Riri joins Oerlikon Group - Acquisition Completed

  • Oerlikon takes leadership position in luxury metalware

Oerlikon has successfully closed the acquisition of Riri, following the signing of the agreement announced on December 16, 2022.

Riri is a provider of coated metal accessories for the luxury fashion industry. This deal is the strategic next step to complement Oerlikon’s acquisition of Coeurdor in 2021. It expands Oerlikon’s foothold in the luxury market and together creates a leading platform in luxury metalware. As the demand for PVD coatings grows, Oerlikon’s PVD technologies that provide environmentally friendly solutions will accelerate the shift of the luxury goods industry to greener PVD technology.

Renato Usoni, CEO of Riri, will lead the newly formed luxury business unit of Oerlikon as President Oerlikon Luxury. Riri will operate as a separate business within the Surface Solutions division. Its zippers and buttons will continue to use the Riri and Cobrax brands on individual products. Oerlikon will consolidate Riri as of March 1, 2023.

Cobra’s report details key manufacturing innovations including:

  • The introduction of its innovative vacuum moulding technique that Cobra perfected just as the popularity of the sport exploded.
  • The manufacture of its own composite EPS forming moulds producing strong, watertight cores that are ready to use in production directly from the mould.
  • The mass production of sandwich boards with thermoformed PVC foam wrapped around the rails, increasing the board’s strength whilst keeping weight to a minimum.
  • Seamless rail construction
  • High-volume manufacturing capacity optimized for the finest prepreg carbon foils satisfying the current demand for windsurf foiling equipment
  • Development programs with on of the world’s leading carbon fibre fabric producers to create ever lighter biaxial fabrics.

“As we set aside time during the pandemic to upskill, innovate, and look to the future, it was also important that we referred back to our key technology successes. This got us thinking about so many of our developments which led us to create this innovation report. Customers can draw great confidence from the fact that the Cobra team is always working on tomorrow’s next generation product as well as building exceptional quality into each of today’s boards.” Bruce Wylie, CCO, Cobra International

COBRA International showcases its portfolio for vehicle systems at AUVSI XPONENTIAL 2022

Cobra International will showcase its portfolio of design and manufacturing solutions for the unmanned vehicle systems sector when the company exhibits alongside long-term partner HiveGround at the AUVSI XPONENTIAL 2022 conference.

Taking centre stage on the Cobra stand will be a fully assembled Swiftlet UAV. This compact tactical fixed wing UAV platform has a 5.5m wingspan and was developed by the Royal Thai Air Force and National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) for a broad range of survey, monitoring and search and rescue (SAR) operations. Cobra manufactured the 30kg Swiftlet composite airframe using a combination of CNC cut carbon sandwich internal structure and PVC foam sandwich skins using both high grade glass fibre and carbon fibre reinforcements.

Visitors to the Cobra stand will also see the VETAL, a twin rotor vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) drone with a composite airframe manufactured by Cobra for HiveGround, the Thailand based developer of UAV surveying and robotics systems.

At AUVSI XPONENTIAL, Cobra will also illustrate how the company leverages innovation and expertise developed in its water sports and automotive business to enhance its product offering to the UAV sector. Products on display include a Fliteboard electric foiling surfboard, pre-preg hydrofoil parts, lightweight medical prosthetics, flax and forged carbon parts, as well as a full set of visual carbon and painted automotive trims, each demonstrating the company’s high volume production capacity for ultra-light carbon composite structures.

The show will take place from the 25 to 28 April at the Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, Florida.

COBRA continues Its Partnership with Fliteboard

COBRA International is pleased to confirm its continued partnership with Fliteboard as the builders of the new Fliteboard Series 2.

Conceived in 2016, the Fliteboard range of electric foiling surfboards has established a leading position in the eFoil market. In early 2021, Fliteboard announced a package of evolutionary improvements to the original award-winning design for which COBRA has installed significant additional manufacturing capacity.

With Fliteboard growing rapidly, and thousands of boards now delivered across more than 80 countries,  COBRA will continue to support Fliteboard with additional moulds and lean manufacturing production lines added to reduce customer lead times. In addition to this production capacity expansion, COBRA has successfully met the technical challenges set by the Fliteboard team to incorporate all the new Series 2 board features into the existing production processes.

Fliteboard’s first composite models used a carbon fibre and Innegra sandwich laminate over a moulded EPS foam core, combining maximum strength, stiffness, and durability with a low overall board weight. The same construction concept is used for the Series 2 boards, with several new finishes added to the range along with lighter colour matched EVA deck pads and upgraded latches on the carbon fibre board lid. New wood grain and metallic paint finishes have been introduced with COBRA’s semi-transparent paint system used to save weight and display the stunning hexagonal weave pattern of the carbon and Innegra reinforcement fabrics.
