Das Kick-Off-Meeting zum Projekt "Trends und Designfaktoren für Wasserstoffdruckbehälter", das kürzlich bei der AZL Aachen GmbH stattfand, war eine erfolgreiche Veranstaltung, die mehr als 37 Top-Experten auf dem Gebiet der Verbundtechnologien zusammenbrachte. Mit diesem Treffen wurde ein solides Fundament für das Joint Partner Projekt gelegt, das derzeit ein Konsortium von 20 Unternehmen aus der gesamten Wertschöpfungskette der Verbundwerkstoff-Druckbehälter umfasst: Ascend Performance Materials, Cevotec GmbH, Chongqing Polycomp International Corp. Das Kick-Off-Meeting zum Projekt "Trends und Designfaktoren für Wasserstoffdruckbehälter", das kürzlich bei der AZL Aachen GmbH stattfand, war eine erfolgreiche Veranstaltung, die mehr als 37 Top-Experten auf dem Gebiet der Verbundtechnologien zusammenbrachte. Das Projekt folgt dem bewährten AZL-Ansatz eines Joint Partner Projekts, das darauf abzielt, Technologie- und Markteinblicke sowie Benchmarking verschiedener Material- und Produktionskonzepte zu ermöglichen und gleichzeitig die Experten entlang der Wertschöpfungskette zu vernetzen.

Das Kick-Off-Meeting diente nicht nur als Plattform, um neue Kontakte zu knüpfen und sich über die Expertise und Interessen der Konsortiumsmitglieder im Bereich Wasserstoffdruckbehälter zu informieren, sondern legte auch den Grundstein für die Ausrichtung der kommenden anspruchsvollen Projektphasen. Als Grundlage für die interaktive Diskussionsrunde erläuterte das AZL den Hintergrund, die Motivation und den detaillierten Arbeitsplan. Im Mittelpunkt des Dialogs standen die Hauptziele, die größten Herausforderungen, der Beitrag zur Wettbewerbsfähigkeit und die Prioritäten, mit denen die Erwartungen der Projektpartner am besten erfüllt werden können.

Die Diskussionen betrafen regulatorische Fragen, die sich wandelnde Wertschöpfungskette sowie die Versorgung mit und die Eigenschaften von Schlüsselmaterialien wie Kohlenstoff- und Glasfasern und Harzen. Das Konsortium definierte Untersuchungen zu verschiedenen Fertigungstechnologien, um deren Ausgereiftheit und potenziellen Nutzen zu bewerten. Konstruktionsauslegungen, einschließlich Liner, Boss-Design und Wickelmuster, werden unter Berücksichtigung ihrer Auswirkungen auf die mobile und stationäre Lagerung eingehend geprüft. Die Gruppe interessiert sich ebenfalls für kosteneffiziente Prüfmethoden und Zertifizierungsverfahren sowie für die Aussichten auf ein Recycling zu Endlosfasern und die Verwendung nachhaltiger Materialien. Es wurde um Einblicke in die künftige Nachfrage nach Wasserstofftanks, in die Bedürfnisse und Strategien der OEMs und in technologische Entwicklungen zur Herstellung wirtschaftlicherer Tanks gebeten.

Die Sitzung unterstrich die Bedeutung von CAE-Entwürfen für Fasermuster, die Eignung von Software und den anwendungsabhängigen Einsatz von duroplastischen und thermoplastischen Entwürfen.

Das erste Report Meeting wird auch den Rahmen für die nächste Projektphase abstecken, in der das AZL Ingenieurteam Referenzdesigns erarbeitet. Diese Designs werden eine Reihe von Druckbehälterkonfigurationen mit einer Vielzahl von Materialien und Produktionskonzepten abdecken. Ziel ist es, Modelle zu entwickeln, die nicht nur die aktuellen technologischen Möglichkeiten widerspiegeln, sondern auch tiefe Einblicke in die Kostenanalyse verschiedener Produktionstechnologien, deren CO2-Fußabdruck, Recyclingaspekte und Skalierbarkeit bieten.

Das AZL Projekt ist weiterhin offen für zusätzliche Teilnehmer. Unternehmen, die an einer Teilnahme an dieser zukunftsorientierten Initiative interessiert sind, sind eingeladen, sich mit Philipp Fröhlig in Verbindung zu setzen.

Ascend buys majority stake in recycler Circular Polymers

Ascend Performance Materials has purchased a majority stake in California-based Circular Polymers, a recycler of post-consumer, high-performance polymers including polyamide 6 and 66, polypropylene and polyester (PET). The deal provides Ascend with a consistent supply of high-quality PCR materials for its ReDefyne™ sustainable polyamides, launched at K 2022.

Circular Polymers, which as part of the deal is renamed Circular Polymers by Ascend, reclaims and processes post-consumer carpet via a unique technology and has redirected approximately 85 million pounds of waste from landfills into new goods since 2018.

“We are focused on helping our customers reach their sustainability goals and Circular Polymers by Ascend provides materials that offer strong performance with a considerably smaller environmental footprint, compared to other technologies like pyrolysis,” said Phil McDivitt, president and CEO of Ascend. “Since we launched ReDefyne, the demand for our circular products has been significant across all segments of our business, including automotive, consumer, electronics and high-performance fibers and textiles.”

An international team of scientists and engineers from the University of Cambridge, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, ResInnova Labs and Ascend Performance Materials has found that a nylon fabric embedded with zinc ions successfully inactivated 99% of the viruses that cause COVID-19 and the common flu.

Face masks, protective clothing and filters are used to slow the spread of viruses. But poor-quality masks can harbor active viruses from infected wearers, posing a transmission risk.

“A major challenge is absorption and inactivation,” said Vikram Gopal, Ph.D., co-senior author and chief technology officer at Ascend Performance Materials. “Respiratory viral illnesses, such as COVID-19, and the flu, are transmitted through droplets and aerosols. Polypropylene, the material in commonly used disposable masks, is a hydrophobic plastic and does not absorb moisture. Instead, the viruses can sit on the surface of the mask, posing a transmission risk when the mask is handled.”

Cotton also has problems, Dr. Gopal said. “Cotton effectively absorbs moisture, but it doesn’t inactivate the virus – again, posing a transmission risk,” he said. In the paper published in ACS Applied Materials Interfaces, the researchers described how a fabric made of nylon 6,6 embedded with active zinc ions absorbed virus-containing moisture droplets and effectively inactivated the particles. The fabric produced a 2-log, or 99%, reduction of virus particles in one hour.

The research team also was able to demonstrate that nylon with active zinc ions remains stable over time, keeping its virus-inactivating properties after 50 washes. “The study shows how nylon textile fabric with zinc outperforms the widely used cotton and polypropylene materials at virus absorption and inactivation,” Dr. Gopal said. The findings have significant implications for future development of PPE, Dr. Gopal said. “Pathogen-free PPE does more than just cut down the risk of transmitting the virus,” Gopal said. “By making PPE washable and reusable, you reduce the need for single-use products, keeping hundreds of millions of masks out of landfills.”

Ascend expands HiDura™ LCPA production capacity

  • New capacity brought online to meet growing demand

Ascend Performance Materials has expanded production capacity for HiDura long-chain polyamides in its Greenwood, S.C., plant. The multi-million dollar expansion will help the company meet growing demand for its new product line.

Launched in Nov. 2020, Ascend’s HiDura PA610 and 612 products are used in a variety of consumer goods, industrial, renewable energy, automotive and electric vehicle applications. “Exceptional ductility, UV weatherability and hydrolysis resistance give HiDura resins and engineered plastics reliable, long-term performance in some of the harshest conditions,” said Kaan Gunes, business manager for HiDura at Ascend. Gunes cited applications in solar photovoltaic supports, battery seals and brush bristles to illustrate the versatility and durability of HiDura. “Each of these parts faces extreme conditions, whether the 25 years a solar PV installation will be exposed to the elements or the constant contact with corrosive chemicals inside a battery cell. The various grades we developed are designed to improve the reliability of our customers’ products.”

Ascend, which is the largest fully integrated producer of polyamide 66 resin, used its extensive polymerization knowledge to expand capacity at its Greenwood facility. “We have been polymerizing PA66 in Greenwood for decades,” said Michael Walters, senior site director for Ascend in Greenwood. “Our people understand how to consistently produce high-performance, high-quality materials safely and were excited to see the success of HiDura build off their work.” Ascend continues to expand its HiDura grades to meet the growing needs of its customers.

The S Group offers complete supply chain management for apparel brands, including product development, manufacturing, logistics, quality assurance, packaging and order fulfillment. The company lists some of the world’s most recognized brands among its partners, including Lululemon, New Balance and Mack Weldon. Athleisure, performance, scrubs, and seamless products such as intimates, leggings, active wear, socks and gaiters will be available.

Gary Peck, CEO of The S Group, says his team is excited about the commercial potential of Acteev, especially given the new reality of global health concerns. “Garment design has primarily focused on functionality, sustainability and comfort,” said Peck. “The past year has made us all aware that safety can be a valuable feature of fabrics as well, and Acteev checks all those boxes.”

Acteev is Ascend’s patent-pending technology that embeds zinc ions in a polymer to create fibers with long-lasting antimicrobial properties. The result is a fabric that destroys odor-causing bacteria and fungi. Acteev technology is available in a wide range of textiles featuring the flexibility, softness and durability of nylon 6,6.

Recent testing on knit fabric completed at the University of Cambridge has demonstrated that Acteev technology deactivates the virus that causes COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, with 99.9% efficacy on contact1. Ascend is working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and other governmental agencies to obtain the appropriate regulatory clearances to make specific claims regarding the technology’s antiviral properties.

Ascend Performance Materials has launched several new grades of its HiDura™ long-chain polyamides for engineered plastics, monofilaments and cable ties. HiDura polyamide 610 and 612 are designed to provide exceptional dimensional stability and long life with enhanced resistance to chemicals, impact and abrasion.

Ascend, one of the largest fully integrated producer of PA66 resin, has developed multiple new grades of HiDura PA610 and 612 for use in automotive fuel system and brake line applications, cable ties for solar power systems, battery seals and monofilaments for brush bristles.

Im Zuge seiner globalen Wachstumsstrategie hat Ascend Performance Materials nun die Akquisitionen der italienischen Firmen Poliblend und Esseti Plast abgeschlossen. Mit diesen strategischen Zukäufen erweitert Ascend sein Portfolio um weitere technische Kunststoffe, Rezyklate und Masterbatches.

„Poliblend und Esseti Plast ergänzen unser derzeitiges Angebot auf hervorragende Weise“, sagte John Saunders, Vizepräsident Europa bei Ascend. „Unsere Erfahrung und Stärke als voll integrierter Großhersteller von Polyamid 66 wird nun durch weitere PA66 Materialien, PA6, POM, Rezyklaten und dem umfangreichen Masterbatch-Portfolio von Esseti Plast erweitert. The acquisition includes a manufacturing facility in Mozzate, Italy, the masterbatch portfolio of Esseti Plast GD and the engineering plastics portfolio of Poliblend, which consists of virgin and recycled grades of PA66, PA6, PBT and POM.

Poliblend offers compounding and masterbatch services, including color and additive concentrates that enhance the appeal and end-use performance of plastics products, packaging and fibers. Its certifications include ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO TS 16949.

Giancarlo D’Ottavio, Poliblend’s president, will continue to run Poliblend’s operations and join Ascend’s European management team. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The acquisition is expected to close in the second quarter.

Ascend stellt seine neuen Produkte Vydyne® XHT, LCPA und HTPA auf der K 2019 vor

HOUSTON – Ascend Performance Materials kündigte heute die Markteinführung mehrerer neuer Spezial-Polyamide auf der K 2019 an, um den wachsenden Anforderungen seiner Kunden zu begegnen. Unter den neuen Produkten befinden sich langkettigen Polyamide, Vydyne® XHT und neue hochtemperatur Polyamide.

Vydyne XHT, ein neues Portfolio aus hitzestabilisiertem Polyamid 66 und Copolymeren, ist widerstandsfähig gegenüber Langzeittemperaturen von bis zu 230°C. Alle XHT-Typen bieten ein ausgezeichnetes Fließverhalten und eignen sich als Regranulat, wodurch überschüssiges Material wiederaufbereitet und die Produktionseffizienz gesteigert werden kann.

Ascend stellt außerdem ein neues Produktportfolio aus den langkettigen Polyamiden PA610 und PA612 vor. Mit ihrer geringen Feuchtigkeitsaufnahme und einer hohen Beständigkeit gegenüber Chemikalien und UV-Strahlung eignen sich die langkettigen Polyamiden für eine Vielzahl von Anwendungen, darunter Monofilamente, Batterieabdichtungen, Kabelbinder, Automobilkühlsysteme, Kraftstoffanschlüsse sowie Sportartikel.

Mit der Akquisition erhält Ascend eine europäische Fertigungsbasis und erweitert seine globalen Compoundierkapazitäten.
