Solvay announces Board of Directors for standalone SYENSQO

Solvay announced the future Board of Directors of SYENSQO, effective upon completion of the planned separation of Solvay into two companies – SOLVAY and SYENSQO – which is on track to be completed in December 2023.

SYENSQO’s Board will be composed of 10 members, including 6 independent members, 3 members representing the reference shareholder, Solvac, and the company CEO. They have deep expertise in specialty industries, international business operations, risk management, corporate governance, finance and clean technology.

They have deep expertise in specialty industries, international business operations, risk management, corporate governance, finance and clean technology.

The following individuals will serve on the SYENSQO Board of Directors:
Rosemary Thorne will serve as independent Director and Chair of the SYENSQO Board, as well as Chair of the Board’s Finance Committee. She is currently an Independent Director on the Solvay Board of Directors, appointed in 2014, and Chair of the Board’s Audit Committee. She is also an Independent Director on the Board of Merrill Lynch International (UK), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bank of America, serving as Chair of the Audit Committee. Ms. Thorne has decades of financial leadership experience across a wide range of industries. She previously served as Chief Financial Officer at J. Sainsbury, the UK’s largest supermarket chain at the time; Bradford & Bingley; and Ladbrokes. Ms. Thorne previously sat as an Independent Director on the Boards of Royal Mail Group, Cadbury Schweppes, Santander UK, First Global Trust Bank and Smurfit Kappa Group.

Dr. Ilham Kadri will serve as Chief Executive Officer and member of the Board of Directors of SYENSQO. She is currently CEO and President of the Executive Committee at Solvay. Ms. Kadri has successfully led the turnaround of Solvay, delivering double-digit EBITDA growth and 18 consecutive quarters of positive free cash flow, deleveraging the balance sheet and promoting superior people engagement. She is an independent Board member at A.O. Smith and L’Oréal. She is active in non-profit organizations, as Chair of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), member of the steering committee of the European Round Table of Industrialists (ERT) as well as a permanent member of the World Economic Forum’s International Business Council (WEF). Ms. Kadri has extensive leadership experience across a variety of industries in four continents and with leading industrial multinationals, including Shell, UCB, Huntsman, Dow, Sealed Air. Prior to Solvay, she was CEO and President of Diversey in the USA, led the company’s return to profitability and resulting spin off and divestiture to Bain Capital. She founded two non-Profit foundations: the Solvay Solidarity Fund in Belgium in 2020 which supported more than 7000 families affected by Covid-19 and natural disasters; and founded the ISSA Hygieia Network in 2015 in the USA, to help women in the cleaning industry. She received two Doctor Honoris Clausa from EWHA University in Korea and Université de Namur in Belgium.

Julian Waldron will serve as independent Director and Chair of the Audit Committee. He currently serves as Deputy Executive Chairman of privately-held Albea Group, a global beauty and personal care packaging company which operates 35 facilities in Europe, Asia and the Americas. Mr. Waldron has held senior leadership roles at several leading listed companies in the industrial, technology and services sectors and brings a wealth of expertise in finance and business operations. Prior to joining Albea in 2022, he was Chief Financial Officer of Suez for three years after serving as Chief Financial Officer and subsequently Chief Operating Officer of Technip. He started his career at UBS Warburg where he spent 14 years. Mr. Waldron also served as an independent Board member and Chairman of finance, risk and investments at Carbon Clean, a privately-owned carbon capture company dedicated to achieving net zero.

Heike Van de Kerkhof will serve as independent Director and Chair of the Nomination Committee. She currently sits on the Board of OCI N.V.. Ms. Van de Kerkhof brings more than 30 years of experience in the chemicals, oil & gas and materials industries, having served in numerous leadership roles around the globe. From 2020 to 2023, she was Chief Executive Officer of Archroma Management, a global specialty chemicals company. During her tenure, she successfully completed the transformational acquisition of Huntsman’s Textile Effects business. Prior to her role at Archroma, Ms. Van de Kerkhof served as Vice President of Lubricants, Western Hemisphere at BP, and held positions at Castrol, The Chemours Company, and Neste Corporation. She also held many leading roles within DuPont over 18 years.

Matti Lievonen will serve as independent Director and Chair of the Compensation Committee. He is currently an independent director on the Solvay Board, appointed in 2017. Mr. Lievonen is a proven executive in the energy, forestry, power and automation industries with an extensive track record of leading businesses through climate transition. For over ten years until 2018, he served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Neste Corporation, a global leader in next-generation renewable fuels and chemicals. During his time at Neste, Mr. Lievonen successfully promoted the development of clean fuels as well as Finland’s bioeconomy strategy in advancing renewable transportation fuels. He has also been involved with organizations such as Fortum Board, SSAB, Nynäs AB, Ilmarinen, and the HE Finnish Fair Foundation. Until 2021, Mr. Lievonen was also Chairman of the Board of Directors at Fortum. He has been recognized for his admirable leadership and expertise, and in 2016 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Technology by the Aalto University Schools of Technology.

Dr. Françoise de Viron will serve as non-independent Director, Chair of the ESG Committee and Vice-Chair of the Board. She is currently a director of the Solvay Board, appointed in 2013. Ms. de Viron is a regarded academic leader and has extensive experience in innovation, R&D and qualitative research. She is a Professor Emeritus at the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences and Louvain School of Management at UCLouvain in Belgium where she has been an Academic Member of various groups at UCLouvain. Ms. de Viron previously served as the president of AISBL EUCEN – the European Universities Continuing Education Network. Prior to her university position, from 1985 to 2000, she was in charge of developing Artificial Intelligence applications at Tractebel S.A. (now Tractebel-Engie).

Roeland Baan will serve as independent Director. He currently serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of Topsoe, a privately-held leading provider of clean energy and petrochemical technologies. He is also Chairman of the Supervisory Board of SBM Offshore NV. Roeland Baan has extensive experience in supply chain management, M&A, business development and operations management. Prior to joining Topsoe in 2020, he was President and CEO of Outokumpu and has held several executive roles at global organizations such as Aleris International, ArcelorMittal and SHV NV. He spent over 16 years in various roles across the globe at Shell, living in South America, in Africa and in the United Kingdom.

Edouard Janssen will serve as non-independent Director. He is currently a Director on the Solvay Board, appointed in 2021. Earlier this year, he was appointed Chief Financial Officer of D’Ieteren Group, a European leader in automotive distribution services. Mr. Janssen is also a Board member of privately-held Financière de Tubize and Union Financière Boël, as well as Co-Founder and Chair of Trusted Family. Mr. Janssen is active in academics, as Vice-Chair of the International Advisory Board of the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management and on the advisory board of the INSEAD HGIBS. He brings expertise in finance, strategy, entrepreneurship, business management, planning and marketing. He has served as Solvay’s Vice President in strategy and M&A between 2019 and 2021, and prior to that, he was the US-based General Manager for North- and Latin America at Solvay’s Aroma Performance Global Business Unit.
 
Dr. Mary Meaney will serve as non-independent Director. She is currently a member of the Board of Directors and of the Audit Committee of Groupe Bruxelles Lambert SA. She also sits on the Board of Directors and the Remuneration Committee of Beamery, the privately-held talent management company. She is a member of the Board of Directors and of the Finance Committee of Imperial College, London.Dr. Meaney will bring expertise in Strategy, M&A, and change management, which she acquired over a 24-year career at McKinsey. She was a Senior Partner, served on the McKinsey Shareholders Council and led McKinsey’s global Organization practice.

Nadine Leslie will serve as independent Director and is based in the United States of America. She is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Provident Financial Services , as well as a Non-Executive Director of Seven Seas Water Corporation, a water and wastewater treatment multinational company. She also sits on the Board of Trustees of Hackensack Meridian Health Network and is active as strategic consultant for civil engineering firm T&M Associates. Over a 22-year career at Suez, Ms. Leslie held several leadership positions, the last one being Chief Executive Officer of Suez North America, until 2022. Previously she served as Executive Vice President Health & Safety.

Magnus Håkansson as new CEO of Renewcell

The Board of Renewcell has appointed Magnus Håkansson as the new acting CEO. Magnus has experience from leading roles in the retail and fashion sector and from leadership in a listed environment. On Monday, October 16, he started his position, replacing Patrik Lundström, who has been the company's CEO since 2019.

Magnus Håkansson has a degree in economics from the Stockholm School of Economics and an MBA from MIT Sloan School of Management. He started his career as a management consultant at McKinsey and has since held several leading roles in global growth companies in the retail sector, as well as the pulp industry, including many years with experience from a listed environment. He most recently came from a role as CEO of MediaMarkt Sweden.

Karine Calvet and Pierre-Yves Roussel join Lectra’s Board of Directors

Lectra’s Annual Shareholders’ Meeting held on April 28 appointed two new Directors, Karine Calvet and Pierre-Yves Roussel for a four-year term. They both will become members of the Strategic Committee, replacing Bernard Jourdan, Lead Director, and Anne Binder. Karine Calvet also becomes a member of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Committee.

With its new strategic roadmap for 2023-2025, the Group aims to use its expansion – mainly due to the acquisition of Gerber in June 2021 – to accelerate its growth, significantly increase the share of SaaS in its sales, and seize opportunities for external growth. Supported by the commitment of its staff and recognized by its customers, Lectra will also be at the forefront of a more sustainable future.

Karine Calvet is Vice-President EMEA responsible for Partners at AVEVA, a subsidiary of Schneider Electric. She began her career at CGI in 1993 and has spent most of it in IT: sixteen years in services companies, seven years in telecommunications, and six years in software. She has had leadership roles in telecommunications environments for leading global companies (CGI, Capgemini, Alcatel-Lucent, Verizon, Microsoft and currently Schneider-Aveva), focusing on digital transformation. Karine Calvet served as Head of Industry at Capgemini, then managed worldwide teams at Alcatel-Lucent as Vice-President, Eastern Europe then at Verizon as Managing Director. Her time at Microsoft strengthened her software expertise, her direct and indirect channels skills, and her experience in IT services. In the last two years, as Vice-President, Southern Europe then Vice-President, Partners and Alliances at Schneider-Aveva, Karine Calvet has worked closely with industrial companies to help them meet the challenges of operational efficiency, safety, cost management, sustainability and decarbonization by taking advantage of digitalization.

Pierre-Yves Roussel has been CEO of leading US fashion label Tory Burch since January 2019. He began his career in investment banking with HSBC in Brussels, then at Morgan Stanley in London. In 1990, he joined management consulting firm McKinsey & Company in France, where he led numerous consultancy assignments in the fashion, luxury, distribution and media sectors in Europe and Asia. In 1998, he was elected Partner then, in 2004, Global Senior Partner (Director). In 2004, he joined the LVMH Group Executive Committee as Executive Vice-President, Strategy and Operations, reporting directly to Bernard Arnault. In 2006, he was appointed Chairman and CEO of LVMH Fashion Group, one of the LVMH Group’s five branches of operational activity. From 2006 to 2018, he was Chairman of the Board of the brands Céline, Givenchy, Loewe, Kenzo, Pucci, Rossimoda, Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, Berluti, JW Anderson and Nicolas Kirkwood. He has also been a member on several prestigious fashion juries including Andam, CFDA Fashion Incubator, and the LVMH Fashion Prize. He was a member of the management committee of the Chambre Syndicale de la Mode et de la Couture from 2010 to 2018. In 2018, he left the LVMH Group to take up the post of CEO – based in New York – of the company Tory Burch. Founded by his wife in 2004, the private family-run company has more than 350 stores worldwide, 13 retail websites, and nearly 5,000 employees.

Carbios hosted the first PET Biorecycling Summit from 7 to 8 December 2022 in Paris. The event attracted over 100 international participants from the scientific, academic, and industrial worlds to exchange on the advances in the field of biological recycling, and how to bring these innovations for a circular economy to market.

Carbios hosted the first PET Biorecycling Summit from 7 to 8 December 2022 in Paris. The event attracted over 100 international participants from the scientific, academic, and industrial worlds to exchange on the advances in the field of biological recycling, and how to bring these innovations for a circular economy to market.

The two-day conference gathered scientists from various academic institutions to share their latest research on PET enzymatic depolymerization.  Bertrand Piccard, Initiator and Chairman of the Solar Impulse Foundation[1], joined as the Keynote Speaker for the last session focused on PET circularity, and praised Carbios’ contribution to reducing plastic pollution. The Summit concluded with a visit of Carbios’ demonstration plant in Clermont-Ferrand. The demonstration plant was inaugurated in September 2021 and brings Carbios’ technology one step closer to industrialization. Following the demonstration plant’s success, Carbios is on track to build and operate the world’s first industrial-scale enzymatic PET recycling plant (with a processing capacity of 50.000 tons of PET waste per year) in France (Longlaville) by 2025[2], and to start licensing its technology throughout the world.

In dem einzigen McKinsey Digital Capability Center in Deutschland, das zu einem globalen Netzwerk von Fortbildungszentren zwischen Atlanta und Peking gehört, haben seit 2017 mehr als 150 Unternehmen und über 3.200 Teilnehmende trainiert. „Die Nachfrage im Markt ist groß, wachsende Qualifizierungslücken zu schließen. Es gilt für Fertigungsunternehmen, mit Hilfe der Digitalisierung nicht nur, die Produktivität zu erhöhen, sondern durch verbesserte Prozesse auch den Anforderungen der CO2-Reduzierung zu begegnen“, begründet Fabian Alexander Müller vom Leitungsteam der Digital Capability Center Europe den Ausbau. Er ist überzeugt, dass es Unternehmen mithilfe von immersiven Lernerfahrungen gelingen kann, die Barrieren für die digitale Transformation aufzubrechen. „Teams üben bei uns den Umgang mit modernsten Technologien ein, zum Beispiel für die Investitionsplanung in ihren Unternehmen, die Beschaffung, das Lieferketten-Management oder die Produktentwicklung“, sagt der Experte für Transformations- und Reskilling-Prozesse.

Herzstück der erweiterten Kapazitäten im Digital Capability Center in Aachen bildet die neue „Model Factory in a Box“, ein komplett ausgestattetes zweites immersives Shopfloor-Modell der neuesten Generation. Am Beispiel einer Prozessfertigung von Limonade können Teilnehmende mit modernster Sensorik, Robotik oder Advanced Analytics experimentieren. Sie erarbeiten sich hier in einer freien Lernumgebung außerhalb ihrer gewohnten Produktionsanlage eine frische Perspektive. In den Gruppenräumen lassen sie sich von Expert:innen zunächst zu neuen Werkzeugen und Techniken schulen, die sie anschließend direkt in der Modellfabrik anwenden. Das immersive Trainingskonzept hilft ihnen, unwirtschaftliche Prozesse in der heimischen Fertigung aufzuspüren und umzugestalten. „In unserer Modellfabrik erfahren Teilnehmende die Auswirkungen einer Veränderung im Arbeitsprozess unmittelbar“, erläutert Müller. Weiterer Vorteil der Produktionsanlage im Miniaturformat: Sie kann innerhalb von höchstens einer Woche zusammengepackt und an einen beliebigen Standort verlegt werden. Unternehmen können die Einheit zu Trainingszwecken in der eigenen Werkhalle aufstellen.

McKinsey: An Bekleidung und Schuhen wird gespart

Laut einer aktuellen McKinsey-Umfrage bereiten die rasch steigenden Preise den Konsument:innen zurzeit die größte Sorge, die Corona-Pandemie spielt kaum noch eine Rolle. Rund 48% der Befragten geben an, ihre größte Sorge sei aktuell die Inflation - ein deutlicher Zuwachs gegenüber dem April.
 
„Die Sorge der Konsumenten vor weiteren Preissteigerungen verfestigt sich“, sagt der McKinsey-Partner Marcus Jacob. Die Angst vor dem Ukraine-Krieg ist dagegen in den vergangenen Monaten geringer geworden. Hatte noch im April jeder dritte Befragte (34%) die Invasion der Ukraine als größte Sorge bezeichnet, so tat dies im Juni nur noch jeder Vierte (24%). Trotz der aktuell hohen Infektionszahlen nannten nur 4% die Corona-Pandemie als größte Sorge.

Die steigenden Preise haben der Umfrage zufolge bereits spürbare Auswirkungen auf den Alltag vieler Menschen. „Die große Mehrheit - 73% - hat das Einkaufsverhalten bereits verändert, um zu sparen“, so Marcus Jacob. So landen häufiger die Eigenmarken der Handelsketten in den Einkaufswagen. Statt im Supermarkt oder im Fachgeschäft wird häufiger beim Discounter eingekauft. „Dieser Trend beschleunigt sich“.

Während mehr Geld für Benzin und Lebensmittel ausgegeben werden muss, wird außerdem bei nicht essentiellen Ausgaben wie beispielsweise Bekleidung, Schuhen, aber auch Möbel oder Elektronik gespart. 59% der Befragten geben an, sie würden inzwischen genauer auf den eigenen Energieverbrauch achten.

McKinsey Studie: Aus 20% des Textilabfalls könnte neue Kleidung werden

  • Weniger als 1% Textilmüll wird derzeit zu neuer Kleidung recycelt
  • 7,5 Millionen Tonnen Textilmüll fallen jährlich in Europa an
  • Nur 30-35% des Textilmülls werden getrennt gesammelt

Mehr als 15 Kilogramm Textilmüll produziert jeder Mensch in Europa im Durchschnitt pro Jahr, 2030 könnten es bereits über 20 Kilogramm pro Kopf sein. Der größte Anteil (85%) des Abfalls wird durch die privaten Haushalte verursacht: aus ihrer Kleidung und Heimtextilien. Mehr als 15 Kilogramm Textilmüll produziert jeder Mensch in Europa im Durchschnitt pro Jahr, 2030 könnten es bereits über 20 Kilogramm pro Kopf sein. Der größte Anteil (85%) des Abfalls wird durch die privaten Haushalte verursacht: aus ihrer Kleidung und Heimtextilien. Weniger als 1% dieses Mülls wird derzeit in der EU-27 und der Schweiz zu neuen Textilprodukten recycelt. Mehr als 65% landen ohne Umwege direkt in der Müllverbrennung oder auf der Mülldeponie.

„Dabei könnten, wenn das volle technische Recyclingpotenzial genutzt und mehr Textilien gesammelt würden, bereits im Jahr 2030 zwischen 18 und 26 Prozent des Textilmülls für die Herstellung von neuen Kleidungsstücken wiederverwertet werden“, sagt Karl-Hendrik Magnus, Senior Partner und Leiter der Modeindustrieberatung bei McKinsey in Deutschland. „Ein skaliertes Textilrecycling würde nicht nur vier Millionen Tonnen CO2 einsparen, sondern auch einen profitablen Wirtschaftszweig mit 15.000 Jobs in Europa schaffen.“ Das sind Ergebnisse der Studie „Scaling textile recycling in Europe – turning waste into value“ von McKinsey & Company, für die Szenarien berechnet wurden, wie sich das Textilmüllvolumen sowie Sammel- und Recyclingraten bis 2030 entwickeln können.

Höhere Sammelrate von Kleidung entscheidend für mehr Recycling
Derzeit wird etwa ein Drittel der benutzten Kleidung gesammelt und wiederverwendet: entweder als Second-Hand-Mode, als grob recyceltes Textilprodukt wie Lappen und weniger als 1% als recycelte Textilfasern für neue Mode. Diese Sammelrate könnte bis 2030 auf 50-80% gesteigert werden. Entsprechend könnte auch die Kreislaufwirtschaft, die aus Textilabfall neue Fasern für Mode produziert, auf 18-26% skaliert werden. Heute ist es weniger als 1%. „Dieses so genannte Fiber-to-fiber-Recycling, bei dem aus Textilfasern neue Fasern für Mode hergestellt werden, stellt die nachhaltigste Möglichkeit dar, um aus Müll etwas Neues mit Wert zu generieren“, erklärt Jonatan Janmark, Co-Autor der Studie und Partner im Stockholmer Büro von McKinsey. Gleichzeitig bietet diese Kreislaufwirtschaft enormes finanzielles Potenzial mit sechs bis acht Milliarden Euro Umsatz als Marktgröße und möglichen jährlichen Renditen von 20-25% für die Recyclingindustrie.

Möglich wird diese Entwicklung hin zur Kreislaufwirtschaft durch neue Technologien, wie mechanisches Recycling von Baumwolle, das bereits recht etabliert ist, die innovative Verarbeitung zu Viskosefasern sowie chemisches Recycling für die Wiederverwertung von Polyester, was aktuell im Teststadium ist. Allerdings steht das Sammeln und die Aufbereitung der Altbekleidung und -textilien durch fragmentierte, kleinteilige Strukturen und noch meist manuelle Arbeitsvorgänge immer noch vor großen Herausforderungen.  Kleidungsabfälle müssen nach Qualitätskriterien sortiert, Knöpfe und Reißverschlüsse entfernt und Faserzusammensetzungen eindeutig identifiziert werden. Viele Produkte aus Mischfasern stellen noch ein ungelöstes Problem für Fiber-to-fiber-Recycling dar.

Investitionen für Skalierung nötig
Um das volle Potenzial des Textilrecyclings nutzen zu können, werden insgesamt etwa 6-7 Milliarden Euro an Investitionen bis 2030 benötigt, die in der gesamten Wertschöpfungskette wie beim Sammeln, Sortieren und dem Aufbau von Recyclingfabriken gebraucht werden. „Die Investition ins Fiber-to-fiber-Recycling lohnt sich nicht nur aus Nachhaltigkeitsgründen. Es können beim Recycling neue Rohmaterialien entstehen, die mehr Modeproduktion in Europa ermöglichen würden. Dadurch könnte diese Recyclingindustrie sogar noch mehr Wert generieren“, sagt Jonatan Janmark.

After several years at the management consultancy McKinsey and various management positions at Adient as well as its predecessor Johnson Controls, Herberg has been responsible for around 1,200 employees in the development of seat structures, trim and complete seating systems since May 2020.

From 7 to 9 November 2021, the world of apparel and textiles will meet in Antwerp, Belgium, for a double convention: the 36th World Fashion Convention on 7-8 November, hosted by IAF, and the 9th European Textiles and Apparel Convention on 8-9 November, hosted by EURATEX.

Delegates can choose to register for the IAF’s 36th World Fashion Convention, for EURATEX’s 9th European Textiles and Apparel Convention or for a combination of both, which the organisers of course recommend. The IAF Convention, carrying the theme ‘Transition of the Global Fashion System’ focusses on global industry developments whereas the EURATEX convention, themed “A new paradigm for the European Textiles and Clothing Industry”, has a strong European focus. Devan launches bio-based softener and quick-dry finish

Devan Chemicals recently added two more products to its range of bio-based textile finishes. One being a softener, the other one a quick-dry finish. Both are derived from vegetable oils and are in line with the company’s latest innovations on bio-based chemistry.

According to McKinsey & Company, the textile industry will experience innovation surrounding sustainably sourced raw materials and bio-based chemical additives to accommodate increasing consumer demand.

Devan launched its first bio-based technology in 2019 and is fully committed to making bio-based versions of their existing textile finishes. ‘We have put ourselves on a mission to be able to extend our Bio-Based range further”, says Sven Ghyselinck, CEO of Devan. “We wanted to make an even bigger impact on circularity than before, therefore we looked into what fabric producers use a lot: softeners and moisture management systems. Only by focusing more on the large volume products, can we support the industry to have a bigger impact on sustainability. After the growing success of our natural antimicrobial BI-OME NTL, we are proud to now introduce our new natural Passerelle line”.

Passerelle Soft NTL is a durable softness technology based on vegetable ingredients. The technology is wash durable and can be used with natural fibres like hemp, cotton, but is also fit for synthetic fibres like rPES, PA. The bio content of the technology is above 85% (ASTM D6866-20).

Passerelle Quick-Dry NTL is a moisture management technology also based on vegetable ingredients. This bio-based finish enables high wicking and evaporation capability which helps to evaporate water/sweat easier and faster. The technology is also > 60% (28 days) biodegradable according to OECD 301B.

SMART COMPOSITES: IPC UNVEILS AN INTELLIGENT MOTORCYCLE HELMET AND A MULTIFUNCTIONAL WIND TURBINE BLADE

IPC, the Industrial Technical Centre with expertise dedicated to plastic and composite innovation, is presenting two prototypes on its stand: an intelligent motorcycle helmet and a multifunctional windturbine blade. "With these two prototypes, IPC demonstrates its ability to functionalize composites, particularly with printed electronic components. Live demos will be organized during the three days of the show on our booth," explains Bertrand Fillon, General Manager of Research at IPC. The helmet was manufactured in partnership with the technical and creative paper manufacturer Arjowiggins, and the wind turbine blade, with the CEA. These two demonstrators will also be exhibited in Germany at the LOPEC exhibition 2019 in Munich on 20-21 March.

IMPROVE THE USER EXPERIENCE
The objective is to add new features to improve the user experience, without impacting security. The motorcycle helmet is equipped with sensors and NFC communication functions. "Here, printed organic electronics are used in the helmet to allow remote temperature changes," adds Lionel Tenchine, Program Line Manager for "Technologies for Intelligent Products" at IPC. The helmet manufacturing process is based on the use of composites and the infusion process.

DETECTING POTENTIAL DAMAGE IN ADVANCE
Developing predictive maintenance is an important issue when it comes to avoiding sudden, serious accidents. A recent McKinsey study estimates that by 2025 it will save $630 billion for companies, for example. The wind turbine blade presented at JEC World detects potential damage that could occur on the blade structure beforehand, making it possible to carry out preventive repairs on the one-meter-long blade. Printed organic electronics are used in the demonstrator to integrate strain gauges and the temperature detection function.

Nach einer aktuellen McKinsey-Studie scheint China auch als Hauptbeschaffungsland für Kleidung seinen Zenit überschritten zu haben. Erstmals seit 2014 sinkt das Exportvolumen aus China und Hongkong um acht Prozentpunkte. Auch andere große Bekleidungsexporteure wie Bangladesch, Vietnam und Indien verzeichnen erstmals ein geringeres Wachstum. So erwartet jeder zweite Einkaufschef von Bekleidungsunternehmen, dass bereits 2025 niedrige Löhne nicht mehr der Hauptgrund für Wahl des Beschaffungsortes sein werden, sondern die Digitalisierung. Grund dafür ist vor allem das veränderte Konsumentenverhalten.

Ein Sofa nach Maß, das Auto-Interieur in Trendfarben oder wöchentlich neue Kollektionen im Modegeschäft. „Unternehmen müssen schneller und flexibler auf die Wünsche der Konsumenten reagieren. Das verändert die gesamte Lieferkette“, sagt Chris Nicolaes, Geschäftsführer des Technologie-Experten Lectra. Die meisten befragten Einkaufschefs der Studie erwarten, dass Digitalisierung ihre Kosten um rund fünf Prozent senken und die Beschaffungszeit um zwei bis vier Wochen verkürzen wird. „Die notwendigen Technologien sind bereits vorhanden und werden erfolgreich eingesetzt“, so Nicolaes weiter.

Hybride Zulieferer durch Digitalisierung

Die zunehmende Digitalisierung und Automatisierung wirft ein neues Licht auf die Rückverlagerung der Produktion in geographische Nähe, das sogenannte Near-Shoring. Die deutsche Automobilindustrie setzt bereits stark auf die Produktion in Osteuropa. Nach Ernst & Young haben deutsche Hersteller alleine in der Visegrad4-Region (Polen, Tschechien, Slowakei und Ungarn) seit 2010 gut neun Milliarden Euro in ihre Werke investiert und 14.000 Jobs geschaffen. Blickt man auf die Möbelindustrie, gehören osteuropäische Unternehmen heute zu den größten Produzenten auf dem globalen Möbelmarkt. Mehr als jedes vierte Möbelstück In Deutschland stammt mittlerweile aus Polen. Die polnischen Werke der Polstermöbelhersteller DFM und Polipol zählen zu den modernsten weltweit.

Auf der einen Seite entwerfen Unternehmen heute zunehmend Möbel, Airbags oder Modekollektionen mit digitaler Software. Auf der anderen Seite automatisieren Zulieferer mit neuen digitalen Lösungen nicht nur diese Arbeitsschritte, sondern erweitern ihr Angebot und entwickeln neue Geschäftsmodelle. Weg von Lohnaufträgen, hin zu Komplettlösungen. Zulieferer bringen ihr Know-how vermehrt in den gesamten Produktionsprozess ein und setzen die Designideen ihrer Kunden eigenständig um. Es entstehen neue, hybride Geschäftsmodelle. Die Unternehmen in Westeuropa suchen ihrerseits Partner, die diese Komplettlösungen anbieten, um ihre Wertschöpfungskette zu vereinfachen – und finden diese vermehrt in Osteuropa.Kostenvorteile, die geographische Nähe, das steigende Bildungsniveau sowie die vergleichsweise geringen kulturellen Unterschiede sprechen für ein zunehmendes Interesse deutscher Unternehmen an osteuropäischen Staaten. Mit der Digitalisierung kommt ein neuer Treiber dazu.

Osteuropäischer Partner für H&M, Zara und Co.

Für die großen Modemarken ist das rumänische Unternehmen Romanita ein solcher Partner. 1972 gegründet ist das Unternehmen mit rund 800 Mitarbeitern einer der größten Bekleidungshersteller Rumäniens und produziert für viele internationale Marken, darunter H&M, Zara und Massimo Dutti.

Auch Romanita bekam den Marktwandel zu spüren und zwischen verkürzten Fristen und schrumpfenden Gewinnspannen kämpfte das Unternehmen, um weiterhin mit der Nachfrage Schritt zu halten. In erster Linie mussten die Stoffabfälle im Zuschnitt reduziert, die betriebliche Effizienz verbessert und Maschinenausfallzeiten vermieden werden. Die Lösung ist die digitale Transformation der eigenen Herstellungsprozesse. Romanita investierte in Zuschnitt-Software und Vector-Schneidemaschinen von Lectra.

„Wir kalkulieren, dass wir unsere Fehlerquote um 25 Prozent reduziert haben, drei Prozent weniger Stoffreste produzieren und zwei Prozent weniger Stoff verbrauchen. Unsere Kunden sind begeistert“, sagt Iuliana Tihon Dinoiu, CEO von Romanita.

Überzeugt von dem positiven Ergebnis entschied sich der Hersteller, die bestehende CAD-Lösungen durch Lectras Produktentwicklungssoftware Modaris zu ersetzen. Durch diese Investitionen bietet Romanita seinen Kunden anstatt einfachen Produktionsläufen heute vollentwickelte Modekollektionen aus einer Hand – von der Designidee bis zum fertigen Kleidungstück. So wird aus einem einfachen Zulieferer ein strategischer Partner.
