Philipp Weigel erhält 1. Preis des ITMA Research & Innovation Excellence Award

Im Rahmen der diesjährigen ITMA 2023, der internationalen Textilmaschinenausstellung und Plattform für die gesamte Textilmaschinenbranche, die vom 08. bis 14. Juni 2023 in Mailand stattfand, wurde Herr Dipl.-Ing. Philipp Weigel für seine am ITM angefertigte exzellente Studienarbeit "Numerische Simulation des Struktur- und Auszugverhaltensparametrisch generierter profilierter Carbonpolymergarne" mit dem ITMA Sustainable Innovation Award in der Kategrie "Research & Innovation Excellence Award" ausgezeichnet. Er erhielt hierfür den 1. Preis, der mit 10.000 EUR dotiert ist.
 
Die Arbeit ist von großem wissenschaftlichen Interesse für die Entwicklung hochleistungsfähiger, ressourcenschonender Carbonbetonbauteile mit höchster Materialeffizienz und Nachhaltigkeit sowie für die simulative Beschreibung und digitale Auslegung der Bewehrungsstruktur.

Der Preis umfasst zwei Kategorien: einen Industry Excellence Award für Textil- und Bekleidungshersteller und einen Research & Innovation Excellence Award, der für Master-Studenten offen ist.

TU Dresden awards Honorary Doctorate to Professor Paul Kiekens

In recognition of his extraordinary engineering achievements in the fields of textile mechanical engineering, textile technology as well as textile chemistry and surface modification of textile semi-finished products, Prof. Paul Kiekens was awarded the title of Doctor honoris causa (Dr.-Ing. h.c.) on April 5, 2023.
 
Prof. Kiekens was a university professor at Ghent University, Belgium, for almost 35 years and thus responsible for textile-oriented education and research. Intensive interaction with European business and science was always particularly important to him.
 

In recognition of his extraordinary engineering achievements in the fields of textile mechanical engineering, textile technology as well as textile chemistry and surface modification of textile semi-finished products, Prof. Paul Kiekens was awarded the title of Doctor honoris causa (Dr.-Ing. h.c.) on April 5, 2023.
 
Prof. Kiekens was a university professor at Ghent University, Belgium, for almost 35 years and thus responsible for textile-oriented education and research. Intensive interaction with European business and science was always particularly important to him.
 
Immediately after the fall of the Berlin Wall, he opened the way for international cooperation in teaching and research in the field of textile mechanical engineering, textile technologies, and textile chemistry for the only Eastern European university research institution with a textile orientation, the ITM (formerly ITB) at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of TU Dresden, and provided great and uncomplicated support. A close, lasting and intensive relationship developed, which had a trend-setting influence on the scientific career of Professor Paul Kiekens. This was reflected above all in the expert advice given for major projects.
 
These include, for example, the funded junior research group "Holistic approach to the development and modelling of a new generation of multiaxial fabrics for fibre composites to strengthen Saxon, French and Flemish industry in the high-performance sector" (SAXOMAX) and jointly acquiring the EU project "Large scale manufacturing technology for high performance lightweight 3D multifunctional composites" (3D-LightTrans). Especially in these large-scale projects, intensive cooperation with industrial partners was essential for success.
 
As early as the 1990s, Professor Paul Kiekens had the vision of creating a European network for universities in textile teaching and research. In 1994, the Association of Universities for Textiles (AUTEX) was founded with the aim of establishing teaching and research in the field of textile technology at an internationally respected level through joint concepts. Due to the prevailing cooperation at that time between Professor Dr. Paul Kiekens and Professor Dr. Peter Offermann, the TU Dresden, represented by the ITM (formerly ITB), has been a full member and decisively integrated in the network since its foundation on July 1, 1994. Thus Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Paul Kiekens has significantly promoted the international cooperation of the TU Dresden, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering with international university textile research institutions.
 
Professor Paul Kiekens was executive coordinator of AUTEX until his retirement. The internationally renowned symposium takes place annually as a part of AUTEX.

Gunnar Meyer new Managing Director for Monforts

Gunnar Meyer has been assigned the new Managing Director of A. Monforts Textilmaschinen GmbH & Co. KG in Mönchengladbach, Germany, as of January 1st 2023.

He started his career with Monforts and has spent his whole working life in the textile machinery industry. Between 1985 and 2010 he was a key part of the Monforts team in various roles related to sales and commercial issues, including as General Sales Director. He returned to the company in 2019 after working for other well-known German textile machine manufacturers in the field of nonwovens.

“Working in other parts of the textile industry, I have gained a lot of experience in the management of complex technical textile projects and my special focus will certainly be on challenges like the current energy crisis, alternative heating systems and sustainable textile finishing,” stated Meyer.

VDMA Textile Machinery Association: Dr Harald Weber succeeds Thomas Waldmann

Dr. Harald Weber will become the new managing director of the VDMA Textile Machinery Association on 1 January 2023. The 44-year-old industrial engineer succeeds Thomas Waldmann, who has held the position since 1991 and will retire at the end of the year.

After completing his doctorate at the Technical University of Darmstadt and working as a lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences Mittelhessen (THM), Dr. Weber joined the VDMA in 2011. Since then, he has been responsible for the topics of technology and innovation in the Plastics and Rubber Machinery Association.

Dr. Janpeter Horn, Chairman of the VDMA Textile Machinery Association and Managing Director of August Herzog Maschinenfabrik, commented on the change of personnel: "From his previous work in the plastics industry, Dr. Weber has profound knowledge and experience in topics that are also gaining in importance in textile machinery manufacturing. Examples include recycling and the circular economy, as well as digitalisation and especially the communication standard OPC UA."

VDMA: Dr. Janpeter Horn New Chairperson of Textile Machinery Association

Dr. Janpeter Horn, Managing Director of August Herzog Maschinenfabrik, is the new Chairperson of the VDMA Textile Machinery. Dr. Horn was elected at the members’ meeting of the Association in Leonberg. The new Executive Board is completed with Ms. Regina Brückner, Managing Associate of Brückner Trockentechnik and Ms. Verena Thies, Managing Shareholder of Thies Textilmaschinen, who were elected as Vice Chairpersons.

After his election, Dr. Horn stated: “I am pleased to have Ms. Brückner and Ms. Thies by my side. Both have been serving on the Executive Board of the VDMA Textile Machinery as well as the European Committee of Textile Machinery Manufacturers CEMATEX for many years. With this team, we are well prepared to effectively represent the interests of the industry at national and international level.”

Based in Oldenburg, Northern Germany, Herzog is a company with a long tradition and at the same time the most innovative developer and manufacturer of braiding and winding machinery. Worldwide references in braiding and winding technique confirm the company’s technical and quality leadership.

Monforts presents Econtrol® at VDMA Webtalk in February

Monforts textile technologist Jonas Beisel will outline the benefits of the company’s Econtrol® continuous dyeing process during the next free-to-attend VDMA Textile Machinery Webtalk which takes place on February 3rd 2022 at 13.00 (CET).

“Our customers are increasingly looking at shorter production runs and the more economical use of dyestuffs, as well as reducing water and energy consumption,” says Beisel. “We have gained many years of experience in the optimisation of dyeing processes through working with our customers, both at their own plants and in our Advanced Technology Centre (ATC) in Mönchengladbach, Germany.

“Our Thermex universal hotflue for continuous dyeing, curing and thermosoling achieves unrivalled reliability even at high fabric speeds, for exceptional cost-effectiveness when dyeing both large and small batches of woven fabrics. The Econtrol® process for reactive dyestuffs now has an impressive number of references on the market, as a quick and economical one-pass pad-dry and wash off process. This is the ideal process for fast change technology and operational savings.”

Econtrol® is a registered trademark of DyStar® Colours Distribution GmbH, Germany, and Bertram Seuthe of DyStar® will be providing recommendations for dyes and auxiliaries for the process during the VDMA event.

A third speaker, Guido Seiler of Fong’s Europe, will explain how Goller washing ranges help to significantly reduce the water that is conventionally wasted in the washing off process, through a combination of process and chemistry know-how and advanced technologies.

Kreativitätspreis des Deutschen Textilmaschinenbaues 2021 geht an Irina Kuznik

Die Verleihung der Förder- und Kreativitätspreise 2021 der Walter Reiners-Stiftung des VDMA, Fachverband Textilmaschinen an Studierende und Nachwuchswissenschaftler:innen deutscher Universitäten für Spitzenleistungen in Studium und Promotion fand am 09. November 2021 im Rahmen der Aachen-Dresden-Denkendorf International Textile Conference 2021 statt. Die bundesweit ausgeschriebenen Förder- und Kreativitätspreise wurden erneut online durch Herrn Peter D. Dornier, Vorstandsvorsitzender der Walter Reiners-Stiftung, verliehen.

Frau Dipl.-Ing. Irina Kuznik vom Institut für Textilmaschinen und Textile Hochleistungswerkstofftechnik (ITM) der TU Dresden wurde mit dem 3.000 EUR dotierten Kreativitätspreis des Deutschen Textilmaschinenbaues 2021 für ihre exzellente Diplomarbeit „Entwicklung zur umweltfreundlichen Herstellung neuartiger Chitosanfasergarne unter Einsatz von ionischen Flüssigkeiten" ausgezeichnet.

Frau Dipl.-Ing. Irina Kuznik vom Institut für Textilmaschinen und Textile Hochleistungswerkstofftechnik (ITM) der TU Dresden wurde mit dem 3.000 EUR dotierten Kreativitätspreis des Deutschen Textilmaschinenbaues 2021 für ihre exzellente Diplomarbeit „Entwicklung zur umweltfreundlichen Herstellung neuartiger Chitosanfasergarne unter Einsatz von ionischen Flüssigkeiten" ausgezeichnet.

In ihrer Diplomarbeit entwickelte Frau Kuznik einen völlig neuen Ansatz zur ökologischen und ökonomischen Herstellung von Chitosangarnen. Unter Nutzung ionischer Flüssigkeiten als gut geeignetes, neuartiges Lösungsmittel für Chitosan lässt sich Chitosan mit geringen Deacetylierungsgraden sowie reines Chitin erfolgreich auflösen. In einem Nassspinnverfahren können damit erzeugte Spinnlösungen zu neuartigen Chitosan- bzw. Chitinmonofilamenten mit sehr guten morphologischen Eigenschaften hergestellt werden. Des Weiteren lässt sich die ionische Flüssigkeit mittels eines Verdampfungsverfahrens aus dem Abwasser zurückgewinnen und wiederaufbereitet werden.

Gegenstand der Dissertation ist die Entwicklung und Umsetzung von neuartigen Hybridgarnen aus recycelten Carbonfasern (rCF) und Polyamid (PA) 6-Fasern für thermoplastische Verbundbauteile. Diese Hybridgarne können die hervorragenden mechanischen Eigenschaften der rCF im Gegensatz zu bisherigen Lösungen in hohem Maße ausnutzen. Bedingt durch deren spezielle Fasereigenschaften (insbesondere hohe Querkraftempfindlichkeit, Sprödigkeit und fehlende Kräuselung) wurde dafür die Prozesskette der konventionellen Stapelfasergarnherstellung, bestehend aus Krempel, Strecke und Flyer, umfangreich analysiert und technologisch-konstruktiv weiterentwickelt, wodurch erstmalig eine schonende und gleichmäßige Herstellung der Hybridgarne ermöglicht werden konnte.

Monforts: Vice-President Klaus Heinrichs is to retire at the end of May

Klaus Heinrichs began working in marketing for the company in 1992. “From the very beginning until today Klaus used his great flair and networking skills to secure and improve the company’s international presence and public relations, especially at seven successive ITMA textile machinery exhibitions, beginning with the show in Milan in 1995,” said Monforts Marketing Manager Nicole Croonenbroek.  “Later, he also took care of customer service, sales administration and exports in his uniquely calm and quietly-spoken style.”

“He has always been a guarantor of successful product launches for Monforts technical and technological highlights such as the TwinAir principle of independent airflow regulation, the Hercules LTM stenter chain, the Econtrol® dyeing technology or the Montex®Coat device - to mention only a few.”

Sustainable leadership for GtA with new Monforts Montex wide width lines

Following the successful commissioning of two new Monforts Montex wide-width stenter lines and additional environmental management equipment at its plant in Germany, GtA – Society for Textile Equipment GmbH – is aiming to be the first textile finishing company to become entirely CO2-neutral in the manufacture of all of its products by 2025.

GtA is a partner company to Germany’s large-format digital printing fabric leader, Georg and Otto Friedrich GmbH, which has has this year been able to considerably expand its portfolio due to the new Monforts lines.

Headquartered in Gross-Zimmern, close to Frankfurt, Georg and Otto Friedrich GmbH and its partners in Germany have an annual production of 37 million square metres of warp knits for a range of end-use applications, including garments, automotive interiors and technical textiles, but increasingly with a concentration on digital printing substrates.

Fault-free textiles

Fault-free textiles

A new standard in pure white, 100% clean and fault-free textile substrates has been demanded by this market in recent years due to the rapid growth in digitally-printed banners and billboards – often referred to as ‘soft signage’.

The substrates of choice for digital printing are 100% polyester warp knits which are resilient and allow excellent take-up of inks, and vibrant colours and clear and precise images to be achieved with digital printing techniques. The knitted construction also has the advantage of elasticity, which is a plus in terms of flexibility for installers.

Critically, the warp knitted fabrics have extremely smooth surfaces which is becoming increasingly important due to the general move away from PVC coatings which were the standard in the past.

It was to finish these fabrics for Georg and Otto Friedrich GmbH as well as providing such services for many other customers, that the GtA plant in Neresheim, Baden-Württemberg, was established in 2015.

The purpose-built plant on a greenfield site was initially equipped with a fully-automated, 72 metre long Monforts installation comprising a washing machine integrated with a 3.6 metre wide, seven-chamber Montex stenter. The line quickly went from single to double shift production and then to 24/7 operation  to meet demand.

Expanded widths

Building on the success of this installation, GtA has now installed two more Montex stenter lines – both in expanded working widths of 5.6 metres and purpose-built at Montex GmbH in Austria.

A six-chamber Montex unit is combined with a washing machine to guarantee the purity of the substrates, while a five-chamber line is integrated with a wide-width coating machine. This new coating capability at GtA has led to a number of new additions to the Georg and Otto Friedrich DecoTex range for digital printing, including wide width fabrics with flame retardant, antimicrobial and non-slip finishes.

The new Montex stenter lines benefit from all of the latest innovations from Monforts, including the Smart Sensor system for the optimised maintenance planning of key mechanical wear components on the stenters. A comprehensive overview of the condition of all parts at any time is now available for operators within the highly intuitive Qualitex visualization software.

With Qualitex, all article-specific settings can be stored and the formulations for thousands of treatment processes called up again at any time. Individual operators can also personalise their dashboards with the most important machine functions and process parameters.

Environmental commitment

GtA is run by a seasoned team of textile professionals led by Managing Director Andreas Niess.

“We have received excellent service from Monforts from the outset and we were happy to place the order for these two new lines as part of our ongoing cooperation,” he says. “With all of the latest Monforts advances in technology we are fully in control of all production and quality parameters with these lines, as part of our significant commitment to innovative environmental technology.”

The GtA plant, which operates in near-cleanroom conditions, has also been equipped with proprietary technology to fully exploit the Monforts air-to-air heat recovery systems that are now standard with Montex stenters.

“Around 30 per cent of our investment volume at the site goes to energy-saving measures and we are sure that this commitment is worthwhile,” Mr Niess says. “As an example, our integrated heat recovery system fully exploits the waste heat from the process exhaust air and the burner exhaust gases of the Monforts stenters, allowing us to achieve an exhaust air temperature of  between 30 to 34°C, compared to what would conventionally be between 140 to 160°C. Another focus has been on exhaust air purification technology and here too, the latest technology has been installed with integrated heat recovery elements.”

This, he adds, saves 52% of the energy that would normally be used – equating to 5,800,000 KwH per year. The necessary audits for energy-efficient companies are also carried out annually.

In addition, GtA has purpose-designed the automatic chemical mixing and dosing systems that feed the padders for the key treatments that are carried out on the fabrics through the stenters.

The company is going further, however, in its pursuit of clean production and raw materials.

"We want to be an asset and not a burden on our immediate environment and therefore do not use any additives containing solvents," Mr Niess says. “We were the first to use fully halogen-free flame retardant chemistry, and we use bio-based, finely ground alumina products for the washing process instead of surfactants. PES polyester yarns made from recycled material are also increasingly used and the latest additions to our raw materials portfolio, the RC-Ocean products, are made from recycled sea plastic.

“We are now planning a combined heat and power plant for the production of electrical energy and heat and we will also build a photovoltaic system that converts solar radiation into electrical energy. GtA wants to be the first textile finishing company to be CO2-neutral in the manufacture of all of its products by 2025. The complete heat supply and heating for the 13,000 square metre production hall, as well as the office building and the hot water supply for the domestic water, is already energy-neutral. We are convinced that this commitment will pay off in the long term and our positive business development proves that sustainability and business profitability are perfectly compatible.”

In addition to the products for Georg and Otto Friedrich GmbH, GtA  offers its manufacturing capacities for other customers as a contract service.

All products are manufactured in accordance with Öko-Tex Standard 100, product class 1 and the company is also involved in the research and development of new sustainable manufacturing processes, in cooperation with many regional universities and funding project partners.

The production of protective masks starts with the manufacture of the filter material, which for surgical masks as well as FFP2 and FFP3 respirator masks consists of fine-pored nonwoven fabric to intercept coronaviruses. In addition to the systems, machines and components used for this purpose, measurement and control technology ensures the highest quality of important parameters such as basis weight and air permeability. Nonwovens used for respiratory masks have to meet the same high-quality requirements as the masks – to ensure the protection of the mask wearer.

Members of the VDMA Textile Machinery Association have reacted to the new market requirements in a very short time and developed new technologies for knitted, warp knitted as well as woven mouth and nose masks that can be produced without the need for sewing. For surgical masks, FFP2 respirators and social distancing masks, a wide variety of other materials and combinations of materials are used (nonwovens, woven fabrics, knitted or warp knitted fabrics and laminates thereof). Elastic bands are required to wear the masks and several association members provide technologies for their production.

Materials for masks can be treated with textile chemicals to make them antiviral and antibacterial. For this purpose, the VDMA member companies offer application systems which apply the corresponding chemicals to fabric webs. As already mentioned, quality assurance is extremely important for medical products. For this purpose, member companies of the VDMA offer software systems with which each mask can be traced through the entire production process.

VDMA members also offer solutions for the assembly of respirator masks, some of which were developed at short notice. These solutions enable respirators to be produced that meet the relevant standards and the highest quality requirements of customers and market surveillance. This applies to systems for the production of surgical masks and FFP respirators. At the end of the production chain, machines are used to pack masks in single or multiple packs.

In pandemic times, the demand for protective gowns (so-called surgical gowns) also increases. The same applies to disinfecting wipes. For these textile products, too, VDMA members manufacture tailor-made machines for production through to packaging. The quality of the products is ensured by means of measurement and control technology.

In the wake of the corona crisis, VDMA Textile Machinery has launched a new series of web events called "Textile Machinery Webtalk". Here, experts from up to four VDMA member companies present their innovative technologies on a specific topic in a maximum of 90 minutes and are available to answer questions from participants. The presentations are held in English. Participation in the web events is free of charge.
Topics of the first two webtalks were:
"Technologies for the production of melt-blown nonwovens for respiratory protection masks (FFP masks and surgical masks)."
"Technologies for the production of respiratory protection masks (FFP masks and surgical masks)."

The format is well received. Around 180 people from more than 30 countries took part in the first two webtalks. With this format, the VDMA reaches both textile and nonwovens manufacturers who already manufacture these products and companies that want to invest in new business areas.

The next webtalk will take place on 23 July 2020 from 14.00 to 16.00 (CEST) on the current topic "Technology solutions to produce fully-fashioned community face masks." Experts from KARL MAYER, STOLL by KARL MAYER and Jakob Müller will be presenting their technologies for producing everyday textile masks to an international expert audience. TU Dresden präsentiert textile 3D-gestrickte Mund-Nasen-Masken

Seit dem 20. April 2020 gilt für das Bundesland Sachsen eine Maskenpflicht beim Einkaufen und im öffentlichen Personen- und Nahverkehr. Eine entsprechende Verordnung wurde hierfür am 17. April 2020 vom Freistaat Sachsen bekannt gegeben.

Aufgrund der neuerlassenen Allgemeinverfügung und der damit einhergehenden, notwendi-gen Schutzmaßnahmen zur Verringerung der Ausbreitung von COVID-19 wird das Institut für Textilmaschinen und Textile Hochleistungswerkstofftechnik (ITM) der TU Dresden nach der am 20. April 2020 erfolgten Wiederaufnahme des laborbasierten Forschungsbetriebes die bereits in der ITM-Pressemitteilung vom 31. März 2020 vorgestellte textile, 3D-gestrickte Mund-Nasen-Maske intensiv weiterentwickeln. Das ITM möchte damit einen wichtigen aktiven Beitrag zum Schutz der Gesundheit der Bevölkerung leisten.

Hierfür sind in den letzten Tagen die Kooperationen mit langjährigen Netzwerkpartnern des ITM wei-ter intensiviert worden. Gemeinsam mit der renommierten Textilmaschinenfirma H. Stoll AG & Co. KG aus Reutlingen ist es gelungen, mit dem am ITM erarbeiteten technologischen Know-how auf einer am ITM der TU Dresden installierten Flachstrickmaschine Stoll ADF 530-32 BW weitere Vari-anten neuartiger, textiler 3D-gestrickter Mund-Nasen-Masken erfolgreich umzusetzen.

Am ITM können somit Mund-Nasen-Masken-Varianten mit unterschiedlichsten Materialkombinatio-nen auf Flachstrickmaschinen von zwei Maschinenherstellern, die sich alle als waschbarer und damit wiederverwendbarer Mund-Nasen-Schutz eignen, anforderungs- und passformgerecht gefertigt wer-den. Je nach Materialzusammensetzung sind die Mehrwegmasken für Kochwäsche mit handelsübli-chen Waschmitteln bzw. bei 60° mit Desinfektionswaschmittel geeignet. Bei den Masken kann wahl-weise eine Tasche direkt im Fertigungsprozess integriert werden, in die temporär noch zusätzlich Fil-terstrukturen eingelegt werden können. Die gestrickten Mund-Nasen-Masken sind – intuitiv, schnell, unkompliziert in der Handhabung – auch für Brillenträger geeignet und erfordern beim Anlegen keine Hilfe einer weiteren Person. Mittels weiterer anforderungsgerechter Materialkombinationen können auch spezifische Eigenschaften, wie z. B. Atmungsaktivität, Tragekomfort und Hautverträglichkeit, ge-zielt eingestellt und diesbezüglich im Rahmen erster freiwilliger Versuchsreihen mit Mitarbeitern des ITM intensiv getestet werden.

Als eines der weltweit führenden Textilforschungsinstitute wird das ITM mit der lösungssystemati-schen Entwicklung anforderungsgerechter Mund-Nasen-Masken einen wichtigen gesellschaftlichen und nachhaltigen Beitrag für das Gemeinwohl der Bevölkerung leisten. Das Team des ITM, welches maßgeblich bei der Maskenentwicklung involviert ist, freut sich daher auf weitere Anfragen von Her-stellern und Produzenten, um mit dem erarbeiteten Fachwissen bzw. Erfahrungen und technologi-schem Know-how insbesondere die KMU der deutschen Textilindustrie beratend zu unterstützen und ggf. gemeinsame Allianzen/Kooperationen zu schmieden.

Bereits jetzt schon steht das ITM mit mehreren Industriepartnern in Kontakt, um die Technologie zur Fertigung von textilen 3D-gestrickten Masken schnell in die Serienproduktion zu überführen und dar-über hinaus diese anforderungsgerechten textilen Produkte auch zeitnah als nach den geltenden Standards bzw. Richtlinien zugelassene Schutzmasken anzubieten.

Für die zielführenden Untersuchungen mit variablen Materialkombinationen zur weiteren Op-timierung der unterschiedlichen Maskenvarianten wurden dem ITM bereits verschiedenste Versuchsmaterialien kostenfrei zur Verfügung gestellt. Das ITM bedankt sich hierfür bei folgenden Firmen: EMS-CHEMIE AG, Gebrüder Otto GmbH & Co. KG, TWD Fibres GmbH und W. Zimmermann GmbH & Co. KG.

  • Monforts Textilmaschinen GmbH & Co. KG is expanding the team at its Advanced Technology Center (ATC) in Mönchengladbach, Germany, with the appointment of Jonas Beisel as a new textile technologist.

Having studied textile engineering in both Germany and China and taken an internship with Adidas before deciding he wanted to work in a more technical environment, 30-year-old Jonas will be transferring his theoretical knowledge into practice for customers at the ATC and at the plants of Monforts customers around the world.

“I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone at the forthcoming ITMA show in Barcelona as I familiarise myself with the fast-moving environment of the industry,” he said. “It’s good timing for me that ITMA,  which only takes place every four years, is happening now, so soon after my appointment.”

“The Monforts ATC has been extremely busy conducting customer trials and developing new processes recently, so it’s great to welcome Jonas to the technologists’ team,” added Monforts Vice President Klaus Heinrichs.

Peter D. Dornier, member of the Executive Board of the VDMA Textile Machinery Federation and Chairman of the Walter Reiners Foundation for the Promotion of Young Engineers, honours five young talents. Numerous entrepreneurs and managers from the German textile machinery industry took part in the award ceremony at the Digital Capability Center (DCC) in Aachen, Germany.

The prizewinner in the dissertation category, Dr.- Ing. Benjamin Weise, comes from the Institute of Textile Technology at RWTH Aachen University (ITA). He has dealt with a complex production process for the manufacture of modified multifilament yarns, which offers new perspectives for the development and manufacture of textile charge carriers.

Peter D. Dornier, member of the Executive Board of the VDMA Textile Machinery Federation and Chairman of the Walter Reiners Foundation for the Promotion of Young Engineers, honours five young talents. M.Sc. Susanne Fischer, winner of the Master's thesis category, has systematically and comprehensively solved the challenging task of integrating motion sensors into a finger glove at Reutlingen University.
The 2018 creativity award winners are team Mr. Jan Merlin Abram and Mr. Alon Tal from ITA Aachen as well as Mr. Eric Otto from the Institute for Textile Machinery and High-Performance Textile Materials Technology (ITM) in Dresden. The students Abram and Tal have developed a guideline for the design of hybrid morphing textiles. In addition to the classic functions in conventional and, in particular, composite applications, locally defined, functionally effective joint, torsion, expansion and compression mechanisms can be integrated into the textile.

The prizewinner Otto is awarded for a concept study for the development of a circular knitting machine with a variable diameter needle cylinder, which can lead to further flexibility in the circular knitting process.

Dresdner Wissenschaftlerin mit Manfred-Hirschvogel-Preis 2018 geehrt

Frau Dr.-Ing. Iris Kruppke, wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Institut für Textilmaschinen und Textile Hochleistungswerkstofftechnik (ITM) der TU Dresden, wurde am 16. Juni 2018 zum Tag der Fakultät Maschinenwesen der TU Dresden mit dem Manfred-Hirschvogel-Preis geehrt. Der Preis ist mit 5.000 EUR dotiert und wird seit 2013 jährlich an allen TU9-Universitäten - den neun führenden technischen Universitäten in Deutschland - für die beste Promotion des zurückliegenden Jahres im Bereich Maschinenbau vergeben.

Frau Dr.-Ing. Iris Kruppke, wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Institut für Textilmaschinen und Textile Hochleistungswerkstofftechnik (ITM) der TU Dresden, wurde am 16. Juni 2018 zum Tag der Fakultät Maschinenwesen der TU Dresden mit dem Manfred-Hirschvogel-Preis geehrt. Der Preis ist mit 5.000 EUR dotiert und wird seit 2013 jährlich an allen TU9-Universitäten - den neun führenden technischen Universitäten in Deutschland - für die beste Promotion des zurückliegenden Jahres im Bereich Maschinenbau vergeben.

Im Rahmen ihrer Dissertation zum Thema „Entwicklung von Methoden zur Realisierung von maßgeschneiderten Adhäsionseigenschaften von faserbasierten Hochleistungswerkstoffen für Composites“ setzte sich Frau Dr. Kruppke mit der Oxifluorierung als Oberflächenbehandlungs-methode auseinander. Dieses hocheffiziente Verfahren, das zur Oberflächenfunktionalisierung eingesetzt wird, soll zukünftig insbesondere bei der Entwicklung neuer maßgeschneideter Carbonfasern zum Einsatz kommen. Frau Dr. Kruppke gelang es, das Thema der Oxifluorierung zum maßgeschneiderten Grenzschichtdesign von Carbonfasern im Rahmen der großen Forschungsinitiative „C3 - Carbon Concrete Composites“ innerhalb des BMBF-Programms „Zwanzig20 - Partnerschaft für Innovation“ mit starker Industriebeteiligung sehr erfolgreich weiter voran zu treiben.

Die Ergebnisse ihrer Dissertation, die Frau Dr. Kruppke Ende März mit der Bestnote „summa cum laude“ verteidigte, sind von enormer Bedeutung für die Herstellung von Faserverbundwerkstoffen. Sie eröffnen die Möglichkeit, Hochleistungsfasern in Hochleistungsstrukturen umzuwandeln. Solche Entwicklungen erfordern eine Anpassung der vorliegenden Grenzflächen dieser Hochleistungsfasern an neue polymerbasierte, z. B. thermoplastische und anorganische Matrixsysteme. Die besonderen Publikationsleistungen lassen erwarten, dass die bisher erzielten Resultate weiterhin als fester Bestandteil in die zukünftige industrienahe Carbonfaserforschung eingehen und somit ein neues Forschungsgebiet erschließen.

Gerade im wissenschaftlichen Bereich des Maschinenbauwesens sind Frauen in leitender Position bedauerlicherweise immer noch selten zu finden. Mit der erneuten Auszeichnung beweisen die Wissenschaftlerinnen des ITM ihr enormes wissenschaftliches Know-how, welches sie am ITM dank der exzellenten Infrastruktur erlangen und deren Ergebnisse auf renommierten nationalen und internationalen Konferenzen regelmäßig offeriert werden. Bereits 2017 wurde eine weitere Wissenschaftlerin des ITM mit dem Bertha Benz-Preis für ihre herausragende Promotion zur Entwicklung eines neuartigen Verfahrens zur Herstellung metallischer 3D-Strukturen auf Webmaschinen ausgezeichnet.

Die Frank Hirschvogel Stiftung hat 2013 zum ersten Mal den Manfred Hirschvogel Preis verliehen. Der Preis wird zu Ehren des Lebenswerks von Dr. Manfred Hirschvogel vergeben.
Der Preis ist mit 5.000 EUR dotiert und wird seit 2013 jährlich an allen TU9-Universitäten - den neun führenden technischen Universitäten in Deutschland - für die beste Promotion des zurückliegenden Jahres im Bereich Maschinenbau vergeben.

Im Rahmen seines zweitägigen Antrittsbesuchs in Sachsen war Bundespräsident Frank-Walter Steinmeier am 14. November 2017 an der TU Dresden zu Gast. Gemeinsam mit seiner Frau Elke Büdenbender informierte er sich vor Ort über den prämierten Zukunftswerkstoff Carbonbeton.

Dabei überzeugte sich das Bundespräsidentenpaar in vertiefenden Gesprächen mit Dresdner Wissenschaftlern von den ökologischen, ökonomischen und gesellschaftlichen Vorteilen des innovativen Verbundwerkstoffes. Mithilfe der zahlreichen Demonstratoren, die das Material von der Entstehung bis zum fertigen Produkt darstellen, konnten die besondere Leichtigkeit und Formbarkeit von Carbonbeton eindrucksvoll veranschaulicht werden.

Die Weichen für den Erfolg des Carbonbetons wurden bereits 1993 von Professor Offermann an der TU Dresden als Erfinder des Textilbetons gestellt. Aus dieser Vision entstand der erste Sonderforschungsbereich, welcher maßgeblich von der Innovation des ITM geprägt war. Gemeinsam haben die drei prämierten Carbonbetonforscher Cherif, Offermann und Curbach die Forschungsaktivitäten zum Einsatz von Carbon als textile Bewehrung im Beton in zahlreichen weiteren interdisziplinären Forschungsprojekten stetig vorangetrieben. Schon seit 2006 werden deutschland- sowie weltweit alte Bauwerke, oder auch riesige Silos mit Carbonbeton verstärkt.

Der Baustoff Carbonbeton stellt also nicht nur eine Innovation für den Standort Dresden dar, sondern wird weltweit immer wichtiger. Darüber hinaus fördert seit 2014 das Bundeministerium für Bildung und Forschung den gegründeten Verein C³ – Carbon Concrete Composite e. V. mit einem Gesamtprojektvolumen von ca. 80 Millionen Euro. Der C³ e. V. ist ein interdisziplinäres Netzwerk aus mehr als 150 Partnern aus den Bereichen Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft und Verbänden, die gemeinsam die Einführung des Materials auf dem Markt vorantreiben. Wissenschaftler des Instituts für Textilmaschinen und Textile Hochleistungswerkstofftechnik der TU Dresden bearbeiten mehrere Teilvorhaben federführend und sind in weiteren Teilvorhaben maßgeblich als Projektpartner integriert.

Berlin / Frankfurt am Main, 2 November 2017 – Ms. Regina Brückner, Managing Associate of Brückner Trockentechnik, is the new chairperson of the VDMA Textile Machinery Association. The businesswoman from Leonberg was elected at the members’ meeting of the Association in Berlin. The new executive board is completed with Ms. Verena Thies, Thies Textilmaschinen, and Mr. Fritz P. Mayer, Karl Mayer Textilmaschinenfabrik, who were elected as vice chairpersons.

After her election, Regina Brückner stated: „I am pleased to have Ms. Thies and Mr. Mayer by my side, the two chairpersons who complement each other very well. Mr. Mayer is an entrepreneurial personality with decades of experience which he is meanwhile bringing in as the president of CEMATEX, the European Committee of Textile Machinery Manufacturers.  Ms. Thies assumed responsibility in the family company early on and has been working for the traditional company Thies in international textile machinery business since 2009.”
