Pre-Upholsterers in the upholstered furniture industry prepare in the series production
of upholstered furniture, the individual components of upholstered products for assembly.
Pre-Upholsterers work mainly in the furniture industry. In addition, they may be employed
in enterprises specialized in interior design trade, automotive and textile industries.
First of all pre-upholsterers in the upholstered furniture industry control the material input.
Therefore they take the supplied materials, e.g. suspensions, upholstery materials and fabrics,
and examine them in terms of quality and completeness. To prepare the individual components for
the assembly of upholstered products, pre-upholsterer choose from natural or synthetic padding
and stuffing materials and prepare it, they also prepare the frame and cushioning and attach the
mesh or the seat belts.
Pre-upholsterers produce the so-called form of natural filling
materials or of prefabricated foam made parts, the supporting part of a cushion. In the next step,
they make the elastic part of a cushion, where they use e.g. horse hair or synthetic materials with
similar properties. They fix the padding with nails and special adhesive to the frame and cover it
with layers of cotton wool in different thicknesses. They also pull in foam into the pillows or fill
mattress pillows with feathers, horsehair, foam or other cushioning materials. They carry the prepared
parts to the upholstery, where the parts are assembled and covered with fabric or leather covers.
Pre-upholsterers in the upholstered furniture industry work especially
in large production facilities and workshops, partly they stay in storages. Mostly pre-upholsterers are
part of a team, but they do their work individually. They coordinate assignments with their superiors.
They have contact with suppliers, assembly specialists and upholsterers.
Pre-upholsterers in the upholstered furniture industry handle e.g.
sewing machines, but do also many of their tasks by hand, for example, they attach the upholstery to the
frame with nails and special adhesive. Particularly in large warehouses pre-upholsterers are exposed to
the noise of the machines, dust and fumes, e.g. of adhesives, paints and stains. They often work in several
layers, because usually they produce in large numbers and the machines need to be utilized. With a
corresponding order situation there will be time pressure.
Access
To exercise this job usually a training in upholstery is required.
