Freudenberg: South American hygiene segment sold
The hygiene market has been evolving form regional to global scales. Taking this into account, the producer of technical textiles Freudenberg Performance Materials Holding SE & Co. KG, Weinheim/Germany, has sold its South American branch of hygiene products to the manufacturer of nonwoven fabrics Fitesa, Gravataí/Brazil. Concentrating efforts on other branches, Freudenberg will provide Fitesa with state-of-the-art production facility.
At Freudenberg Hygiene Brazil Ltda., Jacareí/Brazil, Freudenberg has been active in Brazil since 1985, with up to 100 employees. Authorities have yet to permit the transaction.
Freudenberg’s South American business in clothing as well as shoes and leathers will not be affected by this disposal.

Edana: nonwovens production in Greater Europe +1.3% in 2018
The international association serving the nonwovens and related industries, Edana, Brussels/Belgium, has released European annual statistics for 2018, offering a comprehensive picture of the nonwovens industry in Greater Europe.
According to the figures, the overall production of nonwovens in Europe grew by around 1.3% in 2018 to reach almost 2.8 million tons. Over the last decade, the annual average growth rate has been nearly 4%.
Overall spunmelt output was almost flat (+0.9% over 2017) while drylaid technologies recorded an increase of 2.1%. The highest apparent growth within drylaid production (in tons) was observed in air-through and hydroentanglement bonding processes, with respectively +7.6% and +4.7%. The hygiene market, still the main end-use for nonwovens by volume, grew by 1.7% in 2018, following a growth of 2.7% in 2017. The main driver of this increase was the incontinence market.
The most meaningful developments were in sales of roll goods for personal care wipes (+2.9%), electronics (+2.8%) and food & beverage applications (+5.7%).
