AFRY to design sustainable textile fibre biofactory for Altri in Spain

Altri has awarded AFRY engineering, site selection and integrated environmental authorization services assignment for a greenfield textile fiber factory in Spain. In addition, AFRY will support Altri to conceive, create and implement foundations for Industry 4.0 technologies in this new plant.

The demand for sustainable textile fibres is growing quickly globally. To support this growth, the Portuguese pulp producer Altri has become the industrial partner to public-private consortium Impulsa (Society for the Development of Strategic Projects of Galicia) as the lead investor and technologist to study the wood-based textile fibers biofactory exclusively. This biofactory will use Galician wood as the primary raw material together with recycled remains from the textile industry to produce dissolving pulp and Lyocell fibre. The plant will be designed based on the best available techniques (BAT), best environmental practices, as well as cutting-edge proven technologies and the production will be fossil-fuel-free. The project is expected to benefit from the “Next Generation EU” program.

Altri is responsible for designing and developing the biofactory project to transform wood into a textile fiber, evaluating site locations and exploring alliances with the entire value chain. Altri has assigned AFRY to support the project development and planned project implementation.  

The industrial biorefinery to be built from scratch will be able to provide the textile cluster of the Iberian peninsula with sustainable cellulosic fibers, contributing to the strengthening of the circular economy and decarbonisation of an important economic sector such as the textile sector.

AFRY has been involved in the project development from the very early stages. AFRY supported the project concept idea initially developed by Altri and led the preliminary feasibility study. A multi-disciplinary team of AFRY’s engineering and consulting experts is currently supporting Altri on the site selection activities, engineering and permitting processes.

HYPETEX® and adidas selected as JEC Innovation Awards 2022 Finalists

Hypetex®, a leader in colouring carbon fibre materials, is delighted to announce that its Hypetex® Kromaskin™ field hockey stick for adidas has been selected as a finalist for the 2022 JEC Innovation Awards.

Hypetex® was commissioned by adidas to develop a market leading hockey stick differentiated from existing equipment not just by its unique pigmented carbon fibre finish, but also by its game changing hitting power and consistency. The patented range of Kromaskin™ sticks, created with support from project partners Textreme® and Marque Makers, was found to outperform competitors in a benchmark study against eight other premium hockey sticks carried out by Loughborough’s Sports Technology Institute (STI).

Hypetex® lead the design, engineering, materials, and production process development for the adidas field hockey stick project. By incorporating the stick’s finish colour within the outermost carbon fibre layer, the stick mould could be adjusted outwards, placing the highly structural spread tow materials right at the outer extremities of the mould cavity, increasing mechanical performance and maximising the structural benefits of the composite materials used.

Whilst the Kromaskin™ surface provides a stunning depth of colour with minimal finishing required after demoulding, the Hypetex® technology, including an epoxy based expanding microsphere system used in the core, delivers significant performance gains on the hockey pitch. In tests at the STI, adidas Kromaskin™ sticks had up to 16% higher coefficient of restitution (COR), meaning they will return more energy and the ball will travel faster. In addition, through the production led design and materials used, the variation in COR was 70% less than the other sticks on test, a significant reduction in the production inconsistencies common with the manufacturing of performance sporting goods.

Trends run and pass quickly, but Iluna lace remains a certainty in all its forms, variations and colors. Since 2017 Iluna has been using only sustainable and certified ROICA™ stretch yarns from the ROICA Eco-Smart™ family, while the percentage of sustainable references has risen from 3% in 2018 to 52% in 2021.

Both include lace made with the responsible 6.6 polyamide yarn Amni Soul Eco® and the degradable stretch fiber ROICA™ V550, combined with natural vegetable dyes with OEKO TEX and GOTS certifications.
  • The union of a chenille yarn blended with FSC-certified viscose and Renycle® yarn, a product obtained by recycling nylon 6, a high-value material with excellent strength, dyeing, softness and versatility, gives life to surprising new Textronic. The embossed designs with 3D effect create a cloud effect that, combined with Lurex, gives unexpected glows.
  • GRS-certified tulles printed with GREENDROP technology, the new GOTS-certified digital pigment printing system, with lower energy consumption and low water waste, thanks to an internal closed-circuit process for water recycling.

Lenzing’s new prize for research projects on ethical and sustainable fashion

The Lenzing Group will present the Young Scientist Award for outstanding research in the field of fibers and textiles for the first time in 2022. The Dornbirn Global Fiber Congress (GFC Dornbirn) is an ideal platform for the recently launched research competition. Bachelor’s and master’s degree students will have the opportunity to submit their scientific work in the categories of fashion and the circular economy, textile recycling and the innovative use of biobased fibers to a jury of well-known industry experts.

The jury consists of Karla Magruder (Founder of Acceleration Circularity), Friedericke von Wedel-Parlow (Beneficial Design Institute Berlin) and Dieter Eichinger (Head of Standardization and Innovation, Secretary-General of BISFA). The winning project will receive a prize of EUR 5,000. The aim is to promote the students’ work and create a platform for networking with the textile and fiber industry.

The Campaign
The campaign focuses on the guiding thematic color behind the collection. In the Western world, red is commonly associated with love , romance and sensuality. While in the East, red is attributed to good fortune and joy. Wherever you are, it’s clear that this color represents positivity. The concept is centered around bringing people together from all different backgrounds through this one color that’s sentimental to so many. This theme is illustrated through enhanced lighting, bold yet minimal production design, elevated styling and most importantly the international cast. Cultural cues from specific iconography and symbols are explored in visual motifs with sensitivity and intention. IVY PARK pays homage to various cultures inspired by this color, incorporating red through a futuristic yet authentic lens.

The Collection
No matter how you define it, love - most importantly love of one’s self - is at the core of IVY PARK ’s newest drop. Bold and sexy looks are an integral part of IVY HEART, which is aptly decked out in a spectrum of vibrant reds, playful pinks, and nuanced neutrals. Ihre Ergebnisse zum Thema „open space - der Camper der Zukunft“ präsentieren die Studierenden nun live online.

Camping boomt – der Urlaub mit dem Camper ist in und verspricht auch in Pandemiezeiten Flexibilität, Freiheit und Unabhängigkeit. Laut Caravaning Industrie Verband (CIVD) hat sich die Zahl der Neuzulassungen in den vergangen vier Jahren mehr als verdoppelt. Camper sind begehrte Fahrzeuge für unbeschwerte Urlaube. Rein in den Camper und einfach mal schnell aus dem Alltag entfliehen? Das Prinzip ist, nicht erst seit knapp 80.000 Neuzulassungen im Jahr 2021 (CIVD), bekannt und bewährt.

Studierende des Studiengangs Transportation Interior Design haben sich im Wintersemester 2021/2022 im Kooperationsprojekt „open space“ mit der Firma Rocket Camper aus Remshalden intensiv mit neuen, innovativen Nutzungsmöglichkeiten und Konzepten für Wohnmobile und Camper auseinandergesetzt.

Im Mittelpunkt stand dabei die Frage, wie clevere Verwandlungslösungen Räume vergrößern, individuell erlebbar machen und das Alltags- oder Urlaubsleben bereichern und erleichtern können. Gefragt waren Ideen zur Raum-Erweiterung und Strukturierung unter Einsatz von smarten Oberflächen. Basierend auf Analysen aktueller Lifestyle Szenarien ging es für die Studierenden vor allem um die Fragestellung, welche neuen Aufgaben ein solch innovativer Camper übernehmen und damit einen Mehrwert für seinen Nutzer bieten kann.

Ein Camper als mitwachsendes Raumwunder für Patchworkfamilien? Ein Camper mit individuellen Möglichkeiten für Hundebesitzer? Ein Camper als Arbeitsplatz? Ein Camper, der Stress reduziert und das Leben bereichert? Wie kann die Umgebung nach drinnen geholt werden? Smarte Oberflächen, die beim Fokussieren helfen und welches Thema spielt dabei das autonome Fahrzeug?

The N.SVR®123SP computerized knitting machine features a special loop presser bed, capable of producing hybrid inlay fabrics with both knit and weave characteristics. Demand for such novel fabrics are very high across a wide range of applications, from fashion apparel to sportswear, innerwear, outerwear, uniforms and other functional clothing, as well as home furnishing and technical textiles. Shown in 18G at the SHIMA SEIKI booth, N.SVR®123SP will also feature the special i-Plating option, capable of alternating yarn colors in any pattern, producing jacquard-like designs using plain jersey stitch. Plating can be performed within the same course and for individual needles. In combination with the loop presser and spring-type moveable sinker system even greater diversity in knit design is possible. An SVR®123SP machine in 14G with i-Plating option will also be on display at the booth of yarn spinner IAFIL S.p.A. as well.

APEXFiz™ is subscription-based design software that maintains the proven functions that have made SHIMA SEIKI’s SDS®-ONE APEX series design systems so popular with fashion designers. Installed on personal computers, those strengths are now enhanced with the added versatility to adapt to different work styles and business environments including teleworking and telecommuting. APEXFiz™ software supports the creative side of fashion from planning and design to colorway evaluation, realistic fabric simulation and 3D virtual sampling. Virtual samples are a digitized version of sample making that are accurate enough to be used effectively as prototypes, replacing physical sampling and consequently reducing time, cost and material that otherwise go to waste. This is then processed by a creative studio specializing in digital content to provide static and animated 3D virtual representations. The process shows how to use the latest DX tools to provide accurate representation of a finished garment without having to produce any fabric, converting the conventionally wasteful process of sample-making into a sustainable one.

nova-Institute: BioRECO2VER project - Conversion of CO2 into chemical building blocks

CO2 as renewable carbon source
Carbon is the main element in numerous materials used in industrial processes and in our daily lives. It is currently mostly provided from fossil sources. But what if carbon could be used directly from CO2 emissions? Biotechnology shows particularly great potential for the eco-effective conversion of climate-damaging CO2 emissions into valuable basic chemicals. A consortium of 12 partners investigated this pathway in the EU-funded BioRECO2VER project, examining the conversion of CO2 emissions from refineries and the cement industry into the chemical building blocks isobutene (C4H8) and lactate (C2H6O3).

Innovative chemo-enzymatic concept for CO2 Capture
Project partner Luleå University of Technology (LTU) focused on the first process step of capturing and concentrating CO2 from industrial point sources. Their team developed a hybrid chemo-enzymatic process consisting of a novel solvent blend and an ultrastable carbonic anhydrase (CA) enzyme. The solvent blend included an amino acid ionic liquid and a tertiary amine and displayed a good compromise between enzyme compatibility, absorption rate, capacity and desorption potential. In addition, LTU generated ultrastable enzyme mutants that showed 50% increased resistance to selected flue gas inhibitors compared to the original CA. This 3-component CO2 capture process was scaled up in a pilot rig, and the set-up further used for real off gas pre-treatment in the project.

Two unique pilots for biotechnological CO2 Conversion/Utilization
The biotechnological conversion of (captured) CO2 and the co-substrate hydrogen by microorganisms poses technical and economic challenges because it takes place in the liquid phase and the substrates are gases which are poorly soluble. The BioRECO2VER project investigated two approaches to address this: fermentation under elevated pressure and bio-electrochemistry with in situ production of hydrogen.

Pressurized fermenter
Project coordinator VITO designed a flexible and multifunctional high-pressure fermenter, customized for research activities with advanced online sensors, monitoring and control, and also including a membrane filtration unit to achieve high concentrations of the microbial biocatalysts. The set-up was broadly tested in the BioRECO2VER project both with pure CO2 and CO2-rich off-gases but can also be used for investigations involving other poorly soluble gases, such as methane, oxygen, or synthesis gas. Pressures up to 10 bar can be applied.

First solely CO2-based bio-electrochemical platform
University of Girona designed and tested a bio-electrochemical platform. The key differentiators of the pilot plant are:

  • Two parallel lines to test engineered strains and bio-electrochemical systems
  • Fully automated pilot plant capable to control key operational parameters (pCO2, pO2, pH2, pH, Temperature) to intensify the process performance
  • Solid-liquid separation unit (membrane) to recover the planktonic cells and return them into the bio-electrochemical systems.

This unique infrastructure will be used beyond the project to support further research and development activities in the broad area of CO2 capture and conversion.

ANDRITZ to supply a spunlace line to Biosphere, Ukraine

International technology group ANDRITZ has received an order from the leading Ukrainian manufacturer of household and hygiene products, Biosphere Corporation, to deliver its first complete neXline spunlace line. The high-capacity spunlace line will double the company’s current production capacity and is designed to process various types of fibers, such as polyester/viscose blends and natural fibers. International technology group ANDRITZ has received an order from the leading Ukrainian manufacturer of household and hygiene products, Biosphere Corporation, to deliver its first complete neXline spunlace line. The ANDRITZ spunlace line will enable Biosphere to produce fabrics from 30 to 70 gsm, with an hourly output of up to 3,000 kg/hr after the second commissioning phase. Maison & Objet Paris postponed from January to March 2022

Since few days, most countries have been facing a new wave of Covid, reinforced by the rapid expansion of the Omicron variant. Impacted by this surge, many companies among the 1,700 companies that have confirmed they will attend M&O in January at the Parc des Expositions of Paris-Nord Villepinte, indicate that they don’t want their employees to take risks and are now alerting to the disruptions they are experiencing in their operations. The obligations of compliance with isolation rules, even when people are vaccinated, and the numerous work absences are in fact starting to seriously disrupt the functioning of their services, supply or production circuits.

Moreover, facing the peak of contamination, several countries are currently taking restrictive measures regarding international travel. Measures which are now delaying or discouraging visitors from confirming their attendance. In addition, the French government has announced, December 27th 2021 a 2.000 people gauge for major events, so probably fairs such as Maison&Objet Paris.

Under these circumstances, seeking to avoid a risky situation and committed to making all efforts to ensure an optimal return on investment for exhibitors, buyers and specifiers, the SAFI decides to postpone the next session of the Maison&Objet trade event from 24th to 28th March 2022. Period for which we hope to see an improvement in the situation.

Exhibitors who have already confirmed their registration and location may have the same location conditions, which will allow them to keep the same stand showcase. Likewise, visitors who have already ordered their badges for the January edition will of course have access to the show from March 24th to 28th, 2022.

With an opening scheduled for the day before, Maison&Objet In The City, an event organised on the sidelines of the Maison&Objet fair and offering a journey of discoveries in the heart of Parisian showrooms, will be held from 23 to 28 March 2022.

By postponing the fair until the end of Q1, SAFI wishes to bring together the best operational and healthy conditions to allow actors in the art of living, decoration, and design to be inspired, to accelerate their development and to forge new business relationships

In summary: the next editions of the Maison&Objet fairs will therefore be: March 24th - 28th, 2022 + September 8th - 12th, 2022
