Manchester Fashion Week, running from September 9th to 11th, will unite emerging designers and established brands on a platform that bridges Manchester's industrial heritage with cutting-edge innovation. 

The event traces a path from historic Mancunian mills to contemporary catwalks, honouring textile traditions while accelerating toward fashion's future.

The event will be spearheaded by some of the industry’s renowned thought-leaders, including Carry Somers, Founder of global movement Fashion Revolution and Safia Minney, MBE, award-winning social entrepreneur and founder of People Tree, a pioneer of sustainable and fairtrade fashion.

The main event for Manchester Fashion Week will be centred around the vibrant St. John’s area, with its official hub set in the newly refurbished Campfield - one of the city’s most exciting cultural venues.

Manchester Fashion Week will serve as a platform for honest dialogue, visionary thinking, and radical collaboration, activating spaces across the city and inviting brands, creators, and communities to participate. 

The inaugural pilot will be industry-led, with public experiences and cultural events lighting up Manchester throughout September.

Kraig Biocraft Laboratories: Expanding Spider Silk via Strategic Government Collaboration

Kraig Biocraft Laboratories, Inc., a leader in spider silk technology, announced the finalizing of a significant three-year collaborative agreement with a key government agency in Southeast Asia to expand the scale and security of its recombinant spider silk manufacturing platform.
 
This agreement, expected to be signed before the end of July, marks the culmination of years of relationship-building and demonstrated performance by Kraig Labs and its proprietary spider silk technologies. The agreement is designed to accelerate the Company's growth by providing access to previously unavailable rearing facilities, supporting infrastructure, and technical resources.
 
Under the terms of this collaboration, Kraig Labs will work closely with government specialists to optimize and expand spider silk production. The collaboration will unlock new production capacity, enabling Kraig Labs to significantly scale its hybridized silkworm operations.

Importantly, this agreement also includes provisions for the creation of parallel rearing operations, a key component in the Company’s long-term roadmap to mitigate production risk and eliminate single points of failure. By distributing parent strain and egg production across multiple independent facilities, Kraig Labs is further securing its supply chain and increasing throughput capacity to meet future demand.
 
Work under this agreement is anticipated to begin in August. This collaboration will serve as a foundational element of the Company’s expanding global spider silk manufacturing strategy, highlighting the growing confidence in the Company's pioneering biomaterials.

Recycled content and low CO2 footprint
Evolon® textiles have a small carbon footprint because their manufacturing process uses low-CO2 energy, and the fabrics are lightweight and reusable. Furthermore, Evolon® packaging materials are made of up to 85% recycled content. “By replacing virgin raw materials with recycled content, we’ve been able to cut the carbon footprint of our fabric production by 35%. We are actively exploring the possibility of manufacturing Evolon® using 100% recycled content to drive CO₂ emissions down even further,” explains Jean-François Kerhault, Director Global Sales & Marketing General Industry at Freudenberg Performance Materials. 

Although Evolon® fabrics are lightweight – from 80gsm to 300gsm – they nevertheless still provide the high mechanical strength properties required for automotive packaging applications. This conserves raw materials and reduces the weight of transported loads. In particular, the new Evolon® Ultra Force is approximately 50% lighter than PVC-based materials with similar high mechanical strength, while containing a minimum 50% recycled content and no PVC.

Waste prevention
Evolon® materials play an important role in decreasing waste when it comes to transporting automotive parts. Above all, the high-end materials provide superior surface performance which directly reduces scrap of transported parts. 
In addition, packaging waste is also prevented because Evolon® technical packaging textiles are designed for reusable packaging containers. Single-use packaging is avoided. Moreover, Evolon® packaging material lasts for the entire production cycle of a car model.

Kraig Biocraft: Second Production Facility to deliver Spider Silk to European-based global Luxury Market

New architecture lays foundation for higher output, continuous batch production, and prepares company for spider silk delivery to european-based global luxury market leader.

Kraig Biocraft Laboratories, a global leader in spider silk technology, announced the addition of a second parallel production facility, three new advanced spider silk strains, and the immediate launch of a new diapausing system for production. This marks three critical advancements in the Company’s high-performance spider silk manufacturing and commercialization to significantly increase production yields and spun silk quality.

Kraig Labs completed the development of three new spider silk strains, which are now in the field. These strains, developed over the last year, were designed to complement the Company’s existing BAM-1 hybrid by improving hybrid vigor and increasing silk yield. One of these stains was designed as a replacement for an existing BAM-1 parent lines. Two of these strains were bred to produce silkworms suitable for controlled diapause.

Diapause refers to the silkworm’s natural wintering period, a process which can be replicated with a 90-day cold treatment of the silkworm eggs. Diapausing silkworm strains are the gold standard for producing premium silk. One of the Company’s key initial target customers is a widely-renowned producer of the world’s finest fabrics and garments, crafted from the highest-quality fibers. Kraig Labs is committed to meeting those standards with its spider silk and the shift to diapausing egg production, along with the addition of a second facility, are key drivers in achieving that goal and increasing production.

Thus far, the Company’s production center has operated under a batch production model, bypassing diapause and limiting production to 8 or 9 batches per year. The shift to parallel facilities and the diapausing of eggs (artificial wintering utilizing cold storage treatment) will enable nearly continuous production. These two facilities will operate in tandem to feed that production. While egg production from one facility enters cold storage, the second facility will prepare the next rearing cycle, ensuring a continuous flow of eggs to supply production operations. This new collaborative production system will dramatically expand production capacity far beyond what any single facility could produce independently.

As Kraig Labs rolls out these significant improvements to its operations, the company is undertaking a production transition period, which includes a 90-day cold treatment cycle for the new diapausing hybrid eggs. This wintering process is widely recognized for yielding stronger, finer silk and significantly larger cocoons than non-diapausing silk. Over the next several months, operational emphasis will shift away from finished silk production and focus on expanding parent line populations and generating the next round of hybrid eggs that Kraig Labs plans to begin releasing in the fourth quarter.

“Deploying two separate rearing centers for our parent lines is a key part of our strategy to build a reliable and scalable supply chain that can address the demand for spider silk and support year-round production,” said Kim Thompson, Founder and CEO of Kraig Labs. “This plan, which is the brainchild of our chief sericulture expert, Dr. Kumar, will provide the throughput necessary to support large-scale commercial production and a buffer against potential disruption.”

In parallel with these advancements in production operations, Kraig Labs announced it has completed the latest batch of BAM-1 finished spider silk. With this newest batch of finished silk complete, the company has now accumulated approximately one-third of the total spider silk required to fulfill a material request from a globally renowned European fashion house.

“This latest batch brings us another step closer to delivering premium spider silk materials to one of the most recognized names in fashion. The shift to a diapausing hybrid system reflects our long-term vision to deliver the highest quality spider silk at commercial scale,” said Rice. “By making this investment in time, infrastructure, and production strategy, we are positioning ourselves to meet the demand we see forming.”

The AZL Engineering Team will analyse current technologies, develop new design concepts for hydrogen and CNG vessels, and benchmark the resulting configurations in terms of weight, cost, recyclability and production KPIs. The consortium of participating companies will get access to simulation results, concept layouts, and comparative evaluations based on a unified framework.

Experience and Exchange Built In
The JPP format provides a platform not only for technical development, but also for strategic networking. Each partner can contribute input, benefit from consolidated expertise, and gain early access to the results. With more than a decade of experience managing such initiatives, AZL ensures a structured and result-driven collaboration.
The project will start on July 16th, 2025. All participants are invited to engage in an interactive Kick-off Meeting to define key priorities and present their internal perspectives.

Reconomy: New strategy paper to support the transition to textile EPR

Reconomy, a leading international circular economy specialist, has published a new global strategy exploring the evolving global landscape of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for textiles, outlining how businesses can prepare for upcoming changes and detailing Reconomy’s strategic initiatives to support businesses across Europe and worldwide.

The textile industry is approaching a period of significant regulatory and operational transformation. Traditionally, one of the most resource-intensive sectors, textiles generate substantial waste and emissions throughout their lifecycle. 

New EPR legislation is driving a fundamental shift by making producers responsible for end-of-life management, including collection, reuse, recycling, and disposal. This structural change is intended to accelerate the transition towards circular business models and more sustainable production and consumption patterns.

Reconomy, a leading international circular economy specialist, has published a new global strategy exploring the evolving global landscape of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for textiles, outlining how businesses can prepare for upcoming changes and detailing Reconomy’s strategic initiatives to support businesses across Europe and worldwide.

New EPR legislation is driving a fundamental shift by making producers responsible for end-of-life management, including collection, reuse, recycling, and disposal. This structural change is intended to accelerate the transition towards circular business models and more sustainable production and consumption patterns.

Reconomy views this regulatory shift not as a compliance burden, but as a critical opportunity for innovation and competitive differentiation. By supporting stakeholders in turning regulatory requirements into strategic advantages, Reconomy aims to help businesses build more resilient and circular operations while meeting increasing expectations from consumers, retailers, and policymakers.

The new strategy paper, Textile EPR Strategy 2030, sets out a comprehensive five-year roadmap, providing an overview of anticipated policy timelines and evolving requirements. It also addresses key themes including eco-modulation, Digital Product Passports, and the growing need for robust data and supply chain transparency.

The document outlines Reconomy’s mission and specific initiatives over the next five years that will enable clients to navigate the complex textile EPR landscape effectively.

In the short term, during the “pre-EPR” phase, this includes helping clients understand the regulatory impact, preparing them operationally, building strong partnerships across the textile ecosystem — including with sorters, recyclers, and other key stakeholders — and investing in technology to enable advanced data management and material returns. 

In the longer term, once EPR legislation is established across all EU member states and additional global markets, Reconomy will continue to support clients with multi-jurisdictional compliance (including in regions such as North America), help them leverage product-level data insights to drive innovation and better product design, and accelerate their transition to circular business models.

The strategy follows the launch of Reconomy's Textile EPR Impact Assessment service – a new tailored service designed to help businesses prepare for the rapidly evolving landscape of textile regulations.

Archroma, a global leader in specialty chemicals, launched CYCLANON® XC-W e, an innovative washing-off auxiliary that improves productivity and reduces resource consumption in cellulosic dyeing while delivering outstanding color fastness, even in difficult high-electrolyte or hard water conditions.

Conventional polyacrylate or copolymer washing-off agents often struggle to fully remove unfixed dye from fabric, especially when a high concentration of salt remains on it from the dye bath or under hard water conditions. Archroma, a global leader in specialty chemicals, launched CYCLANON® XC-W e, an innovative washing-off auxiliary that improves productivity and reduces resource consumption in cellulosic dyeing while delivering outstanding color fastness, even in difficult high-electrolyte or hard water conditions.

Conventional polyacrylate or copolymer washing-off agents often struggle to fully remove unfixed dye from fabric, especially when a high concentration of salt remains on it from the dye bath or under hard water conditions. This can lead to excessive rinsing and multiple washing baths. Ineffective washing-off may result in quality rejections due to backstaining or uneven shade development.

PureCycle and Emerald Carpets drive Circularity in Trade Show Industry

This collaboration aims to transform the trade show carpet industry by creating closed-loop circularity in carpet production.

As part of the partnership, Emerald Carpets signed an commercial supply agreement with PureCycle for approximately 5 million pounds annually of PureFive™ resin. PureFive Choice™ resin will be blended into Emerald Carpets' existing fiber production, enabling them to immediately exceed the current policy-mandated recycled content requirement in California. This should allow Emerald Carpets to meet California's carpet-to-carpet (closed loop) recycled content requirements that go into effect in 2028.

Throughout 2025-2026, Emerald Carpets and PureCycle plan to work together at their respective production facilities in Dalton, Georgia, and Ironton, Ohio, to develop, test and ultimately scale the process, anticipating the use of more than 5 million pounds annually, with the goal of delivering circular trade show carpets to the marketplace.

The partnership has experienced successful trials by Emerald Carpets using purposeformulated PureFive Choice™ resin, including Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) material. The trial demonstrated the potential of high-performance carpets made with PCR rPP content to meet the demands of trade show environments. Traditionally, sourcing drop-in PCR rPP for carpet production has been a challenge due to the complex nature of carpet fiber manufacturing and the limitations of mechanically recycled rPP material.

Currently, polypropylene represents a significant part of carpet fibers, as alternatives have been scarce. PureCycle's innovative, dissolution recycling technology enables carpet manufacturers to reduce their reliance on virgin materials in the production of high-quality carpets, paving the way for a more sustainable carpet and events industry.

Ein Abend voller Emotionen, spannender Momente und beeindruckender Designs, der im ikonischen Aalto-Theater – entworfen vom finnischen Architekten Alvar Aalto – startete und mit der Designers’ Night rund ums Red Dot Design Museum auf dem UNESCO-Welterbe Zollverein endete. BRP wird Designteam des Jahres
Mit großem Applaus wurde das BRP Design & Innovation Team als „Red Dot: Design Team of the Year 2025“ gekrönt – ein Ehrentitel, der seit 1988 ausschließlich an herausragende Gestaltungsteams der internationalen Designszene vergeben wird. In den vergangenen Jahren erhielten unter anderem Apple, Ferrari, Grohe und zuletzt Thule diese besondere Anerkennung. Der Wanderpokal „Radius“, der den Namen jedes einzelnen ausgezeichneten Designteams trägt, wurde feierlich von Henrik Eriksson, Global Design Director bei Thule, an Denys Lapointe, Chief Design Officer bei BRP, überreicht.

Zur Designers‘ Night feierten drei neue Ausstellungen im Red Dot Design Museum Premiere: „Red Dot Milestones 2025–2026“ zeigt bis zum 31. Mai 2026 die 89 besten Produkte des Jahres aus allen Wettbewerbskategorien. „Design on Stage 2025–2026“ präsentiert auf fünf Museumsetagen rund 1.500 ausgezeichnete Produkte und ist ebenfalls bis zum 31. Mai 2026 zu sehen. Erstmals lädt außerdem die neue One-Minute-Design-Challenge dazu ein, den Blick zu schärfen: In der zweiten Etage fordert ein inszeniertes Kinderfahrrad von Woom die Besucherinnen und Besucher auf, sich eine Minute lang ganz auf dessen Gestaltung zu konzentrieren – die Auflösung mit überraschenden Details folgt direkt auf der Rückseite der Präsentationswand. Zudem gewährt „Adventure by Design – BRP Design & Innovation Team“ bis zum 9. September 2025 tiefe Einblicke in die kreative Welt des aktuellen Red Dot: Design Team of the Year.

SOURCE FASHION launches scheme to support British manufacturers

Source Fashion announces £500,000 investment in a scheme to support British Heritage manufacturers. On Day 2 of Source Fashion the show has unveiled a major new initiative designed to champion British manufacturing. The new scheme will provide each of 15 selected UK-based heritage manufacturers with a fully funded stand, marketing support, and brand development assistance, representing over £500,000 worth of support to run across the next three years.

Beginning February 2026, Source Fashion will form a dedicated British Heritage Pavilion to showcase the 15 curated, high-quality, heritage manufacturers, from across the UK. The selected businesses will receive support for three consecutive editions of the show, a move designed to help them build long-term visibility and growth.

The programme will be open to a diverse range of UK manufacturers, from heritage textiles in Scotland to component specialists in the Midlands and South. It aims to address a long-standing lack of support for British producers who often struggle to afford the costs of exhibiting, especially when compared to government-subsidised competitors abroad.
Each business will receive:

  • A free stand at three consecutive Source Fashion shows in January 2026, July 2026 and January 2027.
  • Dedicated bespoke PR and marketing campaigns
  • Exposure through Source Fashion’s global content channels

To ensure the most deserving and high-potential manufacturers are selected, Source Fashion will work with their advisory board to identify manufacturers and makers that would benefit from the show.  

The first full cohort of heritage manufacturers will be announced in September 2025. While most participants are still under wraps, organisers have confirmed outreach has already begun, and standout British businesses have already been selected to join the inaugural pavilion include Courtnery and Co, The last remaining button manufacturer in the UK, and Alexander Manufacturing. These companies represent the exceptional craftsmanship and highlight how special British manufacturing and heritage can be. The scheme aims to spotlight, with more names to be revealed in the coming months.

Driving innovation in sustainable textile finishing and beyond

Ahead of this year’s ITMA Asia + CITME exhibition in Singapore from October 28-31, industry leading companies Archroma, BW Converting and Monforts will take part in a webtalk with German association VDMA on September 18th.

The three companies will share insights from recent trials conducted at the Monforts Advanced Technology Center in Germany, where a Baldwin TexCoat™ G4 spray unit has been integrated into a Montex stenter to apply Archroma’s latest waterborne chemicals. The collaborative effort aims to maximise resource efficiency and throughput in textile finishing. In addition, the partners will unveil details of a new, cutting-edge line concept set to debut at ITMA Asia in Singapore.

Installed in 2024 at the Monforts Advanced Technology Center in Mönchengladbach, the full-width Baldwin TexCoat G4 unit has enabled extensive real-world testing of advanced finishing formulations. The system’s integration into the Montex stenter has provided a valuable platform for evaluating performance, precision, and sustainability across a wide range of application scenarios.

“This work now enables us to guide manufacturers through the transition from standard impregnation processes to spray application systems, which have the potential to reduce water and energy consumption as less water is needed to transport the chemicals to the textile surface,” explains Michael Schuhmann, Global Marketing Segment Manager for Technical Textiles at Archroma Textile Effects. “Our latest addition to this range of options is a patent-pending, highly wash durable hydrophilic softener which enhances the longevity of the treated fabrics and will be commercially available soon.”

Commercial success
BW Converting is already seeing commercial success with the Baldwin TexCoat G4 system in the field. In Pakistan, for example, its integration into Montex stenters using Archroma chemistry has proven to be a highly effective line concept for bed sheet production.

“We have helped our customers double their stenter output, while also significantly enhancing the hand feel of the finished fabrics,” says Rick Stanford, Vice President of Business Development for Textiles at BW Converting.

Independent testing by Fashion for Good, a global platform for sustainable textile innovation, compared TexCoat G4 spray application with traditional pad-based finishing, using a Monforts stenter and Archroma formulations. The results confirmed that combining advanced equipment design, process expertise, and tailored chemistry can significantly reduce energy and water consumption while improving capacity utilisation for textile mills.

Monforts has long focused on developing optimised processes paired with energy-efficient machine layouts. Building on the success of their recent collaboration, the three partners are now working on a similar resource-saving concept, combining Monforts’ Thermex continuous dyeing range with the new Baldwin TexChroma spray dyeing system and Archroma dyestuffs.

“We are committed to continuing to work together with a focus on bringing transformative change to the dyeing and finishing space,” says Monforts Technologist Saskia Kuhlen.

Likewise new to the programme is the Handelsverband Hessen’s expert session ‘Security in retail: shoplifting, rights, prevention’. In this Q&A session, Manuel Hable (Head of Security & Fraud Prevention at JC New Retail AG, the holding company for the Peek & Cloppenburg Group), Ina Kasperski (police superintendent at the State of Hessen Office of Criminal Investigation) and Stefan Siegel (Managing Director of security firm Rentario Sicherheitsmanagement GmbH) will be providing practical suggestions for dealing with a problem affecting physical retail stores ever more frequently. 
 
Foresight, progress and world events 
The keynote speech ‘On the state of sustainable fashion: what is important now’ explores why, despite climate change, the focus on sustainability is reducing while fast fashion flourishes. Speaker Nina Lorenzen of Fashion Changers presents the background and the opportunities that arise, even – in fact especially – for smaller businesses. 

“We all share the vision of a fair and sustainable world, but without a strategic view of sales, profitability and readiness to continue developing, businesses no longer get very far,” says Alexander Hitzel, INNATEX Project Manager. “That may seem obvious but it’s not at all easy in practice. In 2025, Dots evolves from a single product into a comprehensive work program. This expansion allows for unparalleled customization through the combination of 10 weft colors and 10 warp colors, ensuring that every project’s unique requirements can be met. Hand-woven from a blend of wool and tencel, Dots creates a soft, continuous surface, finely crafted with twisted wool elements. The distinctive dotted pattern in various color shades is achieved through a specialized dyeing and twisting technique applied to the wool.

‘La lune sous le chapeau’ is an ‘objet trouvé’ in its essence, re-evaluating simple materials, low technology, and formal simplicity. The lampshade was conceived by Man Ray in 1974 on a flat sheet of cardboard, and quickly, along with sketches for the base, evolved into the iconic lamp we know today. This piece, seemingly anonymous and anti-design, is provocatively poetic, featuring the most minimal of lampshades supported by the most elementary of bases. This re-edition faithfully reproduces the original design, not just in form but also in spirit.

The N-Join1 employs a unique process that joins the carpet surface together with the substrate in a single step. The substrate can be made from various materials including Autoneum’s Pure technology components made of 100 percent polyester, making N-Join1 easier to recycle without limiting customers’ design freedom.

Additionally, its monomaterial construction enables waste-free production and full recycling at the vehicle’s end-of-life. By eliminating the use of latex, which is water and energy-intensive, N-Join1 reduces resource usage and ensures cleaner production, supporting the automotive industry’s move towards more sustainable practices. 

Overall, the new carpet system achieves a significant reduction in the carbon footprint when com-pared to traditional carpet systems of equal weight. The greatest contribution comes from the end-of-life recycling potential enabled by the monomaterial system. 

N-Join1 is suitable for a wide range of vehicles, including both internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and battery electric vehicles (BEVs). It is currently available in Europe and North America.
