Oeko-Tex Standard 100

Product Classes

When a textile is to be assigned to one of the four product classes under Oeko-Tex Standard 100, a distinction is made according to the particular purpose of the textile: the more intensive the skin contact, the stricter the requirements. Under the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 the rule is: babies need special protection! In Product Class I, therefore, on account of sensitive baby skin, all baby articles are subject to the strictest criteria. Components containing formaldehyde are banned. The requirement that products be saliva-resistant means that dyes and prints must not bleed or fade when babies chew on them.

Product Class I
Applies to products for babies and toddlers up to the age of 36 months (as of Jan. 2004).

Product Class II
Products in contact with the skin which, when properly used, have a large part of their surface area in direct contact with the skin.

Product Class III
Products not in contact with the skin which, when properly used, do not come into contact with the skin, or only for a small part of their surface area.

Product Class IV
For materials used for decorative purposes.
