AkzoNobel: Hydrogen-powered spray booth at new automotive training center

One of the automotive industry’s first hydrogen-powered spray booths has been installed by AkzoNobel at a new training center in Belgium.

Located near Brussels, the facility is part of a multi-million euro program to expand and upgrade the company’s network of more than 40 Automotive Training Centers (ATCs), which are located across the globe.  

Designed to go beyond local and legislative requirements, the new spray booth highlights how embracing the latest technologies can contribute to more sustainable operations. The site itself – which is 30% larger than the one it’s replacing – has been constructed to be BREEAM certified, further demonstrating AkzoNobel’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions across the full value chain by 2030.

“The industry of the future requires painters of the future who are fully conversant with the latest technologies and techniques,” says Patrick Bourguignon, Director of the company’s Automotive and Specialty Coatings business. “By increasing the size of our Belgian facility by almost a third, we can accommodate more technology – such as the new spray booth – and train more people.

The hydrogen-powered combi spray booth is fully equipped for traditional repairs and includes an all-in-one repairs workstation. It also has a special air filtration system which uses “active carbon” to filter any volatile organic compounds (VOCs) generated during the painting process. An extra high efficiency particulate air filter (HEPA) produces clean air (up to 99%), which is filtered back out into the atmosphere.

“By further upskilling painters, bodyshop managers and OEM engineers on a new generation of coatings and technologies, we can help them improve operational efficiency and reduce their own carbon emissions,” adds Bourguignon. “The investments we’re making in our ATCs will therefore address a growing global skills shortage, while also helping us set a new benchmark for sustainable practices in our industry.”

The company’s ATCs are part of a broader global network of training facilities that AkzoNobel operates across its businesses. They support customers and partners across key industries including aerospace coatings, decorative paints and yacht coatings.

autoneum: Change to the Group Executive Board

Denis Albert is to become the new Head of Business Group North America and member of the Group Executive Board of Autoneum Holding Ltd as of January 1, 2025. The French-American dual citizen has many years of experience as a general manager in the international automotive supply industry in North America. He will succeed Greg Sibley, who will retire at the end of January 2025.

The Board of Directors of Autoneum Holding Ltd has appointed Denis Albert as the new Head of Business Group North America and member of the Group Executive Board as of January 1, 2025. Denis Albert has been Head of Sales Development & Strategic Project Manager for Post Merger Integration (PMI) at Autoneum since January 2024. In addition to his new position, he will continue to assume the role of Head of Sales Development.

Before joining Autoneum, Denis Albert worked for the French automotive supplier Forvia (Faurecia) for over 25 years, where he held various management positions, most recently as President of the Faurecia Interior Division North America. Over the course of his career, he has acquired profound knowledge of the North American automotive market and extensive experience in sales, business management, implementation of regional strategies, purchasing and technology. Denis Albert holds a Master’s degree in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering from the Institut Catholique d’Arts et Métiers in Nantes, France, and an Executive Master of Business Administration from the Mannheim Business School, Germany.

Following a one-month transition period, Denis Albert will take over as Head of Business Group North America from Greg Sibley, who will retire on January 31, 2025. Greg Sibley has steered Business Group North America through turbulent times since May 2019 and has made a decisive contribution to the turnaround in this region. The Board of Directors and the Group Executive Board would like to thank Greg for his significant and tireless commitment to Autoneum over the past five years and wish him all the best for his personal future.

SGL Carbon: New production hall at the Bonn site

  • Increasing demand for graphite-based automotive solutions
  • Strengthening SGL Carbon’s site in Bonn

Over the past three years, SGL Carbon has invested a total of around 25 million euros in the modernization and expansion of its production capacities for specialty graphite automotive components at the Bonn site. The expansion project was completed at the end of last year and was inaugurated today at the site in an official ceremony. Besides the installation of partly new production facilities and a modernized production set-up, construction of a new, 2,000 m2 large hall for the production of the parts was implemented in the course of the expansion.

The background of the expansion is the continuously increasing demand for advanced solutions and products made from graphite in the automotive sector. Due to its durability, high strength, low friction behavior, and high conductivity, the material is suitable for many different automotive applications. Examples include rotors and vanes in vacuum pumps for brake boosters, bearings for exhaust gas management, and sealing rings and bearings for seals in coolant pumps. These solutions include applications for vehicles with conventional combustion engines as well as for e-mobility, thereby making an important contribution to clean driving, higher energy efficiency, and lower emissions.

“Automotive components made from specialty graphite are increasingly becoming the standard in many different applications in the automotive industry. Due to their special properties, they are more and more frequently replacing the materials previously used in pumps and seals, such as plastic and metal. By investing in the modernization and expansion of production in Bonn, we are consolidating our leading position in this market and offering our customers real added value in the close partnership with each other. Through the expansion, we are also strengthening our site in Bonn,” explains Burkhard Straube, President of the business unit Graphite Materials & Systems.

Solution packages for sustainability
Brand owners and retailers around the world are taking action to evaluate the environmental impact of textile treatment, dyeing and finishing processes in response to consumer concerns.
Archroma recently introduced the ONE WAY Process Simulator, the last update of a calculation tool that supports its ONE WAY Sustainability Service introduced back in 2012. The new, online software can be used to mimic and compare products and processes, and thus calculate the ecological and economical profile of the final end-product.
