten Bildung und Wissenstransfer auf zahlreichen Konferenz- und Talkformaten rund um das Thema Nachhaltigkeit. Und wir gehen mit gutem Beispiel voran. Mit unseren weltweiten Aktionen zu den SDGs haben wir bislang schätzungsweise rund 9.200 Aussteller*innen und 195.500 Besucher*innen erreicht – auch in Zeiten der Pandemie.“

Indorama Ventures launches the industry's first report on contributions to UN Sustainable Development Goals

Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited (IVL), a world-class sustainable chemical company, introduced the first independent Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Report developed by the private sector in Thailand. The report provides details of the company’s sustainability strategy, aligned with the United Nation’s SDGs.

Renaud Meyer, UN Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative to Thailand, said, “We support countries in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals through integrated solutions. Achieving the goals at global level requires the partnership of governments, private sector, civil society and citizens alike to make sure we leave a better planet for future generations. The Sustainable Development Goals Report developed by the private sector is one way to urge more constructive collaboration among sectors.”

IVL believes it can have the greatest impact on these areas while also growing its business and bringing about constructive change. Activities in these five areas help IVL align with 13 of the 17 SDGs, totaling 39 targets.

Since 2019, Messe Frankfurt has been working with the Conscious Fashion Campaign and United Nations Office for Partnerships as part of the Texpertise Network and supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The goals will be presented gradually at global textile events in order to highlight the most pressing challenges facing the textile and fashion industry worldwide.

Industry Empowerment: antimicrobial technologies and licensing in the home textile sector

Growing awareness of health and hygiene has increased the demand for antimicrobial and other functional textiles. Seminars hosted by the Chinese Industry Association for Antimicrobial Materials & Products will further discuss the increasing prominence of these textiles, as well as how the adoption of new antimicrobial textile technologies is expected to evolve in the future. In addition, experts will share the new trends of licensing and IP with case studies for the furniture companies and fabric brands.

The China Home Textiles Trend Area will feature the research of the China Home Textile Association, The Department of Home Textile Trend Research and Promotion and Concept & Style Fashion Project Group Italy who shared their knowledge, inspirations and exchanged their visions of trend evolutions considering consumer demand, retail expertise, the contract market and new technologies.

Intertextile Shanghai Home Textiles – Autumn Edition 2021 will be held concurrently with Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics – Autumn Edition, Yarn Expo Autumn, PH Value and CHIC at the National Exhibition and Convention Center. Marabu to be climate neutral from July 2021

Marabu is one of the first ink manufacturers to achieve climate neutrality. All Marabu Business Units will, where possible, make a specific contribution to achieve the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with PROJECT GREEN and therefore participate in the Green Deal.

"We are safeguarding the future of the next generations and are proud that we have managed to be a climate neutral company from July 2021 with the Tamm and Bietigheim sites. All our products, whether printing inks or creative colours, are climate neutral, too," explains York Boeder, CEO Executive Committee. "Our so-called PROJECT GREEN combines all measures that are taking us on our journey to climate neutrality. Climate protection is a particular concern for us, to which we have made a binding commitment within the scope of an extensive sustainability strategy. In accordance with our Marabu Green Deal, we avoid and reduce emissions wherever possible, e. g. by using green electricity, energy-saving schemes, mobility concepts or environmentally friendly materials. We offset all unavoidable CO2 emissions by supporting internationally certified climate protection projects. We are continually implementing measures to improve our carbon footprint and update them annually to make their success measurable. We have therefore set ourselves the active goal of reducing our CO2 emissions by another 25 % by 2030."

For decades, Marabu has invested in the research and development of safe production processes, environmentally friendly products, and clean technologies with the aim of preserving the natural environment. Marabu has worked with Climate Partner to analyse all the CO2 emissions from the sites in Tamm and Bietigheim and determine its carbon footprint. Including all product-related factors such as raw materials and logistics, Marabu currently generates approx. 18,500 tons of unavoidable CO2 emissions. This value is the positive result of a number of climate-friendly measures pursued by Marabu, such as the early switch to green electricity in 2007.

Marabu's main activities to avoid and reduce CO2 emissions:

  • Energy - Switching to green electricity from hydropower
  • Mobility - Migration of the company's vehicles to electric and hybrid cars as well as in e-charging stations
  • Production - Use of renewable energies and resource-efficient production processes
  • Raw materials - Replacing critical substances with environmentally friendly alternatives for new and existing products
  • Transporting - Climate-neutral freight carriers and lower-emission transport methods like shipping or road transport replace air freight wherever possible
  • Product technology - Modern, low-emission products

Die 17 Call-to-Actions, die von allen UN-Mitgliedsstaaten als nachhaltige Entwicklungsziele verabschiedet wurden, bieten den Rahmen für eine hochklassige Agenda.

Agenda mit klarem Fokus auf nachhaltige Zukunft der Mode
In Panels wirft der Summit einen Blick auf den Status quo der weltweiten Modeindustrie. Designer*innen schildern ihre Erfahrungen in Bezug auf Nachhaltigkeit in der Mode und legen offen, welchen Einfluss das Business auf soziale, politische und ökologische Themen hat. Internationale Expert*innen diskutieren über die Rolle der Mode auf dem Weg zum Klimagipfel COP26 und junge Klimaaktivist*innen berichten über den Fortschritt ihrer Bewegung, die einen sozialen und politischen Wandel in Gang gesetzt hat. Darüber hinaus stehen Themen wie Geschlechtergleichheit, sauberes Wasser, Klimaschutz sowie soziale Gerechtigkeit und ihre Bedeutung für eine zukunftsweisende Modebranche auf dem Programm.

Speaker*innen aus Mode, Politik, Wissenschaft und Klimaschutzbewegungen
Zu den Speaker*innen zählen angesehene Vertreter*innen der Design- und Modebranche, wie etwa Christiane Arp (Fashion Council Germany), Caroline Rush (British Fashion Council), Claudio Marenzi (Pitti Uomo), Lucilla Booyzen (South African Fashion Week), Nadja Swarovski (Swarovski Foundation), Patrick McDowell (Patrick McDowell und Pinko), Steven Kolb (Council of Fashion Designers of America) und Svein Rasmussen (Somwr). Daneben betreten hochrangige Repräsentant*innen der United Nations, Vertreter*innen aus Politik und Wissenschaft sowie Klimaaktivist*innen das Podium.

Asahi Kasei's ongoing commitment to strengthen the Bemberg™ fibre value chain from raw materials to final products textile industry and support local people, institutes, and the environment, has been recognized by the United Nations BCtA programme, who has renewed its membership for India. Starting from the company and including the material, Bemberg™ integrates new generations of values such as innovation and responsibility together with design. This important breakthrough showcases how the smart fibre is globally recognized for its innovation, responsibility and ability to deliver high-quality and sustainable ingredients at the same time committed to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Objectives of this initiative include:

Objectives of this initiative include:  

  • By 2023, enhance skills of 1,671 employees in the Bemberg fiber industry and advance production efficiency of 55 small to medium scale de-linting, weaving and dyeing manufacturers, through employee training, capital investment and technical support.
  • By 2023, develop capacity of 575 young people, especially women, who will lead the Indian textile industry, by providing vocational training opportunities and institutional support for the three schools.
  • By 2023 cumulative amount of 40,000m3/day textile dyeing effluent will be treated and recycled back to their own textile dyeing process, which is equivalent to saving daily water access to natural water resources for approx. 25,000 households.

To sustain, erhalten und tragfähig handeln, das steckt schon in ihrem Namen: Die Neonyt-Konferenz Fashionsustain füllt vom 6. bis 8. Juli 2021 drei Tage des digitalen FFW Studio-Programms mit stringent nachhaltigem Innovationsinput aus der internationalen Textil- und Modeindustrie. Kooperation ist dabei nicht nur ein Buzzword, vielmehr der Schlüssel zum Erfolg. Dem auch die Neonyt-Partner*innen Common Objective, Häuser der Mode, Hessnatur und Oeko-Tex Rechnung tragen.

Noch zehn Jahre um die 17 Nachhaltigkeitsziele (SDGs) der Vereinten Nationen (UN) zu erreichen. Die internationale Textil- und Modeindustrie strebt zudem Klimaneutralität über die gesamte Wertschöpfungskette hinweg bis 2050 an. Schritte wie die Reduzierung von CO2-Ausstößen in der Produktion, die Auswahl klimafreundlicher Materialien sowie Geschäftsmodelle im Bereich der Kreislaufwirtschaft sind ausschlaggebend für ein zukunftsfähiges Fashion-Business.

Einen Weg, den die Akteur*innen der internationalen Modebranche nur gemeinsam bewältigen können. Die internationale Neonyt-Konferenz Fashionsustain findet im Rahmen der digitalen Frankfurt Fashion Week Preview, dem FFW Studio, diesen Sommer ausschließlich als Live-Streaming statt. Vom 6. bis 8. Juli 2021 sprechen Fashion-Professionals der nachhaltigen und konventionellen Modebranche unter anderem über die Themenkomplexe Sustainability, Digitisation, Innovation, Circularity und Retail. SDG 17: Partnerschaften zur Erreichung der Nachhaltigkeitsziele
Globale und lokale Partnerschaften, die zusammenhalten und sich gegenseitig unterstützen, treiben eine nachhaltige Entwicklung voran. SDG 17 wird gestützt von der Zusammenarbeit, dem respektvollen Umgang mit Mensch und Natur sowie den gemeinsam getragenen Werten zur Erreichung der Nachhaltigkeitsziele. Die Spannweite reicht dabei von Unternehmen, die erst am Anfang der grünen Revolution stehen bis hin zu Brands und Associations, die den Wandel bereits vollzogen oder von Beginn an nachhaltiges und faires Business durchgesetzt haben. Neonyt geht regelmäßig Kooperationen ein, um den größtmöglichen Positiv-Impact in der Textil- und Modeindustrie zu erzielen. Ab Sommer 2021 als Partner*in neu dabei: Häuser der Mode, eine B2B-Plattform mit festen Mode-Showrooms im Rhein-Main-Gebiet und dem Ziel, einen Beitrag zu leisten, die Fashion-Branche nachhaltiger zu gestalten.

"We have been in conversation with each other for a significant time and now finally things have fallen into place and we are able to move forward on more concrete terms", says Andreas Andrén and continues: "Naturally it is extremely positive for us that Superdry has so ambitiously set and clear sustainability goals. B.I.G. Yarns announces its latest development, EqoCycle, a fully recyclable PA6 yarn with 75% recycled content, offering the same high-quality performance of virgin PA6 yarn. The new recycled yarn mainly based on post-industrial waste supports contract, automotive and residential carpet manufacturers with a drop-in circular solution to reduce the ecological footprint of their end products.

B.I.G. Yarns announces its latest development, EqoCycle, a fully recyclable PA6 yarn with 75% recycled content, offering the same high-quality performance of virgin PA6 yarn. The new recycled yarn mainly based on post-industrial waste supports contract, automotive and residential carpet manufacturers with a drop-in circular solution to reduce the ecological footprint of their end products.

EqoCycle is made with recycled granulates derived from pre-consumer recycled and regenerated PA6, certified by Control Union for Global Recycled Standard (GRS) Certification. The use of less virgin materials implicates a decrease of fossil fuels by 58% and a 27% decrease in energy consumption. On top, EqoCycle yarns allow a reduction of 37% of CO₂ eq./kg compared to the fossil based yarns. The environmental impacts of EqoCycle with 75% recycled content were calculated through an LCA analysis, verified according to ISO 14025 and EN 15804+A1 and published in an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD registration number S-P-02415).

Customers have the assurance that for every 1.000 tons of EqoCycle yarn, 13,562 barrels of oil are saved and 2.700 tons of CO₂ emission are reduced, compared to PA6 traditionally made from virgin materials.

Emmanuel Colchen, General Manager Yarns Division, comments: “EqoCycle is a perfect example of how higher resource efficiency in our industry can promote greater circularity in our customers’ industries. Minimizing waste, re-using materials, and saving energy and carbon emissions in production, it provides our customers and carpet brands with a new sustainable alternative that won’t compromise their end-product performance but will support their increasing focus on CO₂ reduction and global warming potential. All part of our wider commitment to encourage decoupling from the need for only virgin feedstocks and moving towards a circular economy for yarns and soft flooring industries.”

EqoCycle is the latest circular solution in B.I.G. Yarns’ PA6 portfolio, joining EqoBalance PA6, based on biomass balance renewable resources, which offers up to 75% CO₂ reduction.
