Düsseldorf Fashion Days: Wirtschaftsförderung stärkt Mode- und Einzelhandelsstandort

Die vor wenigen Wochen im Rahmen des DFD Festivals gestartete Händlerinitiative zur Förderung des Düsseldorfer Handels verzeichnet bisher Anmeldungen von rund 100 Marken, Händlern, Hotels und Galerien. Zahlreiche Aktivierungen wie Pop-Up-Stores, Schaufensteraktionen und dezentrale Fashionplattformen schaffen eine aufregende Orderwoche mit Festivalcharakter.

Am 21. Juli bis zum 28. Juli 2021 startet das Orderbusiness in Düsseldorf mit einer umfassenden Standort-Initiative unter der etablierten Dachmarke DFD – Düsseldorf Fashion Days. Wichtigster Tag für Shoppingbegeisterte und den Einzelhandel ist Samstag, der 24. Juli mit dem sogenannten „Shopping Day“ – lange einkaufen bis 22 Uhr. Aufgrund der hohen Nachfrage sind Anmeldungen für interessierte Händler, Gastronomen und Hoteliers noch bis zum 2. Juli 2021 möglich.

Das Mode- und Kunstfestival „strike a pose“ bündelt zeitgleich erstmalig mit einem umfassenden Programm zwei Schwerpunkte, die die Region auszeichnen, Mode und Kunst. Des Weiteren beleben Schaufenster des Kompetenzzentrums für Kultur- und Kreativwirtschaft (KomKuK) mit diversen inspirierenden Kooperationen das Stadtbild. Düsseldorfer Mode- und Kunstliebhaber*innen dürfen sich in der Lorettostraße, der Friedrichstraße und am Marktplatz auf einen Schaufensterbummel der besonderen Art freuen. Alle Akteure aus Mode, Lifestyle, Event, Kultur- und Kreativwirtschaft sind eingeladen, sich mit Aktionen am Festival zu beteiligen, die Anmeldung ist auch hier noch bis zum 2. Juli möglich.

A lack of permissions, adjustments to official measures at short notice, travel restrictions within Europe and overseas, potential quarantine obligations, short-term work in many companies – overall, a volatile situation makes it impossible to press ahead with the necessary planning in a responsible, risk-free way, especially for the exhibitors and partners.

Because of this, the organizers are now forced to cancel SEEK, PREMIUM and FASHIONTECH events in July 2021 and move them to January 2022 instead. Safeguarding the health and safety of exhibitors, guests, partners and employees always takes top priority.

July will see the start of Frankfurt Fashion Week (FFW) digital. Frankfurt Fashion Week Studio is the core element of the FFW opening season and encompasses the whole FFW ecosystem – with its key themes of Fashion Business, sustainability and digitisation – in the form of a digital portal.

FFW Studio is a progressively curated and staged platform that brings together all German fashion trade shows, conferences, fashion experiences and events under one roof for the first time. First as a digital venue, then as a hybrid one. For pioneers, brands, experiences, entertainment and networking.

Dafür haben die initiierenden, die Messe Frankfurt und die Premium Group, das FFW STUDIO entwickelt. Die Tradeshows Premium, Seek, Neonyt und The Ground sowie die Runwaypräsentationen werden aufgrund der andauernden pandemischen Situation auf 19. bis 21. Januar 2022 verschoben.

Ausschließlich digital – die andauernd volatile Covid-19 Situation in Deutschland und die bundesweite Beschlusslage seitens der Bundesregierung gebieten den Initiierenden der Frankfurt Fashion Week, sich für die erste Frankfurt Fashion Week vom 5. bis 9. Juli 2021 auf größtenteils digitale Formate zu konzentrieren. Als zentraler, digitaler Raum dafür wird das FFW STUDIO lanciert. Neben den pandemischen Rahmenbedingungen ist vor allem die partnerschaftliche Verantwortung gegenüber allen Stakeholder*innen ausschlaggebender Punkt für diese Entscheidung – schließlich würde ein unverändertes Festhalten an den bisherigen Planungen das finanzielle Risiko für eine physische Durchführung der Frankfurt Fashion Week auf die Schultern der Austeller*innen, Besucher*innen und Partner*innen verlagern. Die Prognosen hinsichtlich des Impffortschritts stimmen aktuell grundsätzlich positiv. Dennoch müssen Tradeshows und Präsentationen, die auf der physischen Präsenz eines internationalen Besucher*innen- und Aussteller*innenportfolios aufbauen, den zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt maßgeblichen Entscheidungsfaktoren Rechnung tragen. Zu diesen zählen insbesondere sowohl externe Kriterien, wie andauernde Einschränkungen im Reiseverkehr sowie umfangreiche Quarantänebestimmungen als auch unternehmensinterne Aspekte wie Reiserestriktionen oder auch Kurzarbeitsregelungen, die Stakeholder*innen eine Zusage der physischen Teilnahme an der Frankfurt Fashion Week Anfang Juli 2021 momentan unmöglich machen.

Digital Impulse für die Transformation der Fashionbranche setzen
„Jetzt heißt es, nach vorne blicken. Wir sind angetreten, um die Frankfurt Fashion Week mit ihrem Ecosystem zum Taktgeber der Mode- und Textilbranche zu machen und relevante Zukunftsthemen auf der Agenda der Industrie zu setzen. An diesem Anspruch halten wir fest. Beispielsweise der neue Frankfurt Fashion SDG Summit presented by der Conscious Fashion Campaign in Zusammenarbeit mit dem United Nations Office for Partnerships und die durch die "New European Bauhaus"-Initiative der Europäischen Union inspirierte Konferenz „The New European Bauhaus – Werkstatt der Zukunft“, organisiert vom Fashion Council Germany in Kooperation mit der Frankfurt Fashion Week, versprechen einen hochkarätigen digitalen Aufschlag. Uns bleibt nichts anderes übrig, als den Tatsachen ins Auge zu sehen, die Konsequenzen zu ziehen und die physischen Elemente einer Frankfurt Fashion Week – auf die wir uns alle so sehr freuen – für den Januar 2022 zu planen. Das FFW STUDIO entsteht auf der Website www.frankfurt.fashion und wird der zentrale Anlaufpunkt für alle Textil- und Modeprofis, Fashion People und Interessierte. In einem professionell kuratierten Live-Stream wird während der Frankfurt Fashion Week eine ganzheitliche User Experience entstehen, die mit den vier Kanälen Trade Show, Conference, Experience sowie Arts & Entertainment die vier Säulen des Frankfurt Fashion Week Ökosystems abbildet und dabei stets die Leitmotive Sustainability und Digitisation in Szene setzt. Die Inhalte werden im Anschluss an die Liveübertragung in Form einer Video-on-Demand-Serie allen Stakeholdern für die Interimssaison zur Verfügung stehen. So entsteht eine konzentrierte und hochqualitative Essenz der zukunftsorientierten Themenfelder der Frankfurt Fashion Week.
Das Programm ist State-of-the-Art und wird gemeinsam mit Partner*innen aus Politik, Handel, Industrie und Medien entwickelt: In exklusiven Future Talks internationaler Leitmedien werden zukunftsrelevante Fragestellungen mit führenden Entscheidungsträger*innen der Branche diskutiert. Weitere Programmhighlights sind Deep Dives und Einblicke in die beiden Leit-Konferenzen der neuen Frankfurt Fashion Week, der Frankfurt Fashion SDG Summit sowie die Konferenz „The New European Bauhaus – Werkstatt der Zukunft“, die beide erstmals im Rahmen der Frankfurt Fashion Week ausgerichtet werden. BDSE Handelsverband Schuhe: Lockdown bringt den Schuhhandel an den Rand der Existenz

Abgesehen von kurzen und regional unterschiedlichen Öffnungsphasen, meist nur mit vorheriger Terminvereinbarung, durfte der stationäre Fachhandel seine Ladentüren in diesem Jahr noch nicht öffnen. Jeden Monat, in dem der stationäre Schuhhandel geschlossen bleiben muss, gehen rund 700 Millionen Euro Umsatz verloren.  Nach den Verkaufssaisons Frühjahr/Sommer 2020 und Herbst/ Winter 2020/21 ist dies nun die dritte Saison in Folge, in der die Unternehmen auf einem großen Teil ihrer eingekauften Ware sitzen bleiben und hohe Verluste einfahren werden. Allein in den ersten drei Monaten dieses Jahres hat der stationäre Schuhfachhandel pandemiebedingt und im Vergleich zur Vorcorona-Zeit schätzungsweise 1,5 Milliarden Umsatz eingebüßt.

Da die staatlichen Hilfen bei weitem nicht reichen, zahlreiche Schuhhäuser sogar gänzlich leer ausgehen, werden viele Schuhhäuser den langanhaltenden Lockdown kaum überleben können. Nach einer aktuellen Handelsbefragung des HDE gehen 58 Prozent der Schuhfach-händler davon aus, dass sie ohne weitere staatliche Hilfen ihr Geschäft noch in diesem Jahr aufgeben müssen! Bei gut 3.000 Unternehmen mit rund 10.000 Stores sind empfindliche Lücken in unseren Innenstädten zu befürchten, zumal die wirtschaftliche Situation im Beklei-dungshandel ähnlich dramatisch ist.

Deutliche Verschiebung der Absatzkanäle
Die Pandemie führte im Schuhmarkt zu einer deutlichen Verschiebung der Marktanteile der Absatzkanäle. Eindeutiger Krisengewinner ist der Onlinehandel, der im vergangenen Jahr seinen Marktanteil nach BDSE-Berechnungen von 26 Prozent auf 34 Prozent ausbauen konnte. Gewachsen sind nicht nur die Online Pure Player wie bspw. Zalando, sondern auch die Online-Umsätze der Multichannel-Schuhhändler mit stationären Wurzeln, die ihren digitalen Vertriebsweg in den vergangenen 12 Monaten mangels Alternativen zum Teil kräftig ausbauten. Wie überhaupt viele kleine und mittelgroße Schuhgeschäfte in der Zeit des Shutdowns neue digitale Kommunikationskanäle zu ihren Kunden sich erschlossen oder ihre digitalen Tools aus Servicegründen weiter optimiert haben. Deren Online-Verkäufe, oftmals über Online-Marktplätze und -Plattformen getätigt, vermochten aber bei weitem nicht die Umsatz- und Renditeverluste des stationären Geschäfts auszugleichen. Aber sie konnten darüber zumindest den Kundenkontakt halten und versuchen, überschaubare Teile ihrer Warenüberhänge trotz Öffnungsverbot abzusetzen.

Rückläufiges Marktvolumen
Die Kanalverschiebungen finden in einem insgesamt rückläufigen Markt statt. Denn die Verbraucher halten sich mit ihren Konsumausgaben Corona-bedingt auch bei Schuhen aktuell zurück. Nach vorläufigen BDSE-Berechnungen schrumpfte das Marktvolumen bei Schuhen in 2020 um 13,5 Prozent auf 10,2 Mrd. Euro. Zwar konnte der Online- und Katalogversandhandel bei Schuhen um 15 Prozent zulegen, doch gingen in dieser Zeit dem stationären Schuhhandel rund 23 Prozent seiner Umsätze verloren. Neben den Schuhfachgeschäften mussten auch andere Vertriebsformen des Einzelhandels, die dem Lockdown unterlagen, bei ihren Schuhumsätzen zweistellige Einbußen verkraften, so beispielsweise die Schuhsortimente der Kauf- und Warenhäuser und jene der Bekleidungsgeschäfte.

"Schuhhandel muss wieder öffnen dürfen"
Die Schuhbranche hofft auf eine Nachbesserung der Corona-Hilfen. Dies insbesondere auch im Zuge der anstehenden Änderung des Infektionsschutzgesetzes, das mit einer Verlängerung der Lockdownphase und verschärften regionalen Öffnungsszenarien verbunden sein wird. Wenn schon der Nonfood-Handel diesen Kraftakt zur Eindämmung der Pandemie leisten soll, dann müsse der Staat auch für einen fairen Schadensausgleich sorgen. Wobei aus Sicht des BDSE und durch wissenschaftliche Studien des RKI, der TU Berlin und der Berufsgenossenschaft belegt sei, dass die Ansteckungsgefahr im Einzelhandel – insbesondere bei Beachtung der gängigen Abstands- und Hygienevorschriften – ausgesprochen gering sei.

Vor diesem Hintergrund fordern die Handelsverbände, dass bei der Novellierung des Infektionsschutzgesetzes und den weiteren Corona-Maßnahmen das Problem bei der Wurzel gepackt wird. Gesetzgeber und Behörden sollten sich auf die wirklich wirksamen Lösungen zur Eindämmung der Pandemie konzentrieren und nicht auf Wirtschaftsbereiche, die nach wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen kaum Effekte auf das Infektionsgeschehen haben. Hinzu komme beim Verkauf von Schuhen der Gesundheitsaspekt einer fachkundigen Beratung. Denn nicht nur bei Babys und Kindern, deren Füße in bestimmten Altersklassen rasch und innerhalb nur eines Jahres über mehrere Schuhgrößen hinweg wachsen, ist mit Blick auf die Passform eine qualifizierte und zeitnahe Beratung beim Schuhkauf sehr wichtig. Sondern auch bei Erwachsenen sei gut passendes Schuhwerk gesundheitlich geboten, nicht zuletzt um Fußdeformationen, Nervenschmerzen und Fehlhaltungen mit entsprechenden orthopädischen Folgeschäden vorzubeugen. Auch aus diesem Grund, und sich auf ein Urteil des Bayerischen Verwaltungsgerichtshofes vom 31. März dieses Jahres stützend, hat der BDSE unlängst nicht nur die Öffnung der Kinderschuhgeschäfte, sondern die Öffnung aller Schuhfachgeschäfte gegenüber Bund und Ländern gefordert.

Unabhängig davon kämpft der BDSE seit Monaten gemeinsam mit den Landesverbänden und dem HDE für eine Verbesserung der staatlichen Überbrückungshilfen. Noch immer erhalten viele kleine inhabergeführte Geschäfte, aber auch die großen Schuhfilialisten, überhaupt keine Überbrückungshilfen, um die aktuelle Krise zu überstehen. Und für die allermeisten jener Schuhgeschäfte, für die Hilfsgelder in den Fördermaßnahmen vorgesehen sind, reichen diese nicht aus, um die schließungsbedingten Verluste auch nur annähernd zu decken und die Unternehmen finanziell ausreichend zu entlasten.

During the Smart Voice, the C.L.A.S.S. Manifesto for Responsible Fashion, the 2021 edition of the C.L.A.S.S. ICON competition and the Sustainability Formula were presented.

C.L.A.S.S. ICON Award is an international award for visionary creatives in the fashion world who are able to convey the values of sustainability not only to fashion professionals, but also to the wider public: consumers. "We created C.L.A.S.S. ICON to reward visionary designers who create their collections by combining design, innovation and responsibility and who are able to communicate the values behind their garments authentically and effectively to consumers. During the panel, designer Gilberto Calzolari, the first winner of the first C.L.A.S.S. ICON Award, shared his vision for responsible fashion and his current projects. "My brand is a laboratory of experimentation. I create fashion to open conversations and change the way people behave and think. My creativity, from the choice of fabrics and processes to the image I decide to communicate, are the weapons at my disposal. Since the beginning, I have been really excited to team up with C.L.A.S.S. in order to share a common and challenging journey, with the perspective to be part of a constantly growing network activating mutual support. Key role for Kipaş in the EU’s multi-million New Cotton Project

  • Monforts customer Kipaş has been selected as the sole denim manufacturing partner in the €6.7 million European Union-funded New Cotton Project, involving the brands adidas and H&M, working in a consortium with suppliers, innovators and research institutes.

Kipaş, based in Kahramanmaraş, Turkey, is currently installing its third Monforts Montex stenter along with a third Monfortex compressive shrinkage system in a combined configuration dedicated to denim production.

This follows the successful installation and commissioning of the second Montex and Monfortex lines at the Kahramanmaraş plant in 2018, which Kipaş Vice Chairman of the Board Ahmet Öksüz said had immediately exceeded expectations.

“We performed a very thorough technical investigation based on the latest Industry 4.0 analysis before the purchase, to determine what we needed, and the Monforts technology met all our requirements,” he said, in an interview with Textilegence magazine. “The Monfortex is equipped with a variety of features not found on classical shrinkage machines and the production can be monitored from beginning to end. It also exceeded our expectations in energy cost savings.”

Kipaş subsequently received a special certificate from Monforts in recognition of its exceptional utilisation of the technology to its full potential.

The latest Montex stenter now being installed at Kipaş is a 12-chamber unit with a working width of 2 metres featuring all of the latest automation features. The Monfortex unit, also with a working width of 2 metres, is in a ‘double rubber’ configuration, comprising two compressive shrinkage units and two felt calenders in line. This allows the heat setting of elastane fibres and the residual shrinkage of the denim to be carried out simultaneously, for a significant increase in production speeds.

“Around 90-95% of denim fabric production now contains elastane fibres and the Monforts system has allowed us to simultaneously increase our production and quality in this respect,” Mr Öksüz said.

Regenerated cotton
For the next three years within the New Cotton Project, Kipaş will manufacture denim fabrics based on the cellulose-based fibres of Infinited Fiber Company of Finland, made from post-consumer textile waste that has been collected, sorted and regenerated.

The patented technology of Infinited, which is leading the consortium of 12 companies, turns cellulose-rich textile waste into fibres that look and feel like cotton.

“We are very excited and proud to lead this project which is breaking new ground when it comes to making circularity in the textile industry a reality,” said Infinited co-founder and CEO Petri Alava. “The enthusiasm and commitment with which the entire consortium has come together to work towards a cleaner, more sustainable future for fashion is truly inspiring.”

Take-back programmes
Adidas and H&M will establish take-back programmes to collect the clothing that is produced, to determine the next phase in their lifecycle. Clothing that can no longer be worn will be returned to Infinited, for regeneration into new fibres, further contributing to a circular economy in which textiles never go to waste, but instead are reused, recycled or turned into new garments.

The aim is to prove that circular, sustainable fashion can be achieved today, and to act as an inspiration and stepping stone to further, even bigger circular initiatives by the industry going forward.

The EU has identified the high potential for circularity within the textile industry, while simultaneously highlighting the urgent need for the development of technologies to produce and design sustainable and circular bio-based materials. Making sustainable products commonplace, reducing waste and leading global efforts on circularity are outlined in the European Commission’s Circular Economy Action Plan.

Fashion brands produce nearly twice as many clothes today as they did 20 years ago and demand is expected to continue growing. At the same time, the equivalent of one garbage truck of textiles is landfilled or burned every second. Most of the textile industry’s environmental problems relate to the raw materials used by the industry – cotton, fossil-based fibres such as polyester, and viscose as the most common man-made cellulosic fibre, are all associated with serious environmental concerns.

According to the WTO, the aim of World Cotton Day is to highlight the global economic importance of cotton and to raise awareness of the raw material by recognising the work of everyone involved in its cultivation, processing and trade. At the same time, within the framework of international cooperation, it is hoped that supporters and investors can be found to aid with technological and economic progress within the cotton value chain.

This time, the entire world cotton community will be involved in World Cotton Day on Wednesday, 7 October 2020. A wide variety of campaigns and events are taking place everywhere to draw attention to the importance of cotton and its possible uses.

Cotton is one of the most relevant agricultural raw materials in the world. Around 26 million tonnes of it are harvested annually. Approximately 150 million people in almost 80 countries around the world live from the cultivation of the natural fibre. A large number of these live in developing countries, where cotton cultivation is of particular importance as a cash crop.

Cotton is known as an agricultural product that is turned into a textile. The raw material is indispensable in fashion and clothing – and has been for thousands of years. But the use of cotton now goes far beyond textiles. For example, cosmetic products such as hand creams and hair shampoo are made from the oil of cotton seeds. The raw material is also used in the manufacture of banknotes, furniture and technical textiles, as well as in medical technology.

Against the background of the current discussion on sustainability and sustainable consumption, the role of natural fibres is becoming even more important. Cotton is biodegradable and a renewable resource. It can be grown again and again in agriculture through cultivation in crop rotation. This secures incomes and enables efficient value creation within the global production and processing chain.

The Bremen Cotton Exchange will actively support World Cotton Day with cross-media coverage. In addition, in time for World Cotton Day, three thematically different, emotionally appealing short films about cotton will be launched. They are aimed at consumers as customers of the textile and clothing trade and provide information about the benefits and properties of cotton and answer questions about its sustainability. In keeping with the times, they will be published via virtual media.

Alle Textil- und Schuhgeschäfte sind geschlossen, der Umsatz ist auf Null gesunken. Das Coronavirus hat die Fashion-Branche genauso heftig getroffen wie Gastronomie und Kultureinrichtungen. Tausende Boutiquen, Schuhgeschäfte und Modehäuser und damit ihre Lieferanten stehen vor dem Aus.

Die Fashion-Branche leidet aufgrund ihrer saisonalen Produkte extrem stark unter den Auswirkungen der Coronakrise. Nahrungsmittel sind lebensnotwendig, andere Anschaffungen können aufgeschoben werden. „Hosen oder Schuhe aus der Frühjahrskollektion kann der Modehandel aber im Sommer kaum noch verkaufen“, schildert BTE-Präsident Steffen Jost. „Insofern kann man Mode gut als ‚verderbliche Ware‘ bezeichnen.“

Ein großes Problem der Fashionbranche ist zudem die lange, internationale Lieferkette. Selbst während der erzwungenen Ladenschließung wird neue Ware angeliefert, die bereits vor Monaten bei den Lieferanten bestellt wurde und trotz fehlender Einnahmen angenommen und bezahlt werden muss. Eine Aussetzung der Belieferung ist schwierig, da die Industrie bei ihren Vorlieferanten in der gleichen Situation ist.

Partnerschaftliche Lösungen werden zwar diskutiert, sie verschieben das Problem aber lediglich. „Die Produzenten stehen vor großen Herausforderungen, weil bereits die Beschaffung für die Herbstmode läuft und kostenintensive Verpflichtungen bestehen“, erklärt Gerd Oliver Seidensticker, Präsident des deutschen Modeverbandes GermanFashion.

Aufgrund dieser speziellen Situation steht eine ganze Branche mit Hunderttausenden von Arbeitsplätzen in Handel und Industrie vor dem Aus. Bereits die beschlossenen Öffnungsverbote bis Ende April werden zu zahlreichen Insolvenzen führen. „Wenn nicht spätestens im Mai die Geschäfte wieder öffnen, droht eine noch nie dagewesene Insolvenzwelle speziell von mittelständischen Händlern und Lieferanten“, warnen Jost und Seidensticker.

Dramatisch werden die Folgen für die Innenstädte und Shoppinglagen. Wenn neben der Gastronomie Boutiquen, Schuhgeschäfte und Modehäuser für immer ihre Türen schließen, werden die Lebensqualität und das Gewerbesteueraufkommen in den Städten und Gemeinden massiv sinken. „Der Internethandel kann diese Lücke nicht einmal in Ansätzen schließen“, mahnt Jost.

Die Verbände BTE und GermanFashion fordern daher rasche Hilfen von der Politik. Ein finanzieller Schutzschirm wäre die beste Lösung. Nach Ende der erzwungenen Ladenschließung wären ebenso neue unbürokratische Möglichkeiten für Sonntagsöffnungen eine echte Hilfe. „Der stationäre Handel braucht jede sich bietende Gelegenheit zum Verkauf seiner Produkte, damit er auch künftig noch am Standort bestehen und Arbeitsplätze in Handel und Industrie sichern kann!“, fordert der BTE-Präsident. Die Verbände werden mit einem konkreten Maßnahmenkatalog auf die Politik zugehen.

In the relatively short space of time since the last EuroShop in 2017, a lot has changed in retail. Everywhere you look, technology is transforming the way that consumers interact and transact with brands. At EuroShop 2020, 16 to 20 February in Düsseldorf, the 550 international exhibitors of the experience dimension “Retail Technology” (from the more than 2,300 international EuroShop exhibitors) provide impressive proof of this. In the run-up to EuroShop, we had a look around the international stores to see what is already being offered to customers in terms of high-tech.

Spanish fast-fashion retailer Zara has introduced self-service checkouts in store as well as interactive mirrors equipped with RFID; Nike is using local data at its House of Innovation 000 in New York City to stock shelves and restock them based on what the community wants; and at skincare brand SK-II’s Future X Smart Stores in Tokyo, Shanghai and Singapore, visitors are able to experience next generation skin counselling through a magic scan (an AI-enabled skin analysis that unlocks skin age and personalises product recommendations by sitting in front of a mirror for three minutes). There are even coffee shops using robot baristas to serve drinks, such as Café X in San Francisco and Ratio in Shanghai. And then, of course, there is Amazon Go, where customers can pick up shopping and walk out, with payment made automatically through the app.

Working together for a sustainable textile business: Looking back at World Textile Forum 2019

The 2019 World Textile Forum closes its doors after two successful and exciting days.

On September 9 and 10 renowned speakers and experts from the textile business gathered in Zurich to discuss opportunities in the changing textile world. Exciting talks and keynotes illustrated new possibilities for a more sustainable and digital textile industry. While one part of the versatile program focussed on “Sustainable Sourcing” with speakers such as Robert van de Kerkhof (Lenzing AG), Heinz Zeller (Hugo Boss), Daniel Gemperle (Calida) and Anna Maria Rugarli (VF), the topic of “Digital Production” became the centre of attention later thanks to experts like Torbjörn Netland (ETH), Maximilian Kürig (Karl Mayer), Maria Neidhold (Spoonflower) and Holger Max-Lang (Lectra). They offered new perspectives on the sustainable future of the textile industry, presenting innovative sustainable production and business models. The subsequent panels furthered the knowledge exchange between both attendees and speakers and led to lively discussions.

Heimtextil 2019: A lively start to the new furnishing season gives hope for a good business year ahead

The international home textiles industry has enjoyed a promising start at Heimtextil in Frankfurt am Main, which finished Friday, 11 January. The challenging economic situation and uncertainty in the retail sector were countered by a positive and confident mood at the world’s leading trade fair.

The international home textiles industry has enjoyed a promising start at Heimtextil in Frankfurt am Main, which finished Friday, 11 January. The challenging economic situation and uncertainty in the retail sector were countered by a positive and confident mood at the world’s leading trade fair.

3025 exhibitors from 65 countries* took the international trade fair for home and contract textiles to a 15-year high: ‘Exhibitors and visitors accepted the new trade fair concept with great enthusiasm and confirmed the trade fair’s position as the world’s most important meeting place for the industry. The quality of the decision-makers impressed the exhibitors, as did the number of new business contacts from 156 countries, especially international ones – thus enabling Heimtextil to set a new benchmark’, says Detlef Braun, Member of the Board of Management of Messe Frankfurt. ‘Around 67,500 visitors* ensured that there was a busy atmosphere in the halls, despite a slight decline due to various reasons, such as difficult travel conditions on account of the storms in the alpine region and airport strikes in Germany’. One topic that occupied both exhibitors and visitors was the current and future economic situation. A further challenge is the increasingly evident changes that are happening in trade. Increasing revenues and revenue shares in online retailing stand in the way of the efforts made by the stationary retail trade to maintain their inner-city businesses. ‘The small business specialist trade, but also department stores and multibrand stores, and thus the heart of our visitor target groups, are under pressure from the constantly increasing levels of e-commerce. With Heimtextil and our consumer goods fairs in general, we offer these retailers in particular clear perspectives and diverse inspiration in an ambiguous world’, continues Braun.

Heimtextil made it easier for its visitors to access valuable inspiration and business momentum thanks to an optimised trade fair concept and the associated new hall structure. ‘The new concept brought more visitors to the stand’, was the feedback from Andreas Klenk, Managing Director of Saum & Viebahn from Kulmbach in Franconia about hall 8.0 which offered textiles editeurs and manufacturers of curtain and sun protection systems a common platform for the first time. ‘It was the right decision to merge the different segments. We had high quality discussions with respect to both export and domestic business, and are satisfied with the trade fair’.

As part of the new concept, Heimtextil expanded its unique product range across the entire exhibition site and also included the new hall 12, which has been an additional architectural highlight on the Frankfurt exhibition grounds since September.

Top international companies from the Bed & Bath Fashion segment presented their wares here. For the company Curt Bauer from Aue in Saxony, the première of the new hall was a successful one. ‘We're very enthusiastic about the new hall 12. The product range there was very well received. We are very satisfied with the quality of visitors to our stand. In addition to a good frequency of German visitors, we are particularly pleased about growth from China and Russia’, says Managing Director Michael Bauer.

Natural materials, PET and ocean plastics 
Heimtextil set a standard in terms of sustainability: after the first global climate protection agreement for the textile industry was signed by 40 leading fashion companies, organisations and associations at the World Climate Conference in Katowice last December, the focus in Frankfurt was also on environmental progress in the textile industry. Numerous exhibitors presented progressive solutions, for example in the recycling of PET bottles and ocean plastic as well as in the use of certified natural materials. ‘Sustainability was the theme for us at this year’s Heimtextil. Major media players visited us and the 'Green Tour’ guided tour stopped by. We presented many things, including our first vegan duvet and fair silk products, all 100 per cent produced in Austria’, says Denise Hartmann, Marketing Manager at Hefel Textil. The topics of water consumption in the textile industry and microplastics also increasingly came to the fore. The exhibitor directory ‘Green Directory’ alone contained around 150 progressive companies listing sustainably produced textiles. The offer was supplemented by its own lecture series as well as theme-specific tours, which provided valuable impetus and
underpinned the pioneering green position of the trade fair.

Sleep becomes new lifestyle theme
Heimtextil also focused on sleep as one of the upcoming lifestyle trends. While a balanced diet and sufficient exercise are now a natural part of a healthy lifestyle, restorative sleep is still neglected* although it is one of the most important building blocks for long-term physical and mental well-being. At Heimtextil, a number of new products and aspects came to the fore that help people become sensitised to and analyse their sleep behaviour and promote healthy sleep. Around the redesigned hall 11.0 and in the adjoining lecture area ‘Sleep! The Future Forum’, representatives from the national and international bed industry enjoyed attractive product presentations and superb speeches on the topics of sustainability, hospitality, sport and digital.

In addition to the renowned trend show, the trade fair also focused on contract business, particularly in the hotel and hospitality sector, as well as decorative and upholstery fabrics, digital printing solutions and wallpapers.

The next Heimtextil in Frankfurt am Main – its 50th edition – will take place from 7 to 10 January 2020.

An Evening of Smart Innovation that Showcased New Standards for Fashion

On Thursday, March 22nd, C.L.A.S.S., with support from the Council of Fashion  Designers  of  America  (CFDA),  hosted  an  intimate  gathering  of  fashion’s  industry  leaders, educators, designers and members of the press to celebrate An Evening of Smart Innovation.

The event was beautifully orchestrated by Ginger Design, an exceptional team of Italian creatives, filmmakers, food and  textile  designers  as  a  way  to  create  a  unique  immersive  experience  telling  the  story  of  C.L.A.S.S.’ visionary journey. Thus, providing guests with an awareness and chance to embrace knowledge related to four key areas that set new standards for fashion vital to C.L.A.S.S.’ business philosophy:  Heritage, Smart Innovation, Circular Economy and Design Responsibility.

Imagination and responsibility at the forefront of the event, guests entered to view a film by Cristina Picchi that  represented harmony  between the various  phases  of  the  textile  process  and  the  cycles  of  natural elements.

The piece de resistance was a three-dimensional installation designed by Cécile Feilchenfeldt that  contained  exquisite  knits  allowing  guests  to  walk  through  the area to  inspire creativity and explore the  limitless possibilities using innovative  smart  materials.  So,  with  responsible  design  in  mind  the guests  were  able  to  touch  and  feel  the  luxurious  smart  textiles supported  by  sustainable  credentials  from  Bacx  by  Centro  Seta, Bemberg™ by Asahi Kasei, ECOTEC® by Marchi & Fildi, Organic Cotton  Colours,  Re.VerSo™,  ROICA™  by  Asahi  Kasei,  TINTEX Textiles, and Zignone. The new generation of beautiful cottons, rich silks, lush wools and opulent cashmeres showcased throughout the C.L.A.S.S. event currently available to the market.

Giusy Bettoni and the C.L.A.S.S. team from Milan and New  York, as well as several of their partner representatives from around the globe  were  on  hand  to  engage  designers  and  educators  and answer   questions   related   to   smart   materials   and   processes. Designers  and  educators  were  pleased  to  learn  about  the  new C.L.A.S.S. e-commerce site dedicated to emerging designers and fashion  startups,  as  well as  new  details  regarding  C.L.A.S.S. Customer data heralds new opportunities for fashion industry

Elise Beuriot, senior category leader, EU Luggage, Amazon, Olivier Dancot, VP of data, Lectra, Fabrizio Fantini, founder and CEO, Evo Pricing, and Gulnaz Khusainova, founder and CEO, Easysize, agreed straight away on one key point: the analysis of customer data lends itself to limitless applications along the entire fashion value chain. Its impact is immense, whether in terms of customer satisfaction, competitiveness, revenues or waste limitation.

As early as the design phase, a wealth of data offers many sources of inspiration for stylists. For teams in charge of collections, “complex models allow the analysis of data like online traffic and purchase history in order to design and offer the products that consumers expect, which is a priority for a company obsessed by the customer, like Amazon,” stated Elise Beuriot. For sales, “decisions based on data trigger millions of orders. The impact on the inventory is enormous,” she added.

“Fashion is an industry where unsold items generate a lot of waste. Algorithms and big data analysis can reduce left-overs by anticipating demand several weeks ahead in order to optimize the price and replenishment,” observed Fabrizio Fantini. “Fashion companies who exploit data to inform their decisions become more efficient. They are better armed to protect their margins, but can also sell for less, and potentially reach a larger number of consumers.”

Other IT models aggregate customer data in real time ‘to determine, among hundreds of factors, those which have the biggest influence on buying decisions. Value doesn’t necessarily lie in the volume of data but in the depth of the analyses,’ claimed Gulnaz Khusainova. Easysize is careful that collected data is anonymous, she underlined, because ‘consumers need to keep control of their data, and know how it is used’.
For editors of software dedicated to fashion businesses, and suppliers of cutting machines designed for the clothing industry, “analyzing usage data from our solutions enables the offer to evolve, making each step in the value chain more efficient and perfectly adapted to the needs of the brands, retailers and manufacturers. What is at stake is better quality products, placed on the market as quickly as possible and at a reduced cost,” explained Olivier Dancot.

“It is easy to collect data, but difficult to extract actionable information. Everything hinges on data analysis,” concluded Céline Abecassis-Moedas, professor and co-scientific director of the ‘Fashion & Technology’ Chair and moderator of the round table. “Due to its emotional dimension—from the stylist’s inspiration to the consumer’s desire to buy—fashion is not an industry like others. However, all the components that make up its ecosystem can truly benefit from the judicious exploitation of customer data. Examples discussed this evening illustrate the diversity of what is possible.
