Die Textildruckerei Mayer heißt von nun an “Mayer GmbH TechConcepts”. Das Unternehmen hat im Jahr seines 50-jährigen Bestehens die Umfirmierung vollzogen, die dem Wandel des Portfolios Rechnung trägt. Im Jahr 1974 war Unternehmensgründer Heinrich Mayer mit klassischem Textildruck in den Markt eingetreten. Heute bietet Mayer TechConcepts unter der Leitung von Michael Steidle, Schwiegersohn des Gründers, Lösungen im Bereich der Sensorik, Aktorik sowie 3D-Hartbeschichtungen an.

Zusammen mit seiner Frau Claudia führt er die Mayer GmbH TechConcepts, wie das Unternehmen offiziell seit Ende Februar 2024 heißt, in zweiter Generation. Textilien sind zwar weiterhin Teil des Portfolios, die Bandbreite wurde jedoch deutlich vergrößert. Beschichtet werden auch andere Materialien von Plastik und Metallen bis Kunstleder.

Das Unternehmen lebt von seinen technischen Lösungen. Neben Keramikbeschichtung sind das vor allem Flächenlösungen mit Sensorik, beispielsweise ein leicht formbares Material ausgestattet mit einem flächigen Drucksensor, welches bei medizinischen Geräten zum Einsatz kommt. Ein anderes Beispiel ist eine Flächenheizung, die durch Druck aktiviert wird.

Ende April zeigt Mayer TechConcepts auf der Techtextil in Frankfurt seine neusten Entwicklungen. Dazu gehören ultradünne, flexible Sensorflächen, die das Unternehmen im Endlosdruck herstellt. Sie eignen sich beispielsweise für eine automatische Abschaltlösung bei medizinischen Geräten. Mit Sensorik und Aktorik ausgestattete Flächenlösungen bis 1,6 m² finden außerdem als hochwertige und smarte Auto-Interieurs ihre Anwendung. Des Weiteren präsentiert das Unternehmen seine neuen Bio-Polyurethane, die Mayer TechConcepts für seine patentierte CERAPUR Keramikbeschichtung einsetzt.

From circular knitting machines and braiders via upgrades to digital solutions, Mayer & Cie. presented at ITMA 2023 a wide range of solutions that make circular knitting machines and braiding machines even more durable and thereby more valuable, for which the long-established firm received a positive visitor response.

From machinery manufacturer to solution provider
Three circular knitting machines – a Relanit 3.2 HS, an SF4-3.2 III and the OVJA 2.4 EM – and an MR-15/18C/Single Deck braiding machine took up about half the floor space of Mayer & Cie.’s ITMA stand. That reflected the weighting of the trade fair presentation. Along with high-tech circular knitting and braiding products the Mayer & Cie. focus at this year’s ITMA was on solutions that increase the value and durability of its machines. Including the digital platform knitlink, the new Control 5.0 machine control system, the camera-assisted error recognition system knithawk, almost a dozen upgrade kits for existing machines and the new oiler system Senso Blue RS.

Trade fair debut for Mayer & Cie. braiding machine
Mayer & Cie. also exhibited a braiding machine at ITMA for the first time. The company has integrated the braiding division at is Albstadt headquarters since 2019. “Braiding machines are a part of textile machinery,” said Mayer & Cie. Managing Partner Benjamin Maye, “but we nevertheless saw presenting the MR-15/18C/SD braider at ITMA as an experiment – and are satisfied with the result. The machine attracted a great deal of attention and we were able to make interesting contacts.”

A positive conclusion on ITMA 2023
Expectations of this year’s ITMA were moderate, Benjamin Mayer said. “War, high energy prices, inflation and recession are the signs of the times. Not even an ITMA is going to change that.” In addition, there had been serious problems with the issue of visas that had made it impossible for many potential visitors to attend the trade fair.

The Mayer & Cie. management therefore judged its success not by the general demand but by the positive visitor feedback. “For us that was an indicator of our future competitiveness,” said CEO Benjamin Mayer, “and we can definitely be sure of that with our developments.”

KARL MAYER GROUP will be presenting a WEFTTRONIC® II G at the ITMA with new features and upgrades for greater efficiency. This warp knitting machine with weft insertion produces lattice structures from high-strength polyester, which are firmly established in the construction industry in particular. With a working width of 213", it offers productivity and further advantages through design innovations. New features include weft thread tension monitoring, management and the new VARIO WEFT laying system. The component for the weft insertion aims at maximum flexibility. It allows the patterning of the weft yarn to be changed quickly and easily electronically, without mechanical intervention during yarn insertion and without limits on repeat lengths. In addition, there is less waste.

The KARL MAYER GROUP also supports its customers with well thought-out Care Solutions. The new support offers include retrofit packages for retrofitting control and drive technology for weft insertion and composite machines, and service packages that bundle various services. These include machine inspections and the replacement of all drive belts. The customer benefits from fixed prices that cover the costs of technician assignments, various discount options and transparent services.

A new solution for the vertical greening of cities is presented from the field of application for technical textiles. The core of the innovation is a grid textile produced on warp knitting machines with weft insertion by KARL MAYER Technische Textilien GmbH. The knitted lattice fabric is made of flax. It is used as a climbing aid for fast-growing plants, and after the greening phase, in autumn, it can be recycled together with these plants as biomass in pyrolysis plants to produce electricity and activated carbon. In summer, the planted sails lower the ambient temperature through evaporation effects. In addition, photosynthesis creates fresh air and binds CO2. Other important advantages are low soil requirements and flexible placement in public spaces. The greening system was developed by the company Micro Climate Cultivation, OMC°C, with the support of KARL MAYER Technische Textilien.

The KARL MAYER GROUP will also be exhibiting a sustainable composite solution made from natural fibres. The reinforcing textile of the innovative lightweight material is a multiaxial non-crimp fabric, which was also produced from the bio-based raw material flax on a COP MAX 4 from KARL MAYER Technische Textilien. The boatbuilding specialist GREENBOATS uses natural fibre composites to achieve sustainable products. The fact that it succeeds in this is shown, for example, by the Global Warming Potential (GWP): 0.48 kg of CO2 per kilogram of flax reinforcement compares with 2.9 kg of CO2 per kilogram of glass textile.

Auf rund 25 Quadratmetern präsentierte die Textildruckerei Mayer auf der Techtextil 2022 Interieur-Lösungen für Automobile und beleuchtetes Leder. Für den Lösungsschwerpunkt PSA, die persönliche Schutzausrüstung, stand ein Handschuh mit Stich- und Schnittschutz und gleichzeitig hoher Taktilität im Mittelpunkt. Den Klassiker, beschichtete Sitzmöbel für verschiedene Industriebereiche, stellte das Familienunternehmen, dessen Wurzeln im Textildruck liegen, in attraktiven Farben vor. Erst in den vergangenen zehn Jahren hat sich der Familienbetrieb zum Lösungsanbieter für technische Textilien gewandelt.

„Nach der Corona-bedingten Pause war es enorm wichtig, wieder eine direkte Rückmeldung des Marktes zu bekommen“, sagt Michael Steidle über seine Messepräsenz. „Ob man mit einer Entwicklung richtig liegt, wie die eigene Arbeit im Kontext der anderen Marktteilnehmer zu sehen ist, ob die Entwicklung marktfähig ist – die Antworten auf diese Fragen kann nur ein solches Branchenevent geben.“

„Oft baten unserer Techtextil-Besucher um eine Einschätzung, ob dies oder jenes machbar sei. Der nächste Schritt ist dann kundenseitig die Anwendung. Die Entwicklung wird meist bei uns als Lösungspartner gesehen. Das zeigt, dass die Nachfrage nach regionaler Entwicklungsexpertise definitiv gestiegen ist.“

Einen Grund hierfür sieht das Unternehmen im Wunsch nach kürzeren Wegen. Wer nur eine oder zwei Autostunden entfernt sei, könne eine andere Termin- und Liefertreue bieten als ein Lieferant in Übersee. „Die Entwicklung wird wieder regionaler“, so die Einschätzung von Michael Steidle. „Das ist eine Chance für uns Textilunternehmer in Deutschland.“

• Session "New Technologies for Pulp, Fibres and Yarns"

Cellulose fibres are a true material miracle as they offer a steadily expanding, broad range of applications. Meanwhile markets are driven by technological developments and policy frameworks, especially bans and restrictions on plastics, as well as an increasing number of sustainability requirements. The  presentations will provide valuable information on the various use-opportunities for cellulosic fibres through a policy overview, a special session on sustainability, recycling and alternative feedstocks, as well as the latest developments in pulp cellulosic fibres and yarns. In addition, examples of non-wovens,  packaging and composites will offer a look beyond the horizon of conventional application fields.

The extensive fifth conference session, “New Technologies for Pulp, Fibres and Yarns”, includes the participation of eight speakers and promises the reveal of various innovations and new approaches. These address the processing of pulp, fibres and yarn, with the aim of realizing most sustainable and efficient solutions. The broad spectrum of topics ranges from processing cellulose with ionic liquids, material farming and chemical modification of pulp to functionalised fibres for feel-good textiles.

India’s leading trade fair in technical textiles, nonwovens and composites, Techtextil India, is ready to make a comeback through its hybrid edition launch from 25 – 27 November 2021. With a series of live product demonstrations, insightful knowledge sessions and B2B networking opportunities, the multimodal trade fair will provide a strong avenue for technical textile professionals to reimagine their business potential.
 
After a successful grand edition in 2019, Techtexil India is all set to return for the very first time since the pandemic. The three-day exhibition will be hosted in a hybrid format from 25 – 27 November 2021, Bombay Exhibition Centre, Goregaon which will unite technical textile players from across its varied application areas. Top technical textile brands including JB Ecotex, PARK Nonwoven, Loyal Textiles Lenzing, Mehala, Meera Industries, amongst many others will showcase their latest products at the hybrid fair. Moreover, leading German brands exhibiting at Techtextil India 2021 will be hosted under the German pavilion.

The conjunction between the physical exhibition and the online business matchmaking platform will make way to a wider range of networking. Local and international visitors who are unable to attend the venue will be able to witness the exhibition virtually through the ‘MFI virtual app’ which will host live knowledge sessions and product demonstrations for visitors. The two-day multimodal trade fair allows the visitors to search for specific products like fibers, yarns, nonwovens, machinery, coated textiles with easy-to-use filters further to which they can share their query or connect directly with the respective exhibitors.

At the same time, visitors attending the venue will be welcomed under a well-organised physical exhibition following the government-authorised safety protocols of ‘MFI SafeConnect’. These protocols will enable visitors to engage in secure face-to-face interactions with exhibitors and witness the latest technical textile technologies and innovations in-person.

Alliance with the Government of Tamil Nadu
In a bid to strengthen indigenous production through the state and attract investors, the nodal agency for investment promotion and facilitation for the Government of Tamil Nadu – Guidance has signed up for Techtextil India 2021. Furthermore, technical textile players from Tamil Nadu such as Cyber Textiles India Pvt Ltd, Jayashree Spun Bond, Lenzing Ag India, Liester Technologies, Loyal Textile Mills Ltd, Milltex Engineers Pvt Ltd, Superfil Products Pvt Ltd, Uster Technologies (India) Pvt Ltd have also confirmed their participation for the exhibition.
Announcing a close co-operation with Messe Frankfurt India for the 2021 edition, Ms Pooja Kulkarni, IAS MD & CEO, Guidance Tamil Nadu, stated: “While there are several inherent advantages for the growth of technical textiles in Tamil Nadu specifically, many raw materials used in the production of sanitary products, artificial ligaments, seat belt webbings, airbags are still heavily imported. In this context, the alliance with Techtextil India Forum can help us reduce import dependency and bring investments in R&D, manufacturing, innovation by partnering with global technical textiles companies.”

With 50% of India’s textile mills in Tamil Nadu and complementary clusters of knitting, weaving and medical devices manufacturing in Coimbatore, and Tiruppur, the region provides immense opportunities for Meditech investments. Two petrochemical and refinery units – One in Cuddalore and another in Nagapattinam by CPCL is in the process of being established in Tamil Nadu. These units will enable availability of MMF raw material for the textile industry across the state. Hence, manufacturing in Tamil Nadu can be a win-win arrangement for investors as India provides access to the burgeoning market as well.

International expertise with German pavilion
Techtexil India 2021 edition will feature an exclusive German Pavilion showcasing products and technologies from top German manufacturers, including Autefa Solution Germany GmbH, DILO Systems GmbH, Emtec Electronic GmbH, Georg Sahm GmbH & Co, Karl Mayer Verwaltungsgesellschaft mbH, Merz Maschinenfabrik GmbH and Oerlikon Barmag Zweigniederlassung der Oerlikon Textile GmbH & Co.

At the Shanghaitex trade fair Mayer & Cie. China (MCN) exhibited its new machine for manufacturing three-thread fleece. The MFC 3.2 is the first in-house development by the German circular knitting machine manufacturer’s Chinese subsidiary. It produces light to heavy linings and is specially geared to processing polyester yarn. The MFC 3.2 will be available from spring 2020; the material it produces is used in sports- and leisurewear.

“Three-thread fleece linings are popular all over the world,” says Marcus Mayer, Mayer & Cie.’s technical director, “albeit with important regional differences. In Europe and America customers appreciate heavier, warm cotton fabrics, whereas in Asia light, fluffy fabrics made of mixed synthetic fibres are preferred. That is why the MFC 3.2 is a major addition to our Chinese portfolio.“

MFC 3.2: Tried and trusted basis, market-specific alignment
The new Chinese three-thread fleece machine is based on the established Mayer & Cie. MBF 3.2, the qualities of which deliver the goods in the MFC 3.2. They include the high quality of material on both sides of the fabric and the production of challenging weaves. At the same time, the Chinese Mayer & Cie. team attached importance to catering for local requirements, first and foremost processing polyester yarns. Thanks to cam parts developed in-house the new machine performs these tasks reliably and efficiently. At up to 30 rpm on a 30-inch diameter cylinder the MFC 3.2 produces three-thread fleece for sports- and leisurewear.

The MFC 3.2 is more than a three-thread fleece machine, however. A conversion kit transforms it into the MSC 3.2 II, the most popular machine in Mayer & Cie. China’s portfolio. The conversion works in both directions, which further upgrades the single jersey machine because “in the highly saturated Chinese single jersey market the fact that the MSC 3.2 II can be converted into a threethread fleece machine is an important selling point,” Managing Director Mayer notes.

For the circular knitting machine manufacturer Mayer & Cie. (MCT) this year’s ITMA ended with a satisfactory result. From 20 to 26 June 2019 the company had five machines on show at the leading industry trade fair in Barcelona. The industry leader’s focus was on sporting uses, with one exhibit dedicated to Mayer & Cie.’s innovative ideas. Digital offerings that Mayer & Cie. put together under the name knitlink rounded off the presentation. The platform includes a web shop, remote maintenance options and recording and evaluation of machine data for the customer and is to be further expanded in the future.

Der Albstädter Rundstrickmaschinenhersteller Mayer & Cie. (MCT) wird sich auf der diesjährigen Leitmesse der Branche, der Internationalen Textilmaschinen Ausstellung, kurz ITMA, unter dem Motto „Stay a winner. With Mayer & Cie.“ präsentieren. Der Fokus des Messeauftritts in Barcelona wird auf dem Thema Sport liegen. Sportbekleidung, sportliche Freizeitkleidung und Sportschuhe bestehen zunehmend aus rundgestrickten Stoffen. Das Traditionsunternehmen bedient diesen Trend mit den passenden Maschinen. Außerdem setzt Mayer & Cie. auf verbesserte Kundenerlebnisse, die durch konsequente Digitalisierung möglich werden.

Seit Jahren wächst der Bedarf an rundgestrickter Ware weltweit kontinuierlich. Ein wichtiger Wachstumstreiber ist der Sportartikel- und Sportmodebereich, zu dem auch Sportschuhe zählen. Laut Euromonitor ist dieses Marktsegment zwischen 2013 und 2017 jährlich um circa sieben Prozent gewachsen. Bereits 2017 schätzte Euromonitor den gesamten Marktwert auf rund 78 Milliarden US-Dollar. Leichte Synthetikfasern, immer neue Muster und attraktive Funktionalitäten sind die zentralen Anforderungen in diesem Bereich.

Mit seinem Maschinenportfolio, das als das umfangreichste der Branche gilt, kann Mayer & Cie. bereits viele Anforderungen bedienen. Leichte Mesh-Strukturen, wie oft in Laufshirts gewünscht, sind beispielsweise eine Spezialität der Interlockmaschine IG 3.2 QCe. Jacquardmaschinen aus der OVJA-Familie wiederum eignen sich auch für die Herstellung von Schuhoberstoffen. Gegenüber den herkömmlichen Herstellungsverfahren, Flachstricken und Kettenwirken, punktet Rundstrick mit Produktivität und deutlich geringeren Rüstzeiten.

„Weil wir der Meinung sind, dass im Bereich der Sport- und Freizeitbekleidung weiterhin viel Potenzial steckt, sind unsere Maschinenneuentwicklungen vornehmlich in diesem Bereich angesiedelt“, fasst Marcus Mayer die ITMA-Präsentation seines Unternehmens zusammen.

Seit Ende 2018 läuft die Serienproduktion der Spinnstrickmaschine Spinit 3.0 E. Sie kombiniert zwei bisher getrennte Prozesse, das Spinnen und das Stricken, in einer Maschine. Das spart Zeit, Platz und Energie im Vergleich zum herkömmlichen Herstellungsverfahren. Für diesen Ansatz hat Mayer & Cie. bereits mehrere Auszeichnungen gewonnen; die jüngste ist der Innovationspreis für Klima und Umwelt (IKU), den das Bundesumweltministerium (BMUB) und der Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie e.V. (BDI) alle zwei Jahre ausloben. Auf der ITMA präsentiert das Unternehmen seine Weiterentwicklungen an dieser Maschine.

Jenseits der Maschinenentwicklung hat sich Mayer & Cie. ein weiteres Ziel für die ITMA und danach gesetzt: das verbesserte Kundenerlebnis. Aktuell läuft die Digitalisierung des vielfältigen Kunden- und Maschinenwissens. Bereits auf der ITMA werden Kunden erste Ergebnisse sehen und testen können. Zum Ausprobieren bereitstehen werden der neue Webshop, verknüpft mit einem analogen Modell des Hochregallagers in Albstadt-Tailfingen, sowie die Maschinenwartung mittels Hololens.
