In this regard, Autoneum's new impact protection plate offers a high-performance, safe and cost-effective option thanks to its mechanical and thermal insulation properties, low weight and ability to withstand extreme temperatures.

Autoneum’s composite impact protection plate shields the vehicle battery from damage caused by impact, fire and corrosion. It is significantly lighter than metal alternatives and at the same time ther-mally insulating, which contributes to a longer driving range. In addition, the part meets the highest requirements for impact resistance and springs back into shape without structural loss or deforma-tion even after repeated exposure to stones and road debris. The new impact protection plate is based on long-fiber thermoplastic (LFT) technology, which allows the greatest possible freedom in terms of design and construction as well as waste-free production. Moreover, the additional rein-forcement of the basic structure ensures maximum rigidity and impact protection at minimal weight.

The impact protection plate reflects Autoneum’s technological expertise in underbody shields, ther-mal management and the application of the LFT process, adapted specifically for battery electric vehicles. The technology for the composite impact protection plate has been validated by simulations and vehicle testing at different European OEMs.

E-Fiber flame shields: Mica-free flame protection for electric vehicles

The number of lithium-ion battery electric vehicles (BEV) in use worldwide is growing rapidly. As a result, ensuring the safety of the battery pack and thus minimizing the risk of fire accidents has become a key issue for car manufacturers across the globe. In order to protect vehicle occupants in the event of a so-called thermal runaway, in which the battery heats up quickly and uncontrollably and, in the worst case, ignites or explodes, fire protection materials and components such as flame shields are among the most effective methods.

Autoneum’s new E-Fiber flame shields offer flame protection and electrical insulation inside the battery housing. They can withstand extreme temperatures, pressure and abrasions, thus significantly increasing the safety of passengers in the event of the battery overheating and catching fire. As the shields are made from a composite material, they are also considerably lighter, mechanically stronger and more cost-efficient than the mineral mica alternatives on the market.

As the shields are made from a composite material, they are also considerably lighter, mechanically stronger and more cost-efficient than the mineral mica alternatives on the market.

In contrast to alternative standard products, which often consist of heavy and brittle mineral materials such as mica, the innovative shields based on E-Fiber are lightweight, stiff and stable and offer optimum flame protection and fire blast resistance. Due to the moldability of the material, the shields also ensure excellent battery coverage and design flexibility. Thanks to the possibility of manufacturing components with complex 3D shapes, there is also the potential to integrate an additional function to guide hot gases away from the battery. The shields are based on a composite material made of reinforcing fibers and resin, which are formed into thin layers of one to two millimeters.

The heat resistance of up to 1400°C and the mechanical strength of the material significantly increase the shields’ resistance to high temperatures, but also hot particle abrasion and gas pressure. Moreover, the fibers provide the part’s non-conductive and insulating properties, which are necessary for the battery system’s electrical insulation and thermal safety.

The E-Fiber flame shields can be installed between the battery cells and the battery cover or the vehicle floor and contribute significantly to increasing the safety of vehicle occupants in the event of a battery thermal runaway. They thus offer a lightweight, safe and geometrically adaptable alternative to standard flame shields on the market. In addition, the composite shields are completely riskfree from a compliance perspective. This is in contrast to mica-based products, which can prove problematic in terms of responsible sourcing.

Autoneum’s E-Fiber flame shields have already been validated in battery tests and are currently in pre-development with various customers in Europe.

Against the backdrop of the rapidly advancing electrification of mobility and Autoneum’s strategic focus on further expanding its presence in the Asian growth markets, the expansion activities of the company-wide innovation network this year concentrated on two key areas in particular: New Mobility and presence in China.

Responding to the increasing demand for new components for electric vehicles, Autoneum has formed a specialized team dedicated exclusively to New Mobility to further strengthen its position in this growing market segment. The New Mobility team was established in fall 2023 and has been completed over the past twelve months with members from different departments. It unites a broad set of skills from various fields of expertise such as product innovation, product development and industrialization, sales and business development. The team places a particular focus on accelerating the development and time to market of new products and technologies specifically for the fast-evolving battery systems and architectures of electric vehicles. It also acts as a catalyst for innovation pro-jects and strategic partnerships. The New Mobility experts work in close collaboration with the various departments across the organization and are based at Autoneum’s Swiss headquarters in Win-terthur, at the German locations in Gundernhausen and Munich and in Shanghai, China.

Shanghai is also the location of Autoneum’s third R&T Center worldwide, which was opened in China this summer to enhance the Company’s competitiveness in Asia and cater to the development and innovation needs in this key strategic market. The new center aims to intensify and accelerate the development and production of innovative components and materials, especially regarding e-mobility. The establishment of an R&T team in China allows Autoneum to develop products in a timely manner to respond to the dynamic market conditions and the rapidly evolving requirements of Chinese vehicle manufactures. In terms of material development, the center will support the wider organization in the further development of sustainable materials, especially polyester. In addition, it will promote the introduction of Autoneum’s environmentally friendly products such as the Company’s monomaterial carpet systems featuring Autoneum’s innovative and latex-free alternative backcoating (ABC) process to the Chinese market. Moreover, the R&T Center in Shanghai will also serve as a valuable point of contact with the 14 production facilities of the Jiangsu Huanyu Group, whose acquisition of a majority stake of 70 percent by Autoneum was recently announced and is expected to be closed in March 2025 (see media release of November 19, 2024). While the plants in China will benefit from the local R&T team’s expertise in the company’s technologies, the existing broad customer base of Jiangsu Huanyu Group will support Autoneum in better understanding and serving the innovation needs of Chinese vehicle manufacturers.

The new R&T Center in Shanghai complements the primary R&T Center in Winterthur, Switzerland, which supports the global network with its expertise and a vast array of services in the areas of pre-development as well as acoustic and thermal benchmarking, simulation and testing, and the center in Bocholt, Germany. The latter was integrated into Autoneum’s innovation network following the acquisition of Borgers Automotive last year and has since established itself as the Company’s competence center for trunk and trim components. Including the new center in China, a total of approximately eighty R&T employees – including engineers, chemists, physicists and product designers – are continuously working on new ideas aimed at the next technological breakthrough in acoustic and thermal management and shielding technologies.

Synergies in the areas of technology and purchasing will also contribute to the further development of Business Group Asia. In the 2023 financial year, Jiangsu Huanyu Group generated revenue of around CHF 130 million and is recording strong growth in 2024. It is planned to continue operating the company under the Chinese company name.

The acquisition of Jiangsu Huanyu Group will be done in two phases. The closing of phase 1, the takeover of a majority stake of 70 percent at a purchase price of around CHF 75 million (excluding cash and cash equivalents and debt), is expected in March 2025 after approval by the authorities. As for the acquisition of the remaining 30 percent of the share capital, phase 2, Autoneum has a call option, which can be exercised in 2028. This two-phase approach binds both the current shareholders and the employees in key positions and allows Autoneum, together with Jiangsu Huanyu Group, to continue and further develop existing business activities smoothly.

“Jiangsu Huanyu Group has broad customer access to the largest local vehicle manufacturers in China. With its plants in the key automotive hubs in China, the company is an excellent strategic addition to Autoneum and brings us a significant step closer to our medium-term target of generating 20 percent of Group revenue in Asia,” explains Eelco Spoelder, Chief Executive Officer of Autoneum. “The acquisition of the majority stake in Jiangsu Huanyu Group will strengthen our position in China, the world’s largest and fastest-growing market, both in the light and commercial vehicle business. This step not only gives us access to an established customer base in China, but also allows us to further expand our presence and gain strong influence in the booming automotive hubs of Anhui and Shaanxi.”

Autoneum: Opening of third plant in India

In the presence of CEO Eelco Spoelder, Autoneum opened its new production facility in Pune in Western India on August 28, 2024. The opening of the third plant in the key automotive market of India is in line with the Company’s strategic focus on future profitable growth with a particular emphasis on Asian growth markets. Series production of carpet systems, interior trim, wheelhouse outer liners, e-motor encapsulations and other noise protection components for local and international vehicle manufacturers has already begun.

The plant in Pune in the western Indian state of Maharashtra is wholly owned by Autoneum and complements the existing production facility in Behror near New Dehli in the north and the joint venture plant in Chennai in the south of India. During the inauguration ceremony in Pune, Autoneum CEO Eelco Spoelder said: “With the opening of our new plant, Autoneum gains access to the third of the four major automobile production centers in India. By expanding our presence in this strategically important region, we can further strengthen our position in Asia, the world’s largest automotive market.”

The building spans an area of 7 500 square meters and includes modern production equipment. The Pune plant will supply both local and international customers with noise-reducing lightweight components for the interior and exterior of vehicles of all drive types. Pune will be the first Autoneum plant in India with the capability to produce Hybrid-Acoustics PET felts for e-motor encapsulation. Components made of Hybrid-Acoustics PET are characterized by their lightweight construction and noise protection that are optimized for electric vehicles. They consist entirely of PET, which is largely obtained from recycled fibers, and thus meet customer demand for environmentally friendly mobility solutions.

As announced in March, Pune is one of two plants that Autoneum is opening this year in the important Asian growth markets of China and India. The new joint venture plant in Changchun in the northern Chinese province of Jilin will ramp up production of inner dashes, interior floor insulators and other NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) components for European, Japanese and Chinese car manufacturers from the end of 2024. Both new plants in Pune and Changchun are strategically located thanks to their proximity to important customers. In India, Autoneum supplies European, American, Indian, Japanese and Korean vehicle manufacturers.

Autoneum: Half-Year Results 2024

Autoneum significantly increased its revenue consolidated in Swiss francs by CHF 109.8 million to CHF 1 212.3 million compared to the prior-year period, supported by inorganic growth. In a slightly declining market, the Company succeeded in increasing its EBIT margin excluding special effects by 1.3 percentage points to 5.4%. A solid net result of CHF 36.1 million was generated in the first half-year of 2024. Due to the positive margin development, the Company now expects an EBIT margin of 5.0% to 5.5% for the current financial year (previously 4.5% to 5.5%).

In the first half of 2024, automotive industry production volumes were somewhat restrained world-wide and even declined slightly in Europe. While economic conditions in the automotive supply industry have improved to a certain extent since the coronavirus crisis, high vehicle prices in some markets were putting a damper on demand. Only North America and Asia recorded slight growth compared to the same period of the previous year.

Only North America and Asia recorded slight growth compared to the same period of the previous year.

Despite the flat market development, Autoneum managed to significantly increase both revenue and profitability before special effects over the prior-year period. This positive development was achieved through the automotive business of traditional German company Borgers, which had been acquired as of April 1, 2023, and thus contributed for the first time to the entire reporting period. At the same time, Autoneum achieved operational improvements worldwide.

Outlook
The current S&P market forecasts assume that global automobile production will decline by 2.0%* in 2024 compared with 2023. Based on the forecast market development and further operational improvements, Autoneum continues to expect total revenue in 2024 of CHF 2.3 billion to 2.5 billion and free cash flow in the high upper double-digit million range. Due to the positive margin develop-ment, the company now expects an EBIT margin of 5.0% to 5.5% (previously 4.5% to 5.5%).

Autoneum is expanding its production capacities in the key automotive hubs of China and India to increase its presence and thus its proximity to customers in these important production centers.

Autoneum’s new plant in China, which will be operated as a joint venture, will be located in Changchun in the northern Chinese Jilin province, which is one of Asia’s largest car production centers. The proximity to key local and international vehicle manufacturers makes Changchun a strategically important and attractive location for Autoneum. The plant will help to increase market share with European, Japanese and Chinese car manufacturers with products for light vehicles and also support the expansion of the Company’s business with components for commercial vehicles in this region. The project is supported by the local authorities in China. From the end of 2024, the plant will ramp up production with first samples for already awarded business for inner dashes, interior floor insulators and other NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) components for cars of all drive types.

Autoneum is furthermore expanding its local presence in Western India with a fully owned production facility in Pune in the state of Maharashtra. The Company already operates two locations in India: one in Behror near New Delhi in the north and a joint venture plant in Chennai in the south. Thanks to the new Pune plant, Autoneum will now be present in the north, west and south of the country and gain access to the third of four major automobile production centers in India. Orders have already been received and the plant in Pune will start manufacturing carpet systems, interior trim, wheelhouse outer liners, e-motor covers and other noise protection components as of the second quarter of 2024. From the 7 500 square meter building, Autoneum will supply international as well as local car manufacturers with a particular focus on Indian and Korean vehicle manufacturers.

Economic conditions in the automotive supply industry improved in the first half of 2023 compared to the prior-year period. There was a slight easing of supply chains and a rise in production volumes among vehicle manufacturers already in the first quarter of 2023. This was especially true in markets that had previously been heavily impacted by supply chain bottlenecks.

Global automobile production climbed by 11.8%* compared with the prior-year period, although consumer demand was somewhat dampened by high vehicle prices in some markets. In this improved market environment and supported by the acquisition of the automotive business from Borgers, a long-standing German company, as of April 1, 2023, Autoneum increased its revenue and net result substantially in the first six months compared with the same period of the previous year.

  • Positive revenue development supported by inorganic growth
  • Significant improvement of operational profitability and solid net profit
  • Equity ratio influenced by the acquisition of Borgers Automotive
  • Creation of a capital band
  • Business Groups
  • Integration of Borgers automotive business
  • Working on behalf of electromobility with sustainable noise absorption in underbody

  • SBTi recognizes Autoneum’s science-based targets

Outlook unchanged
According to the current S&P market forecasts, it is expected that global automobile production will climb by 5.7%* in 2023 compared with 2022. Autoneum anticipates that production volumes in the various regions will develop in line with the forecasts. Customer negotiations are ongoing and Autoneum expects that the increase in costs for raw materials, energy, transportation and staff will be completely offset in the second half of the year. Based on the forecast market development and the renegotiated customer agreements, Autoneum confirms the outlook that it published in March 2023. The Company expects total revenue of CHF 2.4 to 2.5 billion at unchanged exchange rates for the financial year 2023, an EBIT margin of 3.5% to 4.5% excluding one-time effects and a free cash flow in the higher double-digit millions, excluding acquisition-related net cash outflows.
