Hochschule Reutlingen: Future Mobility Werkschau Winter 2022

Studierende des Studiengangs Transportation Interior Design der Hochschule Reutlingen haben sich ein Semester lang intensiv in Präsenz und mit digitalen Arbeits- und Kollaborationsmethoden mit Fragen zukünftiger Mobilität beschäftigt. Ihre Ergebnisse zum Thema „open space - der Camper der Zukunft“ präsentieren die Studierenden nun live online.

Camping boomt – der Urlaub mit dem Camper ist in und verspricht auch in Pandemiezeiten Flexibilität, Freiheit und Unabhängigkeit. Laut Caravaning Industrie Verband (CIVD) hat sich die Zahl der Neuzulassungen in den vergangen vier Jahren mehr als verdoppelt. Camper sind begehrte Fahrzeuge für unbeschwerte Urlaube. Rein in den Camper und einfach mal schnell aus dem Alltag entfliehen? Das Prinzip ist, nicht erst seit knapp 80.000 Neuzulassungen im Jahr 2021 (CIVD), bekannt und bewährt.

Studierende des Studiengangs Transportation Interior Design haben sich im Wintersemester 2021/2022 im Kooperationsprojekt „open space“ mit der Firma Rocket Camper aus Remshalden intensiv mit neuen, innovativen Nutzungsmöglichkeiten und Konzepten für Wohnmobile und Camper auseinandergesetzt.

Im Mittelpunkt stand dabei die Frage, wie clevere Verwandlungslösungen Räume vergrößern, individuell erlebbar machen und das Alltags- oder Urlaubsleben bereichern und erleichtern können. Gefragt waren Ideen zur Raum-Erweiterung und Strukturierung unter Einsatz von smarten Oberflächen. Basierend auf Analysen aktueller Lifestyle Szenarien ging es für die Studierenden vor allem um die Fragestellung, welche neuen Aufgaben ein solch innovativer Camper übernehmen und damit einen Mehrwert für seinen Nutzer bieten kann.

Ein Camper als mitwachsendes Raumwunder für Patchworkfamilien? Ein Camper mit individuellen Möglichkeiten für Hundebesitzer? Ein Camper als Arbeitsplatz? Ein Camper, der Stress reduziert und das Leben bereichert? Wie kann die Umgebung nach drinnen geholt werden? Smarte Oberflächen, die beim Fokussieren helfen und welches Thema spielt dabei das autonome Fahrzeug?

Radici Yarn certified to ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems

Over 400 employees work hard every day to improve the environmental performance of Radici Yarn’s site. Through teamwork and continuous improvement in energy efficiency, Radici Yarn has obtained ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems certification, which attests to the organization’s commitment to contain and progressively reduce energy consumption.

Radici Yarn, one of the companies in the RadiciGroup Advanced Textile Solutions Business Area, is engaged in the production and sale of polyamide 6 polymer, PA6 and PA66 continuous filament and staple yarn, and other synthetic fibres, including products made of recycled or bio-based materials.

All the processes - polymerization and spinning (Villa d'Ogna plant), as well as warping and draw-warping (Ardesio plant) - are run under constant monitoring with the goal of achieving maximum energy efficiency and lower consumption. Both sites are powered by two hydroelectric power plants owned by Geogreen, a RadiciGroup partner and energy supplier. The share of energy consumption from renewable sources and reduced environmental impact (natural gas) sources  is constantly increasing.

The energy issue has always been a priority for Radici Yarn, whose products serve numerous sectors, including automotive, clothing and furnishings.

"Already at the beginning of the 1990s, Radici Yarn started investing in cogeneration, the simultaneous production of electricity and steam,” pointed out Laura Ravasio, energy manager of Radici Yarn SpA. “We have recently started up an advanced trigeneration plant – a highly efficient system that produces not only electricity and steam, but also chilled water for our production processes. One of the first results recorded in 2021 was a 30% reduction in water consumption. Thus, ISO 50001 certification seemed like the next logical step to take in formalizing a long-term approach to energy.”

The ISO 50001 certification, which is voluntary and valid for a period of three years, was added to the ISO 14001 Environmental and ISO 9001 Quality Management system certifications previously achieved by Radici Yarn.

JEC World 2022 postponed

After thorough consultation with the exhibitors and partners of the event, JEC Group has decided to postpone the 2022 edition of JEC World. The world’s leading composites event will now take place from May 3rd to 5th, 2022, at the same venue Paris Nord Villepinte, as well as online via the JEC World Connect digital platform.

Even after the show, via the JEC Web TV, unique content will be available to extend the reach of the event.

“Our main concern is to create the best possible conditions for our participants for successful networking, inspiration and business success. With a postponement of eight weeks we can enable this and offer to the industry the event it deserves. Taking the decision now, after consultation of all exhibitors, was necessary to give them planning and preparation visibility,” adds Thomas Lepretre, VP Events, Sales and Operations.

Autoneum: Revenue development in 2021 impacted by semiconductor shortage

Business of the automobile industry and its suppliers was impacted in 2021 by the worldwide shortage of semiconductors and the correspondingly restrained development of production volumes, which was about the same as the previous year. Autoneum’s revenue in local currencies declined slightly by 1.6% compared with the previous year. In Swiss francs, Group revenue decreased by 2.3% to CHF 1 700.4 million year-on-year. For 2021 as a whole, an EBIT margin of a little more than 3% and a free cash flow of around CHF 70 million are expected.

Business of the automobile industry and its suppliers was impacted in 2021 by the worldwide shortage of semiconductors and the correspondingly restrained development of production volumes, which was about the same as the previous year. Autoneum’s revenue in local currencies declined slightly by 1.6% compared with the previous year. In Swiss francs, Group revenue decreased by 2.3% to CHF 1 700.4 million year-on-year. For 2021 as a whole, an EBIT margin of a little more than 3% and a free cash flow of around CHF 70 million are expected.

Owing to the global shortage of semiconductors, automobile production for 2021 as a whole increased by 2.5% to 76.4 million vehicles and was thus only slightly higher than the previous year’s level. Autoneum’s revenue in local currencies declined by 1.6% year-on-year. Although revenue developed better than the market in three of four regions, the Company lagged slightly behind the global market trend. On the one hand, this was due to the fact that some vehicle models of US manufacturers predominantly supplied by Autoneum were disproportionately affected by the shortage of semiconductors, and, on the other hand, due to the lower share of Business Group Asia in Autoneum’s total revenue. The consolidated revenue in Swiss francs fell by 2.3% to CHF 1 700.4 million compared to the previous year (2020: CHF 1 740.6 million).

Revenue development in the Europe, Asia and SAMEA regions well above market
Business Group Europe recorded a decline in revenue of 1.6% in local currencies and was thus well above the market trend, which saw production fall by 4.4%. By contrast, revenue for Business Group North America in local currencies dropped by 7.2% and was thus well below the market, which saw a small increase of 0.1%. The vehicle models of US customers predominantly supplied by Autoneum were disproportionately affected by the semiconductor shortage. Consequently, Autoneum lagged behind the market trend in this region. Asia was the market least impacted by the semiconductor shortage in financial year 2021. Accordingly, in 2021 Asian automobile production saw good growth of 5.1%. Business Group Asia once again exceeded the overall Asian market, with revenue growth of 6.7% in local currencies. Business Group SAMEA (South America, the Middle East and Africa) significantly exceeded the market trend in financial year 2021.

Although 8.6% more vehicles were produced in the region compared to the prior year, Business Group SAMEA’s revenue rose by an impressive 24.8% on an inflation- and currency-adjusted basis. This growth was largely supported by high-volume programs in Turkey and South Africa.

Thanks to better than expected revenue at the end of 2021, Autoneum is in the upper range of its guidance, which was adjusted in October. Based on provisional figures, Autoneum expects an EBIT margin of slightly more than 3% and a free cash flow of around CHF 70 million for 2021.

Yarns will enter into PET yarn production for the first time and offer a portfolio of PET yarns by the third quarter of 2022. These will be available for automotive applications alongside its EqoCycle® recycled-based PA6 yarns.

AZL: Gemeinsames Projekt zu Batteriegehäusen mit 46 Industriepartnern

Gemeinsam mit insgesamt 46 Industriepartnern konnten mehrere, verschiedene Konzepte für Kunststoff-basierte Multimaterial-Batteriegehäuse erarbeitet werden, mit denen deutliche Einsparpotentiale bei Gewicht und Kosten möglich sind. Im Projektverlauf kristallisierten sich zwei wichtige Kernthemen heraus, die in Folgeprojekten gesondert behandelt werden sollen: Bodenaufprallschutz und Feuerbeständigkeit. Diese zwei Folgeprojekte starten am 26. Januar 2022. Ein Projekt zur Entwicklung und Realisierung von Prototypen für Mitte nächsten Jahres 2022 ist in Planung.

Batteriegehäuse gehören zu den Schlüsselkomponenten in E-Fahrzeugen und werden derzeit in der Regel aus Aluminium hergestellt. Genau diese Komponente analysierte das AZL in dem jetzt durchgeführten Projekt mit einem großen Konsortium aus Automobilherstellern, Automobilzulieferern, Rohstoffherstellern und Maschinenherstellern. „Der enorme Zuspruch aus der Industrie unterstreicht die Relevanz des Themas“, freut sich der Projektleiter Warden Schijve, der zudem sehr zufrieden mit dem Verlauf und den Ergebnissen ist. Schließlich lassen sich bis zu 36 % des Gewichts und bis zu 20 % der Kosten einsparen, wenn anstelle herkömmlicher Lösungen Multi-Material-Verbunde auf Basis von Kunststoffen zum Einsatz kommen.

Um zu den Ergebnissen zu gelangen, hat das AZL unter Mitwirkung seiner Partnerunternehmen, zu denen unter anderem Audi, Asahi Kasei, Covestro, DSM, EconCore, Faurecia, Formosa, Hengrui, Hutchinson, IPTE, Johns Manville, Magna, Marelli und Teijin, gehörten, zunächst fünf Subkomponenten eines Batteriegehäuses definiert: die Gehäusewanne, die Bodenschutzplatte, den Crash-Rahmen, die Querbalken und den Gehäusedeckel. Außerdem analysierten die Partner insgesamt 44 marktrelevante, existierende Serienkomponenten und Konzepte genauer und erstellten eine umfangreiche Übersicht über die verschiedenen Standards sowie Anforderungen auf nationaler, internationaler und OEM-Ebene. Prämisse dabei war, gleiche oder gar bessere mechanische Kennwerte zu erreichen als bei herkömmlichen Lösungen. So sollten beispielsweise mindestens gleiche Steifigkeiten, Sicherheiten bei seitlichem Aufprall, EMI-Abschirmung sowie Flammschutz vorhanden sein. Um nun die alternativen Lösungen zu ermitteln, entwickelte das AZL 20 Designkonzepte mit unterschiedlichen Materialkombinationen. Zur Analyse und Auslegung der verschiedenen Konzepte wurden mehr als 500 FEM-Modelle erstellt und über 1.500 CAE-Simulationen durchgeführt.

Während sich Folgeprojekt 1 mit einer anwendungsbezogenen Testmethode und der Untersuchung der Sicherheit verschiedener Materialkombinationen für den Bodenaufprallschutz beschäftigt, steht in Folgeprojekt 2 die Flammresistenz verschiedener Materialien und Materialkombinationen im Vordergrund. Ziel ist es Prüfverfahren zu entwickeln, die es erlauben, die Aufprall-/Feuerbeständigkeit auf Materialebene unter Berücksichtigung der spezifischen Anforderungen an ein Batteriegehäuse im Vergleich zu Standardmaterialien zu untersuchen.

Hexcel Partners with METYX for High Performance Carbon Pultrusion Technology

Hexcel Corporation (NYSE: HXL) is collaborating with METYX to manufacture high-performance carbon pultruded profiles made from polyurethane (PU) resin and unidirectional carbon fiber for the wind energy market.

The two companies have joined forces to develop technology that builds on Hexcel expertise in polyurethanes for the ski industry combined with its strength in providing high-performance composites to wind energy customers and expanding to other markets for composite applications. METYX is a manufacturer of high-performance NCF and woven glass and carbon, consumables, core and fabric kitting, molds, prototypes, and components for industries including wind energy, marine, automotive, rail and construction.

Two Bergamo companies of excellence played the leading roles in the conception and realization of this highly innovative fashion-sport garment: RadiciGroup, a world leading producer of chemical intermediates, polyamide polymers, high-performance engineering polymers and advanced textile solutions, and DKB, a company specializing in technical sportswear with the same brand name.

The ski suit, consisting of jacket and trousers, is fashioned with a fabric made of RENYCLE, a RadiciGroup yarn obtained from mechanically recycled polyamide (nylon), which affords notable savings in energy and water consumption, as well as lower CO2 emissions. In addition, the suit’s padding and numerous accessories, such as zippers, Velcro, buttons and thread, are also made of polyamide.

This achievement was made possible by the great teamwork of RadiciGroup and DKB on the research and development of chemically compatible materials that can be used in special applications requiring high technical performance. The end result is an almost mono-material garment that significantly facilitates end-of-life recycling. It can be more easily converted into polymers for use in the manufacture of ski boot components and bindings, in addition to applications in the automotive and furnishing industries, or in any other sector requiring the characteristics of high performance polyamides.

The ski suit by RadiciGroup is thus an all-round application of ecodesign and circular economy principles to fashion and garment making, which justifies the claim “Una sostenibilità all’altezza delle nostre montagne” [Sustainability worthy of our mountains] written in a logo patch on the inside of the jacket.

Textil-recycling Technologies
Recently, ANDRITZ acquired Laroche SAS, a leading supplier of fiber processing technologies such as opening, blending, dosing, airlay web forming, textile waste recycling, and decortication of bast fibers. The product portfolio further complements and increases the ANDRITZ Nonwoven product range. One focus of this product range lies on complete recycling lines for post-consumer and industrial textile waste to produce fibers for re-spinning and/or nonwoven end uses.

Needlepunch Technologies
Driven by the dynamic market for durable nonwovens, ANDRITZ has developed an elliptical pre-cylinder tacker – the PA3000. With this modern machine, ANDRITZ is responding to customer demands for higher capacities and lighter products. The PA3000 is an optimized cylinder pre-needleloom, which offers greater speeds and widths and has been specially developed for lighter webs. There is no friction between the web and the rolls, and there are no issues with the visual appearance.

ANDRITZ is also focusing on its latest needling technology for producing veloured felts, mainly for applications in the automotive industry.

In addition, ANDRITZ will be presenting the next generation of its batt-forming technology, the ProWin system. ProWin is a further development of ProDynTM and ProWidTM, which have achieved a high level of acceptance on the market with around 200 systems installed. This technology improves the current weight-profiling options and increases the actual production capacity.

Production of Bio-Wipes
For many years now, ANDRITZ has offered different nonwoven processes, such as spunlace and Wetlace, with one goal in mind: reduction and elimination of plastic raw materials while maintaining the high quality of the desired product properties. The latest development in this field is the ANDRITZ neXline wetlace CP line. This is a fully engineered production line, combining the benefits of wetlaid and drylaid technologies to produce a new generation of biodegradable wipes. This process achieves high performance entirely with plastic-free raw materials. The added benefit of using a blend of fibers, like wood pulp, short-cut cellulosic fibers, viscose, cotton, hemp, bamboo, or linen, without chemical additives, results in a 100% sustainable fabric.

In order to achieve high acoustic performance at minimum weight and maximum sustainability, Autoneum is continuously advancing its textile product portfolio. When it comes to components for the vehicle interior, for example, standard thermoplastic felts excel through their acoustic absorption, robustness and environmental friendliness. However, since felt-based materials are generally less voluminous and moldable as foam components, they require more weight to thoroughly fill the areas of varying thickness between the surface of the component and the vehicle’s body-in-white. In contrast, Autoneum’s Flexi-Loft technology is significantly lighter, more flexible and more adaptable than standard felts. In addition, the fiber-based material is versatile and clearly outperforms current foam products in terms of sustainability.

Thanks to its blend of recycled cotton and polyester fibers, Flexi-Loft substantially reduces component weight while improving geometrical adaptability and acoustic performance, especially in areas of low thickness. Thanks to the specific properties of the fibers, Flexi-Loft enables a precise adaptation to a wide variety of vehicle bodies, thereby improving the noise-insulating qualities of the respective product. Even at low weight, Flexi-Loft covers a wide range of material thicknesses, thus proving to be an ideal decoupling material for interior components with complex shapes such as inner dashes and automotive carpets. As a lightweight, flexible and sustainable alternative to both standard felts and foam, Flexi-Loft distinguishes itself by its versatile application in combination with existing Autoneum technologies such as Hybrid-Acoustics and Prime-Light. Moreover, the material helps to reduce odor and dust inside the vehicle.

Flexi-Loft consists of at least 50% recycled cotton fibers, and cut-offs generated during the manufacturing process are reclaimed, processed and then reused in the production of new felt blanks.

Autoneum is already using Flexi-Loft worldwide as an insulator for various carpets, inner dashes and other acoustic components based on its Prime-Light technology. The application of the material as an effective decoupler in inner dashes made of Hybrid-Acoustics will be launched on the European market in 2023.

SGL Carbon: Q3 2021 confirms encouraging upward trend

Following consolidated sales of €241.5 million in Q1 2021 and €255.2 million in Q2 2021, Q3 2021 confirms SGL Carbon's encouraging sales performance with €246.8 million. Due to increasing demand from almost all market segments, Group sales increased to a total of €743.5 million in the first nine months of the fiscal year (9M 2020: €683.5 million). This corresponds to an increase of 8.8% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Almost all business units contributed to the positive sales development. As largest business unit with a 44.7% share of Group sales, Graphite Solutions (GS) contributed €332.7 million to Group sales in the first nine months of 2021 (9M 2020: €308.0 million). The sales increase of 8.0% is based in particular on the positive development of the important market segments Semiconductor & LED as well as Automotive & Transportation. The business units Carbon Fibers and Composite Solutions contributed €244.7 million (9M 2020: €223.4 million) and €92.1 million (9M 2020: €60.7 million), respectively, to Group sales and benefited primarily from increased demand from the automotive industry. Compared to the previous year, sales increased by 9.5% in Carbon Fibers and by 51.7% in Composite Solutions. Only the Process Technology business unit, with sales down 4.9% to €62.1 million, was not yet able to participate in the general economic upward trend.

Despite the existing worldwide Covid, we were able to welcome a great number of well-known faces as well as meet new contacts, among them the most important nonwovens producers from across the world in all application areas: hygiene and lightweight nonwovens, technical textiles and needled nonwovens including geotextiles, filter media and automotive. The interest in using resource saving plant engineering, energy saving and the processing of natural fibres remains.

DiloGroup would like to thank all customers and interested parties for visiting the Dilo booth in Geneva. Dilo presented its latest developments in industry 4.0. Systematic plant monitoring and analysis of machine data allows simplified operation and more effective production. This smart system was illustrated with the aid of live analysis of the performance, quality and availability parameters of the production lines in our Textile Research Centre. The new production systems Hyperpunch Alpha, HyperTex and 3D-Lofter were explained with the aid of videos which led to a very positive responsive from the many different producers which are interested in running trials at the Dilo Textile Research Centre to further explore these subjects. These highlights and further new developments were the basis for fruitful technical discussions.

VDMA: Top young talent with cutting-edge topics

The Chairman of the Walter Reiners-Stiftung foundation of the VDMA Textile Machinery Association, Peter D. Dornier has awarded prizes to three successful young engineers. The award-winning works provide practical solutions on the topic of circular economy. For example, the recycling of carbon fibres, which are used to produce lightweight components for the automotive industry. Or the environmentally friendly production of yarns from crab shells. Another topic was medical applications: The processing of ultra-fine yarns into stents for aortic repair. The award ceremony took place online on 9 November as part of the Aachen-Dresden-Denkendorf International Textile Conference.  

With a creativity prize, endowed with 3,000 euros, the foundation honoured the diploma thesis of Irina Kuznik, TU Dresden. She used a creative approach to realise solutions for processing chitosan into fibre yarn.

Mr Kai-Chieh Kuo was awarded the diploma/master's thesis promotion prize of 3,500 euros. With his master's thesis, which was written at RWTH Aachen University, Mr Kuo contributes to the production of vital components used in medicine. The stents made of ultra-fine yarns are made possible by an innovative modification of the classic tube weaving process.

The Walter Reiners Foundation rewarded the doctoral thesis of Dr. Martin Hengstermann with the promotional prize in the dissertation category, endowed with 5,000 euros. The thesis deals with the production of recycled carbon fibres. These can be used to produce lightweight components for motor vehicle and aircraft construction or the wind energy sector.

New Prize Sustainability / Circular Economy
The environmental conditions of the textile industry and machine construction are changing. Topics such as climate protection and the circular economy are becoming central. From this perspective, the board of the Walter Reiners Foundation has decided to further develop the foundation's prize system.

In 2022, the foundation will for the first time offer a prize with a focus on design / sustainability. Peter D. Dornier, Chairman of the Foundation, explained: "Already in the design phase, one can set the parameters so that a textile product can be reintroduced after use into the economic cycle for a high-quality application. For example, through the appropriate use of materials and finishing. We are looking for solutions for resource-saving design, technology and manufacturing processes."

The Company still intends to pay a dividend to shareholders of at least 30% of the profit attributable to Autoneum shareholders.

Autoneum adjusts outlook for the current financial year

Due to the significantly reduced market expectations for global light vehicle production, Autoneum lowers its revenue and earnings forecast for the full year 2021. This results from bottlenecks in the supply chain of vehicle manufacturers, in particular the ongoing shortage of semiconductors.

Although demand from end customers continues to be high in all regions, global light vehicle production in the second half of 2021 is expected to be around 10% lower than in the first half-year due to bottlenecks in the supply chain of vehicle manufacturers, mainly with regard to semiconductors.

Due to market developments, revenue in the second half-year 2021 is now anticipated to be correspondingly lower than in the first semester.

As a result of the lower revenue development in the second half of the year, an EBIT margin of 2-3% (previously: 4-5%) is now expected for the full year 2021. Free cash flow is estimated to be in the range of CHF 60 to 70 million.

Efforts towards supporting customers to achieve circular objectives are a priority within the Hygiene Fibers Group. This is reflected in the recycled fibers expertise deployed across the segment. Monforts: Automated finishing at Knopf’s Sohn

Knopf’s Sohn, a contract finisher of technical textiles, has installed a fully automated Montex stenter at its plant in Helmbrechts, Germany.
Knopf’s Sohn is processing technical textiles for the automotive, aerospace, home furnishings and workwear markets, based on wool, cellulose, polyamide and polyester fabrics, along with elastane blends, in weights of 80-800gsm.

The Montex machinery range is constantly being upgraded to meet evolving customer needs for greater automation, ease of operation and energy optimisation. The latest ten chamber line at Knopf’s Sohn, with a working width of up to 2.0 metres, was engineered to specific requirements in order to accelerate the company’s move to fully automatic control of its production, and high scaffolding was required for its installation.

The line benefits from two integrated ECO Booster modules to provide high energy savings. These compact, air-to-air heat exchangers, installed within the roof structure of the line, exploit energy from the exhaust gas to preheat up to 60% of the incoming fresh air entering the stenter.

The use of a single ECO Booster unit has been calculated to save up to 35% in energy costs, based on fixation processes. Fully automatic operation, set at the Monforts Qualitex control unit, ensures there is no additional burden on the machine operator.

The line is powered by Exxotherm indirect heating, which practically eliminates the yellowing which can be experienced during the treatment of certain polyamide and elastane-based fabrics, and is also equipped with a Conticlean circulating air filter system for constant high drying capacity.

Software
The latest Qualitex visualisation software offers operators reliability and easy control with its full HD multi-touch monitor and slider function, dashboard function with individual adaptation to operating states and faster access to comprehensive recipe data management.

With the Monformatic control system, the exact maintenance of the dwell time in combined treatment processes (drying and heat-setting) can be monitored. When the heat-setting point is reached, the fan speed is automatically adjusted, keeping energy consumption fully under control.

Polynova employs five sales staff and three in logistics, all of whom have a technical background. The company's own warehouse in Rothenburg also ensures the availability of the plastics.

"GRAFE fits perfectly into our product portfolio," says Thomas Weigl, co-owner and responsible for business development at the Swiss distribution company, whose employees recently underwent intensive training in Blankenhain. "Our customers come from the sports goods, housing technology, automotive supplier and medical technology sectors - there are many synergies with GRAFE." Weigl himself has extensive experience in the masterbatch sector and has worked for two companies in the industry - Sukano and Americhem - as managing director. "Swiss companies want Swiss contact persons. We speak the languages German, Italian and French, are on site in the shortest possible time, offer direct contact and understand the needs of the customers and the requirements of the market," he explains. "Polynova is thus faster, closer and more direct." "The Swiss market is large and important for us," reports Theuerkauf and Weigl explains the background: "There are over 300 plastics processors, many are family-run and very technically oriented. The origins of the companies are often in the watch industry and in the production of the smallest precision parts such as gear wheels. In addition, coffee machine manufacturers, medical technology providers and automotive suppliers are important market players. A large number of well-known OEMs are located here."

Even though there are already masterbatch manufacturers in the Alpine country, says the sales expert, no one has the know-how to adjust compounds and masterbatches as perfectly and precisely as the company from Thuringia. In addition to a complete range of colours on practically all plastic substrates, flame retardants, UV additives, thermal stabilisers or lubricants are further examples of the extensive product portfolio. GRAFE is one of the specialists in the modification of thermoplastics and is an innovation driver in the production of colour masterbatches. "The technical possibilities in terms of a state-of-the-art technical centre and production machinery, as well as one of the largest research and development departments in the industry, are also not to be found elsewhere on the Swiss market. Our task now is to bring these to the attention of domestic customers," says Thomas Weigl, co-owner of Polynova AG together with founder Renato R. Huebscher.
