Hohenstein and Sizekick: AI for size recommendations

The Munich-based startup Sizekick launches a new technology and attracts well-known brands and retailers to reduce size-related returns in e-commerce. With the apparel technology know-how of the strategic partner and investor Hohenstein and the AI-based technology of Sizekick, more sustainable shopping in e-commerce with less CO2 emissions will be made possible. The technology company is now celebrating a successful market entry: The newly developed sizing AI is now available for fashion e-commerce stores and is pleased about the first successfully acquired customers. The solution promises to add value for both brands and consumers when shopping online by taking individual body measurements into account when recommending the right clothing size. The AI-based technology always offers two options to help arrive at the appropriate size recommendation. With BodyFinder, the AI suggests realistic body shapes to choose from. Alternatively, the video-based BodyScanner option enables a body scan via the smartphone's video function. All it takes to do this is to turn around in front of the phone's camera. Fashion brands and fashion retailers now have easy access to the new technology, as integration in the e-commerce store takes just a few minutes.

Hohenstein's expertise helped the Sizekick team to link accurate body measurements with the right product properties. Hohenstein is considered a leader in the field of size & fit and has been advising companies in the textile industry for over 75 years. Acting as both a seller and a supplier, Makroser Tekstil has an approximate monthly output of 150,000 square meters of final product and sells about 70-80,000 square meters of intermediate goods per month. “Our market has four main pillars, including chain market groups, export, e-commerce and our own retail network. We have gained serious momentum in the sales of our final products in recent years, and we attach great importance to our sales and marketing processes, in addition to production, so to increase our profitability. We are currently exporting 35-40% of our production, and our branding and e-commerce activities show that we are making significant improvements”, says Makroser Tekstil’s co-founder, Talha Güldest.

Makroser Tekstil decided to invest in a Mimaki TS300P-1800 sublimation transfer printer back in August 2020, with the aim to strengthen their position in the digitally printed carpet market. “The investment in the TS300P-1800 has enabled us to have the capacity to respond quickly to e-commerce orders,” Güldeste commented. “Product quality is the main criterion in the supplies we provide to both online and retail outlets. We made this investment because we saw that we would increase our quality and customer satisfaction in the carpets we print. The Mimaki printer met our expectations, providing the results we wanted from the very first print after installation.” Considering the increased demand, Güldeste aims to further boost their printing capacity with investment in several more Mimaki printers.

adidas with strong growth in Western markets in Q2

“Our Western markets continued to show strong momentum in the second quarter amid heightened macroeconomic uncertainty. Currency-neutral revenues increase 4% despite macroeconomic constraints
In the second quarter, currency-neutral revenues increased 4% as adidas continued to see strong momentum in Western markets. This growth was achieved despite continued challenges on both supply and demand. Supply chain constraints as a result of last year’s lockdowns in Vietnam reduced top-line growth by around € 200 million in Q2 2022. In addition, the company’s decision to suspend its operations in Russia reduced revenues by more than € 100 million during the quarter. Continued covid-19-related lockdowns in Greater China also weighed on the top-line development in Q2. From a channel perspective, the top-line increase was to a similar extent driven by the company’s own direct-to-consumer (DTC) activities as well as increases in wholesale. Within DTC, e-commerce, which now represents more than 20% of the company’s total business, showed double-digit growth reflecting strong product sell-through. From a category perspective, revenue development was strongest in the company’s strategic growth categories Football, Running and Outdoor, which all grew at strong double-digit rates. In euro terms, revenues grew 10% to € 5.596 billion in the second quarter (2021: € 5.077 billion).

Strong demand in Western markets
Revenue growth in the second quarter was driven by Western markets despite last year’s lockdowns in Vietnam still reducing sales, particularly in EMEA and North America, by
€ 200 million in total. In addition, the top-line development in EMEA was also impacted by the loss of revenue in Russia/CIS of more than € 100 million. Nevertheless, currency-neutral sales grew 7% in the region. Revenues in North America increased 21% during the quarter driven by growth of more than 20% in both DTC and wholesale. Revenues in Latin America increased 37%, while Asia-Pacific returned to growth. Currency-neutral revenues increased 3% in this market despite still being impacted by limited tourism activity in the region. In contrast, the company continued to face a challenging market environment in Greater China, mainly related to the continued broad-based covid-19-related restrictions. As a result, currency-neutral revenues in the market declined 35% during the three-months period, in line with previous expectations. Excluding Greater China, currency-neutral revenues in the company’s other markets combined grew 14% in Q2.

Operating profit of € 392 million reflects operating margin of 7.0%
The company’s gross margin declined 1.5 percentage points to 50.3% (2021: 51.8%). Significantly higher supply chain costs and a less favorable market mix due to the significant sales decline in Greater China weighed on the gross margin development. This could only be partly offset by a higher share of full price sales, first price increases and the benefits from currency fluctuations. Other operating expenses were up 19% to € 2.501 billion (2021: € 2.107 billion). As a percentage of sales, other operating expenses increased 3.2 percentage points to 44.7% (2021: 41.5%). Marketing and point-of-sale expenses grew 8% to € 663 million (2021: € 616 million). The company continued to prioritize investments into the launch of new products such as adidas’ new Sportswear collection, the next iteration of its successful Supernova running franchise and first drops related to the Gucci collaboration as well as campaigns around major events like ‘Run for the Oceans.’ As a percentage of sales, marketing and point-of-sale expenses were down 0.3 percentage points to 11.8% (2021: 12.1%). Operating overhead expenses increased by 23% to a level of € 1.838 billion (2021:
€ 1.492 billion). This increase was driven by adidas’ continuous investments into DTC, its digital capabilities and the company’s logistics infrastructure as well as by unfavorable currency fluctuations. As a percentage of sales, operating overhead expenses increased 3.5 percentage points to 32.8% (2021: 29.4%). The company’s operating profit reached a level of € 392 million (2021: € 543 million), resulting in an operating margin of 7.0% (2021: 10.7%).

Net income from continuing operations reaches € 360 million
The company’s net income from continuing operations slightly declined to € 360 million (2021: € 387 million). This result was supported by a one-time tax benefit of more than € 100 million due to the reversal of a prior year provision. Consequently, basic EPS from continuing operations reached € 1.88 (2021: € 1.93) during the quarter.

Currency-neutral revenues on prior year level in the first half of 2022
In the first half of 2022, currency-neutral revenues were flat versus the prior year period. In euro terms, revenues grew 5% to € 10.897 billion in the first six months of 2022 (2021:
€ 10.345 billion). The company’s gross margin declined 1.7 percentage points to 50.1% (2021: 51.8%) during the first half of the year. While price increases as well as positive exchange rate effects benefited the gross margin, these developments were more than offset by the less favorable market mix and significantly higher supply chain costs. Other operating expenses increased to € 4.759 billion (2021: € 4.154 billion) in the first half of the year and were up 3.5 percentage points to 43.7% (2021: 40.2%) as a percentage of sales. adidas generated an operating profit of € 828 million (2021: € 1.248 billion) during the first six months of the year, resulting in an operating margin of 7.6% (2021: 12.1%). Net income from continuing operations reached € 671 million, reflecting a decline of € 219 million compared to the prior year level (2021: € 890 million). Accordingly, basic earnings per share from continuing operations declined to € 3.47 (2021: € 4.52).

Average operating working capital as a percentage of sales slightly decreases
Inventories increased 35% to € 5.483 billion (2021: € 4.054 billion) at June 30, 2022 in anticipation of strong revenue growth during the second half of the year. Longer lead times as well as the challenging market environment in Greater China also contributed to the increase. On a currency-neutral basis, inventories were up 28%. Operating working capital increased 23% to € 5.191 billion (2021: € 4.213 billion). On a currency-neutral basis, operating working capital was up 14%. Average operating working capital as a percentage of sales decreased 0.4 percentage points to 21.0% (2021: 21.4%), reflecting an overproportional increase in accounts payable due to higher sourcing volumes and product costs.

Adjusted net borrowings at € 5.301 billion
Adjusted net borrowings amounted to € 5.301 billion at June 30, 2022, representing a year-over-year increase of € 2.155 billion (June 30, 2021: € 3.146 billion). This development was mainly due to the significant decrease in cash and cash equivalents.

FY 2022 outlook reflects double-digit growth during the second half of the year
On July 26, adidas adjusted its guidance for FY 2022 due to the slower-than-expected recovery in Greater China since the start of the third quarter resulting from continued widespread covid-19-related restrictions. adidas now expects currency-neutral revenues for the total company to grow at a mid- to high-single-digit rate in 2022 (previously: at the lower end of the 11% to 13% range), reflecting a double-digit decline in Greater China (previously: significant decline). While so far the company did not experience a meaningful slowdown in the sell-through of its products or significant cancellations of wholesale orders in any market other than Greater China, the adjusted guidance also accounts for a potential slowdown of consumer spending in those markets during the second half of the year as a result of the more challenging macroeconomic conditions. Therefore, growth in EMEA is now expected to be in the low teens (previously: mid-teens growth), while revenues in Asia-Pacific are projected to grow at a high-single-digit rate (previously: mid-teens growth). Despite the more conservative view on the development of consumer spending in the second half of the year, adidas has increased its forecasts for North America and Latin America reflecting the strong momentum the brand is enjoying in these markets. In North America, currency-neutral revenues are now expected to increase in the high teens. Sales in Latin America are projected to grow between 30% and 40% (both previously: mid- to high-teens growth).   

Due to the less favorable market mix and the impacts from initiatives to clear excess inventories in Greater China until the end of the year, gross margin is now expected to reach a level of around 49.0% (previously: around 50.7%) in 2022. Consequently, the company’s operating margin is now forecast to be around 7.0% (previously: around 9.4%) and net income from continuing operations is expected to reach a level of around € 1.3 billion (previously: at the lower end of the € 1.8 billion to € 1.9 billion range).

Damit liegen sie falsch, wie wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen belegen. Das geht aus einer vorgestellten Studie von Seven Senders zur Nachhaltigkeit im Onlinehandel hervor. Sie führt die wichtigsten Forschungsergebnisse zum Thema zusammen, ergänzt sie durch eine aktuelle Umfrage unter Konsumenten in sieben europäischen Ländern und bündelt sie zu Praxistipps und Best Practices für E-Tailer.

Wo die Potenziale liegen …
In der Generation Z, der junge Menschen zwischen 18 und 24 angehören, meinen neun von zehn, dass jedes Unternehmen Umweltverantwortung übernehmen sollte. Dabei interessieren sich 85 Prozent der europäischen Firmen für eine Reduktion ihrer Emissionen. Das betrifft auch die E-Commerce-Branche, obwohl sie – verglichen mit dem stationären Handel – in Sachen Umweltbelastung deutlich besser dasteht: Durchschnittlich ist der berechnete CO2-Ausstoß pro im Internet verkauftem Produkt um den Faktor 2,3 geringer. Dennoch gibt es in Sachen Klimaschutz noch Luft nach oben: Der Löwenanteil der im E-Commerce generierten Emissionen entfällt auf den Transport – First und Last Mile zusammengenommen. Er macht zwischen 35 und 65 Prozent der Gesamtumweltbelastung aus und bietet damit, neben Verpackung und Retourensteuerung, den größten Hebel für Verbesserungen.

Bewusstsein ist nicht gleich Handeln
Die Studie zeigt: Mit dem wachsenden Umweltbewusstsein der Onlineshopper in Deutschland, Österreich, der Schweiz, Frankreich, Italien, Spanien und den Niederlanden stieg zuletzt auch die Bereitschaft an, für nachhaltige Lieferoptionen mehr Geld in die Hand zu nehmen, und zwar von 54 Prozent 2021 auf 70 Prozent in diesem Jahr. Dies bedeutet nicht automatisch, dass die Option beim Checkout auch tatsächlich genutzt wird. Best Practices in der Studie von Seven Senders zeigen, dass eine gute Nutzerführung und Information über die Umweltwirkungen verschiedener Versandlösungen dazu beitragen, dass nachhaltige Optionen um bis zu viermal häufiger angenommen werden. Die Studie macht deutlich, dass der Onlinehandel für das Erreichen seiner Klimaziele auf die Mitwirkung seiner Kunden angewiesen: Eine Senkung der Retourenquote, die für vermeidbare Umweltbelastungen sorgt, oder mehr Akzeptanz für eine Zustellung an Out-of-Home-Sammelstellen schaffen Quick Wins fürs Klima, die jeder E-Tailer nur gemeinsam mit seinen Kunden erreichen – und damit tonnenweise CO2 einsparen kann. Wie viel genau, das beziffert Seven Senders im Rahmen eines DEKRA-zertifizierten Rechenmodells: Demnach verursacht die Zustellung an eine Out-of-Home-Sammelstelle im Vergleich zur Lieferung an eine Privatadresse durchschnittlich 300 g weniger CO2 pro Paket.

Nachhaltigkeit ist (k)ein Zukunftsthema
Trotzdem ist der Weg hin zu einem Onlinehandel, der keine Emissionen mehr verursacht, noch weit – und die Realisierung von CO2-neutralen Logistiklösungen, wie der Einsatz von E-LKWs, wird noch Jahre brauchen. Der Klimaschutz braucht schnell wirksame Lösungen, hier bietet sich die Kompensation von kurzfristig nicht vermeidbaren CO2-Emissionen als „goldene Brücke“ in eine emissionsarme oder sogar -freie Zukunft an, in der entsprechende Maßnahmen umsetzbar sind und greifen. Dass eine solche Strategie auch ein Wettbewerbsvorteil und Wachstumsimpuls für verantwortungsvoll agierende E-Tailer sein kann, zeigt die Studie ebenfalls: Durch die Skaleneffekte der E-Commerce-Logistik und abweichende Konsumgewohnheiten in den unterschiedlichen europäischen Märkten kann sogar eine Expansion zu positiven Effekten in der Klimabilanz führen. Thomas Hagemann, Gründer und Co-CEO von Seven Senders, sieht die E-Tailer auf einem guten Weg in Richtung Nachhaltigkeit: „Kaum eine Branche entwickelt sich so dynamisch wie der Onlinehandel, der sich mit Disruption auskennt wie kaum ein anderer. Frühzeitig auf die Wünsche von Konsument:innen einzugehen und diese rasch und effizient umzusetzen, gehört zu seinen Stärken. Such financial improvement was attributable to various reasons, including (i) the new infrastructure and strategies instituted by the current management team; (ii) improvement in sales with higher gross profit margin; (iii) positive results of efficient cost control measures; (iv) improved inventory management; and (v) growth in E-commerce.

Although revenue in the Current Year was affected by lockdowns in the Company’s major European markets during the first quarter of 2021, and due to increased restrictions on entry requirements into stores during the fourth quarter of 2021, the Group generated revenue via three main channels: E-commerce, wholesale, and owned retail stores. As the ESPRIT brand website and third-party E-commerce partners continued to trade during lockdown, a large portion of the Group’s sales were generated online. NCTO welcomes House Passage of America COMPETES Act

The National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO), representing the full spectrum of U.S. textiles from fiber through finished sewn products, issued a statement welcoming House passage of the America COMPETES Act, a legislative package that will help close the de minimis loophole on duty-free imports from China and also renew the Miscellaneous Tariff Bill (MTB), both important provisions to U.S. textile manufacturers.

“We commend the House for passing this sweeping legislation, which contains several critical trade provisions beneficial to American manufacturers,” said NCTO President and CEO Kim Glas. “This legislation contains a provision that would effectively prohibit China from exploiting the Section 321 de minimis mechanism in U.S. trade law, a win for U.S. textile producers and workers.

This bill would help close the de minimis loophole, which allows imports valued under $800 to come into the United States without paying duties and taxes, bypassing inspections by U.S. Customs and providing a backdoor to Chinese goods produced with forced labor. The loophole has not only fueled the rise of imports from foreign e-commerce companies and mass distributors, but it has also put our domestic manufacturers and workers at a competitive disadvantage.”

Another important provision in the legislation renews the MTB for two years, which would extend limited tariff relief on a range of manufacturing inputs used by U.S. textile producers.

In closing, NCTO’s Glas stated: “NCTO worked closely with our allies in the House on these provisions in the underlying bill and we commend their hard work and support. We will continue to push for these critical provisions that benefit the U.S. textile industry in Senate-House conference negotiations in the coming days.”

Fair’s fringe programme highlights sustainability, design and more
As with all of Messe Frankfurt’s textile fairs around the world, sustainability is a big focus. A number of events under this focus took place in the fair’s fringe programme, including a half day forum titled How Sustainable Fashion is Reshaping Lifestyles, with a range of innovative companies and prestigious universities participating as speakers.

The Design Talk session featured a series of presentations from leading international designers, including from China, Japan and Europe, to share their design insights. And a new concept this year, titled New Voices of Top Youth Upholstery Designers – Intertextile Upholstery Design and City Roving Exhibition, showcased the work of six groups of young local designers from across China who presented the interior design ideas of their generation through displays and a forum. And reflecting the changes that continue to accelerate in the industry, a number of e-commerce and cross-border trade events took place, including sessions from the likes of JD Home, AliExpress and Tmall.

The 2022 Intertextile Shanghai Home Textiles – Spring Edition will take place from 9 – 11 March, while the Autumn Edition is scheduled for 23 – 25 August 2022.

In addition, experts will share the new trends of licensing and IP with case studies for the furniture companies and fabric brands.

REACH4Textiles: Better market surveillance for textile products

The REACH4texiles project just kicked off. Funded by the European Commission, it aims at exploring solutions for fair and effective market surveillance on textile products.

Every year, about 28 billion of garments circulate across Europe, 80% of which are imported from outside the EU and its jurisdiction.
 
Inevitably, such huge volumes pose enormous challenges for market surveillance authorities which are called to ensure that uncompliant dangerous products are kept away from the EU citizens.

The European Union has the world most comprehensive chemical legislation which is set to protect consumers, the environment and, theoretically, even the competitiveness  of the business.

Such EU chemical legislation evolves constantly, increasing scope and ambition. New restrictions impact authorities and sectors like the European textile value chain and generate new costs for all actors.

Evidence suggests that such advanced regulatory framework is not completed with an equally advanced or effective EU-wide control system capable of ensuring compliance, especially in the case of imported products.

The 2 years project will share best practices, identify efficient approaches against non-compliant products, offer training and support for a more effective surveillance and for level playing field.

The project welcomes collaboration with concerned authorities across the EU Member States.

A well-functioning EU market surveillance system is an essential prerequisite to protect citizen, the environment and competitiveness of responsible business. When it comes to textiles, the broad range of products, the large set of REACH subjected chemicals used in textiles as well as industrial strategies like fast fashion make this a challenging task.

Challenges may include lack of resources, difficulties in identifying higher risk products, cost and management of chemical tests, lack of test methods and knowledge of best practices. These challenges are yet likely to increase with the upcoming REACH restrictions and the growth of e-commerce.

Because of this, products that do not comply with REACH regulations encounter today little or no barriers to enter the market. This creates not only a health risk for Europeans but also undermines the competitivity of responsible businesses that take all necessary measures to comply with these regulations.

Addressing the challenges requires more knowledge at market surveillance and stronger collaboration between these authorities, the textile and clothing industry and testing laboratories. More knowledge about the identification of risk baring textile products and REACH chemicals likely to be used in these products, suitable test methods and strategies such as fast screening on REACH chemicals, trustworthiness of labels, etc can increase the effectiveness of market surveillance considerably.

The REACH4Textiles first objective (keep non-compliant products away from the EU Market) will be pursued by increasing knowledge on market surveillance functioning by and working on a risk-based approach to identify products at higher risk.

The second objective supports a network to address the specificities of chemicals in textiles with market surveillance authorities and involving other relevant stakeholders. The third objective focuses on sharing knowledge with market surveillance actors on textile products and suitable test methodologies.

Supported by the European Commission DG Growth, the project team is coordinated by the Belgian test and research center Centexbel and include the European Textiles and Apparel industry confederation, EURATEX, the German national textile and fashion association Textile und Mode, t+m, the Italian association Tessile e Salute. Several other European industry associations and national authorities are welcomed to become involved through the project activities.

Der Betreiber erhält einen Matrixsorter für den Direktversand an Verbraucher und Filialen. Er profitiert von einem vereinfachten Retourenhandling, weil die dynamische Pufferung das erneute Lagern und Kommissionieren überflüssig macht. Der neue Sorter erhöht den Durchsazu um 25 Prozent im Vergleich zu herkömmlichen Taschensortern. Er benötigt nur wenig Platz und eignet sich für die Sortierung ganz verschiedener Artikel – von Hightech bis hin zu High-Heels. Die Gewichtskapazität der Taschen beträgt sieben Kilogramm.

Mit dem BG Pouch System ist es Logistikern und externen Logistikdienstleistern (3PL) möglich, die steigende Nachfrage nach schnellen, durch den E-Commerce bestimmten Taktzeiten zu erfüllen. Das wachsende Problem der Retourenbearbeitung wird im Lager durch eine effiziente Handhabung auf Basis einer integrierten automatischen Zwischenpufferung für rückgesandte Produkte gelöst. Unnötige manuelle Arbeitsschritte werden vermieden, da die Retouren wieder direkt aus dem dynamischen Puffer zum Versand gebracht werden können, ohne dass sie an das Hauptlager zurückgeschickt oder nochmals kommissioniert werden müssen. In einem Omnichannel-Umfeld stellen die Sortier- und Sequenzierfunktionen einen unschätzbaren Vorteil dar. Die filialgerechte Sortierung der Waren sorgt dafür, dass die Produkte effizient entsprechend der Regalsequenz vereinnahmt werden können.

Das BG Pouch System hat eine Gewichtskapazität von sieben Kilogramm pro Tasche, wodurch es sich perfekt für Modeartikel von Schuhen bis hin zu Kleidungsstücken auf Kleiderbügeln (GoH) eignet, aber auch für eine breitere Produktpalette, einschließlich Druck und Medien, Pharma- und Beauty-Produkte sowie Elektronik. Diese Vielseitigkeit sorgt für hohe Flexibilität bei der Handhabung verschiedenster Artikel, unabhängig von der Notwendigkeit der Retourenabwicklung, saisonalen Spitzen oder Omnichannel-Anforderungen. Verschiedene Artikel, die für unterschiedliche Kunden vorgehalten werden und für unterschiedliche Versandarten bestimmt sind, können somit in einem einzigen intelligenten System zusammengefasst werden. Dies wird besonders für Logistikdienstleister interessant sein.

Jedes Modul des BG Pouch System kann bis zu 10.000 Teile pro Stunde sortieren. Der Einsatz eines dynamischen Puffers erlaubt manuelle Arbeitsschritte zu reduzieren, Intralogistikabläufe zu beschleunigen und ermöglicht eine vorausschauende Kommissionierung.

Technisch arbeitet das System mit einem berührungslosen Magnetantrieb für Stauförderer (ca. 80 Prozent der Förderstrecke in einem typischen System), der einen reibungsfreien Betrieb ermöglicht.
