The biorefinery process in Lenzing optimally utilizes the renewable raw material wood, the starting material for pulp and fiber production, and converts it into valuable products such as biobased acetic acid. LENZING™Acetic Acid Biobased, which has a carbon footprint over 85 percent lower than fossil-based acetic acid, is used in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, cleaning, chemical, and textile industries and in textile sector processes such as washing, dyeing, and finishing.

Monforts at Techtextil North America: Talking technical textiles

The full potential of advanced coating and finishing technologies for the production of technical textiles will be outlined by Monforts specialists which takes place in Atlanta, Georgia, in May.

The company and its US representative PSP Marketing, of Charlotte, North Carolina, will be part of the VDMA German Pavilion at the show, at stand 3231 within the Georgia World Congress Center.

A wide range of technical fabrics is now being successfully created with MontexCoat coating units in comination with Montex stenters, including tents, tarpaulins and awnings, black-out roller blinds and sail cloth, automotive interior fabrics and medical disposables.

Full PVC coatings, pigment dyeing or minimal application surface and low penetration treatments can all be carried out with the extremely versatile system. Solvent coatings in explosion-proof conditions, knife coating, roller coating and screen printing are further options and the MontexCoat has been engineered to enable users to switch quickly from one fabric run to the next without compromising on the economical use of energy or raw materials.

“There has already been terrific interest in the MontexCoat and the range of different techniques it enables and we’re far from exhausting its potential uses,” says Achim Gesser, Monforts Area Sales Manager who will be at the show in Atlanta. “For companies who don’t need such flexibility, the economical coaTTex unit is exclusively dedicated to air knife and knife-over-roller coating.

“At our ATC in Mönchengladbach, Germany, however, a MontexCoat unit has been integrated into a full Montex technical textiles pilot line, on which our customers can run trials of new fabrics and finishing formulations in widths of up to 1.8 metres. This line has been engineered to provide the ultimate in precision coating and finishing in industrial-scale trials.”

To fully demonstrate what’s possible, the Montex line at the ATC is able to treat materials not only at temperatures of up to 320°C, but apply separate coatings on the two sides of certain materials at different temperatures, within a single pass through the machine. To achieve this, the first two chambers of the stenter are fitted with TwinTherm burners for individual top/bottom heating. A temperature differential of up to 60°C can be achieved between the upper and lower nozzles within the chamber, depending on the treatment parameters.

“There are many applications where employing two separate temperature treatments is beneficial, such as floorcoverings – where the textile face fabric is treated at one temperature and the rubber backing at another – as well as PVC flooring employing chemical foams, black-out roller blinds with heavy backings or PTFE-coated filter materials,” Gesser explains.

Another key feature of the technical textiles line at the ATC is the Montex stenter’s special stretching device which is capable of pulling ten tons in length and ten tons in width – a huge amount per square metre of fabric and necessary in the production of materials such as woven or 3D knits for high temperature filter media.

Monforts also offers the special T-max grease-free stenter chain for high temperature treatments up to 320°C, at machine speeds up to 100m/min and transverse tension up to 2,500 N/m with the benefits of no maintenance and no grease marks on fabric.

“Technical textiles are extremely diverse in their end-use applications but the needs of the manufacturers of very different materials are still uniform in many respects,” says Gesser. “European-built Montex stenters provide maximum finishing efficiency and many of our customers are operating them 24 hours a day over seamless shifts.”

Existing customers include manufacturers in the fields of home textiles, geotextiles and automotive fabrics, as well as functional materials and dedicated Montex lines have also been supplied to producers of airbags, flame retardant barrier fabrics and spacer fabrics.

“Techtextil North America is a very important show for us because technical textiles are a key pillar of our production programme,” Gesser concludes. “North America is one of our major markets and we are looking forward to reconnecting with existing and potentially new customers at this always-vibrant show.”

Gebr. Otto: Garne mit „EU-COTTON“-Auszeichnung neu im Programm

Seit diesem Frühjahr hat Gebr. Otto Baumwollgarne mit der Auszeichnung „EUCOTTON“ im Programm. Die Fasern für diese Garne stammen aus Griechenland und Spanien, Länder, mit einer langen Tradition in der Baumwollerzeugung und einem umfassenden Know-how.

Die EUCOTTON-Initiative gehört zur European Cotton Alliance (ECA), einer Gruppe von Baumwollverbänden und Zusammenschlüssen in Griechenland und Spanien, also den Ländern, die europäische Baumwolle produzieren. Der Hauptsitz befindet sich im griechischen Larissa und im spanischen Sevilla gibt es eine Zweigstelle. Die ECA existiert seit 2019.

Die europäische Rohbaumwolle stammt aus Spanien und Griechenland. Bisher wird ein Viertel dieser Fasern auch in Europa verarbeitet. Der Rest wird exportiert, um über teilweise große Umwege – bis nach Südostasien – als textile Endprodukte in die EU zurück zu gelangen. „Das ist schon aus ökologischen Gründen wenig sinnvoll“, befindet Otto-Geschäftsführer Merkel. Auch vor dem Hintergrund zunehmender Handelsbeschränkungen und Probleme in den weltweiten Lieferketten müsse ein europäisches Sourcing Priorität haben. „Es sollte unser Anliegen sein, europäische Baumwolle mehrheitlich in Europa zu verarbeiten, zumal sie eine außerordentlich hohe Qualität aufweist.“

Vorteile des europäischen Baumwollanbaus
Basis für die hohe Qualität der EUCOTTON-Garne sind fortschrittliche Produktionsmethoden, darunter die ausschließlich maschinelle Ernte. Die sorgfältigen Ernteverfahren sorgen dafür, dass die Fasern nahezu frei von Verschmutzungen sind, beispielsweise durch Fremdfasern. Auch beim Reinigen und Entkörnen wird mit modernster Technik gearbeitet.
Baumwollfasern aus spanischer und griechischer Ernte sind außergewöhnlich gleichmäßig in Bezug auf Faserlänge, -stärke und -dicke. „Das alles zahlt auf die Spinnfähigkeit der Fasern ein“, weiß Andreas Merkel. „Sie können außerdem enorm vielfältig weiterverarbeitet werden.“

Ökologische und gesellschaftliche Verantwortung
Jenseits der technischen Vorteile des Rohstoffes liefert EUCOTTON wichtige Benefits in Punkto ökologische und gesellschaftliche Verantwortung: Das gentechnikfreie Saatgut schont das Ökosystem und die natürlichen Ressourcen. Dasselbe Ziel verfolgt das Wasser-Management: Baumwollanbau ist wasserintensiv und Maßnahmen wie Tröpfchenbewässerung und Präzisionslandwirtschaft können den Impact reduzieren. Das Prinzip „Minimieren“ gilt auch beim Einsatz von Pestiziden und Insektiziden.

„Wenn wir unsere Baumwolle aus Europa beziehen, dürfen wir sicher sein, dass der gesetzliche Rahmen, beispielsweise hinsichtlich Arbeitszeiten und Arbeitssicherheit, eingehalten wird“, ergänzt Andreas Merkel.

Kurze Wege schaffen Verlässlichkeit
Neben Transparenz und hoher Qualität sind die verlässliche und schnelle Verfügbarkeit ein weiteres Argument für EUCOTTON. „Natürlich wächst hochwertige Baumwolle auch andernorts auf der Welt, beispielsweise in Peru oder den USA. Allerdings tritt sie dann erst mal eine sechs- bis achtwöchige Schiffsreise an, bevor sie in Deutschland ankommt.“ Von Spanien reist die Rohbaumwolle zuverlässig in fünf Tagen mit dem LKW bis vor die Haustür des Weiterverarbeiters.

Ontex completes divestment of its Brazilian business to Softys

Ontex Group NV, a leading international developer and producer of personal care products, announces that it has completed the divestment of its Brazilian business activities to Softys S.A., a personal hygiene company with operations across Latin America and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Empresas CMPC S.A., headquartered in Chile.

The transaction includes Ontex’s business in Brazil and its manufacturing facility in Senador Canedo in the State of Goiás. The business develops, manufactures, commercializes and distributes diapers and pants for the baby care market under the PomPom, Cremer, Sapeka and Turma da Mônica brands, as well as for the adult care market under the Bigfral brand. It employs approximately 1,400 employees.

Aggregate net cash proceeds received at closing, net of cash/debt disposed, are €81 million, after the impact of tax-related and transaction costs, hedging expenses, as well as provisional balance sheet adjustments. On top of this amount, €18 million* will be put in escrow at closing.  The divestment proceeds will be used to reduce Ontex’s outstanding gross financial debt further.

E-Fiber flame shields: Mica-free flame protection for electric vehicles

The number of lithium-ion battery electric vehicles (BEV) in use worldwide is growing rapidly. As a result, ensuring the safety of the battery pack and thus minimizing the risk of fire accidents has become a key issue for car manufacturers across the globe. In order to protect vehicle occupants in the event of a so-called thermal runaway, in which the battery heats up quickly and uncontrollably and, in the worst case, ignites or explodes, fire protection materials and components such as flame shields are among the most effective methods.

Autoneum’s new E-Fiber flame shields offer flame protection and electrical insulation inside the battery housing. They can withstand extreme temperatures, pressure and abrasions, thus significantly increasing the safety of passengers in the event of the battery overheating and catching fire. As the shields are made from a composite material, they are also considerably lighter, mechanically stronger and more cost-efficient than the mineral mica alternatives on the market.

In contrast to alternative standard products, which often consist of heavy and brittle mineral materials such as mica, the innovative shields based on E-Fiber are lightweight, stiff and stable and offer optimum flame protection and fire blast resistance. Due to the moldability of the material, the shields also ensure excellent battery coverage and design flexibility. Thanks to the possibility of manufacturing components with complex 3D shapes, there is also the potential to integrate an additional function to guide hot gases away from the battery. The shields are based on a composite material made of reinforcing fibers and resin, which are formed into thin layers of one to two millimeters.

The heat resistance of up to 1400°C and the mechanical strength of the material significantly increase the shields’ resistance to high temperatures, but also hot particle abrasion and gas pressure. Moreover, the fibers provide the part’s non-conductive and insulating properties, which are necessary for the battery system’s electrical insulation and thermal safety.

The E-Fiber flame shields can be installed between the battery cells and the battery cover or the vehicle floor and contribute significantly to increasing the safety of vehicle occupants in the event of a battery thermal runaway. They thus offer a lightweight, safe and geometrically adaptable alternative to standard flame shields on the market. In addition, the composite shields are completely riskfree from a compliance perspective. This is in contrast to mica-based products, which can prove problematic in terms of responsible sourcing.

Autoneum’s E-Fiber flame shields have already been validated in battery tests and are currently in pre-development with various customers in Europe.

CARBIOS: New Chairwoman and new CEO

CARBIOS, a pioneer in the development and industrialization of biological technologies to reinvent the life cycle of plastic and textiles, announces the resignation of Philippe Pouletty from term of office as Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director, as well as from his term of office as Chief Executive Officer, a position he had accepted on a transitional basis on 18 December 2024.
 
The Board of Directors has taken note of this decision and thanks Philippe Pouletty for his contribution to CARBIOS' development.

The Board of Directors has appointed Isabelle Parize as Chairwoman of the Board and Vincent Kamel as Chief Executive Officer with immediate effect.
 
Continuing the work already undertaken, Vincent Kamel will focus on successfully executing CARBIOS' strategic objectives, including securing the additional financing needed to build its PET biorecycling plant in Longlaville.

She then pursued her career in the beauty sector, becoming President of the Managing Board of Nocibé, one of France's leading perfume retailers, in 2011. In 2015, she was appointed Managing Director of Douglas AG, a European perfume giant, where she steered the company's expansion and modernization.
 
In 2018, she took a new role as CEO of DELSEY. Between 2021 and 2025, she will continue to support the Group as President of its Supervisory Board. Isabelle Parize has served on Coty Inc.'s Board since 2020.
 
Isabelle Parize has been a member of the CARBIOS Board of Directors since 2022.
 
Vincent Kamel, with over 38 years' experience in the polymer and chemical industries, has held management positions in companies such as Rhône-Poulenc, Rhodia and Solvay, both in France and abroad (China, South Korea, Brazil), notably as General Manager of Solvay's polyamide division, Director of the Coatis business unit and Director for Asia in the engineering plastics sector.

Sustainable insulation: ANDRITZ enhances recycling capabilities at Buitex

International technology group ANDRITZ has supplied and commissioned a reXline tearing system for Buitex, Semin Group, located in Cours, France. The new production line enables the company to expand textile waste recycling for sustainable insulation production.

Founded in 1895, Buitex is a French manufacturer of high-performance recycled products. As a pioneer in circular economy practices, Buitex transforms textile waste into high-performance insulation and comfort products. Since joining the Semin Group in 2023, the company has operated a 20,000 m² production site equipped with six production lines and has become one of Europe’s major players in the circular economy.

This second ANDRITZ tearing line at Buitex increases the company’s recycling capacity while maintaining high fiber purity, thanks to an advanced hard-point removal system. The latest-generation cyclone technology further improves disruptor sorting, enhancing overall efficiency. The system can process up to an additional 2.5 tons of fiber per hour, enabling the production of recycled fibers for applications such as bedding, construction, and automotive insulation.

In view of this trend, the specifications for PET recycling machines to handle higher capacities are also growing. With VACUREMA® technology, EREMA offers a system that enables throughputs of up to six tonnes per hour.

This technology achieves impressively efficient decontamination and gentle IV treatment and fulfils the strict requirements of the European and North American food safety authorities. Even the basic version produces food-grade rPET, providing the basis for a wide range of end applications. Whether the pellets are then used with SSP for IV adjustment for bottle-to-bottle or high IV applications, an additional upstream vacuum treatment enables direct connection to preform production, or the material is processed inline into sheets or fibres, the VACUREMA® is a versatile all-rounder with food-grade certification.

Advanced VACUNITE® technology for the highest rPET quality
Applications with especially high material quality requirements are covered by advanced VACUNITE® technology. It combines the proven VACUREMA® system with integrated vacuum-assisted SSP in a nitrogen atmosphere. This combination further optimises the material properties and significantly reduces the yellowing of the pellets, which is an important quality factor in bottle-to-bottle recycling. What is more, the closed nitrogen cycle and optimised process control ensure even lower nitrogen consumption, and ultimately, a particularly efficient and environmentally friendly process. VACUNITE® technology is available on machines for throughputs of up to 2500 kilograms per hour that feature particularly low energy consumption and a compact design.

The StitchTogether National Seminar in Italy presents the Rome Declaration

On 19-20 February 2025, social partners from the Italian textile and fashion industry met in Rome to deepen their understanding of the upcoming EU legislations and their impact on the Italian textile industry, as well as to further discuss the next step in their effort for a more broad and effective social dialogue. In the context of the EU co-funded StitchTogether project, which aims at promoting social partnerships in the European Textiles and Clothing Industry, the meeting was also the occasion to draft the Rome Declaration: a joint statement to emphasise the social partners’ strong commitment to work together.

The meeting in Rome brought together representatives of the Italian textile industry, including the Italian employer association (Confindustria Moda), national trade unions (Femca-Cisl, Filctem-Cgil and Uiltec-Uil), regional clusters and companies to discuss the future of the industry. Together, they discussed the proposal for a sectoral industrial policy strategy to present to the Italian Government and the EU Commission for the support, consolidation and development of the textile-clothing supply chain.

In a context of numerous challenges for the European textile industry, such as unfair globalization, green and digital transition, social dialogue is a real lever for improving working conditions and job security. We are committed alongside our Italian partners to a resilient and attractive textile industry in Italy”.

SGL Carbon: Restructuring the loss-making Carbon Fibers business unit

The Board of Management of SGL Carbon SE decided, with the approval of the Supervisory Board, to restructure the loss-making Carbon Fibers business unit. SGL Carbon will significantly reduce the business activities of Carbon Fibers and focus on a profitable core. Individual solutions are being developed for all Carbon Fibers sites, including the closure of unprofitable sites. On February 23, 2024, SGL Carbon had already announced that it was reviewing all strategic options for the Carbon Fibers business unit. The joint venture Brembo SGL Carbon Ceramic Brakes S.p.A. (BSCCB), which is allocated to the Carbon Fibers business unit for accounting purposes, is not affected by the restructuring.

(BSCCB), which is allocated to the Carbon Fibers business unit for accounting purposes, is not affected by the restructuring.

A complete sale of the Business Unit Carbon Fibers was intensively evaluated, but is no longer considered feasible. Dr. Stephan Bühler, the responsible member of the Board of Management of SGL Carbon, explains: “We are in the initial phase of restructuring the Business Unit Carbon Fibers. We therefore ask for your understanding that we are currently unable to provide any specific details regarding individual site closures and the exact restructuring period. Our goal is to quickly begin the implementation in order to create clarity for our employees. We will begin the implementation of the restructuring as quickly as possible in order to contain the operating losses of CF and the associated impact on the entire SGL Carbon in the short term.”

The company is expecting one-time cash effects in the amount of approximately €50 million over the next two years due to the extensive restructuring.

Carbon Fibers produces textile, acrylic and carbon fibers at seven sites in Europe and North America, with around 870 employees. After a slump in demand for carbon fibers for the wind industry, the business unit's sales and earnings fell significantly in the course of fiscal years 2023 and 2024.

“The earlier expectations for carbon fibers as a future material for the automotive industry have not been fulfilled. The wind energy industry was also unable to compensate the shortfall in demand. In combination with increasing global over-capacities, high operating losses were incurred over the last two years, which weighed on the entire SGL Carbon,” said Andreas Klein, CEO of SGL Carbon, explaining the decision to restructure the Carbon Fiber business.

Preliminary sales and adjusted EBITDA 2024
Based on preliminary figures, Carbon Fibers generated sales of around €210 million in fiscal year 2024 (previous year: €224.9 million). According to preliminary figures, the negatively adjusted EBITDA of Carbon Fibers, excluding the share of the earnings of the joint venture BSCCB, amounted to around minus €27 million in fiscal year 2024 (previous year: minus €10.9 million), as expected.

The continued weak business development of Carbon Fibers also impacts the group. Based on preliminary figures, group sales of SGL Carbon amounted to approximately €1,026 million (previous year: €1,089.1 million) in fiscal year 2024. Preliminary adjusted EBITDA for the group of approximately €163 million was slightly below the prior-year level (2023: €168.4 million), but in line with the given guidance for 2024. Based on the current economic conditions and forecasts for some of our markets, such as the automotive and semiconductor industries, SGL Carbon expects the market environment to remain challenging in 2025.

Reju partners with Cibutex for a Circular Textile Ecosystem

Reju™, a textile-to-textile regeneration company, and Cibutex, a cooperative of companies dedicated to establishing a more sustainable textile supply chain, announced a partnership. Through this collaboration, Reju and Cibutex will work to establish an ecosystem among Cibutex member companies.

This partnership will deliver feedstock supply of secondary raw materials derived from post-consumer textile waste to Reju for the recycling and the production of regenerated Reju Polyester™. This provides circular regeneration opportunities using Reju’s innovative textile-to-textile recycling technology.

Reju is pioneering a global infrastructure for large-scale textile waste regeneration, starting with polyester. Reju Polyester™, will have a 50% lower carbon footprint compared to virgin polyester and can be regenerated infinitely. This partnership with Cibutex will see materials from the cooperative’s member companies processed at Reju’s Regeneration Hub Zero in Frankfurt, Germany, which will be fully operational in 2025 and at future Reju Regeneration Hubs.
