SABIC presents new Portfolio for Nonwovens at INDEX

SABIC has announced that the newly formed Hygiene & Healthcare segment of its Petrochemicals business will showcase its extensive portfolio of SABIC PURECARES™ polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) polymers for high-purity nonwovens and hygiene films at the upcoming INDEX™ Expo in Geneva, Switzerland, from October 19 through 22, 2021. The company will also present enabling solutions developed with partners to address the issue of plastic waste and support the transformation of the industry towards a circular economy with closed-loop initiatives and certified circular polymers under its TRUCIRCLE™ portfolio and services.

The company will also present enabling solutions developed with partners to address the issue of plastic waste and support the transformation of the industry towards a circular economy with closed-loop initiatives and certified circular polymers under its TRUCIRCLE™ portfolio and services.

During INDEX, SABIC will exhibit a wide range of PP polymers targeted at these needs. Highlights on display will include dedicated PP and PE grades for lightweight nonwoven fabrics using the latest spunbond and meltblown processes, and a new ultra-high melt flow PP product engineered for meltblown fibers in nonwoven fabrics. The nonwoven focus will be complemented by industry proven polyolefins for cast and blown film applications in hygiene webs and laminates, providing desirable back and top sheet properties such as water tightness, breathability and elasticity.

In addition, SABIC will also present ISCC Plus certified fiber and film polymers based on circular and renewable PP and PE polymer technology as part of the company’s TRUCIRCLE portfolio for advancing the transformation of the plastics industry from a linear to a truly circular economy. Examples of this comprehensive initiative include collaborations with various market leaders in the field. Together with Fibertex Personal Care, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of spunbond nonwovens for the hygiene industry, SABIC is creating a range of high-purity nonwovens for the hygiene market using ISCC PLUS certified circular PP polymer derived from post-consumer plastic waste. In another project, Fraunhofer Institute, SABIC and Procter & Gamble (P&G) joined forces to develop and demonstrate the feasibility of an advanced close-loop recycling process for used nonwoven facemasks.

Als interdisziplinäres Kompetenznetzwerk aus Industrie- und Forschungspartnern ist futureTEX 2014 gestartet, um den Wandel der traditionsreichen Textilbranche im Zeitalter der Digitalisierung zu einem zukunftsfähigen Industrieplayer – mit Technischen Textilien (TechTex) als Fundament – zu gestalten. In dieser Zeit ist das Konsortium auf mehr als 300 involvierte mittelständische Unternehmen, wissenschaftliche Einrichtungen und textile Branchenverbände angewachsen, die sich in insgesamt 34 Vorhaben der textilen Zukunft verschrieben haben. Das erklärte Ziel der Akteure bestand darin, die Position Deutschlands als Weltmarktführer im Textilmaschinenbau zu stärken sowie den Weg zu einer globalen Spitzenposition bei den Technischen Textilien bis 2025 zu ebnen.

Nun befindet sich das Projekt auf der Zielgeraden: Über 20 der insgesamt 34 Vorhaben wurden bereits erfolgreich abgeschlossen – Die noch in Arbeit befindlichen werden in den kommenden Monaten folgen.

(STFI) – zur hybriden Abschlussveranstaltung geladen. Rund 50 Teilnehmer folgten online und vor Ort dem abwechslungsreichen Rahmenprogramm.*

Feuerwear: Rolltop-Tasche Ed aus gebrauchtem Feuerwehrschlauch

Ed, die Rolltop-Tasche von Feuerwear, bietet mit vier Fächern Stauraum für Laptop, Klamotten, Snacks und alles, was noch über den Tag gebraucht wird oder dazu kommt. Das Design überzeugt sowohl auf der Vorder- als auch auf der Rückseite mit viel gebrauchtem Feuerwehrschlauch.

Die Expertenvorträge thematisierten unter anderem den Einsatz von Textilien in Medizin und Gesundheitswesen sowie die textile Kreislaufwirtschaft und die Nachhaltigkeit von Schutztextilien.

So präsentierte zum Beispiel die TEG Textile Expert Germany GmbH FFP2-Masken Made im Vogtland. Die JUNGMICHEL TEXTIL GmbH aus Plauen, eines der jüngsten vti-Mitglieder, stellte Mehrweg-Textilien für Medizin & Gesundheitswesen vor.
Als traditionsreiches Modeunternehmen erweiterte die Friedrich Seidel GmbH, während der Pandemie ihr Bekleidungsportfolio und zeigte im Rahmen der Ausstellung Mehrweg- Schutzkittel, die dank einer speziellen PUR-Beschichtung sprüh-, wisch- und dampfsterilisierbar sind. Die Vowalon Beschichtung GmbH aus Treuen erläutern dem Fachpublikum die Ergebnisse aus der hauseigenen Labor- und Anwendungstechnik. So leisten die PUR-Beschichtungen bei Kleidung und Polstern einen Beitrag zum Schutz von Kindern und Erwachsenen, Patienten und medizinischem Personal in Krankenhäusern oder Pflegeeinrichtungen vor Infektionen. Durch das Forum konnte der Dialog mit Unternehmen und Verbänden aus der tschechischen Republik intensiviert werden. So waren u. a. die ATOK Association of Textile-Clothing-Leather Industry (deutsch: Verband der Textil-Bekleidung-Leder-Industrie) und der Czech Nanotechnology Industries Association (deutsch: Verband der Nanotechnologie-Industrie der Tschechischen Republik) vor Ort.

„Wir blicken auf eine erfolgreiche Veranstaltung zurück. Die Gespräche haben gezeigt, dass das Thema Sicherheits-, Schutz- und Medizintextilien auch 2021 von höchster Relevanz ist. Umso mehr gilt es auf die Kompetenzen unserer Produzenten zurückzugreifen und auch unsere tschechischen Nachbarn mit ins Boot zu holen,“ resümiert Jenz Otto, vti- Hauptgeschäftsführer.

Daniel Dächert übernimmt die Position Director Marketing Germany Consumer Vileda GmbH. In seiner Rolle verantwortet er das Marketing für Vileda in Deutschland. Er folgt auf Katrin Paare, die ab Oktober zur Freudenberg Household Products (FHP) Export GmbH wechselt. Als Marketing Director Global Market Development ist sie zukünftig für das Marketing und die Geschäftsentwicklung von Vileda in Exportmärkten weltweit zuständig.

Dächert blickt auf 17 Jahre Erfahrung in nationalen und internationalen Marketing- und Key Account-Positionen in Konsumgüterunternehmen zurück. Unter anderem war er bei McCain, Reckitt Benckiser und der Intersnack Group tätig. Dächert ist bereits seit 2014 bei der Vileda GmbH tätig. Zuletzt verantwortete er als International Group Account Manager namhafte internationale Kunden.

vti: Wahl des Vorstands und Diskussionen in der 30. Mitgliederversammlung

Zur 30. Mitgliederversammlung des Verbands der Nord-Ostdeutschen Textil- und Bekleidungsindustrie e.V. (vti) wurden von den 67 anwesenden Mitgliedern der bisherige Vorstand mit allen Mitgliedern wiedergewählt. So wurden Thomas Lindner, Geschäftsführer der Strumpfwerk Lindner GmbH, als Vorstandsvorsitzender und André Lang, Geschäftsführer der Norafin Industries (Germany) GmbH, als Vorsitzender des Tarif- und Sozialausschusses für drei weitere Jahre in ihren Ehrenämtern bestätigt. Als neues Mitglied im Vorstand wurde Prof. Dr.-Ing. Markus Michael, Geschäftsführer texulting GmbH, aufgenommen.

Weit mehr als die Hälfte des Umsatzes der ostdeutschen Textil- und Bekleidungsbranche entfällt auf die Technischen Textilien, gefolgt von den Heimtextilien mit rund 30 Prozent und dem Bekleidungssektor mit zirka 10 Prozent.

Ingeborg Neumann, die Präsidentin des Gesamtverbands t+m und Geschäftsführende Gesellschafterin der Peppermint Holding GmbH, gab in ihrem Vortrag „Wir können Wandel – Transformation der deutschen Textil- und Modeindustrie“ einen Einblick in die zukünftigen Herausforderungen. Dabei betonte sie insbesondere die Nachhaltigkeit in allen Bereichen der Branche als Top-Thema. Laut einer t+m-Umfrage beträgt bei einem guten Fünftel der befragten Unternehmen der Umsatzanteil mit nachhaltigen Produkten bereits über 50 Prozent und über 90 Prozent aller befragten Unternehmen planen demnach, ihre nachhaltigen Produktanteile noch auszuweiten.
Insbesondere der Umstieg von fossilen Brennstoffen zu klimaneutralen, erneuerbaren Energien ist diesbezüglich ein wesentlicher Meilenstein.

Johannes Diebel, Leiter Forschung beim Forschungskuratorium Textil e.V., thematisierte in seinem Beitrag die branchenspezifischen Perspektiven bis 2035 zum Green Deal. Mit dem europäischen Grünen Deal will die EU u. a. den Übergang zu einer modernen, ressourceneffizienten und wettbewerbsfähigen Wirtschaft schaffen. Die dazu durchgeführte Branchenstudie führte zu einer Roadmap 2025–30 mit vielfältigen Handlungsfeldern, die von neuen Geschäftsmodellen und der Entwicklung neuer Märkte über attraktive Arbeitsmodelle für Nachwuchskräfte bis zu Innovations- und Netzwerkplattformen für neue Anwendungen in anderen Branchen reichten.

Thomas Lindner reflektierte u. a. diese Herausforderungen in seinem Vorstandsbericht bezüglich der Situation der mittelständischen Unternehmen im Verbandsgebiet. Diese haben durch die Corona-Pandemie starke Umsatzeinbußen hinnehmen müssen. Er machte deutlich, dass die Unternehmen pro Klimaschutz sind, dieser aber nur mit Augenmaß im und mit dem Mittelstand umgesetzt werden kann.

Hexcel has collaborated with HP Composites S.p.A (HP Composites), a world leader in the production of carbon fiber components for automotive and motorsports, to develop carbon fiber Class A body panels. Hexcel HexPly® XF surfacing technology is being extensively used by the Italian component producer to manufacture external body panels and other components for supercars such as Alfa Romeo’s stunning new supersport sedans, the Giulia GTA, and GTAm.

With five production plants in Italy, HP Composites has built an impressive track record of high-performance composite successes on both road and racetrack. HP has combined this processing expertise with Hexcel HexPly® XF3 surfacing material, HexPly® M47, and HexPly® M49 prepregs, working to the highest standards set by the most prestigious supercar OEMs and leading motorsport teams.

Hexcel has collaborated with HP Composites S.p.A (HP Composites), a world leader in the production of carbon fiber components for automotive and motorsports, to develop carbon fiber Class A body panels. Hexcel’s automotive composites portfolio is the result of decades of industry experience and the creation of strategic partnerships to develop and optimize leading-edge technologies. HexPly XF3 is an epoxy prepreg surface material, developed with processing input from the HP Composites team to address the challenges of producing high-quality Class A automotive body panel surfaces with excellent resistance to aging tests.

Applied as the first ply in the mold and after curing at 120-180˚C in an autoclave, HexPly XF3 produces a smooth part surface with no porosity, that requires minimal preparation for painting.

HexPly XF3 is supplied in an easy-to-handle roll format with good tack and drapability. After curing, it can be easily prepared for painting with a rapid sanding process. HP Composites has incorporated automated robotic sanding techniques for this finishing stage with the paint-ready HexPly XF3 surface providing excellent paint adhesion according to EN ISO 2409.

HP Composites typically uses autoclave processing for HexPly XF3 parts, maximizing weight savings and structural performance of the final components. In addition, HP has also developed its own proprietary press and compression molding processes, including Air Press Moulding® technology, compatible with HexPly XF3 and other HexPly prepregs for higher volume production series that require increased production rates.

“Our long-term experience has given us a detailed understanding of the critical features that influence how prepregs and surfacing technologies interact with different production processes,” said Abramo Levato, General Manager, HP Composites S.p.A. “The relationship we have with Hexcel is both highly technical and highly supportive. As a result we have a complete material package for high-quality Class A body panels that are formulated specifically with our requirements in mind.”

CHIC Shanghai starts on October 9, 2021 with around 500 brands

From the 09-11th of October, CHIC will take place with around 500 fashion and lifestyle brands on 53,000 sqm in the National Exhibition & Convention Center in Shanghai and offers a perfect overview of the fashion innovations in all fashion areas of the next season.

Fibre Extrusion Technology of Leeds, UK has delivered nine meltspinning systems to clients in the biomedical sector since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, with a similar number currently on order for 2021/22. This way FET could confirm the position as an acknowledged world leader in meltspinning equipment for the production of precursor materials used in medical devices and as a default supplier for absorbable suture production systems, with orders virtually doubling year on year.

Recent installations include a multi-functional system that can produce both multifilament and monofilament pre-cursor fibres, but nonwoven systems have been particularly prominent, driven by the burgeoning demand for FFP3 masks, gowns and other medical products required during the pandemic. These have been sold to medical device manufacturing companies across the globe, including the Far East, USA and Europe. Research organisations have also invested in FET systems for biomedical applications, the most recent being the University of Leeds in a laboratory scale Spunbond system.

Claudia Güntert studied Jurisprudence at the University of Basel, Switzerland, as well as German and Eastern European Literature at the Universities of Basel and Zurich, Switzerland.

From 2008 to 2013, she was Marketing & Product Communications Manager at Von Roll Management AG in Wädenswil, Switzerland. She thereby gained broad experience in marketing and customer communications in the industry and a deep understanding of the industrial relations between suppliers and their customers. From 2013 until 2021, she was Head of Corporate Communications & Investor Relations at Von Roll Holding AG in Wädenswil and Breitenbach, Switzerland. In this leading position, she expanded her expertise in internal and external communication with a focus on company vision and strategy, branding, global change management, and social media presence. The subsidiary focuses on specific customer segments within the leather market, such as high-fashion brands, and is known by customers for its support-driven and solutions-oriented approach. PielColor also offers several innovative product lines, including a range of low-impact water-based topcoats, which it is able to tailor to its customers’ requirements.

“Sustainability is an increasingly important factor for many of our customers - particularly those involved in motorsports and high-performance automotive applications. As you’d expect in these sectors though, sustainability can’t come at the expense of performance the two must go hand-in-hand. This is something that other prepreggers can struggle with, as natural fibres behave very differently to carbon or glass, for example.”

Customers would be able to understand the strengths and weaknesses of natural fibre composites, and to show where and how they can be adopted without the need for significant changes to existing composite component production processes.

One such customer is Retrac Group, whose composites division is one of the UK’s most experienced composites engineering companies across motorsports, automotive and aerospace. FET installs new Spunbond system at University of Leeds

Fibre Extrusion Technology Ltd, UK has completed the installation and commissioning of a new FET Laboratory Spunbond system for the University of Leeds.

Fibre Extrusion Technology Ltd, UK has completed the installation and commissioning of a new FET Laboratory Spunbond system for the University of Leeds.

This FET spunbond system is now an integral part of the research facilities of the CCTMIH (Clothworkers’ Centre for Textile Materials Innovation for Healthcare), led by Prof. Stephen Russell based in the School of Design, University of Leeds, who commented “The new spunbond system is perfectly suited to our academic research work, and is already proving itself to be extremely versatile and intuitive to use”.
 
This spunbond system complements existing research lab facilities at the university, which covers all areas of fibre and fabric processing, physical testing and characterisation. It forms part of a wider investment in facilities to support fundamental, academic research on ‘future manufacturing’ for medical devices, where the focus is on studying small-scale processing of unconventional polymers and additive mixes to form spunbond fabrics with multifunctional properties.
 
Key to this research is developing the underlying process-structure-performance relationships, based on the measured data, to provide detailed understanding of how final fabric performance can be controlled during processing.

As a rule, many exciting materials developed in academic research struggle to progress beyond the bench, because of compatibility issues with key manufacturing processes such as spunbond. By leveraging mono, core-sheath and island-in-the-sea bicomponent technology, the Leeds University team is working with polymer and biomaterial research scientists, engineers and clinicians to explore the incorporation of unusual materials in spunbond fabrics, potentially widening applications.
 
FET has built on its melt spinning expertise to develop a true laboratory scale spunbond system and is currently working on a number of other such projects globally with research institutions and manufacturers.
